Is it possible to do a multiple-records data merge that doesn't generate multiple text boxes? And if so, how?
For publications such as a directory with contact information, it would be easier to manage the layout by merging multiple records into one text box. However, it seems like the only option in InDesign is to merge the records into each of their own text boxes.

  • How can I do a multiple record data merge, but specify that a specific text frame with variable data only merges on the first record?

    I'm doing a multiple record data merge, I have 2 frames both with variable data placed inside.
    I would like to specify that one of the text frames only merges once(first record) and the other frame multiple times for each record in the data file.
    Is it possible?
    I thought that perhaps if I place the text frame that must merge once on the master page, it would work.  But you are not allowed to place variable text on the master and on the document page.
    I'm going to try it through scripting next, but thought that perhaps there is an easier way that I'm not aware of.

    If you were trying to post a screen shot, you would need to return to the forum and post it using the "camera" icon at the top of the post editing windows.
    I use a plug-in from Em Software called InData. One of the benefits for what I do is there are no individual frames on a page to deal with post-merge. Individual frames are great for simple merges (address labels, post cards, etc.). But I typically do more other types of merges.
    That said, there is a drawback--one needs to come to an understanding of writing expressions that actually parse the incoming data. So in the spice price list example, that looks like:
    It's reasonably easy once one does it a few times. And it can be far more complicated. The above is from Em Software's samples that has been tweaked. The best thing I can recommend would be to download the trial and see for yourself. They are good at responding to specific questions if you get stumped.
    I imagine this all could be scripted somehow in ID. But I have no idea how and the plug-in just lets me keep working.

  • Multiple record data merge into paragraph styles-applies the wrong style

    Hi, I've been working on this project for sometime and everytime I manage to get one part of the workflow to work another seems to break. My agency publishes catalogs in multiple formats: large-print, audio, braille, and HTML. I've been trying to redesing our work process so that the catalogs will be laid out from merged data out of comma-separated file. The data merges have worked fairly well in Word, but InDesign is a challenge. I'm merging multiple records on a page, like a mailing label. The paragraphs need to be formatted and I'm trying to apply a paragraph style to them. After much work, I think I've finally got the data merge to work correctly, but the wrong paragraph styles are applied. I'm going to apply a new master page to the data once the data is merge that uses the paragraph styles for text variable running headers and I need to build a table of contents based on the paragraph styles so I need this to work. Attached are some screenshots.

    I don't remember this happening in past versions. But I mainly use XML. And a quicky test converting your file to XML worked fine (and besides, it ends up all in continuous text frames...).
    I don't do much GREP. But you can do this via a Find/Replace.
    First, in your main document, you can delete the tags--but do this on a second copy of your working file!
    Change your Content Placement options to not remove blank lines (these are in the Datamerge panel).
    Then after the merge, change the format of the two blank lines at the beginning of the records without the two lines of data:
    Note the Change Format style is changing those two paragraphs to Title.
    Then rerun the find to remove the two blank paragraphs.
    I suspect this can be done easier. I am sitting awaiting an appointment and cannot go much further than this for now, sorry.

    I am trying to create a response card.
    The sizing is such that they lie three on a letter sized page, and fit into Number 9 envelopes.  I've
    data merged onto the one page (so three target/data boxes in each of the response cards) but when i select expo
    rt and multiple records it doesnt work right.  It generates three on a page of all the same
    record, and then a page of three for each record.  i need each record only once and i'd like to print them three to a page and then cut them.
    advice?  i am not very advanced with indesign, so specific steps would be much appreciated.
    is there a way to print if i make just one card?  it seems you can only do 2 or 4 to a page, not three

    You set your fields three times on the page right?, delete instances 2 & 3.
    Repeat - Set the first instance of all your design, eliminate everything else.
    From the Create Merged Document panel, select "Multiple Fields" in Records per Document and adjust spacing on the Multiple Record Layout tab. (Hint, turn on preview)

  • Multiple Records Data Merge issue

    Hi all, could really use some help here, I've been trying to solve this for hours now:
    Made 3 different designs for labels that I'm printing based off of Avery label templates for InDesign. When I go ahead to do my data merge on any of them, I select "Multiple Records" under Records per Document Page, but the preview and the actual creation just spit out a single unique label onto each new page. For example, I'm using 2x4" labels on 2 of these, so it should print 10 per page, but instead of putting 10 unique labels on a page, it puts each new label on a new page. Therefore, instead of 100 pages for the 1,000 labels I'm printing, I end up with 1,000 pages.
    I know to double check the size constraints on the text box and make sure it fits when duplicated, and to my understanding, that is looking like it's fine. I'm also fairly certain that the CSV files I'm using are in the right format, too. I'm pretty stuck at this point as to what I need to do to fix this problem, any guidance would be awesome. Below are screenshots of what I'm looking at, please let me know if there's anything else I can provide that would help diagnose the problem.

    I thinnk the easiest way to deal with this would be to make sure all the template information from Avery is on the master page. Leave it active while you do the layout in the upper left position ON THE DOCUMENT PAGE, then assign the None master to leave nothing showing but your placholders and added art.
    Reassign the template master after the merge.

    No, the camera connection kit only supports the copying of photos and videos to the Photos app, it doesn't support copying content off the iPad. For your second camera instead of the SD reader part of the kit, does the iPad to camera cable not work with it for direct transfer to the iPad ?
    For Lightroom and Nikon software again no - you can only install apps that are available in the iTunes app store on your computer and the App Store app on the iPad, 'normal' PC and Mac (OS X) software are not compatible with the iPad (iOS). There are some apps that perform fairly basic editing functions that are available in the store, but nothing as sophisticated as, for example, Lightroom.

  • CS3 hangs on multiple document data merge

    I am using data merge to create documents for high school graduation issues for two different high schools for the newspaper I work for.
    For each school, I have created a single document data merge to print proofs of the individual students. For the first and largest school,
    I've done a successful test run of a multiple document data merge of all the students. I then used the Excel .txt file from high school #1 to create the .txt file for high school #2. We have successfully done the individual data merges for proofs for each of the students in high school #2.
    However, when I try to run the multiple document data merge for high school #2, InDesign gives me the spinning wheel of death. Forever.
    I cand run or preview a single item, but it hangs up if I try to run them all or a range (even just 1-2).
    I am stumped as to why in what are basically the same documents one works and the other does not. Can anyone help?

    Brainstorming with a co-worker solved the problem. A graphic I was using was too large for InDesign to handle on the multiple document data merge. So I reducd the file size, and that did the trick.

  • Load multiple records in 1 table from 1 line in text file w/sql loader

    hi guys,
    quick question, perhaps someone can help. searched around and didn't see this question asked before, and can't find any answer in SQL Loader faqs or docs.
    i know i can extract multiple logical records from a single physical record in the input file as two logical records, and then use two into tables clauses to load the data into the table. see oracle 9i sql loader control file reference chapter 5 to see what i am talking about.
    but my question follows:
    cust_id amount1_val amount1_qual amount2_val amount2_qual amount3_val amount3_qual
    123 1500.35 TA 230.34 VZ 3045.50 TW
    basically i want to use one sql loader statement to load these 3 records into 1 table. the issue for me is that i need to re-use the cust_id for all 3 records as the key, along with the qualifier code. the example in the Oracle docs only works for data where the logical records are completely separate -- no shared column values.
    i'm sure this is possible, perhaps using some :cust_id type parameter for the 2nd and 3rd records, or something, but i just don't have enough knowledge/experience with sql loader to know what to do. appreciate any help.

  • Data merge CS5, will not create multiple records.

    I have my base elements on the master page and two text boxes on page 1 on of a single page document. I am creating raffle tickets so there is box on the left side of the page and the right side of the page. I need this step 3 times down the sheet.
    I've tried using a comma delimited and tab delimited file. These files have two columns with numbers 1-500 and each with a different heading. Ticket 1 and Ticket 2.
    When I turn on multiple records nothing step and repeats. It looks exactly the same as a single record. I make raffle tickets like these quite often but the template I've used for the last few years is 1 up, built to the size of the ticket, and everything works great. I end up with 500 pages, send through our impositioning software then print.
    In this case, my client wants to print the files themselves and have them stepped up 4 per sheet.
    Does anyone know what I might be doing wrong?

    It takes the 1-up PDF and allows it to be placed into InDesign as it it were prepared in an n-up imposition.
    It isn't a fix to the multiple record issue that the OP has, but rather a workaround.

  • Recording data at particular iterations and writing to text file

    Hi all,
    this is my first time posting on the NI boards. I'm running into a couple problems I can't seem to figure out how to fix.
    I'm collecting data using a LabJack U3-HV daq. I've taken one of the out-of-the-box streaming functions that comes with the LabJack and modified it for my purposes. I am attempting to simply save the recorded data to a text file in columns, one for each of my 4 analog strain gauge inputs, and one for time. For some reason when the 'write to measurement file.vi' executes it is puts everything in rows, and the data is unintelligible.
    The 2nd issue I am facing, which is not currently visible in my vi, is that I am running my test for 60,000 cycles, which generates a ton of data. I'm measuring creep/fatigue with my strain gages so I don't need data for every cycle, probably for the first 1000, then the 2k, 4k, 6k, 8k, 10k, 20k, etc. More of an exponential curve. I tried using some max/min functions and then matching the 'write to measurement file.vi' with a case structure that only permitted it to write for particular iterations, but can't seem to get it to work.

    Hey carfreak,
    I've attached a screenshot that shows three different ways of trying to keep track of incrementing data and/or time in a while loop. The top loop just shows a program that demonstrates how shift registers can be used to transfer data between loops. This code just writes the iteration value to the array using the Build Array function.
    The first loop counts iterations in an extremely round-about way... the second shows that really you can just build the array directly using the iteration count (the blue "i" in the while loop is just an iteration counter).
    The final loop shows how you can use a time stamp to actually keep track of the relative time when a loop executes.
    Please note that these three should not actually be implemented together in one VI. I just built them in one BD for simplicity's sake for the screenshot. As described above, the producer-consumer architecture should be used when running parallel loops.

  • Recorded an Assessment and it get stuck at text box entries

    Hello,
    I am using Captivate 3 and have been sucessful in recording assessments in the past.  I am currently recording a tutorial on how to add pictures to a word document, resize, crop and title and comment on the picture.  The tutorial has what I call a "show me" then a "try me".  The demonstration (show me) works great.  The assessment (try me) I am recording directoy after the demonstration includes text box entries and this is the first time one of my assessments included those and they seem to be my issue.  First "interesting" thing that happened was that the text entry boxes spaned over the width of my project so I had to shrink them down to the targeted area.  Once I have them in the correct area I  and I run the project, everything works beautifully until I get to the text entry boxes.  I am able to enter text...but that is it.  I can't move forward or click anywhere else.
    I am attaching screen shots...not sure it will help.
    First screenshot is the first text box entry. where the words Living room need to be typed. 
    Second screenshot is the next slide where I thought I should be able to move down and place an X next to Paint All.  BUT as you can see I shifted the text box a bit and there is no evidence of the words Living Room.
    Third screenshot is where I shifted the text entry box up slightly to see only the word living is available BUT it looks like it now wants me to click next to paint all..but at the same time waiting for the word room to populate.  (Gosh I hope this makes sense)
    The last screen shot is showing the full text entry of Living Room and now looks like it wants me to check next to Paint All  EXCEPT I can't get past the first screen shot.

    It is not very clear on your screenshots, but it seems to me that in the first screenshot the Text Entry Box is inactive right from the start (looked at the timeline). Same for second and fourth screenshot. Only the third one seems to have an active region for the TEB. An interactive object that is set to inactive, I believe you cannot have any interactivity. Could you check?
    The entry in a TEB has to be confirmed: either by a Submit button (is not there) or by a shortcut (default is Enter). What did you choose?
    You spoke about TEB spread over the entire project, that could mean that in the tab Options of the Properties of this TEB, the option 'Display for entire project' was activated in the Timing. It is here that you can change the timing, and the active/inactive time period.
    Perhaps this was the explanation you needed?

  • Displaying Single Datablock field in Multiple Record Data Block

    Hi all
    I have a master detail block for cash transaction recording.
    Master Table name CahMaster and datablock contains columns Cash Bill No, Date, Customer ID, Misc Freight Charges.
    Detail Table name is CashDetail and datablock includes product id, product name, unit price, quantity, return, discount and Disc Overall. Number of records to be displayed in this block are 10.
    Now I want to Display Disc Overall field for one time only which is also a database field.
    I have used to set its properties to be displayed for one time only. It apprantlelly solved the problem.
    But when I used to execute query to see the previous records,
    Disc Overall field does not show the records till I move or Mouse click the last record of any cashdetail record.
    Any solution, thanks in advance!!!

    The layout of my cash detail is as follow to give you better undrstanding
    Prod_ID Prod_Name Qty Unit Price Return Disc Total per Record
    Total Qty --- Total Return ---- Sub Total ----
    Disc Overall ----- Grand Total ----
    I calculate cash Detail as following
    Total per Record = ((Qty - Return) X Unit Price) - Disc (Discount)
    Disc (Discount) is further calculated through When Validate trigger at item level which is (totalPrice * Disc)/100
    Total Per Record is a display field just to display the total.
    There are 4 other Displays fields e.g Total Qty, Total Return, Sub Total and Grand Total
    Totoal Qty, Total Return and Sub Total uses the sum fuction of block to calculate the sum of these three columns. Sub Total sum the Total Per Record field /column.
    Grand total again uses the when validate trigger at item level to calculate the grand total which is Grand Total = Sub Total - Disc Overall.
    Disc Overall = Subtotal - (subtotal * Disc Overall ) / 100
    That' s why I have asked to display the Discont Overall field for ONE TIME only as it is the discount which is applied to overall total.

  • How to get or show multiple record data pagewise using JSPBean and HTML

    I am using JSP bean for getting the data from database and html toe present the data.
    The problem is when the user inputs data
    in the search field and clicks on Search button ,i need to get all matching rows fromw the database ,which i am already getting.
    Now if i have got suppose 100 rows i need to show 6 recrods on each page the rest should be shown when the user clicks NEXT or PREV buttons.

    SEARCH Button
    Show here the first 6 records
    PREV 1 2 3 4 5..... NEXT
    The page will look somewhat like this.
    So the rows will be shown just below the search fields .If i am getting more than 6 record i should show PREV and NEXT with the number for each page holding 6 records.
    Have anybody worked on such thing can you help me out .
