Is it possible to install Final Cut Pro on a External TB Hard Drive

I would like to buy an external TB drive for my iMac and was wondering if it is possible to just run Final Cut Studio and all of it's apps off of a TB drive?

No. The Final Cut Studio applications must be on the same volume as Mac OS X.
You can put the accompanying content, such as motion templates etc on another drive.

Hi, is it possible to install Final Cut Pro 5.0.1 on a macbook running Version 10.6.8? I know it works on Macbook 10.5.8. Please help. Any information or advise will be appreciated. Thanks

    Thank you Shane Ross.
I needed that affirmation to move on to Plan B. I have also tried installing Final Cut Express on Macbook 10.6.8 and it just didn't accept it. And yes it is an intel.
    Cheers and thanks again.

  • Installing Final Cut Pro 1.2.5 on OS X

A buddy of mine was digging through some of his old software and found an unopened version of Final Cut Pro 1.2.5. I'm attempting to install in on my PowerBook G4, and I'm wondering if it is even possible.
I have installed and began running "classic" on my machine and have installed FCP, but when I try to start the program the following error message shows up: "That application or control panel is not supported by Classic"
I have no idea what this means, and all i'm trying to do is to install FCP v 1.2.5 so I can upgrade to version 3.0.2. I know the software is a little behind the times, but I can not turn down free software.

Open the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences and check if there is a Mac OS 9 entry in the list of disks; if so, click on it and then on the Restart button. From here, install Final Cut Pro 1.25 and then upgrade to 3.02; additional information on upgrading is available in this article.
If you cannot boot your computer from Mac OS 9, you cannot install Final Cut Pro 3.02 through the upgrade package; you need a full installation disk.

I have a Macbook Model No A1181 2.4 GHz intel core 2 Duo with 4 Gb Ram. Should I be able to instal Final Cut Pro 3.0.2 cos I'm having problems? As I read it My machine should be able to run the software.
    Thanks in advance

You are trying to use software that is over 10 years old. As I read it, FCP 3.0.2 required 10.1 or higher at the time, but as FCP is reliant on quicktime, which has been updated many, many times, I doubt that you will ever get it to work properly.

  • I am trying to install Final cut pro studio V1.0.1 (2005) on OS X lion. I get a message "You can't open the application final cut studio.mpkg because power pc application are no longer supported

I am trying to install Final cut pro 5 studio V1.0.1 (2005) on OS X lion. I get a message "You can't open the application final cut studio.mpkg because power pc application are no longer supported. My computer is New. Is their a link I can go to get tech support?

You won't find any help at tech support ... other than telling you the facts: Intel processor Macs require FCP 5.1 or higher.  FCP 5.0 and earlier were written for PowerPC processor Macs, long before Apple switched to using Intel processors.
And then there's the issue of the OS.  OS 7 will allow FCP 7 (and sometimes even FCP 6) to work OK, but versions earlier than that have spotty operation on Lion.
Here's a brief history of full FCP versions and recommended OS compatibility:
    * = requires PPC             ** = works with both PPC and Intel                          *** = require Intel
    FCP 1.0*       OS 9
    FCP 2.0*       OS 9
    FCP 3.0*       OS 9, OS 10.1, OS 10.2
    FCP 4.0*       OS 10.2, 10.3
    FCP 4.5*       OS 10.3
    FCP 5.0*       OS 10.3 (OS 10.4?)
    FCP 5.1**     OS 10.4, 10.5
    FCP 6.0**     OS 10.4, 10.5, 10.6 (OS 10.7?)
    FCP 7.0***    OS 10.6, OS 10.7
    FCP-X***       OS 10.6, OS 10.7
Essentially, you have a newer Intel processor Mac with a new OS and very old, incompatible software.   You might be able to find a used version of Final Cut Studio 3 on sites like ebay or craigslist as it is no longer offered by Apple as an upgrade.
Alternatively, you could purchase and download FCP-X, but it is an entirely different application, sharing virtually nothing with previous versions of FCP.

  • Is it possible to export Final Cut Pro X or .MOV to DVD Studio Pro (Final Cut Studio)?

Is it possible to export Final Cut Pro X projects or .MOV to DVD Studio Pro (from Final Cut Studio v.3)? I'm using the free trial of Final Cut Pro X and later acquired a copy of Final Cut Studio (FCP 7, Compressor 3.5, DVD Studio Pro 4, Color 1.5, Motion 4, Soundtrack Pro 2).
I don't like the default DVD export in FCPX, so I would like to do it on DVD Studio Pro. Is it possible to export the project or the final .MOV file to DVD Studio Pro?
Additionally, can I use unfinished FCPX projects on FCP7?
Is it possible to export from FCPX to Compressor 3.5 (Final Cut Studio)?
Feedback would be greatly appreciated. As of this post, I have about 13 days left on my FCPX trial. Or would it just make sense to just use Final Cut Pro 7, since I have a permanent copy of it?
    Thank you.
P.S. Where would be the best place to store projects or any other file related to Final Cut Studio or Final Cut Pro X? My MacBook Pro has 320GB built in storage (only 60GB available), and I have a 1TB external hard drive.
What is best to store on the Macintosh internal hard drive?
What is best to store on the external hard drive?

Yes you can make DVDs in DVDSP using video exported from FCPX.
There are some apps that will translate between X and 7- that said I would highly recommend not going back and forth as the translations are not 1:1 perfect.
I would recommend storing all Events and Projects on the External drive.
Compressor 3.5 will not accept exports directly from FCPX- you'll need Compressor 4 which is $49.
Totally up to you whether you want to make the jump to X. 7 is an EOL'ed program, meaning there will not be another version of that application. Final Cut Pro X is the version being actively developed now.

  • I CAN'T INSTALL FINAL CUT PRO 3 ON MY NEW INTEL IMAC, HELP!!!

I'm trying to install FINAL CUT PRO 3 onto my new iMac but can't. It reads the disk but then says, "Original disk needed for install." I have the original disk, I own a registered copy of the program, so I'm stuck.

    Hi -
I believe Final Cut 5 is designed to run on a Power PC CPU machine, the current MacBooks use Intel chips - so the software will not install on your Intel based MacBook.
You can, however, upgrade from a full version of Final Cut 5 to Final Cut Studio 3 which contains the latest version of FCP, version 7 as well as Compressor, Color, Soundtrack Pro and Motion for $299 which is a steal as the full version for Final Cut Studio 3 is $999.
You only need the serial number of the full version (non-academic or non-upgrade version) to do the FCS 3 upgrade - you don't need to have FCP 5 loaded on your machine to make the upgrade work.
    Hope this helps.

I am trying to install final cut pro 6 onto my mac but a message keeps coming up saying its doesnt support a powerpc, anyone have any tips please?

If you have an Intel Mac and have recently upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion; here is a post I made in another similar thread:
I do not have any experience with Final Cut, but if you have existing projects that you MUST access; then you are in need of a solution on your new iMac in Mountain Lion!
Unfortunately you got caught up in the minor miracle of Rosetta.  Originally licensed by Apple when it migrated from the PowerPC CPU platform that it had used from the mid-1990's until the Intel CPU platform in 2006, Rosetta allowed Mac users to continue to use their library of PPC software transparently in emulation.
However, Apple's license to continue to use this technology expired with new releases of OS X commencing with Lion (and now Mountain Lion).  While educational efforts have been made over the last 6 years, the fact is that Rosetta was SO successful that many users were caught unaware UNTIL they upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion.
    Workarounds:
    1. If your Mac will support it, restore OS X Snow Leopard;
    2.  If your Mac will support it, partition your hard drive or add an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard into it and use the "dual-boot" method to choose between Final Cut Pro or Lion/Mt. Lion;
    3.  Purchase a used Mac that will run Snow Leopard (with the optional Rosetta installed) and continue to run FCE on that Mac (you can actually use Screen Sharing with a "headless" used Snow Leopard Mac Mini and use the screen from your other Mac to view and work FCP in the Mac Mini environment);
    2.  Upgrade to an Intel compatible version of FCP (such as FCP X) and hope it converts your existing projects to its newer format correctly.  There is much debate that the newer version of Final Cut are eliminating many needed features; for example Final Cut Pro X vs. Final Cut Pro 6 -- many users are staying with version 6;
    3.  Install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels and then install FCE in the Snow Leopard environment:
Full Snow Leopard installation instructions here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1365439
NOTE: STEP ONE of the instructions must currently be completed on a Snow Leopard or Lion Mac and the resulting modified Snow Leopard.cdr install file can then be moved over to your Mountain Lion Mac for completion of the remaining steps.
NOTE 2:  Computer games with complex, 3D or fast motion graphics make not work well or at all in virtualization.

  • Just Opened My New Mac Pro and trying to install Final Cut Pro

Just opened up my new Mac. I'm trying to install Final Cut Pro. I put the CD in the tray and it doesn't install. Usually the install icon comes up on the desktop, but it doesn't. I am logged in when attempting to install it.

The answer to your first question is to use the "Finder". That is how you access your storage media, folders and files on a Mac... I assume by this question that you must be a Windows user.
When you open the Disk Utility, you should see both the drive and any media mounted by the drive. You also went to the System Profiler via "About This Mac". The DVD drive is not shown in the overview, but is found in ATA, and the burner in Disc Burning. In ATA you should see the physical drive and also below, any disc mounted by the drive.
Although application CD/DVD discs should open on the desktop when inserted, the same is not necessarily true of music CD's. What Mac OS X does in their case is dictated by settings in System Prefs, CDs & DVDs.
If you need AppleCare, whatever you do, don't just arrive there without a Genius Bar appointment, or you'll be wasting a trip. As far as contacting Cupertino AppleCare by phone, you can find that at the bottom of the Support page under "Contact Support".
...And I agree with the others, that being descriptive is always best.
    Hope this helps.

  • Installing Final Cut Pro

I want to install final cut pro at home, but I just want the basics that will allow me to edit a home movie and burn it to disc. Can I just install the final cut pro application or do I need anything else, ie studio pro, compressor, motion, etc?'
    Thanks.

Of the Final Cut Studio applications, these titles will do what you describe:
    Final Cut Pro
    Compressor
    DVD Studio Pro
But have you considered using FCE or iMovie/iDVD? Might be more what you're looking for and much cheaper.

Nope- that version is not compatible with Intel Macs like your iMac. You'd need to get FCP7 or FCP X.
