Is it possible to query different databases at once?

I have databases representing some states. I want to get a count of records for each instead of having to query each individual database. So I want the output to look like:
WY 12345
PA 1678
CT 187654

Can you try the below query?
select 'test1',count(*) from dssp.dbo.CompareTable
union all
select 'test2',count(*) From dssp1.dbo.compareTable1
union all
select 'test3',count(*) From dssp2.dbo.compareTable1

  • Is it possible to query which databases are on a databaseserver

    I am trying to create a list of databases to which a specified user can connect.
    The user has to specify the database server, user name and password and I want to show a list of possible databases.
    Can this be accomplished?
    Thanks.

    Thanks for the help. The code below lists the databases in a MS SQL Server. For MySql I think the trick is to use the query "SHOW DATABASES;" with as column name 'Database', but I don't have a MySql Server here at this moment to test it.
        public static List getDatabases(final Connection dbCon) throws Exception {
            List databases = new ArrayList();
            try {
                String databaseName = null;
                ResultSet rs;
                Statement stat;
                stat = dbCon.createStatement();
                rs = stat.executeQuery("exec sp_databases");
                while (rs.next()) {
                    databaseName = rs.getString("DATABASE_NAME");
                    if (!databases.contains(databaseName)) {
                        databases.add(databaseName);

    If you check the execution plans it's quite obvious that the two environments can not be identical. If you have the same (amount of) data, then one of the two estimates is way off. Which one is in the right ballpark, how many rows are returned by the query? The same applies to the remaining operation ids of the plan, which estimate is correct?
    It's very likely that the underlying table/index statistics are not the same, and therefore you get different plans.
    By the way, you're using bind variables, therefore the output of the EXPLAIN PLAN is only of limited use, since the actual plan at run time might be completely different due to bind variable peeking and potentially histograms created on some of the columns (which is the default in 10g due to the "FOR ALL COLUMNS SIZE AUTO" method_opt default parameter value).
    If you haven't disabled the pre-configured statistics collection job that runs every night in 10g, you might get different statistics due to this job already.

  • Select query based on joining of tables from different database is taking too long

    Hi Team,
    Select query on table with millions of records is taking very long time. It took 50mins, the below query is joining on multiple table from two databases DB1.dbo.Table1 contains 100 million records and also Table3 and Table4 (of different database) might
    contain close to 1million records.
    Select T1.*
    From DB1.dbo.Table1 T1
    Join DB1.dbo.Table2 T2 on RTRIM(T1.Col3) = RTRIM(T2.Col3)
    Join Table4 CA on RTRIM(T1.Col1) + T2.Col2 = CA.Col1
    Join Table3 U on CA.Col2 = U.Col2 AND RTRIM(T2.Col2) = U.Col3
    Where U.Col4 NOT IN ('A1', 'A2', 'A3', 'A4', 'A5', 'A6','A7','A8','A9')
    And (T1.flg IS NULL OR T1.flg = 'N')
    And LTRIM(RTRIM(T2.Col2)) NOT IN ('B1','B2')
    How can i improve the performance of this query. Actual thing is update the data in Db1.dbo.table1 based on the conditions but if the select is taking close to 1hr then update will take hours together. Indexes already implemented on all the tables.
    Thanks,
    Eshwar.

    Join Table4 CA on RTRIM(T1.Col1) + T2.Col2 = CA.Col1
    This join is not working with spaces if Rtrim is not used.
    Thanks! Eshwar.

  • Query distributed database with different character sets.

    Hello experts, this is my situation:
    I have two databases A and B, the same version 11.1.0.7, the same OS Suse Linux Enterprise 10 but with different character sets, A has WE8MSWIN1252 while B has AL32UTF8. The database B is my XML DB repository so there I have some XML type tables. I need to query this tables from the database A using a dblink and in fact I have done that but the XML content is trasformed due to the different character sets between the databases. Some time there are data loss and some time there are data missmatch.
    Is there any way to query the tables stored in the database B without problems? I do not know if the following is correct: Maybe I can set the character set for the session in the database A during the time it query the database B. That is, change the character set in fly at session level.
    Do you have any special suggestion?
    I hope you can help me, thank you in advance.

    The Globalization Support Guide for 11.1.0.7 has a chapter on character set migration that should be helpful. AL32UTF8 is a superset of WE8MSWIN1252 but it is not a strict superset. That is, it doesn't meet the second prong of the test in the documentation
    The new character set is a strict superset of the current character set if:
    Each and every character in the current character set is available in the new character set.
    Each and every character in the current character set has the same code point value in the new character set. For example, many character sets are strict supersets of US7ASCII.Exporting the data from the A, changing the character set (or creating a new database with the AL32UTF8 character set), and then importing the data may be the easiest approach in your case.

    but iam not sure if ill be able to create dblinks in my situation which is:
    i need to get data from oracle to be copied to mysql
    this is not a replication acitivity, but i need certain fields from one database and certain from the other
    so what iwas thinking is, if i use an sql query to get all the fields (i need around 40) from the different oracle databases and create a singlefile with one insert per select, i can then read that file into mysql
    instead of creating multiple sql queries for each table and creating separate files and eventually separate tables in mysql.
    can anyone help me here?
    or maybe suggest another approach.
    thanks

    Hi,
    I think dblink is the only option available to get data from different databases. It will work for your case too.
    CREATE DATABASE LINK db_link CONNECT TO user_name IDENTIFIED BY  password USING 'instance_name'you must have the system privilege 'create database link' to create db links. This way you can get the required data and put it in a table in oracle. But i dont know how to put this data from oracle table to Mysql.

  • Query for UDT over different Databases on another Server

    Hi,
    i want to use via query an UDT from another Database on another Server...
    nomal Tables can be Used like this:
    select* from [SVR-Name].Database.dbo.OITM
    But if I try the same for an UDT:
    select* from [SVR-Name].Database.dbo.[@UDT]
    it doesn't work.
    Does anyone have an Idea for me ?
    Thx.
    Markus

    Thx for your replies,
    a query over different Databases on the same SQL-Server is no problem.
    ... but I want to select an UDT which is on another SAP-Server (other location) in a different Database.
    Servername = SVR
    Database = LIVE
    UDT = [@portfolio]
    select * from [SVR].LIVE.DBO.[@portfolio]
    doesn't work.
    (normal query to reach OITM for example:
    select * from [SVR].LIVE.DBO.OITM
    works fine !!

  • Any Possible to merge in different database table??

    HI i tried to merge ,source is a one data base and target is a different data base , i tried to merge its showing error,invalid object name like that , any possible to merge Different DB
    thanks
    pandiyan
    pandiyan

    Hi Pandiyan,
    In SSIS its not good practice to use execute this query(Using Execute SQL Task).
    rather than you can take two different connection (OLEDB Source) and merge there using Merge JOIN control.
     Please follow below link for more details ...........!
    Merge Join

  • Executing the SQL query across 2 different databases of Oracle

    Hello All,
    In Microsoft SQL server we can execute following type of SQL query across 2 different databases:
    select * from TEST1.dbo.GENERIC_TABLE1 union select * from TEST2.dbo.GENERIC_TABLE2;
    Here TEST1 and TEST2 are 2 different databases.
    Can we do the same in Oracle?

    yes you can, but first one has to setup a database link
    Look up CREATE DATABASE LINK and then take things from there!

  • Querying from two different databases

    Hi All,
    I have a Adhoc requirement where in i have to do a select from two tables, but one of them resides on a different database.
    The tables have a common primary key, so i can do a one to one match. Is there anyway to query them without using a DB link?

    Hi!
    I think - if u create a global synonym using that dblink - next time u can use that synonym and u don't have to use any dblink further.
    Regards.

  • Spooling of a query generates different file sizes for different databases

    Please help me regarding a problem with spooling. I spooled a query output to a file from two different database. In both the databases the table structure is the same and the output produced only one row. But the file size is different for the databases. How can this problem occur? Is there any database parameter need to be checked? Both the databases are in same version 10.2.0.1.0.
    before running the spool i did a
    sql> set head off feedback off echo off verify off linesize 10000 pages 0 trims on colsep ' '
    on both the sessions.
    In one database the filesize is *1463 bytes* and on the other the filesize is *4205 bytes*.
    Please help me to find out these discrepancies.

    hi Mario,
    I think you are not getting my point. Both the files contain the same output but their sizes are different. This is due to the no of blank spaces between columns. I wanted to clarify why there is a difference between two filesize when the query output is the same.

    No the data in the columns are exectly the same. But in the larger file i see more spaces between columns where as in the smaller one the no of spaces are less. Can anyone tell me is there any parameter which defines the character which will be replaced while spoolng when you get a column blank/null. But as i have already declared /t as a colsep i couldnot identify why there is the difference in the no of spaces between columns resulting the difference in filesizes?

  • Why would this query return an error that mentions an entirely different database being offline?

    Trying to get a list of fragmented indexes based on a database name.  However,
    SELECT COUNT(*) AS TableFragOver80PctCount
    FROM sys.dm_db_index_physical_stats (null, null, null, null, null )as ts
    INNER JOIN sys.tables t on t.[object_id] = ts.[object_id]
    INNER JOIN sys.indexes i on i.[object_id] = ts.[object_id]
    INNER JOIN sys.databases db ON ts.database_id = db.database_id
    WHERE db.name = 'MY DB NAME'
    AND ts.avg_fragmentation_in_percent > 80.00
    The error I get back
    Msg 942, Level 14, State 4, Line 1
    Database 'VERY DIFFERENT DB' cannot be opened because it is offline.
    I know there is a database on this server that is offline, actually 2 or 3, but not the one Im trying to get information about.  What could cause the above query to have trouble getting index info that is caused by an entirely different database being
    offline?

    FROM sys.dm_db_index_physical_stats (null, null, null, null, null )as ts
    See MSDN sys.dm_db_index_physical_stats
    ;  the first parameter is the database id; if you pass NULL as here, then all databases will be scanned, also your offline one.

  • JMS JDBC store failed to open after switched to a different database machine

              Hi,
              I'm running WebLogic 6.1 sp3/Oracle 8.1.6 and I configure the JMS JDBC store for
              persistent messaging. I was working fine until I switched to use a different database
              machine which has the same software configuration as the old one. It was giving

              created and I was able to query although they don't contain any data. By the way,
              I'm using thin client.

    Hi Michelle,
              I suspect a permission problem where the new tables are created
              using the JDBC driver's default schema, but the prefix
              specifies another schema "qa". So the tables are getting
              created, but aren't found.
              Work-around one:
              manually extract, edit, and run the ddl that creates
              the tables to specify the schema. Prepend
              "qa.JMS_SERVER_" to all table names
              (This is fairly simple to do.)

              Work-around two:
              Don't include "qa." in the prefix.
              (i'm not sure if this will work)
              Work-around three:
              Change the username of the JDBC pool to "qa".
              (i'm not sure if this will work)
              Work-around four:
              Change the schema for the tables that were created
              under the JDBC driver's default schema to "qa".
              (I'm not sure how this is done, or even
              if it is possible. Database specific.)
