yes, it is perfectly safe, it can be used without any issues.

You need a 60W Power Supply with the original MagSafe connection, the recent MagSafe 2 will not fit a 2009 MacBook.

  • I have a late 2008 Macbook Pro last updated to Mavericks OS.  The screen died and it's not worth replacing.  How do I remove the hard drive and use a drive sled to access info I need?

I have a late 2008 Macbook Pro last updated to the Mavericks OS.  The screen died and I took it into an Apple store and was told replacing the screen and the hardware to repair everything would cost almost as much as buying a new laptop or a cheaper model.  I was told that I can use a drive sled to access data I need on my hard drive. How do I remove my hard drive and use a drive sled to get to the information I need?  What makes matters more complicated is I need to update my iPhone and my iTunes/App store purchases.  How can I accomplish this?
My wife has a late 2008 Macbook Pro as well, which I am assuming I need to run my hard drive.  Is there a way to just access just my hard drive without interfering with hers?
I know this is lengthy.  Thanks to whoever looks at this and offers advice/instruction.

the device you need is an External enclosure for a 2.5" (laptop form factor) SATA drive.
A USB-interface enclosure will be slow, but is adequate for this task and for re-purposing as a backup drive later.  A firewire-interface drive would be faster, but is harder to find, more expensive, and faster than needed for this purpose.
The drive will mount as an "extra" drive on your wife's Macbook, and you can drag and drop whatever you wish. You could create a separate Account for yourself on her computer, and use Migration Assistant or just copy your stuff over to the new account. Then it would not interfere with her files.

  • I did a factory reset on my late 2008 MacBook from a Snow Leopard disc. It installed fine, but as soon as I began to use the computer (safari) it froze. Couldn't even force quit. So I held down the power button to turn it off, and now it won't start up.

I did a factory reset on my late 2008 MacBook from a Snow Leopard disc. It installed fine, but as soon as I began to use the computer (safari) it froze. Couldn't even force quit. So I held down the power button to turn it off, and now it won't start up. It goes to the grey Apple screen and just sits there loud as can be. Help! Please keep in mind I've not done anything like this before and am going to need a little hand-holding. Thanks in advance.

Hi. Don't worry it's nothing serious. Insert the Instal Disc (Snow Leopard) and press the C button while turning on the computer. Once you see the desktop, go to Utility and choose Disk Utility. Select the Macintosh Partition on the left window pane and then click on Repair Disk and Repair Disk Permissions on the bottom right corner. Wait for both processes to finish. Click on the Apple icon (top left corner) and choose quit. Your computer should restart. See if it reboots normally. If not you can always reinstall the OS following the same steps. Good luck!

  • Late 2008 Macbook Freezes 5 Minutes into use with newly upgraded Mavericks, works on safe mode; help troubleshooting?

Hi, I have a late 2008 Macbook - I upgraded it from Leopard to Snow Leopard a year ago and things ran relatively smoothly. A friend suggested I try Mavericks after I have been getting a few error messages with snow leopard and was forced to hard restart. I upgraded to Mavericks last night - the installation went smoothly, however Macbook has since begun freezing every time I am using it for more than 5 minutes. I checked some other discussion forums and I wasn't having the same problems as others - Chrome is updated; I don't use Apple Mail; don't have a lot of third party software (I think). I downloaded EtreCheck and ran on both safe mode and normal mode - things seemed relatively normal except I hadn't backed up my time machine (woops). I saw that Sophos was running a lot on start up - I don't use it so I uninstalled it using the developers instructions (Library/Sophos/Uninstall_Sophos) and than trashed the Launch Daemons that were com.sophos...
So far nothing has solved my problem. My macbook will start in both modes - but only functions in safe mode. It will run smoothly in normal mode for 5 minutes or so - and I am honestly not sure what triggers the freeze. I copied numerous log files to see if someone could help identify the problem (they run through 2 hard shut downs and finally a restart in safe mode) as well as the safe mode EtreCheck report. I can get a non-safe mode EtreCheck if that will be helpful, just let me know.
Anyone have any advice on what my problem is? Thanks!

    Hi Carolyn,
Went through step 1 - macbook froze. Went through the second internet plugins trashing - and it froze. It's almost as if it begins processing super slow at some point and then the cursor goes beach ball and eventually I can't do anything. I did another EtraCheck run when I had it started in normal after I erased the internet plugins and I also have the log files that start exactly when it froze up again. See Below:

I am using a late 2008 macbook and have recently purchased a WD passport ultra 1TB drive to use as storage.  I have successfully formatted the drive, and moved files from macbook onto it, however now I cannot locate the drive within FINDER, even though it is showing within disc utility.  Please HELP!!!!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Open a Finder window, and your external drive should show up in the sidebar, under "Devices".
A different way is to go to Finder menu (in the menu bar) > Preferences > General, and tick "External disks". If your external drive is detected by OS X, it will show up at the top right corner of Desktop, so double-click it to access to the content.

I know this is supposedly not possible, but I need to retrieve a specific voicemail from my iPhone which was also "cleared" from the Deleted Messages box. Any suggestions?
This is highly important. I know the number from which the voicemail arrived, but have not been able to figure out how to retrieve it. I accidentally had the voicemail in the Deleted Messages folder, and then Cleared this folder. If there is any possible way I might be able to retrieve this message, even if there is a cost associated with it, please help me.
    Thank you.

I think you maybe able to restore from backup if that voicemail was included in the backup. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766

Hi- My  Iphone 5 wont charge using power cable or USB...I am using a genuine apple charger/cable..this started after I was prompted with new update for IOS 7 yesterday. My phone is dead and wouldnt power up ..have tried resetting using itunes but i doesnt detect the phone and..pressing sleep/home button doesnt do anything

    Update
I guess that it just had a bad connecting port on the phone itself, no clue why it wouldn't work when plugged in both ways other than there is actually some differentiating between the two sides.

Actually the unibody machines switched from an Intel chipset to the NVidia MCP79 chipset.
The thing is tho, what I dont understand is why both late 2008 and mid 2009 motherboards use the came motherboard (both using the same chipset) and still limit the user from doing this. I thinks its just apple's way of saying "Buy a new computer"
Below in the links, NVidia say that their chipset used in the late 2008 systems can support 8GB but its up to Apple if they want to enable it or not.
It's really not fair at all, its been proven that the late 2008 systems can support the update just by a simple EFI update. *Get on it Apple!*

    Hi
Unfortunately, you can't. The new Macbooks are not designed to be connected to any Firewire devices. A wrongheaded decision, sure, but you do have to carefully check these things when you buy a new computer.
    Matt
Matt's right. *Except for the part about YOU having to check carefully before you bought the computer.* See, Firewire is an interface STANDARD for consumer video. Last time I checked, EVERY PC in Best Buy had a Firewire 400 port included. And AFAIK, Apple invented and heavily promoted Firewire for video for the last decade, so it's not unreasonable for consumers to expect all Apple computers to comply with their own standard. ESPECIALLY, Thiago, given the premium price you've just paid for that shiny new MacBook.
Unfortunately, you need to do one of three things:
    1. Attempt to return the MacBook in exchange for the plastic White model. Be assertive in that it is on APPLE'S shoulders to inform the customer they are omitting the Firewire interface.
    2. Buy a cheap PC for editing video. (Yuck!)
    3. Buy a new camcorder. This is the most expensive option (and billionaire Steve Jobs' recommendation). However, Be Warned! Even with your new camcorder, there is no guarantee it will work with your new MacBook. You DO have to research this option carefully. Search Macworld.com for the article: "Tapeless camcorders are not a Mac's best friend"
Good luck. And be sure to let Apple know how you feel! They've left a lot of loyal customers in the lurch on this one for sure!

  • Can my charger, which originally shipped with my iPod A1040 be used with any of the following models without damaging the battery?

I know this is a complicated question, but any detailed explanation as to why or how I appreciate it as I have tested and it does actually charge the 1136, 1051 and 1236, but I have been reluctant to try it on the A1288.
    Question:
Can my charger, which originally shipped for the iPod A1040 be used with any of the following without shortening the battery life or damaging it?
    iPod A1136 (tested, does charge)
    iPod A1051 (tested, does charge)
    iPod A1236 (tested, does charge)
    iPod A1288
    Thanks,
    Josh

Yes, you can use the iPod Mini charger with the new 5th Gen iPod.

I have a late 2009 Macbook Unibody and was curious about upgrading the processor. I just installed 8gigs of ram and was thinking about just trying to make it really fast. I am always in Adobe CS5.5 for my job and want my computer to be as fast as I can make it. Is it possible to install a new processor and is it worth it??
    Thanks

No, the processor and the video card are integrated into the logic board.

  • Use 2006 power adapter (A1172) with late 2008 MacBook Pro?

Is there any reason I should NOT use an extra power adapter I used with my mid-2006 17" MacBook Pro with with my new late 2008 15" MacBook Pro?

No, no reason - it will work fine (it's the same 85 W of power, even if it's the older, larger brick).

  • Is it possible to use your cell phone as your internet through your MacBook

I was just wondering if I could get internet through my cell phone onto my MacBook.
Is it possible and if so then how?
    Thanks,
    Sam

I use a Boost Mobile phone for internet access. It's slow, about dial-up speed, but it's very convenient. Not to mention, the bill is unbeatable.
It's 6 bucks a month. I picked up a Boost Mobile phone and a USB cable for about 35USD. Not to mention, there's no obligation to a contract.
The only problem is that the smallest amount of money you can put on your Boost account at one time is 15 dollars. But look at that compared to other wireless plans.
If you're not in need of bandwidth, I'd recommend it.
