  • Netgear WNR2000 Router (Virgin Media 50Mb/s) & iMac

    Hi,
have just upgraded to the Virgin Media 50Mb/s broadband service and have used the free router they provide - a rather fetching Netgear WNR2000 in shiny black garb.
I did not want to use the USB dongle that is provided with the router as my iMac is 802.11n enabled. I have checked to see that it is enabled as per the Apple knowledge base article.
I have set the router wireless speed at "up to 300Mbps" and it says it is using channels 2(p) + 6(s).
However, I can only get a 130Mbps connection at my iMac which is less than 20 feet away from the router with no walls or phones or other electrical equipment between.
Do I have to enable something on my iMac to get the faster connection speed to be made??
I prostrate myself at the feet of your greater wisdom and await enlightenment.....

I also use Virgin as my ISP and i was lead to believe (by Virgin themselves) that i wouldn't be able to use a wireless at all with them as i was running an intel imac...
I take it this has changed then ?
Sorry to be no help whatsoever Avian !

  • Is it possible to play an Xbox through the iMac 21. If so what do you need to get to do it., Is it possible to play an Xbox through the iMac 21. If so what do you need to get to do it.

Is it possible to play Xbox through a iMac 21 if so what do u need to do it?

Is there a way to configure Snow Leopard to allow for internet but not network access?
Well, 'internet' is 'network access' so at one level your question makes no sense.
If, on the other hand, what you want to do is segregate your Mac from the other machines then that's a different issue. There are numerous ways of doing that, but most would involve some level of interaction with the network administrators. Given their ana^H^H^H attitude towards Macs that may be an issue.
The best way would be to setup a separate VLAN for the Mac. This will create a separate logical network within the company network with only this Mac and the network router in it. No PC would see the Mac, and the Mac wouldn't be scarred by seeing all those PCs. This cannot be done without buy-in from the network admins, though.
A step down from that would be to use one PC in the network as a gateway to the rest of the network. The Mac would talk to this PC, and the PC would pass the data out to the rest of the network. This would require admin rights on the PC, though, which you may or may not have (I've seen a lot of corporate networks… :: shudder ::)
The last option would be to setup an entirely separate internet connection for the Mac but there are logistical issues there, too.
My advice: Buy a dozen Krispy Kremes for the network guys and sweet talk them into building you a VLAN.

  • Possible to watch wmv files on iPad?

I'm new to iPad. Is it possible to watch windows media player files (wmv) on iPad?  Thanks in advance!

    DCLuke-
You can not watch the WMV videos using the iPad's Videos App.  I suggest you search the iTunes App store for a WMV viewer.
One alternative is to convert the WMV files on your computer.  The iPad can play M4V and MP4 videos.  One program that can convert to these formats, is HandBrake.  HandBrake is a free program available for both PC and Macintosh at <Download it now.>.

  • How do i link my time capsule through a virgin media router(netgear))

Hi i am trying to use. My new time capsule as the main wireless router . I have a virgin media netgear router VMDG280. rebooting the router time capsule and computer still results in a flashing amber light
    Thanks
    Steve

I have had the same problem but SOLVED IT this evening.
If you type in your IP address 192.168.0.1 into your google search line it launches you into your virgin media .  Put in your username (in my case the default was 'admin' as I hadn't changed it and my password for my virgin media account (not the router password).  this took me into the settings page to change my Superhub into a modem only.  NB  - you can change this back at a later date.
i then re-booted my virginmedia box and then did a soft reset on the Time Machine and BINGO.
I went into the aiport utility on my imac and it asked to create my own home network name and password.  Everything works fine and connects to my new home network name in the wifi settings.  The time capsule was able to see my network and is now backs up.

  • IMac and Virgin Media TiVo

Hi all, this may be a stupid question but is there a way of connecting a late 2009 iMac 27" to a Virgin Media TiVo box?
Currently we watch Freeview through EyeTV USB connected to rooftop arial.
    Thanks and regards.

Well this is the whole issue - apparently this will only work FROM the iMac TO and HDMI device, i.e. large screen etc to watch something played on the Mac on a larger screen etc.
Apparently the MDP will only accept MDP signals when sending data IN so if you are sending something FROM an HDMI port TO the MDP you will need a converted as it appears to only recognise MDP signals ie other MBP or iMacs etc.
But again, I dont know this so I am asking to see if anyone has experience.
JUst a bit of background, I do not own a TV and cant afford one right now. The Virgin Media service has only been preordered and has to be installed so there is time to cancel it should i find out that I cannot make this work.
I havent tried any of this but am researching to see if it is possible so I know whether to start the tivo service or not or to cancle it.
You might ask why am i using an iMAc as a TV, well we have all the other iDevices at home and it is currently already been used as a TV through the Elgado EyeTV USB stick to watch freeview.

  • Can I watch Virgin HD thru Cinema Display?

    Hi
I've got Virgin Media cable HD box - can I use my HDMI lead and a ???? connector/adaptor to watch through my display?
I've already got the ELGATO eyetv DTT delux, which is okay (but not great). I'm also aware that there is and ELGATO product that can send cable through to the display, but not in HD in the UK.
I can use an HDMI to miniport and send to my macbook pro, but as there is only one miniport I can't get the picture to the display!! Please help me!!!! thanks in advance...

Unfortunately the apple display is HDCP complient which poses "problems" trying to get HD via HDMI from cable systems (not just the UK, US too) on to the display.

  • Switching from Virgin Media to BT

    Hello
I've been a BT landline customer for over 20 years but my internet providor has always been NTL and then Virgin through cable. I would have chose ADSL but for years when performing speed checks I was only able to reach 4-8MB, apparently due to poor telephone lines. I think BT said I would have to pay if I wanted new lines put in but I cannot remember.
I would like to switch from my 50MB (recently upgraded to 100MB) to BT Infinity2. When entering my phone number it says I can get 48.8MB. I would like to know more information about this.
    1. Would BT install a fibre line for me without charge? Would/could they use the existing cable line in my house by NTL/Virgin?
    2. I already have a landline tariff but when selecting a package for broadband it says I must pay an addition 12.50 for a telephone line.
    3. If Infinity2 is not using telephone lines why would one need to buy a telephone line/pay for line rental anyway?
    4. I am utterly annoyed with Virgin Media forcing us to use their Superhub routers - the coaxial cable plugs straight into the router and the routers firmware is appalling. I would prefer, although not necessary, to use my own router. Would this be possible? If so, what type of router would I be looking for? For virgin, it was a "cable modem router".
    5. If BT install their own lines, would they still need the 'MAC address' from virgin? I saw this written in the "switching to" articles and I first assumed this meant that it was possible but to use existing virgin media lines for BT, until I realised that MAC addresses are needed to switch between providors on ADSL lines
    6. What type of support does BT provide for its infinity2 customers? Are the call centres in the UK? Is the support line a chargable call?
    7. I'm wondering out of curiousity, can consumers on infinity2 get rDNS or buy additional IP addresses?
Apologies for the mundane questions and many thanks in advance.

I would like to know more information about this. ***The actual speed that you get with Infinity is dependant on a number of issues including distance to you local cabinet and line quality. The BT estimate is usually quite conservative***

    3. If Infinity2 is not using telephone lines why would one need to buy a telephone line/pay for line rental anyway? ***For BT Infinity a BT phone line is a mandatory part of the product offering***

For virgin, it was a "cable modem router". ***You can use any standard cable router that supports PPPoE, but BT do supply a wireless router called the Home Hub 3 which is fine for most people if perhaps not the most feature rich of devices***

I saw this written in the "switching to" articles and I first assumed this meant that it was possible but to use existing virgin media lines for BT, until I realised that MAC addresses are needed to switch between providers on ADSL lines ***I see no need for a MAC in your scenario**
    6. What type of support does BT provide for its infinity2 customers? Are the call centres in the UK? Is the support line a chargeable call? ***BT use overseas call centres, which I would have to say are the weakest part of the offering***
    7. I'm wondering out of curiosity, can consumers on infinity2 get rDNS or buy additional IP addresses?
***There is no static IP Address offering for infinity, but Dynamic DNS does work fine***
Apologies for the mundane questions and many thanks in advance.
See answers in line, and bear in mind the following...
There are two possible technology types for Infinity- Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) & Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) and it looks like your area uses the latter.  in this case you are still using the existing BT copper telephone cable to your house, but new larger green cabinets will have been installed locally which your phone line will be connected to. These cabinets are then connected back to the exchange using fibre optic cable the fact that the distance to the cabinet is much shorter than the exchange means that much high speeds can be obtained in conjunction with the fact that the technology is VDSL rather than ADSL

  • Access to my Virgin Media email account

    Please could you help
I am having problems accessing my virgin media email account from my Mac.
This seems to be a recent problem (2 - 3 months) which is getting worse by the day.
Note I have no issues with accessing the email account via my iPad or regular PC.
I can access the Virgin Media website
I can access my account on the Virgin media website
but when I click on the email button I get the statement "too many redirects have occurred"
I was able to get on the email if I logged off and closed down the mac and open it again and if I clicked on the "reset Safari" icon but now it just won't let me access this page what ever I do.
I could use the other mail solutions such as Mac mail or google mail but the Virgin account has lots of folders holding historical information so this wouldn't be the perfect solution.
    HELP
    Debs

I can access the Virgin Media website
That's good.  Now you should contact them through their customer support and/or their forums since it's their email client you are having problems with & not Apple's Mail.

  • Is it possible to watch a previously purchased movie on Apple TV without having to turn on my computer?

I just bought a 3rd gen Apple TV. I have some movies on my MacBook which I purchased through the iTunes store. I know I can watch those movies on my Apple TV, but is it possible to watch those movies on my Apple TV WITHOUT having to turn on my computer? In other words, does iCloud support movies, and if so, can apple TV access them directly? My MacBook is on the third floor, and my living room is on the first floor, so I just want to avoid having to turn on my laptop everytime I want to watch one of those movies.

Your past purchases. Available on all your devices.
Now you can download music, movies, and TV shows you’ve previously purchased to all your devices. When you buy from iTunes, iCloud stores your purchase history. So you can see what you’ve bought — no matter which device you bought it on. You can access your purchase history from the iTunes Store on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, PC, or Apple TV. And since you already own the songs, albums, movies, or TV shows in your purchase history, you can tap to download them to any of your devices

  • Adapter for iMac 27" as display for virgin media V+ HD box?

Hi, I'd like to connect a virgin media V+ HD box  box to my 27" iMac [3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, late 2009]
The virgin media V+ HD box provides both dvi and hdmi outputs.
iMac 27" manual states: supports input from external DisplayPort sources (requires cables and adapters, sold separately).
Can anyone recommend an adapter for this purpose?
Ideally, the adapter would carry audio as well as picture and Target Display Mode (shift-F2?) would flip between the two.
    Thanks,

Wht are you trying to do? It sounds like the goal is to watch TV or other video that comes in on the Virgin box and use the iMac as a display. If that is the case please visit www.elgato.com, they supply various devices that can fulfil that need.

  • Unable to connect mac OSX 10.4.11 to wireless network (virgin media) even though iPad, iPhone and laptop ok.  Get message 'password incorrect' even though it works with other devices.  Keep getting message connect to BT unrestricted access.

Keep getting 'do I want to connect to BT unrestricted network' which I have never used before.  I can get my ISP details input but get message 'incorrect password' even though it works with 3 other devices. My network provider, Virgin Media, sent an engineer but he couldn't solve the problem - said network was all ok so problem must be with my iMac (OSX 10.4.11).  When I try to use internet I get BTWiFi is current wireless network - I've never used this! I've tried to change this and virgin media details are accepted, it's just the password stage that prevents me from connecting. I am not very knowledgeable with computers so I really need a step by step guide to solve this problem.  PLEASE HELP!!!

Excuse me barging in on the thread, but I have a lot of experience with Telus, and roaming with my BlackBerry (currently a Z10).  In short, you've been fed some outdated info by the Telus rep. Telus has become very Android-centric, and it seems like a good number of Telus CSR's are still reading from a Legacy BlackBerry trouble-shooting guide.
My Z10 is unlocked, and I periodically use an AT&T sim when traveling in the US.  I have never had to change an email setting to get full email function -- including the SMTP settings.  To put it simply, your device first connects to a network using credentials provided.  At most hotels, for instance, your device will scan for and pick up a WiFi network.  The hotel will tell you the WiFi network name and give you a password to use.  You simply enter the password when prompted, then you may have to agree to certain conditions.  That's it.
Your email settings are just that.  Using whichever network to which you are connected, the user name and password give you access.  The settings coincide with the email provider's server settings.  These don't typically change with the location from which you are connecting.
I'd suggest you take a look at this very helpful email settings tool provided by BlackBerry, if you are having difficulty:  http://helpblog.blackberry.com/2013/03/email-account-validation-tool/
It helps you determine the possible settings for connecting to your email provider.  Different providers offer different connection options, sometimes more than one.  Opinions vary, but my preference in descending order is:  ActiveSync, IMAP, then POP if required.  ActiveSync (aka EAS) and IMAP will offer 2-way sync.
Take a look at the tool and pop a message back here if you have any questions.  Good luck. ~ecm

  • How Do I Watch iMovie 08 Through Camera Onto Normal TV

How do I watch iMovie 08 through camera onto normal tv? On iMovie HD it was in the iMovie preferences, all you had to do was check watch through camera, now there is nothing. I can't imagine that they would have taking this awesome feature away. Can anybody help?
    Thanks,
    Apple Guy 08

Previously this feature involved exporting either DV or HDV to a single destination (mini DV), I suppose introducing AVCHD as an additional destination file type and a multitude of destination media formats (miniDV, HDD, memory stick and DVD) has not only brought about complex issues but introduced unresolved licensing issues.

  • A few questions from a Virgin Media customer

    Greetings everyone
    I am currently a Virgin Media customer but considering switching to Infinity as VMs service continues to degrade and I think it's about time to jump this sinking ship. I have some questions if that is okay;
-From a casual glance at this forum it seems that most people aren't having extreme packet lost, random disconnects, no service for days, unhelpful call center staff outsourced from other countries, poorly designed modems, lies about when services will be fixed, etc etc that we experience on VM. Is this an accurate conclusion, or are there many of the same problems on BT too?
-With VM I just have the internet; no phone or tv package. I have no need to call anyone and absolutely no use for a phone. Can I get a similar package with BT, or do I have to take and pay a phone package on top on the internet?
-I'm a rather heavy downloader, ~40GB a day usually. Is Infinitys "unlimited" downloads truly unlimited like VMs are, or are there hidden "fair usage" clauses?
-Does BT Infinity employ traffic management and bandwidth caps, and if so what are the thresholds of these?
-Any ex-virgin media customers who can share their experience and offer advice is great too.
Thanks everyone, I hope to be joining you soon

I've been infinity 2 for about 10days customer service is bad its a right hand left hand thing, they constantly go over the samething and always send an open reach person out to you stating that they will charge if it's the house or other equipment.
Mine hasn't been right from day one but im still told about the charge nothing has change within the first 10mins of open reach fitting it. I'm talking about my personal experience have a butchers through the forum you will find you answers! Fore warned if fore armed!!
