  • Servlets a good choice for such a game?

    Hi,
    I'd like to write a game like darkgalaxy ( www.darkgalaxy.com)
    Here is a screenshot
    http://images.darkgalaxy.com/home/screenshots/7.jpg
    The game has no animations. It uses a simple web interface and is turn based.
    So it shouldn't be too difficult to write something similar.
    I just wondered if servlets are a good choice for that or if php is more suited. I have virtually no experience with php therefore I'm not sure. php does have the advantage of running on nearly every webserver but then again the project is not that small and the code should be easily extendable and reusable for other similar games.
    thanks

    Your first decision has already been made: a browser will be your client.
    After that decision, it really boils down to what you are most comfortable with. I would say that as the complexity of your application grows the appeal of objects will increase as well. In any case, any server that can have Java installed (which just about any web hosting or co-location company would provide already) can run Servlets. There should be no compatibility issues there.

  • Is this a good way for loading and handling an xml file?

    I'm new to xml files, but it seems to me that a good way to handle them may be this:
    - create an xmltype table with a unique xmltype column
    - load the xml file in the xmltype column of the table
    - writing a procedure for scanning the whole column of the table by using the extractvalue built-in function for inserting the different nodes of the xml file (just loaded) in the final tables (to link correctly the father and son tags with foreign keys)
    Does it seem to you a good way to load the nodes of a xml file in a relation database?
    Thanks!

    Is this the 10gR2 Express Edition you mentioned over in How to load a XML file into a table or a different version?

  • What is a good way for a heavy iMovie HD user to learn iMovie'09 ?

    Hi Guys,
    I have been using iMovie HD to edit my videos since mid 2005. I understand that Apple will, sooner or later, stop supporting iMovie HD with updates etc (it may have done so already).
    I'm doing event and safety videos for the company I'm working for. I tried to edit a video in iMovie'08 and found it too different from iMovie HD and it was difficult for me to "unlearn" iMovie HD.
    What would be a good way to learn iMovie '09 ?
    I would appreciate any tips & pointers. Thanks in advance.
    Sincerely,
    Azman

    I think the best way is to jump in and make a movie. If you get frustrated about something you know you should be able to do, there is probably a way to do it and you can ask here.
    Also, there are some [very good video tutorials here|http://www.apple.com/findouthow/movies>
    I recommend you start with the iMovie 08 videos because they cover some of the basics, and Apple has not gotten around to doing some of these topics for iMovie 09. Especially watch the videos for handling audio and keywords. Then watch the iMovie 9 videos.
    The biggest thing is getting used to a different metaphor. iMovie 6 uses the timeline, scotch tape and scissors metaphor, while iMovie 09 uses a storyboard, copy and paste metaphor more like a word processing program. Both metaphors work. Both do the same thing. But it can be frustrating making the switch. Good luck.

  • Good References for developing in Landscape Mode?

    Just wondering if there's a portion of the Programming guide, or if there are any good sample apps or sites out there with tips and best practices for developing apps with landscape views?
    Googling and searching based on "horizontal or landscape view" doesn't seem to narrow it to quite what I"m looking for.
    Specifically, I have an tab bar app that is mostly portrait, but I want the user to be able to enter a view that is landscape. (whether by button push, or rotating when in a particular view)...I'm hoping for my landscape view to essentially be independent of the rest of the app (i.e. no tab bar, specific actions, graphics, etc...)
    Anyways, just looking for some good starting points for this if there are any recommendations....

  • What would be a good way for me to practice Java...?

    I have all the basics down. I can make text games decently well. I made a Pong game, and I followed a "do it yourself" tutorial that explains what needs to be done, but has you do it.
    What should I do to further my Java skills? I'm not sure where to go from here. Networking seems too advanced. I don't feel too great at graphics either.
    Any suggestions and pointers?
    Thanks for any help.

    I was just wondering if it was too advanced for someone of my level.Might be. I don't know your level.
    But I'll give it a shot.Great.
    Do you know of any good articles or tutorials on
    relational databases? I've found some on Google, but
    I'm not too sure of their quality...If you don't know anything, what difference does it make? Try a few and see how they go.
    A good place to start might be the Sun JDBC tutorial. It won't teach you much about databases, but it has the virtue of being simple. Google for it.

  • TS3090 Is there any good way for using a network account locally on the server?

    We have a bunch of macs at home. I want to be able to login to a laptop and have my account (home dir) in sync with de desktop account in a noninvasive way.
    For achieving this I thought  promoting one imac to be a network profile server would be a good solution.
    This way we can work on any machine and sync portable home directories (phd) with our laptops.
    The server should also be usable as a workstation.
    One problem is: is possible to login on the server (locally) and work in a network account?
    I know it is possible, but this article describes issues.
    Also i am concerned about perfomance because files wil be mounted over afp rather than being on the harddisk. (one workaround would be to have a phd on the desktop, this would however not be possible on the server itsself (unless you have two copies of the home directory there))
    Does anyone have any experience with a simular situation or perhaps some other helpfull insights.

    Sorry, you must have edited your message. When I saw it, only the title showed .
    Embedded is what you want. You can change the windows apperance (e.g. hide the scroll bars) by changing the VI properties.
    Uncheck "request control" in the web publishing wizard, and it will be read only.
    Works fine here in LabVIEW 7.1. I don't remember if 6.1 had any limitations.

  • Best practice or good pattern for developing complex swing UI

    When I develop some a bit complex swing UI which maybe contain many labels, fields etc. my code becomes massive. Especially when I use GridbagLayout, when there are many components on a panel, if I want to add or remove or change one component's position sometimes I need to modify many x, y to adjust. Are there any good pattern or solution for dealing with this? Should I write my own layout? Or to find a UI designer Plugin in eclipse (but I feel the codes generated by designer are usually hard to maintain)? Thanks.

    I've recently been working with GridBagLayout. My current solution for working with this layout is to, whenever possible, create a panel builder class that builds the panel. This only works well, however, if your panel layout can be described in a generic fashion.
    For example, I have a particular layout I want to use that consists of headers that can span the entire width of a panel with sections between the headers that consist of two roughly centered columns such that each section has the same center line between the columns. I can accomplish this with GridBagLayout. So I wrote a panel builder with methods addHeader(Component) and addRow(leftComponent, rightComponent), a few other helper methods, and behind the scenes, it prepares it all using a GridBagLayout.
    Sort of like this:
    MyPanelBuilder builder = new MyPanelBuilder();
    builder.addHeading("Section 1");
    builder.addRow(fooPanel, barPanel);
    builder.addHeading("Section 2");
    builder.addRow(aPanel, bPanel);
    builder.addRow(cPanel, dPanel);
    JPanel myPanel = builder.build();Behind the scenes, the panel builder keeps a list of everything it needs to add to the panel. Then when build is called, it lays it all out in a panel using GridBagLayout and returns it.
    As for extending JFrame for your main application frame and JPanel for specific purpose application panels, I'm still not convinced it's a bad idea.

  • IS designer a good tool for development applications

    Rightnow we are on oracle 7.2 so i wanted to know whether i can use this case tool for all my application development in the future.
    waiting for your valuable suggestions

    No. In my testing of it I found that it failed to do most of what it claimed it would do. I say avoid it.

  • Good way for centering "Fly in" effects?

    Hello Everyone,
       I am trying to center text over a caption box. Both fly in from different areas of the stage. Is there a quick way to make it so they end up centered? Until now I have eyeballed it until I get the two items centered, a tedious process? Any hints on how to do this quickly? Thanks
    Dan

    Either you can edit the XML for the effect; or use the work flow I'm using: create a cross hair with a vertical and a horizontal line that you can position exactly using the Transform accordion. And then put the end point of the motion path over that cross hair.
    Hoping you understand my explanation... Have a look at this blog post, the movie of the first example, where the cards are flying to the same location was using that approach:

  • Is java only portal good enough for LSO learning portal?

    I did several LSO projects on XSS usage type which is ABAP+JAVA.
    Now I wonder if LSO learning portal can be on a JAVA only portal (i.e. not XSS usage type ).
    Could you tell is this possible?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
    Respect to your query , i gone thorough lots of document and came to conclusion that XSS usage type is not required in AS java for LSO .
    You can use LSO on java part.

  • Good way for MacBook to drive a TV

    I have a macbook 7.1, and I want use the mini-dvi port to drive a TV.  So, I need to buy a either a mini-dvi to S-video cable or a mini-dvi to HDMI cable.  My question is whether my MacBook requires a separate audio cable?  Obviously, I prefer one cable.
    If it supports one but not the other without a separate audio cable, which one works.

    kwillard62,
    This desktop has a HDMI and VGA port. If you only have VGA, you can try and find an adapter or a VGA to HDMI cable.

  • Which is the best and user freindly IDE for developing Java GUI application

    Please advice me if there is any good IDE for developing all kind of Java applications.
    I m confused about which IDE to use.
    I have Searched on Net also. and most of the answers i found was for JBuilder and JBoss.
    But cant confirm until u guys suggest me.
    Because i think this is the best place to ask questions about java.
    Please advice

    If you're developing JSPs and Servlets....
    I've found that using Eclipse (which is free) coupled with the MyEclipse plug-in (an advanced J2EE specific plug-in which costs $29.99USD/year) was the best for me. I've tried several free J2EE Eclipse plug-ins, didn't like them. Wasn't a big fan of NetBeans either, but I liked it tons better than the other Eclipse plug-ins.
    Therefore, IMHO for free I'd go with NetBeans, for a small fee I'd go with Eclipse/MyEclipse plug-in.
    If you are new to J2EE but not to Java, you may want to consider going straight to JSF and Sun's Java Studio Creator. This is not free, but the fee is one-time and development is (mostly) visual using Java Studio Creator.
