Good References for developing in Landscape Mode?

Just wondering if there's a portion of the Programming guide, or if there are any good sample apps or sites out there with tips and best practices for developing apps with landscape views?
Googling and searching based on "horizontal or landscape view" doesn't seem to narrow it to quite what I"m looking for.
Specifically, I have an tab bar app that is mostly portrait, but I want the user to be able to enter a view that is landscape. (whether by button push, or rotating when in a particular view)...I'm hoping for my landscape view to essentially be independent of the rest of the app (i.e. no tab bar, specific actions, graphics, etc...)
Anyways, just looking for some good starting points for this if there are any recommendations....

  • A Good Reference for Aperture, Versions, File Names, Changing & Moving

    I was wondering if there is a consensus on a good reference for understanding how Aperture handles files?
    Versions and file names.
    How do you change them in Aperture?
    What happens if you change them in Finder?
    Do I need versions? (can't I just us file names?)
    What about moving the masters, or changing where there are located at in Finder?
    Can I do that in Aperture?
    Can I only do that in Finder?
    Should I never do that in Finder?
    The reason I'm looking for a good reference is because I haven't found one. The user guide (or manual) that comes with Aperture doesn't help with these issues. Search file name and nothing comes back.
    I did get a copy Apple Pro Training Series book for Aperture 3. But I don't think it does a good job explaining how Aperture's file system works, especially in relation to Finder.
    Rather than fill this forum with endless questions (which could be answered by reading the manual and using it the software) I'd like to get a better understanding, from a good source.
    I've only used iPhoto for Mobile Publishing, ATV and now Photo Stream. I don't use it to organize my decades of photos. I don't like having all my photos inside a managed database, which I don't have to do with Aperture. I never understood why you'd want to change the name of a photo in iPhoto, when it never changes the file name. If you send it to someone, after you changed it's name, the other person gets the photo with the original (still in Finder) file name.
    Thanks.

    I never understood why you'd want to change the name of a photo in iPhoto, when it never changes the file name.
    This may help or not but here goes.
    There's a distinction to be made between files and the data they contain. The example I use is as follows: In my iTunes Library I have a file called 'Let_it_Be_The_Beatles.mp3'. So what is that, exactly? It's not the song. The Beatles never wrote an mp3. They wrote a tune, some lyrics, recorded it and a copy of that recording is stored in the mp3 file. The file is just a container for the recording. That container is designed in a specific way attuned to the characteristics and requirements of the data. Hence, mp3.
    Similarly that Jpeg / tiff/ raw/ whatever is not your photo, it's a container designed to hold that kind of data. And along with that data comes opportunities: Metadata, for a start. Exif and IPTC contain vast amounts of information - some it very basic, like the date and time the shot was taken - some of it quite complex, like a lot of details of the settings used in the camera.
    Aperture, iPhoto et al are all about the data and not the file. Import the file and forget about it. Process the image - crop it, fix red eye, run it through the whole gamut of tools in the App and the file never changes at all. Create multiple versions of the image. But there's still only one file. Name it. You name the photo - and that is an entry in the Exif or IPTC. The name of the photo has nothing to do with the name of the file. Because the file is just the tin for the beans.
    Even when you export, unless you specifically choose to export the Master, you are exporting the processed Photo into a different container - that's why you can export Raw as Jpeg, or Jpeg as Tiff. Because the process of export just puts the image into a new container.
    Basically, if you want to manage files you need to use a File Manager. But you're using a Photo manager and expecting it to behave like a file manager.
    And, of course, apps like Aperture and iPhoto have the option to use the Title of the photo as filename on export to the new file.
    Does that muddy the waters?

  • Print Book on 8.5x11 in photo paper for "proof" No Landscape mode :(

    Is there anyway to print pages of a book to 11x8.5 paper and
    (1) Have Aperture rotate the image to landscape mode?
    and
    (2) Have it scale the page to the page being printed onto?

    Well, I may have created my own work-around for this.
    I printed the book as a PDF and then printed the PDF. Doing so scaled the final printed output to the 8.5 x 11 photo paper that I had (even though the book itself will be larger). And it printed in landscape mode.
    So the "trick" is to print the book as a PDF rather than try to directly print it from Aperture to your printer.

  • [1.14] Are photos displayed right for you in landscape mode?

    Hello,
    I upgraded some days ago from 1.02 to 1.14 and noticed that some photos aren't displayed in full screen when in landscape mode. They have these black bars on the sides. The weird thing is that not all are displayed like this and that all (the same) photos were displayed correctly when I used 1.02.
    I took two screeshots to show you the problem:
    http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/7837/picture005wr7.jpg
    Original Size of the picture: 800x600
    http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/8479/picture006ue4.jpg
    Original Size of the picture: 512x314
    It seems that it keeps the aspect ratio, but I don't like it all and want it the way it was on 1.02...
    Have you an idea?
    Thank you very much!

    There is no problem here, it just changes the view in landscape mode. All photos are taken with the same aspect ratio, but the portrait pictures automatically zoom in when you display. If you zoom out on a portrait picture you will see this. There is no problem with your phone, it is just a small change Apple made.

  • References for developing Reconciliation Rules for OIM 11GR1

    Good Day!
    Hi Folks!
    I would like to ask if you can share some references or any documents which tackles on the development or creation of reconciliation rules for OIM 11GR1. Currently, we are trying to pull users from a SAP system and provision them to MS AD. Currently, we want to develop reconciliation rules such that we can avoid doing manual ad-hoc link.
    Aside from the documentation guide, are there any other references there available in helping us to develop recon rules from a simple definition and from there maybe we can pick it up to define a complex one?
    All answers are appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!
    Regards,

  • Best practice or good pattern for developing complex swing UI

    When I develop some a bit complex swing UI which maybe contain many labels, fields etc. my code becomes massive. Especially when I use GridbagLayout, when there are many components on a panel, if I want to add or remove or change one component's position sometimes I need to modify many x, y to adjust. Are there any good pattern or solution for dealing with this? Should I write my own layout? Or to find a UI designer Plugin in eclipse (but I feel the codes generated by designer are usually hard to maintain)? Thanks.

    I've recently been working with GridBagLayout. My current solution for working with this layout is to, whenever possible, create a panel builder class that builds the panel. This only works well, however, if your panel layout can be described in a generic fashion.
    For example, I have a particular layout I want to use that consists of headers that can span the entire width of a panel with sections between the headers that consist of two roughly centered columns such that each section has the same center line between the columns. I can accomplish this with GridBagLayout. So I wrote a panel builder with methods addHeader(Component) and addRow(leftComponent, rightComponent), a few other helper methods, and behind the scenes, it prepares it all using a GridBagLayout.
    Sort of like this:
    MyPanelBuilder builder = new MyPanelBuilder();
    builder.addHeading("Section 1");
    builder.addRow(fooPanel, barPanel);
    builder.addHeading("Section 2");
    builder.addRow(aPanel, bPanel);
    builder.addRow(cPanel, dPanel);
    JPanel myPanel = builder.build();Behind the scenes, the panel builder keeps a list of everything it needs to add to the panel. Then when build is called, it lays it all out in a panel using GridBagLayout and returns it.
    As for extending JFrame for your main application frame and JPanel for specific purpose application panels, I'm still not convinced it's a bad idea.

    No. In my testing of it I found that it failed to do most of what it claimed it would do. I say avoid it.

  • Eclipse with Jazz (Rational Team Concert) - Best References for Study?

    My employer has bought a C/C++ application codebase from a contractor which does not use Eclipse as part of its development picture. Basically a big /src tree organized for building with Autotools, with a few top-level build scripts masking some of the Autotools complexity for ignorant bystanders.
    Developers for the project team I'm on have been using Eclipse as our main IDE for 3-4 years now.
    TL;DR only for editing the Java code which was part of the old application we're now moving away from (a mix of Java/JNI wrapping some very old C/C++ code, built and installed using lots of proprietary UNIX script).
    So: none of us are sophisticated Eclipse users, but we do want to pull our new C/C+ code into Eclipse and use more of its ability to support building and debugging. We've had some success setting up the code within Eclipse as an Autotools project...but what is currently causing grief, is that the project is also moving to Jazz / RTC (Formal) for CM. None of us understand how the code can/should/must be organized within the RTC repository, or within our local workspaces (Eclipse workspace, or Jazz workspace/repository/sandbox), so that when we look to pull multiple copies of it into our development boxes to support our usual average of 2-3 different work items each (a) we can get it downloaded within Eclipse in a usable form (properly configured project) (b) we can get our change sets delivered back, without having to adopt all sorts of highly error-prone workarounds to avoid delivering project-specific settings that aren't part of the codebase as conceived by CM right now. Right now, that's code being held as close as possible to the contractor's delivered (non-Eclipse) package.
    We do gather that Jazz/RTC is meant to work with Eclipse.
    My question is, can anyone recommend a good reference for figuring out how to get this working with a minimum of Eclipse-project pain?

    Sounds like

    If you're developing JSPs and Servlets....
    I've found that using Eclipse (which is free) coupled with the MyEclipse plug-in (an advanced J2EE specific plug-in which costs $29.99USD/year) was the best for me. I've tried several free J2EE Eclipse plug-ins, didn't like them. Wasn't a big fan of NetBeans either, but I liked it tons better than the other Eclipse plug-ins.
    Therefore, IMHO for free I'd go with NetBeans, for a small fee I'd go with Eclipse/MyEclipse plug-in.
    If you are new to J2EE but not to Java, you may want to consider going straight to JSF and Sun's Java Studio Creator. This is not free, but the fee is one-time and development is (mostly) visual using Java Studio Creator.
