Is mailto causing new instance of IE Browser to launch?

In Captivate 3, I have a button defined to Open a URL like this:
mailto:[email protected]?subject=Important
I have the button set to allow one attempt and After last attempt = No Action
The problem is that an instance of the IE browser opens, and then an email (Outlook) opens. The email instance looks fine.
How can I prevent the instance of the browser window from opening?
Thanks!

Hi Charlie,
I just tried this in Firefox and you are absolutely right. Very strange indeed. There must be a difference in how IE and FF process the mailto command.
Anyways it shouldn't be too much problem to set up the JavaScript function for it to work in IE.

  • Closing the Second instance of the browser.

    Hello,
    I am working on a project written in Java. When applet is running in Browser, we can open the new instance of the browser using File->window->new (or pressing CTR-N). Since the second window runns in the context of first window, It is causing some problem.
    Is there any way for me to close the second instance of the browser from my Java applet?? If not is there any way for me to disable both the File->new->Window and CTR-N options.
    I am new to java and java script. If it is not possible in Java Applet, is it possible in java Script. Please Provide me with full information.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Ratna.

    Hi,
    There is no way you can close the browser window that the user opens. Even if there is a way through some hack, it will not completely give u a solution, independant of browsers and all. And moreover it is not advisable to restrict the user like that.
    A more elegant way would be to handle it in the server side. I can give u one ligical way. U can make the page expire as soon as it gets loaded. U can do that by using the code below. And you have to have a server side function to check for a request from the same client machine for the same page.
    <%
        if (request.getProtocol().compareTo("HTTP/1.0") == 0)
            response.setHeader("Pragma", "no-cache");
        else if (request.getProtocol().compareTo("HTTP/1.1") == 0)
            response.setHeader("Cache-Control", "no-cache");
        response.setHeader("Expires", "-1");
    %>So when the user opens a new browser window, he will be shown page expired message, or the page will be requested again from the server. U can have a map storing the remote address and the session of the user.

  • Why is it that sometimes when I use my middle mouse button to click on a link to open it in a new tab I will have it open it in an entirely new instance of Firefox instead of a new tab?

    Occasionally when I click on a link with my middle mouse button, instead of opening the page in a new tab, it will open a new instance of Firefox.
    I've looked through some of the settings and I wasn't able to find anything. It really gets to be bothersome at times because I prefer things to be in tabs instead of a new browser.

    It's not specific sites. I can middle-click on the same link 50 times and it will open it in a new tab 45 times and 5 of those times, it will randomly open it in an entirely new window. I don't know what's causing this.
    It happens so randomly that I don't know how to pin-point what it could be.

  • Internet Shortcuts saved on Desktop open new instance of Firefox 3.6 using clean profile--how can I make it open all shortcuts using current profile?

    I rely heavily on Firefox's profiling ability to assist me in my web design projects. Lately, using Firefox 3.6, I have run into some problems with how it opens Internet Shortcuts that are saved locally (i.e.- shortcuts that reside on my Desktop). When I double-click on one of these shortcuts, a new instance of Firefox 3.6 is loaded with the saved website from the shortcut, but it's also initialized a fresh profile (i.e.- my bookmarks are gone, no add-ons, etc.--it's as if it uses some sort of "hidden" clean slate to load the shortcuts).
    Is there any way to force Firefox to load all shortcuts into whatever profile I'm currently using at that given moment? I think the reason this has happened to begin with is because of the fact that I did some stuff to Internet Explorer awhile back that caused some problems with the Internet Shortcut associations and it all led to this eventuality.
    I'm running Windows XP Pro and have the following profiles with my Firefox versions:
    "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox 3.6\firefox.exe" -no-remote -p Firefox3.6
    "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox N\firefox.exe" -no-remote -p FirefoxN
    "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox 3\firefox.exe" -no-remote -p Firefox3
    "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox 2\firefox.exe" --no-remote -p Firefox2
    When I go into the "Folder Options / File Types" and double-click on "Internet Shortcut", I have the following within the "Advanced" settings (for the "open" action):
    Action: open
    Application used to perform action: rundll32.exe shdocvw.dll,OpenURL %l
    "Use DDE" is checked...
    "DDE Message" is blank...
    "Application" is "shdocvw"...
    "DDE Application Not Running" is blank...
    "Topic" is "System"
    Again, I think the root problem here is to do with the profiles and how they're handled when being opened with Firefox but I can't discern how to apply a fix with all this as I've obviously goobered this up a bit. I would really appreciate some professional knowledge on this and would prefer to avoid any reinstalls of anything if possible.

    To save your sanity with this issue, my advice is to find a method other than desktop shortcuts to open those URL's.
    1. Desktop shortcuts are going to open the Default Browser.
    a. With multiple versions of Firefox installed that would be the last version that was installed when you have Firefox set as the Default Browser in Windows..
    b. The Default Browser is going to use the Profile that shows a Default=1 in the profiles.ini file.
    c. The Default Browser with the Default Profile isn't going to open if you have any other versions of Firefox already running, and the -no-remote command line parameter doesn't work in this situation.
    2. The use of multiple Profiles and multiple versions isn't officially supported by Mozilla, and all the Bug reports that I have ever read about Requests for Enhancement have been WONTFIX'd by the developers. Basically we have to work with the limitations in Firefox and maybe improvise work arounds by ourselves. I've even seen a few threats about removing Profiles altogether in RFE Bug reports about Profiles.
    I have had so many problems over the years with this Default Browser / Default Profile thing over the years that personally I find it easier to just set Opera as the Default Browser in Windows rather than have a Profile get b0rked because some other program I am using decides it wants to open the Default Browser unexpectedly. I don't use Opera for much, but it is a lot better than IE for purposes of being the Default Browser, considering the quirks I have seen with Firefox and multiple Profiles.
    I have written a number of postings over at the MozillaZine Builds forum over the years about installing multiple versions of Firefox and using multiple Profiles. There's a lot of tips and comments provided by other multiple Profile users in one of those threads. Why don't you read those threads and see if it gives you some ideas or solutions I haven't thought of.

  • ADF viewScope is creating new instance without navigating away from view

    Hello,
    I'm using JDeveloper version 11.1.1.6.0.
    In a Portal application, I'm using view scoped Managed Beans. When I navigate to a page, as expected one instance of the Bean is created. I have dependent selectOneChoice objects inside this page, therefore a partial page refresh is generated when the user chooses a value, a value change listener is called, I read bean variables and do my thing. But here's the catch, a new instance of the Managed Bean is created before the value change listener is called. I have no idea why. According to documentation the viewScope bean should persist until the viewId changes. The end result is I'm screwed trying to read variables that should persist from page load inside this value change listener.
    But wait, that's not all. The issue here is the very first partial page refresh (or whatever it should be called). Only the first partial page refresh will cause the creation of a new managed bean instance. Any subsequent ones will not.
    So it goes like this:
    Page load -> @PostConstruct runs once -> Partial page refresh -> @PostConstruct runs again -> Partial page refresh -> @PostConstruct doesn't run -> Partial page refresh -> @PostConstruct doesn't run...
    I'm really at a loss of options here, the @PostConstruct running twice inside the very same view in a viewScope Bean is news to me. But then again, I'm new to ADF so what do I know. I noticed this happens with every viewScope bean in my application, not just this particular one. It just so happens that only in this case this became a problem.
    I'm in an all out war against this thing for more than a day now. The internet is my last resort before I make some dumb workaround that will consume me in my sleep. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    I'm determined to fix this thing no matter what the hell it takes.
    I found out exactly what is happening, even though I'm not sure why it happens. But the important question here is how to fix it.
    Here is the first request, the one that happens when I navigate to the page:
    http://localhost:7101/teste-Portal-context-root/faces/pages_test?_adf.ctrl-state=18hjxv8lyw_4Here are all the subsequent ones, the ones that happen when I select a choice:
    http://localhost:7101/teste-Portal-context-root/faces/oracle/webcenter/portalapp/pages/test.jspx?_adf.ctrl-state=18hjxv8lyw_4It's no wonder the server is confused and creates a new bean instance. Now what the hell? Why are they different? But more importantly, can I fix the first one? Can I force the bean created by the first one to answer for the second one?
    I still don't know. But hopefully I'll find out.

  • Best practice for creating a bulk of new instances

    Hi,
    My customer has a requirement to create a bulk of 30,000 new instances by scanning a database table (an export from a billing system) which contains a list of a call center tasks (interactive) to be performed. They will be executed throughout the month.
    What is the best way to do it? If the answer is "this is a worst practice" that's a good answer too, but the question is how do I provide a solution to their needs.
    When the process was executed as is we ran into the maximum limit of 1,000. Configuring the automatic item queue removed the 1,000 limit exception but caused JTA timeout and other exceptions against the engine database.
    It seems to me that some sort of division into bulks of a few hundred instances should be the way to do it instead of just exploding the engine with so many instances. Am I right? If so, how would be the best way to code it? If not, any other suggestions?
    Any recommendations would be highly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    ~ronen

    Hi,
    Know how you feel.
    Others are sure to have other ideas, but here are a thoughts:
    1) You might also want to consider only creating 995 in a single transactional boundary at a time. Once 995 have been created, end the transaction so it will commit. You could then fire another transaction that creates another 995. Keep doing this in separate transactions until all have been created. Sure you know many ways you could keep track of where each group of 995 ended and where your next group of 995 should begin, but a common technique is to keep track of the last row processed in a separate database.
    2) Sure you've thought of this, but consider running this from a Global Automatic that is scheduled to run at a time when everyone's gone home. The last thing you want is to get complaints from the end users about performance. Their interaction will be degraded and your creations will take longer.
    3) If you can, be especially conservative about your instance size when creating instances in a batch. Avoid adding attachments and binary variables as they are being created (both of these can potentially be huge). Get rid of the incoming argument variables that you do not need right away in the process. Many times you can look up the additional information downstream when needed later in the process.
    4) Note what is happening immediately downstream of your Begin activity in the process. If for example, you have more than one automatic activity that immediately follow the Begin, consider either turning all the automatic activities it a procedure (one transaction) or set your process to "Greedy" execution. If you have a Multiple activity immediately after the Begin, you might be creating 10x the number of instances (e.g. your Multiple's logic creates 10 copies). If the is the case, you might want to throttle back the number of instances created in one transaction even further.
    Hope this helps,
    Dan

  • When I select a link on a site and this opens a new instance of Firefox, the link page is blank; but OK when the link is displayed in a new tab on same instance of Firefox.

    This happens on many sites eg just went to Virgin Media
    http://www.broadband-finder.co.uk/broadband-directory/virgin-media/?li=3

    Is there a setting somewhere where I can stop these links opening a new instance - or at least display the information if they do?

  • Windows 64-Bit Oracle DBCA creating new Instance ORA-27102: out of memory

    Wondering has anyone encountered this?
    We are running Oracle 10 R2 running on Windows Server 2003 ( This database is on a 64-bit Platform)
    Memory capacity is 16 GB on the server.
    We are using DBCA to streamline db creation of the new “EDR” DB instance – here are a few different attempts we’ve done:
    (all have failed )
    FYI - during this installation we’ve monitored the memory allocation/usage of the Windows Server and there
    was about 13-14 GB Free
    The existing instance takes up less than 4GB of space.
    We tried following:
    1. Allocating 8GB of Memory to new EDR Instance without shutting down other Oracle Instance.
    2. Allocating 8GB of Memory to new EDR Instance and shutting down other Oracle Instance
    3. Rebooted Server keeping other oracle instance shutdown.
    4. After Reboot Allocated 8GB to new EDR Instance
    5. Attempted allocating less memory 2GB to new EDR instance
    6. Early this morning we also tried omitting backup scheduling as part of configuration for DBCA
    for that instance.
    Each time we received error in DBCA GUI during DB Creation at 2% completion

    After much effort it was discovered it was a setting during the installation of a parameter which caused this error. Using the TEMPLATE to create a new instance, you can setup parameters
    LOCK_SGA = TRUE
    causes this error. In addition if in our situation, even if we did not use the "template" created a barebones DB instance. Once the parameter is updated in SQL*Plus it will cause the datbase to be in a in operable state.
    You can start it up with a PFILE to fix it, In windows it required modifying the registry to FORCE the PFILE to load, by running on the commandline to use the PFILE it failed.
    Hope this helps someone in the future..
    ON WINDOWS DONT USE
    LOCK_SGA = TRUE
    It may work fine for Unix/LINUX OS? But in our current config it had problems.

  • Opening new tabs makes the browser window wider

    when opening a new tab in safari
    it makes the browser window bigger (at the bottom)
    but not only at the bottom actually
    after a few close-open's it also starts growing at the top
    and for me it's unacceptable cause there are folders that i need fulltime access to (at the top)
    is there a way (a script) to prevent safari "grow" and make the browser window bigger in a while ?
    i don't really know why is it happening because if you press cmd+t it opens a new tab and the browser window kinda slides bigger at the bottom but then if you press cmd+w it does the opposite and the browser window stays the same size after those actions
    i can't follow but after some time it starts to be bigger not only at the bottom
    it grows til the dock and then starts growing at the top
    is there a way to prevent that ?
    i mean take opera for example. it always stays the same size and new opened tabs take the "inside space" if you know what i mean. the browser window doesn't get bigger. there is space allocated especially for tabs
    i like safari but it is very important for me that it stays the same size all the time
    i have all windows and folders situated exactly where i want them and if something moves and covers other items, it gets uncomfortable
    thank you

    (i have 'secrets' app installed and it makes pop up windows open in the same browser window, so it might be becasue of that)
    Yes, it sounds like this is the cause.
    Some pop-up window code forces the new window to be a certain size. Since it's intended to open in a new window, that normally wouldn't cause problems. But you're forcing the pop-up to open as a new tab in the current window, which causes the current window to be resized to that new page's defined size.

    another thing please i clecked the check box in the Start Engine dialog box so that it wont apear again is there any way to get this dialog box showing again ??? because i need to delete the old instances may be this causing this problema

    I had a similar problem and tried changing the max size of variables. But, as you said, it was of no use.
    I later found that my .project.xpld was corrupted due to a merge conflict. Using the older version of this file, solved my issue.
    I would suggest you to see if you had changes in project.xpld that may be causing it. Try moving to the working copy and do them again.

  • Alt+[m] calls up a new instance of Firefox when one instance is already running??

    I have another program, DataCad v15, which uses macros. Alt+[m] is one of those macros and it will call up a new instance of Firefox when using DataCad. In trying to trouble shoot the problem I found that entering the macro when DataCad is NOT running, it will call up a new instance of Firefox. Any explanation for this????

    More info:
    I have been using DataCAD and the fore-mentioned macro for years. I have been using FireFox for years although not as long as DataCad. I never had this problem before!
    I have solved the problem by changing out the keyboard and (wireless Logitech) mouse. '''BUT''' there have not figured out the cause. The keyboard (s. I have 3) is a Gateway Anykey programmable keyboard (with another set of function keys on the left - very useful in DataCad. Keeping the new mouse (wired MS) and switching back to the Gateway keyboard still calls up FireFox despite "de-programming" all programmed macros and re-mapped keys several times.
    I can find no documentation about Alt+m, as a macro for calling up FireFox in MS XP or Mozilla, so that mystifies me. This problem exceeds my computer expertise.

    Hi,
    With regards to your query, whenever a report is scheduled an instance of it will be created.
    Therefore, it is not possible to schedule a report without creating an instance.

    I need to transition my 1st Generation Apple TV from an older instance of iTunes on my iBook to a new instance of iTunes on my new Mac... How do I get the 5 digit Network code to come back? Is there anyway for 1st Generation Apple TV to be synched to two instances of iTunes or do I have to choose one or the other? I appreciate any advice or suggestions. Thanks!

    The 5 digit code is every time different. That does not matter. Just integrate every device into your network.
    You can connect many computers to Apple TV but syncronisation works exactly with one computer. That's why I use "streaming". But you can sync one computer, then another, and so on. The content on your Apple TV is the content from your computer that has synced last. But you can not mix it.
    The new Apple TV has no syncronisation. Everything is streamed,
