Is my mac in risk?

Hi,
Im new here.
I bought an imac in december and im learning how to handle this.
Few days ago i was on the internet  and when i shut a window i saw my webcam was switched on. I saw my image in the deskto. I shut the webcam app down imediatelly, so i didn t see what the app was it. I imagine it was phototobooth.
Now im worried about being invaded.
I scanned my computer with three anti virus. There aren t any trojans or other malwares in it.
But, i wanna know whether its possible someone have invaded my computer by my IP number.
If yes, the invasor could open apps in my desktop?
Im really paranoid.
Help me.
Thanks.

My firewall wasn t turned on.
That's as it should be for the most part. See Do I need a firewall?.
Could i realize if someone was controlling my computer, like making me looose control of.my mouse or something like this?
I'm not sure that I understand what you're asking. Are you saying you actually saw your mouse moving on its own, or just speculating about whether that's possible? If the former, see:
My mouse keeps moving around on its own, as if someone is remotely controlling my Mac!
Most likely, all that happened here was that you accidentally opened PhotoBooth or Facetime while opening some other app, and that window ended up hidden behind something else.

  • Is anybody tell me which is the best setting for firewall, Flash player, safari and other applications  to protect my mac from risk

what are the best setings to protect from risks

    Hi.
I've been a Mac user since the days of the Mac Plus, about 1986.
It's been my experience that the system defaults are generally enough to keep your Mac safe.  I know there are going to be others who will swear up and down that you HAVE TO do more... but the setup that ships with the newest Macs is pretty d*mn good.
The best thing you can do to protect your machine is practice a little self control.  By that I mean, just follow some basic rules when your on using the machine and the internet.
    > Don't download files or apps from untrusted sites... sites you don't know.
    > Don't allow an application to install itself if you didn't initiate it. (This is how a trojan would infect a machine.)
    > Don't click on links in your e-mail if it's from someone you don't know.
    > Don't share your user IDs and passwords with others.
    > Install and use an anti-virus (Kaspersky, Symantic, et al).
    > Use Software Update regularly.
There are other basics that you should keep in mind when using your Mac, and I'm sure others can add to this.
Most of the issuse that people have when using Macs is because they don't use common sense... not because their machine has been hacked or attacked.
OS X is pretty secure as it ships. And Apple is pretty proactive in keeping it updated.

  • NetWeaver Basis support...with a Mac???

Those of us who prefer a non-Windows desktop platform are often frustrated and disappointed with the lack of support we find for our platform of choice in the mainstream business world. But, again some of us are stubborn enough to stick to our guns and try to live an “alternative” lifestyle.
Recently, after being a full-time employee for over 12 years, I decided to become an independent NetWeaver Basis consultant. So, one of the first things I had to think about was having a laptop for my new business. Having recently bought a Macintosh laptop for my personal use (just a couple of months before I made up my mind about going independent), my decision was actually about whether or not to buy a Windows laptop or use my Mac and risk my future clients denying me access to their office networks.
    Why a Mac?
Being a Unix fan, I love the idea of having a Unix-based desktop (in case you weren't aware, Apple's operating system’s core is a BSD Unix called Darwin). I can run the Mac Terminal application and develop/test Unix scripts right there, and run SSH and X-windows and other Unix tools without the need for add-ons. Plus, audio, video, modem, wireless and every other piece of hardware on my laptop works like a charm out of the box -- which is usually not the case with most Linux distros. All that apart from the legendary simplicity and elegance of the Macintosh user interface.
But, as you probably know, not everything in a Mac lover’s life is sweet potatoes, especially if you work in the non-Mac-specialized IT world. Two of the main drawbacks (for me, anyway) are the relative shortage of free software and utilities as compared to Windows and Linux (though this is getting better as more people use Macs), and the lack of support from many software vendors in the business arena.
SAP, I must say, is one of the few large business software vendors that have always (since I can remember) provided a Mac client. Not as nice as its Windows-based cousin, but the Java GUI does the job (for the most part) ...in the ABAP-based world, that is. However, SAP does stop short of providing Mac support for all NW front-end components. And since lately I’ve been focusing on Portal and XI, I will need more than just SAPGui in order to support my future clients with my Mac.
So, this is where things start getting more difficult:
SAP’s official position on Portal Administration functions is that Internet Explorer (which only runs on Windows) is the sole supported platform. Nevertheless, I have tested most of the basic functions to work well on Firefox for Mac.
As far as XI, I believe the Java Web Start-based Integration Builder tools are also only officially supported on Windows. But since Web Start runs on the Mac as well, there is in theory no reason why the IB tools would not work properly on my laptop, and my initial testing of them has been successful.  By the way, the same goes for other Java-based GUI tools such as Visual Admin, SDM GUI, and even SAPinst. All of which I have tested to work ok - just for fun, as I usually prefer to run those tools via VNC or X emulation.
In any case, living outside or on the edge of official SAP support is not a wam a cozy feeling, if you ask me.
Some other things a NetWeaver consultant might need that you can’t run on a Mac are:
NetWeaver Developer Studio  (though I want to try tweaking the Mac version of eclipse, just for fun, but haven't had a chance yet).
Other specialized NW front-end components, such as the ones used for MDM.
    Microsoft Project.
    Microsoft Visio.
    NetMeeting.
So, with all of the above shortcomings and iffiness, who is going to try to support SAP customers using a Mac?????
    I, for one.
I'm not sure how successful I will be, but here’s my basic checklist for the road:
SAP SW:          SAP GUI for Java
              SAP Download Manager
    Browser:          Firefox
    Office suite:     OpenOffice.org
Project SW:     Project Viewer by Steelray
              Omni Plan
    Diagramming SW:     Omni Graffle Pro
Remote Desktop:     RDC client for Mac (from Microsoft)
              Chicken of the VNC
VPN clients:     Nortel Contivity and Cisco VPN clients for Mac
Oh! and, yes... Virtual PC for Mac with Windows XP Professional...to run IE, NWDS and all the other stuff you still can’t run on a Mac .  After all, I can’t afford not to be able to support my clients! I promise to use it only when nothing on the Mac will do ;). Perhaps I will be able to do without it some day?

    Hi all,
at first let me tll you, my engish is not the best.
The next I wont tell you is the important thing. I work as a SAP-Cosultant to develop different ABAP Report and WebAS BSP's. Since 1998 I use first PowerBook and now MacBook Pro.
I use this Machines, because, I am a great fan of Macintoh Computers and the Mac OS X TOO. For me it is simply to use, works in all kinds in all Customer-Networks no Problems with Firewall-Tools, and so on, and so on.
I work with the SAP Java-GUI. But in some kinds i need the Windows SAP Gui because the Java-GUI has Problems or can not do the work had to do.
For developing and testing the BSP-Applications I take Firefox on the OS X-Side equal on the Windows-Side. Firefox has very good tools for developing HTML like FireBug and Web Developer. The complete Pages the Custom was to see with teh Windows IE. In same cases I present the Aplication to the Customer with Safari und he ask me why the pages looks i Max OS X so pretty und with the IE so ugly. This is a very nice moment
But a last, nearly i have the same questons than Carlos Herrera tell us.
    Greetings

  • I am using a macpro 2006. If i upgrade cpu from dual xeon to quadocore. I can run mac osx 10.9 ?

I can answer for me about Mac pro 2006. i want to run mac os 10.9

No, because the problem of your Mac is related to its firmware. It has got a 32-bit EFI which cannot start up a 64-bit operating system like OS X Mavericks.
Alternatively, there are illegal ways of running OS X Mavericks in your Mac, but they may put your Mac in risk.

  • Attacking the Mac

A report today on state radio (PBS) warned that
since Apple is having a field day on account
of Microsoft's problems with Vista, the news
is not all good for Mac because malicious
programmers are now going to start in on Mac.
To pro video producers and aspirants, I have
only one thing to say: I have been very lucky
to make some right choices in the hi def mission
and any pro willing to go to the time and expense
to get their system up and running, it's a small
sacrifice to dedicate your mac to video or audio
    (or whatever your professional interest)production.
Now I don't believe this threat is
going to get off the ground. I know enough to know
that hacking and virus proliferation could be stopped
instantly if the authorities cared to stop it. Still,
I'm not going to put my Mac at risk online when I
have a couple of Athlon and Intel PC's sitting
around doing not much more than print work.
Either that or buy another Mac, if you want
to sit around a wi-fi and surf myspace. It also
irks me to see designers sitting around at work
howling at some email on the company production
machine, especially when it's a nice clean Mac.
What do the other shooters think?

    Hi ed_shaw-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple boards
I kind of lost faith with all of the technology "doom and gloom" reporting back when "they" said that the Y2K bug would bring the civilized world to it's knees. I am still waiting for that one.

  • How do I access my original iTunes account on new MacBook?

I recently purchased a MacBook Pro. I have my original iTunes account set up on my old laptop, which I am unable to even turn on because it needs to be repaired (which I really have no intention of doing now).  How do I access my old iTunes account/downloads to be on my new Mac?  There was a message that read something to the effect of "cannot have your iTunes account set up on more than one computer," I think.  I'm not even able to sync my iPod to my new Mac without risking losing all of the content that is on my iPod.  I have iTunes open on my Mac, am able to send downloads there, but I do not think I am signed in (they are all NEW downloads, nothing old from old laptop).  PLEASE HELP!!  Thanks in advance.

In other words, how can I access my iTunes library/content from iTunes on my other computer?

  • Best Safari version for 10.6.6

I'm running Safari 5.0.2 on a 15" Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard 10.6.6.
I'm having issues with some sites so wish to try another version of Safari to see if that will help.
I downloaded versions 5.0.2 (just for safety if I had to return to it), 5.0.3 and 5.1.1, all of which said they were compatible with Snow Leopard.
When I attempt to install 5.0.3 it says it cannot install as it needs OS version 10.6.5
When I attempt to install 5.1.1 it says it cannot install as it needs OS version 10.6.7
Even when I attempt to install 5.0.2 it says it cannot install as it needs OS version 10.6.4
What Gives?  Is there a version of Safari out there that will install onto OS 10.6.6?
Please don't recommend me changing my operating system, I am staying with this version for other compatibility reasons.  The question is:
Is there a version of Safari out there that will install onto OS 10.6.6?  And if so can you recommend the site in which to find it?  Thank you.

    Hi..
Is there a version of Safari out there that will install onto OS 10.6.6?  And if so can you recommend the site in which to find it?
Never install anywhere but from the Apple support page.
Not running the latest Mac OS X puts your Mac at risk for malware. For whatever reason you are not running v10.6.8, consider updating to v10.6.8 and Safari 5.1.5.
All you have to do is click your Apple menu > Software Update

  • Time Machine: External Hard Drive with Additional Files + Back-up

    Hi-
I am hoping someone can clarify something for me. I use a 500GB external drive (WD-My Book) to back-up my macbook periodically (2x month). I also use this same external drive to store additional files from an old computer.
I just spoke with some folks at Apple and they confused me and made me think that I might have inadvertently deleted some of the original non-back-up files. However, I have scoured the drive and everything seems to be there IN Addition to the backups.backupdb folder.
Can someone reassure me that I have not somehow corrupted/lost either the original files or the back-up files?
I have read the tutorials posted in 2009 - and realize that I should have partitioned the drive, but I didn't. Moving forward I will purchase a dedicated drive just for back-ups - but want to be able to sleep tonight and not worry . . .
    Thanks!

    Wow-Thanks again.
Apple Support was marginally helpful. After the rep told me I probably lost data, my anxiety rose . . .
My original Time Machine question to Apple Support =
My MacBook cannot handle all the media I have. So, I bought a Seagate 1TB to hold movies, photos, and music. If I have the 1TB Seagate plugged in to my MacBook at my designated back-up time, will Time Machine back both the HD and Seagate 1TB to a new (yet-to-be-purchased) 2TB External drive (which will be purchased solely for Time Machine files)?
Yes, as long as both are formatted for a Mac (see #1 in Formatting, Partitioning, Verifying, and Repairing Disks).
The Seagate might have been automatically excluded from backups; if so, it's easily removed, via Time Machine Preferences > Options. If it's listed in the exclusion box +*in black,+* (while it's connected) just select it and click the minus sign at the bottom. If it's listed in gray, it's not formatted properly -- Time Machine can't back it up, and you can't remove it from the exclusion list.
I'm having a difficult time knowing if I'm utilizing Time Machine properly. Since I have a MacBook it doesn't make sense for me to have Time Machine continuously running in the background. So, I only back-up 2 or 3 times a month. And, each time - I seem to get nervous that I'm not doing something correctly.
Time Machine was designed to back up hourly. On a desktop Mac, it's best to let it do just that.
On a laptop, of course, that's rarely practical. But you probably should back up more often -- when your internal HD fails (they all do, sooner or later), or something else awful happens to your Mac, you risk losing everything you've done since the last backup. Think of your Address book, browser bookmarks & history, documents, and especially your media files.
You might want to consider backing-up over your network. It doesn't sound like you also have a desktop Mac, but if you do, you can back up to a "shared" drive on it.
It's a lot more money, but Apple designed the Time Capsule as a combination wireless router and hard drive specifically for Time Machine backups. Most folks do the initial backup while connected via an Ethernet cable, but subsequently Time Machine can do those hourly backups wirelessly, as long as your Mac is awake and in range of the Time Capsule. See http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC344LL/A/Time-Capsule-2TB?fnode=MTY1NDA0Mg&mc o=MTMzNzU2MjI
But as long as you're diligent about doing your backups regularly via an external drive, a TC may not be worth the big bucks, especially if you already have a wireless router.

  • Digital Media Yearbook With InDesign

    Hi all,
I just stumbled upon this community and it looks like I will be frequenting it often
to get answers to my questions and to hopefully answer questions myself.
I'm not looking for tips on how to use InDesign, but rather in ways I can implement it.
Our school is interested in producing a Digital Yearbook and distributing it most like by CD/DVD.
A few months ago our yearbook adviser asked everyone to present a concept idea.
I used InDesign to create a flash file with two sample pages. It had animations and contained
videos, audio, and photo slideshows along with body copy.
The main problem is I don't know how to package the material in an efficient way.
I would really like to package the whole thing in a viewer (controls for zooming in and out and navigation)
but I don't know if that sort of solution exists. Something among the lines
of Adobe Content Viewer for desktop.
Another issue would be file management. When exporting a .swf, Indesign creates a folder with your media. Would that be pratical
to simply burn the .swf file along with the media folder onto a DVD? Or should I opt for something more secure and straightforward? (ie.
you pop in the disc and the .swf file automatically opens)
I know I am covering a lot of ground here, but I would appreciate all the answers I can get.
    Thanks so much!
EDIT: Btw, we are planning on using CS6 Design Standard
    on Mac.

At risk of sounding very old fashioned here, I would seriously question a strategy of producing a digital yearbook on a CD/DVD especially in lieu of a printed volume.
    Why?
A yearbook is the type of product that needs to have longevity. Will CD/DVD media be mainstream ten to fifteen years from now, much less thirty, forty, or fifty years? Will SWF files be commonly displayable at that time?
There were those who advocated such electronic yearbooks back in the mid 1990s in lieu of printed yearbooks. They ended up with Windows 3.1 executable files with proprietary image formats on CDs. Many of the CDs are no longer physically readable and the the Windows 3.1 16-bit executable files are effectively useless.
Something for you to think about ...

  • Xcode with old MacBook

    Hello all,
Wanting to work along some of the countless videos of iOS App tutorials, I have borrowed a friends MacBook that would need an OS upgrade to run a sufficient version of Xcode.  Current specifications are as follows:
MacBook 13" Late 2007 (based on serial number identifier)
2.2Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo processor
    4Gb 667 DDR2 RAM
    25Gb free space
Wanting to run the latest Xcode possible, I will need to first upgrade to Mountain Lion.  Will this be possible with current hardware details?
    Help is much appreciated.
    Regards
    Rob

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
OS X Mountain Lion and Mavericks need a Late 2008 Aluminum or Early 2009 or newer MacBook, so you cannot run the most recent OS X version nor the latest Xcode version. Instead, you can use old Xcode versions, but they are useless if you want to make iOS apps.
There are illegal ways of running OS X Mountain Lion and Mavericks, but they are not allowed and put your Mac in risk.

  • How do I get my lap top to shut down when I close the lid?

I have tried to switch on the function that shuts down my lap top when I close the lid but am either dumb or lazy and gave up too quickly.... any help would be greatly apprecated.

    Thanks Poikkeus
My mac goes to sleep when I close the lid pretty quickly but when I open up the lid it opens up again where I left off.
Some nice person burgled me some time ago and stole my mac so I want to force my mac to close right down so when someone else opens up they are forced to open up in guest.  I can then track my mac without risking them accessing my personal details etc.

  • Clicked on spam link!!!

I did a really silly thing by clicking on a link in what even a short peruse of the email would have told me was part of what I moments later looked up and determined was a
    USPS scam email
I'm actually expecting an important doc in the mail and that prompted me to click before thinking.  I clicked on a link that said it would open a window and allow me to print pertinent info to take to my post office.  Instead, it of course opened a web page and put up a 404 Error instead.
I work on a MacBook Pro with the latest OS x 10.9.2 and have an up to date version of Intego Internet Security.  I've run a complete scan with today's (4/10/14) virus definitions and it finds nothing but is that good enough???
I also have 4 different versions of Windows available to run under VMware (XP, 7, 8 and 8.1).  But those weren't running and I never use mail under those Windows OS's anyway.
The mail client I use on the Mac side is Apple Mail.
I've been hearing these scam emails plan malware that can steal usernames and passwords.
    1.  Is there a name for some certain piece of malware that I should be aware of???  Or are there many and one can't tell which one or ones might be with any particular email??
    2.  Is my Mac at risk??
    3.  Does Intego tell me it find nothing a true sign that the Mac is not infected???  Or no???
    thanks...  Feeling foolish...  bob...

Yes, that's all I did was click on a link.  But more out of curiosity than anything, when I clicked on that link, did it not likely download something, granted maybe an exe file that won't run on the mac, but isn't such a file likely sitting somewhere right now on my mac??
I did a search on exe and it found 9 total, every one of which I know what they are and why they are on my mac.  So does such a file download even if it can't run???  If so, where might it go to hide???  Possible to know or not???
So to say it differently, when you click on a link you shouldn't in an email, you work on a Mac but the malware is intended for a PC what happens with the intended download??? Does it just not happen or what???
    bob..

I was going to check that site; however, since I got a red "not trustworthy" from WOT, I decided not to put my Mac at risk going to a questionable site. I'd recommend not going there; instead, do the right thing: buy the music from a reputable site.

  • Virus Protection using Parallels?

Please excuse me if I have posted this in the wrong area. I am brand new to the world of Mac. I will be running MS XP under Parallels on my new MacBook for a few applications that have no Mac alternatives. I have read quite a bit that virus protection is not really necessary using OS X; my question is this: Will running XP on Parallels make my Mac vulnerable to more viruses? If it makes a difference, this computer will be on a network that has both Mac and PC users. Thanks.

Should you run AV software with Parallels? If you are running Windows in it, absolutely. When running WinXP in Parallels you are running Windows and are at risk for adware and malware.
Is your Mac at risk due to this? It can be but it need not be, that depends on how you use Parallels. Parallels creates a disk image and runs the virtualized installation from that disk image. Think of a big yard with a fenced in section. The yard is your Mac drive and the fenced in section is your Windows installation in Parallels. Without a gate, nothing can get it or out.
Note I said without a gate. Parallels has the option of letting Windows share Mac folders. This is a convenient way to share information between Mac and Windows and it constitutes a gate. I create websites using Mac tools but before uploading them, I need to verify that they look correct in MS Exploder 5, 6, and 7. So I share the WebSites folder I have my user directory with my Parallels WinXP installation allowing me to load my websites in my Windows browsers. That means Windows can read and write to that folder and constitutes a potential danger to my Mac installation.
So, use anti-malware software with Parallels? Yes. Worry that it might cause trouble for your Mac? A little. BTW, many ISP's offer free WIndows software. Check yours out.

  • Is it possible to use internal speakers with the headphones connected?

as the connection of headphones is on the back of the iMac, it would be very useful to be able to switch between the internal speakers and the headphones, without ever having to unplug the headphones from your Mac Is this possible?

Although it still means unplugging I bought one of these though I do use headphones very infrequently:
    http://www.johnlewis.com/belkin-speaker-and-headphone-splitter/p230405301
but at least I don't have to fiddle around the back of the mac and risk,in time, damaging the socket on the mac.
If you decide to purchase one, be careful where you buy from as there are Belkin imitations around ie eBay and indeed Amazon where the quality is suspect particularly if it only costs a couple of £s'. Bought mine from a renowned retailer with genuine Belkin blister pack.
