Is my Video Card Dead or do I have a different problem?

guys.
as of the past week, i've been having massive issues with my display - typically this would happen while running ProTools (in OS9) and at first, i thought it was ProTools causing the issue, but now its happening right after bootup...
essentially, it looks like an old Nintendo game crashed on my computer screen. and sometimes after opening up the computer (or waiting a few minutes) i can boot up with no issue and run the computer for hours with no problems.
i ran the Hardware Test cd (when i was in one of those "no problem" time periods) and it told me the VideoRAM was fine...
here is a picture of the screen i'm getting:
www.burhans-burhans.com/mac.jpg
please let me know what you think. before i spend the money to buy a new Video Card or repair the original (Radeon 9000 64MB) i need to know what the issue is for sure (if possible)
thanks!
andrew

Yes, I looked at the picture and I have not seen that type of pattern before. I have seen cards that were bad/going bad display screen artifacts, some to the point where the image was barely recognizable. My first impressions on seeing yours was either the horizontal sync had failed or that the card had a bad connection.
Apple provided a DVI-to-VGA adapter with the G4's; the other connection is an ADC port. As I recall, the ADC-to-VGA adapters are fairly spendy. You might try borrowing another DVI-to-VGA adapter to rule it out as the problem.
Worst-case scenario is that the card died. Your options there are either:
a) find a used card compatible with the G4's;
b) buy a new Mac card;
c) buy a PC card and flash it
Used cards show up on eBay and typically go for top-dollar ($150 for a used Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Edition is common. OWC has new cards starting around $220. You may note that in my user profile I have a Radeon 9800 Pro in my machine - it's a PC card that I flashed using the instructions from the StrangeDogs Wiki. I bought the card on eBay ($60) and flashed it on my PC - works like a charm and has Core Image support!
Let us know what you find out.

  • Video Card Dead Geforce 4 ti 4600

My Video card died the other night and i was wondering if warrenty will still be valid. i was in the middle of playing return to castle wolfenstein when the computer froze so i had to turn it off. when i tured it on i got nothing but a blank screen. now i have another video card in the computer and it works fine. i took the dead one and put it in another computer with the same result i get a blank screen. now my question about warrenty is i had taken off the heatsink and put new heatsink compound between the chip and heatsink and it was done very professional. i put artic silver 3 between and none of it is near the end of the chip it's all on the metal part of the graphics chip. now when i montored it the temp was lower then before. that was a long time ago. i did that 2 days after  i bought it. now i have been using it for about 5 months. and all of a sudden it died. will i still have warrenty on it. i also have another question if i don't have warrenty can i send it in for repairs because this card cost me $550 dollers when i bought it, and whatever it costs to repair it should cost less then buying one brand new one. if you have any information that could help me on this please e-mail at unknown1337@hotmail and type Dead Geforce as the subject. thankyou in advance

when i try to fill out the rma form in pdf format all the text I write onto it is not saved, i sent the rma department an email with all the required information but not the form, and haven't heard back from that yet.   It has been about 2 days.   Is that a bad sign?  How long does it usually take to get an rma number?

  • Video card dead? Need to get a PC one - flash it if possible, need some hel

Computer is a 13 month old, out of warranty - go figure, Mac Pro.
Okay, last night finished work and fired up WoW and had several crashes, this morning I could not open WoW without getting a video crash right away, just massive screen artifacts and unable to really do anything.
I was able to copy files across the network and get some work stuff on my wife's iMac even when the screen was locked up.
I started backing up a few drives to a central drive, so I could wipe one clean and try a OS reinstal and see if that worked, was able to copy them even when I couldn't access the screen (Watched them populate via the network.)
I took the card out, popped the plastic cover off and cleaned the dust off - there really wasn't much, so I'm not sure what the issue is. I took a can of air and cleaned off the Ram, CPU heat sinks, etc.
Was able to boot in a few more times, usually locking up the screen in 4 or 5 minutes, however now booting into OS X, CD or Bootcamp goes straight to a lockup/you need to reboot screen, I've tried letting the card cool off to see if I could boot in real fast and get some pertinent work files (That worked on a PC w/a overheating card for me before, but I can't get past the lockup now.
I live in Vegas, so called a few apple stores who do not have any replacement cards, looking on ebay they are 2-3 hundred for a 8800GT, ug.
I was going to go to Fry's and pick up a EVGA 8800 GTS, seem to see a lot of how-to-flash posts, etc. claiming that works, and that's a great 'today-fast' around $100.00 solution (Money is VERY tight right now and things are getting worse incrementally w/the Mac dead.)
However - every tutuorial to flash the card gives me step by step how to do it via making a bootcamp partition, and having both cards installed, etc.
I don't seem to have the capability to do it from bootcamp as I can't get past the panic. My wife's got an iMac so no way there, the kids have a mini-hp, bleh.
My bud has a hackintosh I built as a gaming rig last year, I guess my question is, can anyone explain how to patch the card on a PC? Is it even possible or do I need to sell a kidney to get a Mac Pro specific card, flash the Fry's one and then try to recover some of the loss ebaying the Mac card?
Sorry if I'm rambling, really still not 100% sure it's the video card, but praying it is as that's the cheapest fix in these rigs.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer!

See this link for a 4870 card, best instructs for flashing for a noob like me. (last lowest price was $150 for a 1GB vRAM 4870 from TigerDirect).
    http://web.me.com/jacobcroft/4870Flash/4870Flash.html
However, not every 4870 card will work with the ROM currently floating around out there. BEWARE!

  • Help, is my video card dead

It was a bad day and the only bright spot was my new memory arrived.
I shut down the machine, discharged my static with a wrist strap, put in the new memory and put the maching back together and turned it on. Nothing on the screen, it is blank. Arrugh!! - then I took a breath and said "don't panic".
The machine is connected to my network and Hurray, I could reach it and get files etc, just can't see anything.
I have two displays, removed one, swapped to the other port and still nothing. I thing the video card died (sob, sob...hmmm... a christmas present?..an upgrade potential??)
So what do you think: machine is running, two different monitors don't work on either video plug. Time for a replacement?
    Thanks in advance.

  • If you replace a video card... do you have to replace the motherboard too?

so my pre-unibody mbp has a faulty video card. i'm told it needs to be replaced. is it true that having the video card replaced involves replacing the motherboard too?

If I may chime in, if you are a heavy photoshop user-the 13" is already not an option.  15" or 17" depending on your budget. You need the i7 processor and upgrading to 8gb ram wouldnt hurt either.  But dont get the ram from Apple..way overpriced.  See here: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/1333DDR3S08S/. 8gb for $60-cant go wrong with that! And a lifetime guarantee.

  • HT3775 how do you extend the QuickTime player play the videos I want to watch which have a different media format on a MacBook Pro?

I'm tying to watch a video which is on a website to help with my revision.
As I try to open it, it keeps coming up with a message saying the format the clip is in is something the QuickTime player doesn't understand!
How do I overcome this so that I can watch the clip?

Based on what you're saying I'm guessing you don't have the iDVD software. But fear not, there's an alternative to iDVD, called Burn and it's free. So downloadn and install Burn, first. Then from iMovie go to Share Menu > Export Movie... and choose Large size. Save the movie to the Desktop. You'll have a .m4v file that can then be burned to DVD using the Burn software.

  • Msi video card n240gt and n9800gt problems with output HDMI

    Hello to all
I have a problem I just bought a new Video card because I needed HDMI output. The previous card I have is a BFG Ge Force 8800GT 512 DDR2 running @ 1920x1080p 60Hz which works perfectly the only downside is it does not have HDMI out with 5.1. Now i installed the n240GT 512 DDR5 and tried watching BD ripped to the HDD and playing them back  all i get now it jerking lagging bad also and have horizontal red and green lines scattered across the screen.Which i did not have with my 8800GT card thinking  its  a bad card so i bought another card from another dealer this time its a MSI  N9800GT 1gig DDR3 and still the same problem.I Checked the resolution and its set to 1920x1080P refresh at 60Hz,i also changed the  Hz to 24Hz and it cleaned up the lines but not all and picture still  jerky picture. I have a MSI K9N NEO V3 Motherboard and all drivers updated current Bios. l used a DVI cable 40ft long with my Ge Force 8800GT and every thing worked fine, once I installed the new MSI Video cards N240gt and N9800GT I have the above problems and using a 50FT HDMI cable. I have a Samsung PN50A550 with 3 HDMI inputs 1 has my BluRay player hooked up with HDMI running at 1920x1080P at 60Hz and crystal clear picture no problems, input 2 has my HD Bell receiver running at same specs as input 1 no problems I tried the other HDMI inputs from the Samsung TV  from the HDMI out from the card same thing. It has to be the cards that can`t support the TV what else can it be if not the MSI cards. Please respond ASAP Thanks Thumpalong

You may want to borrow and test with another PSU.
We always recommend Corsair and Seasonic
I can't find anything on Topower other than that opinion piece of linked... getting frustrated. Most of the time I can find detailed info on most psu's not this time, so best to borrow and test.
Assuming of course that the older VGA's worked fine.

  • Video Card issues in WinXP - Left 4 Dead

Just wanted to see if anyone was having issues like I'm seeing in these two pics.
This first pics shows what appear to be polygon regions appearing out of no where.
    http://i44.tinypic.com/2v146ep.jpg
And this 2nd pic shows spikes that appear mostly out of characters but on some objects as well.
    http://i44.tinypic.com/vqhafk.jpg
Usually when I start playing everything is fine but after a 20min or so they will start to appear. Changing some video settings in the game (such as anti-aliasing or resolution) will usually make them disappear for a few minutes but they will then re-appear. My best guess is that this is due to the video card overheating as it doesn't happen right away, but that's just a guess. I tried installing 'speedfan' to increase the fan speed but it does not seem able to control the speed on the video card.
Also, I only have the drivers that have come with the bootcamp installation. On the forums it seems that it is recommended not to install other versions of the drivers so I have not at this point.
I'm running bootcamp (windows xp 32bit) on my MacPro 10.5.5 / 4GB ram (quad core Xenon) with the ATI-X1900. I have the latest 2.1 bootcamp installed. The game runs perfectly beyond these issues, although I do get the occasional stutter or audio repeat.
I don't have any of these issues on TF2.
Does anyone have any suggestions on a possible solution? or does anyone know of a way to control the fan speeds in Windows? In OSX I use smcFanControl to keep the machine a little cooler.
PS. I also heard that some of the ATI-X1900 cards had issues. Can anyone confirm this? If this is the case, can anyone recommend another card for my MacPro? I do occasionally get video card issues in OSX too while doing 3d work.
    Thanks for any help!

Upon inspection of the card it is totally loaded with dust. I found this article:
    http://macsaregreat.com/?p=63
which has some pics and this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1265166&start=0&tstart=0
which discusses many issues as well with the X1900 and Leopard. I first started seeing issues with the card during my 3d work after I installed Leopard.
I'm off to the computer store to pick up some compressed air to try to clean that vent now. I already use smcFanControl already, before using it I was getting card errors every day.
Thanks again for the info regarding the dust on that card.

  • Thinkpad w510 video card died?

    Hi
    1. So i own W510. Some days ago video card stopped working in the middle of watching streaming video. It works fine in safe mode but when i use video driver it crashes right on login to windows. I was using windows 8. Also if i deinstall drivers - it works just fine.
I tried clean install of windows 7. Fan and heatsink are totally clean. BIOS is latest, since months ago.
I tried lenovo drivers on both of the systems. I tried removing each of the 4 ram modules. Tried memtest. I also tried nvidia current, beta and also older nvidia drivers on both systems. I'm a computer tech so i'm pretty sure i tried to isolate every possible software issue... It just crashes with nvidia related BSOD. Is my video card dead? I had that overheating problem of GPU reaching ~85 degrees during work sometimes, like in some other threads i've seen on this forum...
    2. My warranty expired some months ago. I want to buy an extension warranty. Website says "There are currently no Service Offerings for this system.". I live in israel and when i call IBM israel - they give me number of lenovo israel. I call lenovo - nobody picks up. Please advice? I'm panicking, its way too expensive laptop just to "die"
    Thanks!
[update] After the computer way lying away for a couple of days - i was able to boot it and everything works. Its sort of not normal, i have to get it checked. My second question about extended warranty still applies. And would be really nice to hear some thoughts about the video issue.
[post update] It just crashed again with the same issue after like 5-10 minutes of working. Maybe its related to it heating up and a PCB loses some contact or something. video_tdr_failure nvlddmkm.sys BSOD. And now again, after half an hour of being off it was able to start. After 5-10 minutes of being on it hanged, flashed and then showed a "Video driver succesfully recovered" message. Definetely seems like video card or video ram dying. And after some minutes it flashed the same message again twice and after a moment went into the same BSOD.

Yes that's how it looks like. Trying to get ahold of some local place/service center to get a warranty extension.
Any idea how much would it cost without a warranty?
Its i7 extreme cpu, temps get to 80-90c under loads

  • Video Card upgrade for HP Pavilion HPE h8-1256s Desktop

I wanted to upgrade my current graphics card which was an NVIDIA GeForce GT 620, the mother board is a H-Joshua-H61-uATX. I recently bought an EVGA GeForce GTX 750Ti Superclock. I unistalled the old drivers took out the old card, added the new one and when I started up my PC i would recive 3 beeps and a black screen. I did some research and found out that it may be due to the BIOS. There is no BIOS upgrade I can find and my BIOS vers is AMI 7.11, 4/28/2012. I would appreciate a list or a recommendation of compatable Video cards so I do not have to keep buying and installing these devices or if there is a new BIOS update.

    Hi,
The EVGA 750 will not work with a version 7 BIOS.  Look under Windows 8 for BIOS version 8.19.

  • New Video Card options

I have a first generation MacPro with the ATI Radeon X1900 and I have been experiencing some issues. First, my computer has been making a lot of noise from a fan, and I have read in several places that this has often been the ATI video cards. Also, recently I have been experiencing some issues with rendering in my applications. I play World of Warcraft, and lately when it rains in the game, it starts looking fuzzy. It could be a problem with the software, but with the fan issue I am more inclined to just replace the card and hopefully fix both issues.
About two months ago the signal from my Mac to my monitor gave out entirely. When that happened, I called the Apple Store and they told me any PCI-Express video card would be compatible, so I picked up an Nvidea GeForce 8800 GT. It did not fix the problem and I brought it into the Apple Store and they determined it was the video controller on the motherboard that caused the issue. However, they were not able to get the Nvidea card to work with my computer, so I just went back to the ATI card after that.
So, after all that, my question is what Video cards are compatible with the first generation Mac Pro on OS X version 10.4.11, and are there extra steps I have to do to get the hardware to work? Are there drivers or software I need to download before swapping out the cards?
    Thank you,
    Tim

    Your choices are:
X1900 for $399 if you stay with 10.4.11
    Radeon 3870 requires 10.5.4 retail $215
8800GT requires 10.5.3 direct from Nvidia or Apple, two models, one for EFI64 (2008) and the one you want for 2006/7 EFI32 models.

  • Aperture Won't Launch With 2 Video Cards

I use 3 monitors with my G5 Dual 2.5GHz for running a number of programs simultaneously and also for Final Cut Pro editing. In the center is an Apple 23" HD Cinema Display. On the left is an Apple 15" DVI flat screen and on the right is an Apple 15" VGA flat screen.
Aperture will not launch at all. It gives me an error stating that the video card is not supported. The main card is a GeForce 6800 GT DDR that has the 23" and the 15" DVI connected. The problem is the Radeon 7000 that has the 15" VGA hooked up. I took the Radeon out and Aperture ran fine so I know where the problem lies.
Obviously I cannot keep taking the Radeon in an out of the G5 whenever I want to use different programs. Does anyone have any suggestions? I hope Apple will have an update where you can tell Aperture what monitors to use or video card to ignore. That should alleviate the problem. Is there a way of using Terminal to turn off the Radeon which would allow Aperture to run? I just bought this program and was all excited to start using it. Now I'm bummed. Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Power Mac G5 Dual 2.5GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Maybe there is a way to turn the Radeon 7000 on and off through Terminal? Some process I can quit to run Aperture on the 2 monitors connected to the nVidia GeForce 6800GT and then restart that process when I'm done so I can go back to using 3 monitors?
    Thanks.

i wanted to upgrade the video card? is this possible? also different people tell me i can upgrade to 2 gigs but others say 4g on the laptop? i also wanted to put windows xp professional on it and not use the windows 7 starter....if anyone has a bit if information please help

    Hi:
2 GB is max on your notebook.
Here is the processor spec direct from Intel. Note the max memory size is 2 GB.
    http://ark.intel.com/products/42503/Intel-Atom-Processor-N450-(512K-Cache-1_66-GHz)
You cannot upgrade the video adapter. It is soldered to the motherboard.
There is only one system board, so there isn't even another motherboard available with better video.
In order to install XP you need to slipstream the SATA AHCI driver.
Read this helpful guide below. Read the Intel section. Then use the guide to slipstream all of the drivers.
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-Systems-and/SATA-drivers-for-XP-solution-on-0x000000...
And being the nice guy that I am, I have attached the drivers you need to slipstream to get XP installed.

Sorry for the long copy and paste. I read that I can upgrade the video card and power supply. But atm when I play world of warcraft at ultra settings, I tend to lag really bad in the new instances with the new cat expansion that came out. I wanted to know if I should upgrade the video card and power supply for better performance or just upgrade my whole pc tower.  Fyi, I am running a Acer X243w lcd flat panel monitor if that helps too.

My brother has a high end laptop with a built in, high end gaming video card (I forget which one). He's able to run the game on full-on Ultra.
I have an integrated video card which games the game on.. 'cartoon'.. mode. It's lower then low. When someone shoots a powerful spell at me, I go into a DOS Prompt. (not really, but it's pretty bad).
Funny thing is, I can still kick my brother's butt in any PVP match he wants to set up.
But I guess his graphics are pretty....
As for which video card works best, I'd have to do some research. After that graphics update they did with CAT,  it's kind of a toss up again.

  • What video card should I purchase for old iMac?

I have an old Mac 24 inch, and it seems that the video card is not working. How do I find which video card to purchase? I have a serial number.

You could take a look into an appropriate repair guide to see what is shown for your model build identifier version of iMac (intel) with a 24-inch display; there were at least three models with that size display. Not a single one, was of PowerPC architecture.
