Is OS X server operate in a Windows environment?

We have an office of about 30 people strong, plus some remote sites (approximately 5-6).
Can the OS X Server be used as a replacement of Windows 2003 Server?  We do not use Domain, just Workgroup.
We require certain user privileges with respect to which folders are accessible to which users.
DHCP could be from the Router (could be a Time Capsule) but how about DNS settings?
How about the HD formatting, should be formatted as NFPS, or does Journaled work in Windows?
Generally, i am looking for advice on how to set up an OS X server at work, provided it is possible to use it as a replacement of Windows Server.
I already have a 2010 iMac with 8GB of RAM and 500GB HD, which i can use as an OS X server computer.  Or i could buy a new Mac Mini for this task.
Thanks in advance,
Paris

Hello Paristea,
I hope someone else will reply much better than me, i'll just do a smart part in case your question goes unnoticed like it sometime happens.
In general, OS X server does not replace Windows server. Apple Server is a Small Business or Home Server now.
With all your people and sites, even if you are all Apple, even if you work low profile with only files sharing, the investment on the switch and learning how to hack this "appears to me" to be bigger than adding an Apple server and taking Windows server up to 2008 R2 or more.
Actually, I like to have Windows server do the basic things it can, serve Windows and Macs in terms of DHCP, DNS, Certificates, Time, Network Accounts, printer and file sharing.
For me, the questions remains as which should do the collaboration services, Wiki, Blog, Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Messages.
If collaboration services are done in the cloud with Microsoft, Google, Yahoo or else, there might not even be a reason to add an Apple Server except for Time Machine maybe....

• I am trying to remote into a Windows Server 2003 from a Windows 7 machine and having issues

I am trying to remote into a Windows Server 2003 from a Windows 7 machine.  It says "The terminal server has exceeded the maximum number of allowed connections".
My first stop in trying to solve this problem was here:
howtogeek.com
And it says:

This problem happens because Windows only allows two remote terminal services connections when you are in administrative mode, and you’ve either got two people already on that server, or more likely, you’ve got a disconnected session that still thinks
it is active.
The problem with this error is that you have to actually get on the server console to fix the problem if the server isn’t in a domain. (If you are in a domain, then just open Terminal Services Manager and log off or disconnect the sessions)

So it seems to suggest that all I have to do really is to run the  Terminal Services Manager but I cannot find it.
This web site from mssqltips.com (click here) says all I need to do is first execute "mstsc /
admin" from the command line.  But, when I do that, I get a message when I try to remote to the server, that says this: "To log on to this remote console session, you must have administrative permissions on this computer".
So, what now?  What do you suggest?

Hi Bobby,
Yes, it is by design. By default, Windows Server only accepts two concurrent administrative sessions (Administrative Mode). It means that only two administrators can work on the server at
the same time.
If you would like more concurrent sessions, you need to purchase RDS CALs, install Terminal Services related server roles with proper configurations on the server.

2. windows firewall is configured to allow java and glassfish processes
3. glassfish domain.xml is configured for the 64-bit jvm .
Please, can anybody help to resolve the issue?

Hi all,
Found the exact root cause:
Old installation of Avast firewall.
on my laptop I used Avast internet security and then removed it sometime ago. But some avast entries in registry were still left and also there was a windows service for Avast.
I found this out because I have a win 7 32-bit netbook where I was got same exception (Unable to establish loopback connection) yesterday when i tried to start glassfish.
So i deleted all avast registry entries and removed the avast service, then I could start the Glassfish server successfully.
So no surprise why it worked on my new Win 7 installation on original laptop as it was a clean format n reinstall.

• Windows Server 2008 r2 as Windows XP Pro 2.0 (Issue: 1)

Windows Server 2008 r2 as Windows XP Pro 2.0 (Issue: 1)
Flabbergasted at the sheer level of idiocy required to use Windows 7 Ultimate or Windows 8.1 Pro I remain a stead fast winXPro user to this day (mid-2014) and beyond. My i3-3225 XP machine turns 2000+ Passmark system scores and excels at everything the
way we all use to, before Microsoft's policy of operating systems built for idiots, by idiots came to pass. Then as a sheer act of desperation I tried Server 2008 r2... is it the OS I have dreamed of? Short of an XP Theme conversion kit I have questions...
Problem 1) Windows Explorer: In the folder directory left pane... the little [+] box next to the folder names flash on and off each time I use the right window pane. Can I by any and all means make them not do this, remain visible, sit still; like XP used
to do?
Problem 2) Start Menu: This popup is a double wide window pane, two columns of annoyance. Can I reduce this to a single wide by removing the right pane entirely by any and all means. I have removed every button from the right pane, but it still exists, it still
has a default picture user icon and says Administrator.
Problem 3) If specific programs/drivers are unavailable for this OS 2008 r2, I presume win 7 x64 by default work.
Problem 4) Passmark benchmarking software tested my system, with windows 8.1 I had a processor score of 9,400, but server 2008 r2 put out only 8,100 in repetitive tests. Why the slowdown? I only use this as an XP like os, no actual server stuff, should i disable
something?

Windows Server is not intended to replace Windows XP. i would advice to try Windows 7 or 8 instead.
1) I cannot picture what you mean. ther is a setting to define wheter the left pane should follow if you browse in the right one. Tools- folder options- general 'navigation pane'
2)Windows vista/2008 is the last version that had a (optional) single pane start menu. if you don't like the current one, ther is third party software available to replace the start menu
3) yes, these will be ok
4) 2008 R2 is a server OS and is out-of-the bow not optimized for foreground applications. Windows 8.1 on the other hand is a newer and more performant OS optimized for client usage. in both cases a lot of performance gain is to be expected by selecting
the right drivers, disabling or unisntalling unneeded software and windows features, disabling unneeded services. I would recommend to (a least) go to computer properties -advanced settigns- advanced and set 'adjust for best perfomance of" to programs (instead
of background services)

• SQL Server Express compatibility with Windows 8.1 - Which version(s) are compatible?

We have purchased a new computer that has Win 8.1 Pro. We are migrating an application from a Win 7 Pro machine we are currently successfully using (the vendor migrates it for us) and they have said that the application will require the installation of SQL
Server 2008 Express (which we do have on our Win 7 machine).
In looking at the requirements for SQL Server 2008 Express (on the download page for it), it does not mention it being compatible with Win 8.1
In addition, Installation Instructions  says that it requires:
     Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5 SP1
     Windows Installer 4.5.
     Windows PowerShell 1.0
I see that 3.5 is already listed as a program feature of Win8.1 and I've enabled it. Do I need to install SP1? I downloaded it, and launched it, and nothing happened.
I also looked at the Windows Installer 4.5 download page, and it's not clear if that is compatible with 8.1. Do I need to download and install it?
Power Shell 2.0 is already installed. I assume that will be backwards compatible with PowerShell 1.0; is that correct?
I saw another question about SQL Server Express Compatibility with Win 8.1 (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/038ec00e-4fc1-41ba-9fdc-21c022aad67e/action?threadDisplayName=sql-server-express-compatibility-with-windows-81) and the response
said that SQL Server Express 2012 will work, but the link contained in the answer led to a page for SQL Server Express 2014.
My vendor has told me that SQL SERver Express 2012 will be backwards compatible with their product. But they said that I would first have to install 2008 first. Is that correct for Win 8.1?
So, the ultimate questions are:
1. What is the link for Sql Server 2012 Express for Win 8.1?
2. Will the SQL Server 2012 Express download require prior install of the 2008 version
3. What other component requirements are required for SQL Server 2012 Express, and how can I determine if they have already been installed. (This is a brand new computer with a clean Win8.1 Install).
4. Finally, can we use the 2014 version of SQL Server Express for Win 8.1? If so, questions 1, 2 and 3 apply, too.
Thanks for your help on this!! HIGH ANXIETY.

Hello,
The following article provides which updates are required to make SQL Server versions compatible with Windows 8 or 8.1:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2681562/en-us
1. You can use the product updates feature on SQL Server 2012 to make it compatible with Window 8.1. Apply SP1 as described on the following
article:
http://www.sqlcoffee.com/SQLServer2012_0008.htm
2. No.
3. Download and install .NET Framework 4.0 and enable .NET Framework 3.5. For more information:
http://www.sqlcoffee.com/SQLServer2012_0017.htm
4. Yes, you can use SQL Server 2014 with Windows 8.1. Please refer to the Support article provided above.

Unable to install Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 8 Release Preview on RTM 8 Enterprise
Standalone installer available here
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=28972
fails with error code 0x80004005
Is this because my installation has issues, or would the admin pack files be updated for RTM?
Thank you in advance for any insight

Found the solution here:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w8itprogeneral/thread/6d8745e0-c4c1-463a-b4bb-09f6c9c22527
Workaround:
Download the RSAT package intended for Windows 8 Release Preview: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=28972
Extract the .msu file with a tool such as 7-Zip.
Open an Admin command prompt and change directory to where you extracted the .msu.
Run the following command to install (if x86 you probably have a different .xml filename): pkgmgr /n:Windows6.2-KB2693643-x64.xml
Wait a while. You can look in task manager for pkgmgr. When it disappears, the installation is done.
Use the tools as per usual.

• Migration from Small business server 2011 standad to Windows 2012 Server Standard

Hi everyone,
I have a network with SBS 2011 standard (that is the only server) and now we are moving (migrating) to windows 2012 server standard with an exchange 2013 (not yet installed).
The main thing is that when trying to install the migration tool on the SBS server, it will not install because it is not a 2008 R2 server.
is there a workaround for this problem?
I Hope this will help. Amir Ovadia

Hi,
Would you please first let me know how did you perform the migration? Regarding the migration tool, is it the Windows Server Migration Tools in Windows Server 2012 R2? Since you need to install
the Windows Server Migration Tools on the source SBS 2011 server, I suggest we could perform the following steps to install it.
Create deployment folders for ource computers by running the
smigdeploy.exe tool (included with Windows Server Migration Tools) on your destination server.
Register Windows Server Migration Tools on source computers that are running Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008, or Windows
Server 2003 by using SmigDeploy.exe.
For details, please refer to the following article.

• How to upgrade Windows Server 2008 Foundation to Windows Server 2008 Standard

I have a Dell server with Windows Server 2008 Foundation installed. I am now on a larger network which has their own servers for authentication and the Windows Server 2008 Foundation will not let join a domain with more than 15 users. I was told that I needed

According to the first one you can perform an in-place upgrade.

• Weblogic Server 6.1 as Windows NT Service

Hi All,
I am running Weblogic Server 6.1 as Windows NT Service with one WAR
Application Deployed in Production Mode.
My machine is on Windows 2000 Application Server. I am facing a very strange
problem with the setup.
Prob 1 :
Sometimes the service unexpactedly terminates ( I ve got the log in
Event Viewer of Win2K saying that myserver service has been terminated 2
times....) !! Can anyone explain why it is terminating like these ? what
could be the possible reasons ?
Prob 2 :
When i see the logs that are generated i found that the WAR Application
is continuously getting re-deployed and I am getting Deployment Exceptions
for the same WAR files that i couldnt be deployed. This is happening
automatically , I am not re-deploying the app.
What could be the possible reasons ? Can anyone explain this behaviour ?
Thanks in Advance.

Hello Bhavin,
Are you sure you are running in production mode? Because production vs
development mode is controlled by a parameter in startWebLogic. However,
startWebLogic doesn't matter when you run it as a service. The startup
parameters are set in installNTService, from where they go directly in the
Windows registry.
We found out that it matters what the timestamp of the packaged file is,
compared to the time WebLogic started. For us, when the timestamp of our
.ear file is earlier than the time WebLogic started, it does not want to
redeploy. Maybe your timestamp is in the future or something??
There are two reasons why you will see "service terminated unexpectedly".
(a) If you stop the server yourself from the admin console or through the
command line, the beasvc process exits, but Windows doesn't expect that, so
it complains. Windows will not complain if you stop the service through "net
stop <service>".
However, there is reason (b), when the beasvc.exe process crashes by itself.
We occasionally experience that (WebLogic 6.1 sp1) and we don't know why
either. The only clue is in the weblogic.log file, where the last entry was
something like: NT Performance Pack, I/O error, FD 3456.
If you solve your #1, I would love to hear about it.

Hi Kumar,
Thanks for the reply.
Well, the size of WAR is not very big, but that needs many other jars inthe
classpath to get executed.
I suppose the prob # 2 can be solved by Disabling Auto Deployment of
Applications from Console > Mydomain > Application and uncheck thecheckbox
but I am not sure.
But what is wrong exactly with the setup ? This works perfactly alrightwhen
Weblogic is not running as Windows Service.
can web.xml and weblogic.xml or config.xml be helpful to you in
understanding the problem ?
Thanks in advance.

Basically use for internal web server only. I'm not sure can I use Oracle weblogic 11g instead of OracleAS 10g R2. I'll use some of the components like Oracle HTTP Server, Oracle Application Server Containers for J2EE(OC4J), Reports Services, Forms Services, Metadata Repository for Oracle Application Server Middle-Tier and etc.
