Is possible to set you MAC address on a zone?

Hello,
On our Solaris 10 servers we have shared NIC interfaces. We have a program that is having issues talking to the all zones because they have the same MAC address.
Is there a way with zonecfg or ifconfig to change the MAC on the zones?
Other wise we need to rewire the servers and I don't know if we have enough NICs for all the zones.

Shared stack does not allow the MAC address to be changed per zone. As someone else suggested, Solaris 11 greatly improves things because a single physical NIC can be used for multiple exclusive stack zones.
You may want to consider running Solaris 11 on these servers. If some or all of your zones need to continue to be on Solaris 10, you could then use Oracle Solaris 10 Zones (i.e. solaris10 branded zones) on Solaris 11. If you have a box running Solaris 11, you can try out Solaris 10 Zones with:
pkg install brand-solaris10
zonecfg -z s10zone 'create; set zonepath=/zones/s10zone'
zoneadm -z s10zone install -p -a /path/to/archive

The configuration that results from the zonecfg command above uses exclusive stack with one anet resource. The anet resource allows you to change the MAC address, limit which IP address(es) are used by the dedicated stack, automatically configure the IP address, etc.
Note that Solaris 11.1 just came out. If you are installing Solaris 11 for the first time, best to start with Solaris 11.1. If you have Solaris 11.0 (aka Solaris 11 11/11) I'd suggest updating to at least 11.0 SRU2 before doing a lot with zones.

You are supposed to be able to select "Local" in addition to "Not Enabled", "Timed Access" and "RADIUS". Using Local will enable you to set which MAC addresses have access to your Time Capsule, but for the life of me I couldn't find the Local option...

Now, none of the machines can connect to the access point. That includes the PC I use to log in and administer the access point. I connected the network cable directly to my PC to manage the router/access point. Still not able to connect. What happened? How do I get back in and turn that nonsense off. I know MAC Filtering is questionable wrt effectiveness, but I decide to try it.

Possible to import new mac address vendor code translation list in WCS 6?

Is it possible to import new (IEEE) vendor code list to get correct information regarding clients MAC-addresses? There are too many client vendor codes reported as "Unknown" lately......

What is the mac address of the vendor OUI? Every new release of WCS contains the latest MAC vendor OUI so upgrading to WCS 7.0.164.3 should update the vendor's info.
If its a new device, please post the mac address, device, and vendor.

Setting up .mac addresses in iWeb sites

My .mac site (www.chaibabyusa.com) has been setup and published on iWeb '08 in .Mac.
I would like to have email addresses setup ([email protected]) so that an email could be forwarded to an external site (@gail.com, for example).

I spoke to the internet provider (1&1) and they told me that since the website wasa forwarded cname, the email was similarly forwarded. is this not the case?

Setting MAC-address on wireless Intel 2200 BG card

I have a wireless Intel 2200 BG card in my laptop. I have installed the ipw2200-package, and it appears to be working. The module ipw2200 loads just fine and iwconfig gives me this:

However, i have not been able to set the MAC-address. I am at my parrents house, and their ISP have enabled a MAC-filter on the wireless router. So i can't access the router with my wireless card.
if i do a "ifconfig eth1", i can see that the MAC-address of the card is 00:0E:35:FE:2D:1A
Then i do:
ifconfig eth1 hw ether 00:50:BF:9C:D7:A5
I do not get any error-messages, but when i do a "ifconfig eth1", the MAC-address is still 00:0E:35:FE:2D:1A
Any suggestions on how i can set the MAC-address of my card?

It isn't my router, it is owned by our ISP. They might give me the username/password if i ask, but i thought setting the MAC-address on my card would be an easy thing to do. I have done it on my wired ethernet card, so i am using that one right now. But wireless would be more fun.

Here are some reasons a person may want to change their MAC address. None of them sound like legitimately valid reasons.

To get past MAC address filtering on a router. Valid MAC      addresses can be found by sniffing them and then the deviant user could      assume the MAC of a valid host. Having two hosts on the same network can cause some network stability problems,      but much of the time it's workable. Hello, i was just wondering, is there a way to tell what mac address will be asigned to a specific ip? like what ip goes with which mac address for your isp.

I can try to answer your question even though...it's a bit odd.
1. Every network device has its own MAC address.
2. ISP only cares (usually for residential) about a single MAC address, which is the modem. Pretty much any modem can be access to find it's MAC address.
3. Some IPs, like Comcast, are set to a PCs specific MAC address for connectivity. Meaning, they know your modem, then they'll lock down to your PCs MAC address. You can find that, if Windows, Start > Run >> type cmd, Dos window appears >> type ipconfig/all <-- This will give you MAC address at Physical address (the network card of your PC.
In this manner, the ISP assigns IP address to you (client) via your PCs MAC address. This is what would be known as the WAN side.
It is different on the LAN side. Some modems can act as routers, or a separate router is installed downstream of the modem. The router in this case handles all IP address for all connected network devices. These are termed to be the private network aka LAN (interchangeable terms).
The router is used then to set an IP address to each network device via their MAC address. This is one way to do it.
It's also possible to assign an IP address by telling a PC to USE a specifc IP address.

Hi Bruce,
Out from what I can find on this network card is it not possible to get the mac address without a OS. I would recommend you to get/burn a Linux/Ubuntu live CD/DVD and run a Ifconfig in there.

Add MAC Address to Time Capsule?

Hey everybody--
I have a MacBook Pro that connects to the Internet via a Time Capsule that is hooked up to a cable modem. I recently bought a Blu-Ray player that has a LAN port (no wireless), but it is miles away from the Time Capsule.
I would like to share my MacBook Pro's wireless Internet connection by connecting an ethernet cable between the Blu-Ray player and the MacBook Pro. I turned on Internet Sharing and selected share Airport with computers using ethernet. I tested it out by seeing if my wife's MacBook could share the connection and it worked like a charm. (I turned off her Airport card and her computer accessed the Internet via an ethernet cable between our two computers.)
Alas, the Blu-Ray player can't seem to share the connection.
The Blu-Ray player uses DHCP but tt appears to receive a self-assigned IP address.
The player manual says that if the connection fails "it may be necessary to set the MAC address of the unit at the router side."
Does anyone know what this statement could mean? Can I add a device somehow to the Time Capsule. Any other thoughts on ways to make this work?

I found this how-to on the Web. I'm not too saavy with terminal, so these things always make me a bit nervous. Anyone have any concerns about following these steps to see if it works?
The following procedure is confirmed to work as written.
Start Internet Sharing if it's not already running.
In Terminal, type cp /etc/bootpd.plist /tmp/bootpd.plist
Stop Internet Sharing.
Open /tmp/bootpd.plist for editing using TextEdit or whatever.
Locate this section of the file, near the end:
<key>replythresholdseconds</key>
<integer>4</integer>
Change the value 4 to 0.
In Terminal, type sudo cp /tmp/bootpd.plist /etc
Start Internet Sharing.
If you want to, check that your change to /etc/bootpd.plist hasn't been reverted.

It seems that if these settings are not possible, there can be no spontaneity with iChat. You have to pre-arrange a video chat by email or whatever, in which case you are not adding much once you have arranged the call--you may as well carry on with the email or whatever other contact method you use.
Or is there some other way to arrange video chat?

No, neither of these are possible. When your Mac is asleep it does not remain connected to anything on the 'net.

The only way you could do it is to leave your Mac on and iChat connected at all times. You could then set your display to switch off after a certain amount of time.
That way your Mac will remain connected via iChat and you'll be able to receive video chats at any time. In fact i believe an incoming call via iChat will even switch the display back on (though i haven't tested this myself).

Sorry to hear about your trouble. Unfortunately, the only way to get the MAC address is to run a query on the unit (physically or or remotely). Using the serial number to query information on the system will list the devices that are included on the unit (this doesn't include the MAC address).
