Is rendering faster on Intel machines

I was curious if there's any benefit to purchasing an Intel Mac in order to speed up rendering? Our office is going to be doing more video work this year, and our Dual G5 takes many hours to render projects. Would an Intel machine with a comparable number of processors render faster?

Our Mac pro Quad 2.66 is much faster (at leat a third) than our Dual G5 2.7s, but twice as many processors.

  • PowerMac faster than intel Mac when running video programs?

Hello everyone! Having a question now so wonder if any of you have the same experience?
Recently i have many video works to do. I have a powerbook, which is the lasted 17inch powerbook and an intel imac (early 2008, 2.66GHz). I run the same version of finalcut pro and compressor. But thing become very strange, which is that when i run compressor to make final video files, my powerbook is much faster (about 2 times faster) than intel iMac. When i run XDCAM program to import video clips to finalcut from Sony XDCAM blueray reader, powerbook is also much more faster than intel iMac, and which is about 10time more faster than intel iMac. So it become very strange. I list my configurations below, and any of you can help me to solve the 'problem' or explain the strange fenominal.
Maybe theres anything wrong with software configurations, any one can also help me with that?
    Thank you very much!

    HDD: Cosair 256GB SSD
System: Mac OS X Lion 10.7 (tried also on Snow Leopard)
Program: Final Cut Studio 2 (tried also Final Cut Studio 3 on friends imac with the same configuration)

Of course it depends on what you're doing and how well you know how to use available resources... the general rule for Logic is:
    >>>Fastest machine with the most RAM you can afford.<<<
That said, someone who knows what they're doing can get an amazing amount of effects and virtual instruments on an old PPC G5 computer running Logic 8.
So, while fast machines will allow more plugins/VI with less overloads... knowing what you're doing will take you further so that the difference between machines would not make a difference in the music.

    IS THE SITUATION HOPELESS
I used Target mode to transfer files to a new i7  iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 from an older Dual core Intel machine (EMC 2105) also on 10.6.8. but originally Tiger 10.4. The operation was successful and I ejected the disk icon from the new machine and powered down the old machine. When this was restarted the next day there was a grey screen with flashing Mac symbol alternating with a 'no entry' sign and occasionally a question mark.Keyboard and mouse were unusable so k inserted the original instal disc (No.1 for 10.4. with installer 1.0.4) which came with the machine in 2006 in an attempt to boot from this. The ensuing window said this was not possible and now it cannot be ejected.I have tried everything ! It offers Disk Utility and other options like Terminal but that doesn't work either.I 'repaired disk' and that was pronounced o.k. None of the various keystrokes at start up will work, and the computer will only offer the installer disc continually. The only option would seem to be is to erase the hard drive completely from the disc in the machine.I don't want to do this as there is still material which I need to recover. I think the drive has in some way been corrupted by using it in target mode, and I don't know if there are any other options to try.
Please tell me how to get this disc to eject !

Have you seen this type of problem before? I think it could be a serious issue for anyone in a similar position.
No; but then, I've not had occasion to use TDM. I've been using firerwire drives for over 10 years, both FW400 and FW800, with no issues except a bit of instability using a B&W G3 machine.
TDM should be safe. Using cautious, manual copying of files from the Target machine to the Host machine should not result in unexpected loss of files or damage to the Target drive's directories. It should behave exactly the same as if it were an external (to the Host) firewire drive.
    •  I don't suppose there is anything I can do to 'put back' lost items from a separate Time Machine drive which has an up to date backup on it.
There is probably a way to do that - seems to me that's one of the reasons for a Time Machine volume.
On the other hand, if the Time Machine volume is rigidly linked to the now-absent OS on the original drive, there may be no way to effectively access the files in the TM archive.
I know that using a cloned drive would work well in this instance.
I have no experience with Time Machine, so perhaps someone who has will chime in with suggestions.
With the machine in TDM with the other machine, have you tried running Disk Utility to see if you can effect repairs to the drive?

  • System Image Utility - universal_boot option only on Intel machines

I'm using System Image Utility on 1.8 GHz PowerPC G5 running Mac OS X Server version 10.5.2. When I try to create a NetBoot image with the standard settings (no customization) and a Mac OS X 10.5 Install DVD, I get the following message:

  • Can't view WMP files in Safari on Intel machine unless in Rosetta??

I am trying to set up my parent's new Mac Mini w/ a core Solo Intel chip. They want to be able to view videos on CNN, but the only way i've been able to get them to work is by downloading the WM9 player, then launching Safari under Rosetta, which is noticably slower than if it were running natively. Is there any other way to get streamed WMP files to work on an Intel machine using Safari? Should I just get Firefox set up on their comp. for compatibility?

    Hi,
Windows Media Player and Flip4Mac are both PowerPC only at the moment, so yes you'll have to use Rosetta for the time being.
Windows Media Player never will be available for the Mac Intel platform (Microsoft no longer develop it) but Flip4Mac are working on porting their plugin 'sometime soon'.

  • Will logic express 6 install/work on an intel machine?

don't need it to work, just install, so I can then install the Logic Pro 7.2 upgrade overtop of it. Any thoughts or ideas?

    Hi,
The Logic Pro 7.2 update will only install on an existing Logic Pro 7 program.
You will have to first upgrade from Logic 6 to Logic 7, and THEN update to 7.2
    Cheers
PS Logic 6 will not run properly on an Intel Machine.

  • Can I change my 2005 G5 from a PowerPC to an Intel machine?

Is there a method or means whereby I can convert my PowerPC G5 into an intel machine?  So much software, but not for my architecture.
    Kevin

I do not think so, the only modification I have ever heard of like that was for the 2009 Mac Pros being converted to the capabilities of a 2010 Mac Pro. Sorry.
Does anyone else know for sure?

  • A PPC Motion user tries out the Intel machines

    Hi Guys,
Ive been seriously thinking about the intel,octo,3.0 Ghz machne as an upgrade to my current config of two PPC G5-quad, 16 gigs of ram-X1900, bla, bla, bla.
Recently I had a chance to work on 2 of those Intel machines... extensively. After several days of beating those things to death and running M3 thru the ringers this is what i came up with.
    Stability:
I find that the PPC quad was far more stable than the intels running M3, In fact I found constant stalls,, crashes, and tons of little bugs depending on what your doing.
    Real time playback.
Realtime playback kicked *** until I through a few layers of text at them. One project had over 90 layers w/ behaviors and stuff. and that really killed it.. actually that would kill most.
The intel machines ran cooler, and when it came to compressing tons of content it was awesome!
However, After nearly two days of trouble shooting machines, crashes, command delays and that kind of thing I was forced to take my work home to work on the PPC machines which yield a more constant, far less frustrating effortless workflow. Quick example: What took me nearly six hours to try and complete, took 4 hours delivered to client. because of the stability.
So, as bad as I want a few new Octo's stuffed with everything you can put in the thing... I think Im gonna wait for the next round of desktops. Maybe by then the marriage of software and hardware will actually meet somewhere in the middle for a less frustrating experience.
    Nava

If it works......it works! There's no need to do spending where not necessary... I wish somebody told me that when I was attending art school... -_-

  • NetInstall dosen't work for intel machines

When booting the machines in my lab while holding down the OPTION key, only the G5 and earlier machines are giving me the icon for NetInstall. NetInstall works great on the G5 and earlier, but dosen't work at all on any intel machine I've tried. The image is marked as "Universal" in Server Manager, and is an image from an intel MacBook.
    Leopard Server 10.5.1
I have 20 new iMac's in route. I really need NetInstall to work for them. Any help would be appreciated.

You say that your NetInstall was taken from an Intel MacBook. Was its OS Leopard? If it is Leopard then you do have a bizarre problem on your hands as it is Universal. Tiger client, on the other hand, is not Universal.
How new are the target clients? Could they have been shipped with a build of Leopard newer than the one you've based this NetInstall on?

  • Installing Tiger 10.4 on an intel machine

    Hi,
I recently sold a copy of OSX 10.4 Tiger (the 5 license family pack version) to someone on ebay. The disc was the first incarnation of Tiger, bought on the day of release last year, and I sold the software as I now have upgraded all 3 of my machines to intel and therefore have the appropriate licences for individual machines.
The problem I have is that the person I sold the disc to, says he cannot install this disc on an intel 'mac' that he has built himself and he now wants to return the software.
I did say in my ebay description that the disc would work with intel machines-was I right in saying this? Could 10.4 be installed on a 'proper' mac and then be upgraded to 10.4.8 via the software update and everything be fine?
The only reason I am asking this is because if I accept the software back then I will be out of pocket by £10 at least-ebay fees, shipping & paypal fees.
    Regards,
    Richard

I did say in my ebay description that the disc would work with
intel machines-was I right in saying this?
You were not right. The Tiger retail install package is for PPC Macs only.
There is no reason for Apple to provide a Tiger Universal retail install package which is required to install Tiger on an Intel or PPC Mac since all Intel Macs ship with a Tiger Intel version.
When Leopard is introduced next spring, the Leopard retail install package will be Universal.
The problem I have is that the person I sold the disc to, says
he cannot install this disc on an intel 'mac' that he has built himself
and he now wants to return the software.
It is not possible for someone to build an Intel Mac but it is possible for someone to build an Intel PC and it is against Apple's license agreement to install OS X on anything other than a Mac.
You should advertise your Tiger install package as a full retail install package which can be used to install Tiger on any PPC Mac that meets the minimum system requirements for Tiger.

  • CS2 died on Intel machine, need a fix.

This is my first post on these forums so please let me know if I am missing any info in my post.
So I have a user weho has CS2 thru CS4 on his machine.  He used to be on a PowerMac, one day we updated him to an Intel Mac and migrated all of his Account info over, CS2 included.
Last week he got the CMap error out of nowhere: "Adobe InDesign is missing required system fonts or CMap files.  Please reinstall InDesign."  He had some font issues on his machione so we believe it stemmed from there.
The easy fix is to reinstall inDesign, however, when I tried that, all apps are greyed out.
I wouldn't think this is an Intel issue as I've installed it on Intel machines many times.
So I followed the Unistall process on the Installer Disc and now all it will let me reinstall is GoLive, Photoshop.Imageready and Version Cue.
Any suggestions would be greatly apreciated.  Thanks.

    You are in unsupported territory.
You might try a complete uninstall (again) followed by manually cleaning the files as noted here.
Is there a reason that the applications weren't deactivated and installed clean on the new computer (instead of copying them over)?

but is this version compatible with Leopard?
also, I'm thinking of buying a macbook pro
is v4.5 a universal binary compatible on the new intel machines as well?
or will it at least function well in rosetta?

    Honestly...
If you were going to be keeping 4.5 - I'd just dedicate this machine for editing and buy a nice new mac for your fun office work.
FC 4.5 is NOT UB and will run in rosetta... but function well?? Hard to tell...

  • Will my copy of FCP run on the Intel machines

I currently have a G5 with a PowerPC chip and I am looking at purchasing one of the new MacBooks. However, I heard a rumor on the internet that my copy of FCP, which was purchased a year ago, will not run on the Intel machines.
    Is this correct?

Ok I found the link. So I have the entire Final Cut Studio Production Suite that I bought this Spring. So that means it will just cost me $49 for the upgrade?
Does the crossover effect any other applications?

  • Anybody running LP 9 on a non Intel machine?

I just saw that the requirements for LP9 include needing an Intel based machine.
Has anybody tried installing LP9 on a PowerMac Quad (pre Intel)? Will it even let you? Just curious.
I overlooked that small requirement, and now that I have the upgrade I think I'm gonna need to buy an Intel machine. That's an expensive conversion!!!!
    Thanks

I still love this G5, L9 runs fine on it, I mainly do audio so there's no problems here. Have a couple of sample libraries, East/West Gold... nothing too extravagant. I still enjoy recording people playing instruments or singing.
Minimum system requirement is 10.5.7, however... Apple will only support their app on the OS available when the application was released. As others have found out... using Pacifist, Logic 9 can be installed on any version of Leopard, maybe even 10.4.11... I don't think anyone has tried.
So, if you have a perfectly stable 10.5.5 system, you have to upgrade, even though it's not really necessary, it's for Apple's support convenience, not the users.

  • Can I set up an external drive so it can boot either PPC or Intel machines?

I have a LaCie external drive with Firewire 1 and 2 and USB2 interfaces. I hoped to creat bootable partitions for both architectures and boot either one using the appropriate interface. I seem to be stumped by the partitioning schemes. It appears that if I partition with GUID I can ONLY boot from, an Intel machine, and that conversely, if I partition with Apple Partition Map I CAN'T boot from an Intel machine. Is this actually the case? Is there a workaround?
    Cheers,
    Aunty

Install Mac OS X 10.5 on a PowerPC Mac to a drive partitioned as APM. Any other configuration would be tricky or impossible to get to work.
The resulting single system can boot up any G4, G5, or Intel Mac older than it, but won't contain the Boot Camp Assistant.
