Is rosetta killing the shadows of the whole system?
is rosetta killing the shadows of the whole system?
when i start an adobe app which needs rosette (photoshop, indesign, illustrator .. all CS2), all shadows of all windows (finder, mail .. every dropped shadow of any app in the whole system) are broken (ugly black lines instead of the smooth shadows).
i have to restart the macbook to solve this problem. very anoing.
ms office is doing well .. no such problem.
I'm having the drop-shadow problem, too (it's been showing up on my MacBook since the machine arrived three days ago); for those who haven't seen it, here's a screen capture.
But for me, it doesn't appear to be a Rosetta issue. I can sometimes use Rosetta apps (like Eudora) for hours without it happening, and when it does happen for me, it's often just on one or two windows, in apps like Terminal and Finder.
I called Apple Support yesterday; they said to take it in to a Genius bar. I did that today; the Geniuses on duty (who were very friendly and polite) said they'd never seen anything like it. One of them recommended re-seating the RAM (I haven't done that yet, but will shortly), and if that didn't work, doing an archive-and-install. Which I can do, but it's a little frustrating; this happened right out of the box (modulo my files and apps that got copied over from my PBG4, which of course didn't have this problem), so I don't think reinstalling the OS is going to help. But I suppose it's worth a try. (The Genius offered to do the reinstall for me, of course, but I hadn't quite backed up everything so I declined.)
Anyway, I'm posting 'cause (a) I wanted to let you know you're not alone, (b) I wanted to weigh in on the Rosetta aspect, and (c) I wanted to point people to the screen snap in case they haven't seen it.
I suppose I may as well point to my full journal entry for more details.

Drag and drop not working. When trying to move a cell or icon the shadow of the cell or icon being moved appears under the cursor but can't be released causing a freeze of function within the program. Happens in finder numbers, firefox, and when trying to move any file from the downloads folder.
This is a serious pain.
Please help.
WBYes, all I can tell you is that Finder does not have that function in ML. Your system is "working as expected".
You can file feedback here. -
When I apply a wallpaper only to the lock screen the shadow behind the slider disappears.
Since i updated to iOS 4.3 i have this issue. When I set a wallpaper to both home screen & lock screen the shadow behind the slider appears, but if i set a background to eighter lock or home screen, the shadow disappears. Is there a way I can fix this?
Well, i noticed this "issue" on my iPhone (4S, iOS 5.1.1) today. And since I found it also on my other iPhone (3GS, iOS 5.1), I think that it is not an issue but intention.

How to put a repeatable shadow at the bottom of a wine bottle
I'll select an image of a bottle (beer or wine) and it's all nice and clean around the bottom, totally isolated from the background. I've asked Photoshop savvy friends how to do this and they all have come up with some workaround that is not repeatable. Check out this image from a wine makers' website: the shadow at the bottom is the same from shot to shot and I'm sure is added at the bottom in post, not when the bottle was photographed. How to do this?
Attached is an image of a bottle with shadow from the website and one of my own bottle images with no shadow. Remember, it's got to be a repeatable shadow that I can add to any "finished" image and not have to worry about selecting around the nebulous outline of the shadow. Thanks.1) create a circle shape
2)squish the circle down to give it its shape
3)Move the shape layer below the image layer
4)Convert the shape layer to a smart object
5)Apply a guassian blur to the shape
6)Reduce the opacity of the shape layer
7)reposition the shape layer if needed.
The above assumes the bottle is on its own layer with no background
If necessary to remove the white background you can you the quick selection tool to select the white and hit the delete key. To make sure the bottle will be on a transparent background, you must unlock the image layer by dragging its lock icon to the trashcan before hitting the delete key.
Once all the steps above are done, you can apply a new background by either filling a new layer with a color and moving that layer below all other layers.
or
use the solid color adjustment layer and set its color to your choosing and then move that layer below all other layers.
Here is a quick example (logo of bottle has been pixelated) -
Display is wrong on the shadow side after updating to OSX 10.9.2
After updating to OSX 10.9.2, Aperture 3.5.1 begins to display wierd shadows. Even if the value of the black point is set to 0, the black appear to be blotching although there is no clipping appearing in the histogram. Lightroom and other 3rd party programs appear normal.
I shoot raw and I use a Canon 5D Mark II. Here is a grab from one of the pics. Note the muddy color of the green in the shadow and the black and the surrounding. This is not so when opened in lightroom or any other raw processing software.

Hi, I'm trying to drag the bottom point of my tone curve to kill the shadows, but it does not allow me to move it.. Can someone help?*
This little point curve graph does not really look like a clickable button, that's why .
In LR you can try to click/doubleclick on everything you see: text, boxes, triangles. There are some surprises!
That's without talking keyboard shortcuts !

Urgent: cannot start the shadow instance at phase STARTSAP_TRANS
We are upgrading to NW2004s (ABAP only) from 640.
<u><b>How to re-start the shadow instance?</b></u>
At this point, <b>anyway we cannot start the shadow instance.</b>
At SAPMMC, the disp+work
1) first show "running but the dialog queue standstill"
2) then show" running but not connected to the message server"
3) then the disp+work dies.
Above happens in 1 minute after re-start.

The PREPARE module Import will be started now.
During this module programs, structures, and table entries
required by PREPARE are imported (the socalled "tool import").
Note: This can cause a loss of performance in R/3
In rare cases, a concurrent transport via the transport directory
may disturb the tool import. Please avoid any concurrent import
during this PREPARE module.

How to defeat the shadow?
I have an ObjectStyle, that has shadow in its properties. Now i need to switch off this option.
I tried like this:
myDoc.AllObjectStyles.Item("my").ContentEffectsEnablingSettings.EnableDropShadow = False
myDoc.AllObjectStyles.Item("my").FillEffectsEnablingSettings.EnableDropShadow = False
myDoc.AllObjectStyles.Item("my").ObjectEffectsEnablingSettings.EnableDropShadow = False
myDoc.AllObjectStyles.Item("my").StrokeEffectsEnablingSettings.EnableDropShadow = False
It didn't help.
Then tried this (to directly kill some shadow settings):
myDoc.AllObjectStyles.Item("my").ContentTransparencySettings.DropShadowSettings.XOffset = 0
myDoc.AllObjectStyles.Item("my").ContentTransparencySettings.DropShadowSettings.YOffset = 0
myDoc.AllObjectStyles.Item("my").ContentTransparencySettings.DropShadowSettings.Size = 0
myDoc.AllObjectStyles.Item("my").ContentTransparencySettings.DropShadowSettings.Opacity = 0
Also no effect. But in Objstyle properties the "check mark" appeared in grey color (means, as far as i guess, "partly activated").
So, how to switch on/off this ... shadow? This worked only on selected object and in this syntaxis:
mInd.Selection.Item(1).TransparencySettings.DropShadowSettings.Mode = 1852796517 'shadow off
mInd.Selection.Item(1).TransparencySettings.DropShadowSettings.Mode = 2020623440 'shadow on
But in ObjStyles doesn't work. Moreover, after manual removing shadow from object, which has objSt with shadow, this option "almoust" disappear from style properties. This is smth.... -
Xcompgr + urxvt with true transparency no shadows around the window
hello!
i have a big problem. i want a terminal with real transparency. making a other terminal transparent with transset is bad, because it makes the whole window transparent, also the borders!
so i decided to try urxvt. i start urxvt with the following command:
urxvt -fn "xft:Monospace:pixelsize=11" +sb -depth 32 -fg white -bg rgba:2000/2000/2000/dddd
it works, the terminal has real transparency, but it has no shadows around the window/terminal. when i start urxvt with a depth of 24, there are shadows but no transparency!
i'm running e17 with xcompmgr and the following settings:
xcompmgr -c -f -r4 -t-3 -l-3 -D5 -o 0.7 -d :0.0&
is there someone who can help me? i hope it!

Last edited by iggy (2007-12-04 11:45:42)Actually I do and I have no shadows either - but I wasn't even aware of this issue until you pointed it out.
But I like it without shadow, using OpenBox here. -
Any way to remove the shadows around windows?

When I import a cd with more than one artist itunes shows each artist's song separately and won't group the album as a whole - this is incredibly frustrating something that Windows media player doesn't do. Does anyone have a simple cure for this annoyance?
Generally all you need to do is fill in an appropriate Album Artist. For more details see my article on Grouping Tracks Into Albums, in particular the topic One album, too many covers.

how do i get it to print the whole article? i don't seem to have a problem printing from my old windows laptop
melbaby_3 wrote:
when I clicked on your link and hit print, all pages were there!
That suggests there's no problem with Safari or Quartz, the PDF rendering engine used by Safari, Preview, and other Mac applications.
When I'm in the database and have the article open that I want to print, I click on the "full text in pdf" link and it opens in another safari window.
Does the PDF in this other Safari window have all the pages? If yes, why don't you print from this window?
It's very difficult to tell what might be going on if you don't give very specific details.
For instance, in many reference databases, full-text articles are not free. You have to pay to view them, either article by article, or by subscription. Your school may have such a subscription, but, if it does, you probably need to access the database through the portal, web site, or facility provided by your school (your school's librarian should be able to help you with that). If you don't, the database has no way of knowing you have a right to view the full text, and may give you just a preview or the article's first page.
Another possibility is that the database provides full-text PDFs in a format not compatible with Quartz, which may be able to render only the first page. But, in such a case, I'd expect Safari to print blank pages. If that's the case, you need to save the PDF on your hard disk and open it with Adobe Reader (Preview wouldn't work).
There are other possibilities, but these two seem to me the most likely.
Would I have to save it in preview first
You should save the PDF on your hard disk from Safari. (I think you should do this anyway, just in case you need to refer to the article again later.) Instead of just clicking the "'full text in pdf' link", press and hold Control, then click. This should give you a contextual menu; if the link points to a PDF file, you should see the commans "Save Linked File to 'Downloads'" and "Save Linked File As…". Use either, save the file, then, in Finder, double-click on it. Preview should open it.
It is possible that the link is not to a PDF file, but to a script which fetches that PDF file for you. In that case, it's pointless to download it. Click on it, and then, if the PDF viewing window opens in Safari, move the cursor towards the centre of the bottom of the window. A bar with commands should appear; one of them will download the file to your Downloads folder. -
Why do I get shadows in the corners of pictures taken on my mini iPad?
Why do I get shadows in the corners of pictures taken on my mini iPad. It seems the conditions have to be perfect to get a decent picture. Why?
Sounds like vignetting, but you need to ask that on an iPad forum not the iPhoto for Mac one.

How can I kill all Threads of the same class from within the run() method?
Ok
I have a class called Consumer that extends Thread
I have several Consumer threans running... but, when a certain condition is true (within the run() method) in ANY of the threads, I want to kill ALL the threads of that object.
is this possible?I know this is gonna be too demanding, but can someone please tell me why my Consumer's run() method never reaches the System.out.println( "ALL CONSUMING DONE") line
Create a multi-threaded prime number calculator that is based on the producer-consumer model
using semaphores. Your program should be able to check for prime numbers in a range specified
by the user and with a variable number of threads. Example:
$ java PrimeFind 3 5000 10000
should use 1 producer and 2 consumers (3 threads in total, obviously the minimum is 2) to find all
the prime numbers in the range [5000,10000].
The producer should: use a buffer to store candidate numbers that have to be checked for
primality.
Consumers should: read from the buffer, check if a number is prime and update the status of the
program accordingly (e.g. show the number on the screen, or save it to a file)

* Why does the counter semaphore always give a +1 result at the end
* Is there a way I can verify that all the work is not being done by only 1 consumer thread? In other words, the workload is being shared properly
* if I put ready.acquire() outside or inside the while loop, its not making any difference, why?
* Strangely, its not making any difference if I playing with the release() and aquire() of the semaphores, WHY?!?!

BTW, when I tried to change extends Thread to implements Runnable I got some kinda of error.
Actually, my program is pretty complete... its just that something if messed up in my Consumer's run() method's while loop... I think
I know guys its crazy to ask ya'll to look at so much code, but.... I'd really appreciate it. This assignment is killing me, been at it since 10 hours now.... -
How do I add a drop shadow to the page in Muse?
How can I apply a drop shadow to the page template in Muse? If I place a rectangle it will not change shape according to the page size. Is this a feature?
Hello,
You're most possibly referring to "Favicons", and they can be added in a Muse site from the "File -> Site Properties -> Layout" section. Check this screenshot: http://jingsite.businesscatalyst.com/jing/2013-09-05_2332.png
Hope this helps.
