Is SQL Server needed?
Does the sql server engine have to be running for Lookout 6.0.2 to work properly or is just to query the database with NIMax? For security purposes, IT wants to block port 1433 which is for sql server if it is not needed to run Lookout properly.
Thanks!

Hi Jason!
So I played around a bit and couldn't find any problems with stopping the SQL Server -- you just lose the ability to store and query alarms and events to/from the SQL database. Alarms are stored in a temporary cache by Citadel until a new connection can be made with the SQL Server, so I'm not sure what long term consequences of this may be.

SQL Server, RAM Usage, Networking Admin
We have a VM Guest configured as follows: dedicated Sql 2008 Sp3 (x64) running on Windows 2008 R2 x64, 32GB RAM. Per Task Manager (if it is to be believed) the sql server process has allocated 20GB of RAM. The Networking Manager says
that sql grabs every bit of memory you give it. He has a hard time believing that sql really needs that much memory.
a. I pointed out that we can cap the (buffer pool) memory and that sql, while reserving it, will not use the RAM unless it is actually needed. (In other words, that 20GB was needed at one point in time).
b. I also pointed out that sql is not too quick to return the memory even it is no longer needed.
c. I look for hard page faults on the server as an initial indication that RAM may be taxed.
d. I told him there is no easy way to estimate the amount of RAM that a given sql server needs
In your opinion, are the statements a-d relatively factual or way off base?
TIA,
edm2
P.S. Recently he indicated that if we raise the Sql RAM limit on a box then Sql will take it all and, despite, what is commonly said, large amounts of RAM costs lots of money. Let us say this matter has been a point of contention between us for
some time and we are still on opposite sides of the railroad track.Hello,
Per Task Manager (if it is to be believed) the sql server process has allocated 20GB of RAM. The Networking Manager says that sql grabs every bit of memory you give it. He has a hard time believing that sql really needs that much memory.
You're correct, don't trust task manager. If the server is not configured (max server memory) then yes, SQL Server will gobble up all available memory if it needs to (it on allocates memory if it already doesn't have room).
a. I pointed out that we can cap the (buffer pool) memory and that sql, while reserving it, will not use the RAM unless it is actually needed. (In other words, that 20GB was needed at one point in time).
You sir are 100% correct!
b. I also pointed out that sql is not too quick to return the memory even it is no longer needed.
Yes and no. SQL Server can and will respond to the windows low memory flag and give back memory if possible (for example, it won't give it back if using locked pages in memory [LPIM]). Low memory is different in versions of windows but it's always around
100 MB which IMHO is way too late. Couple that with the fact it's a VM and it's memory could already be paged out by the host and no one would ever know means a crash could happen.
c. I look for hard page faults on the server as an initial indication that RAM may be taxed.
That would be true for a physical system. While it still sort of is true for a VM, we have no way of knowing if the host has that memory paged which would also cause issues (slowness, etc). Still doesn't hurt to watch though :)
d. I told him there is no easy way to estimate the amount of RAM that a given sql server needs
SQL Server will always happily take as much memory as you give it, to a point. If at one point it used 20 GB that's a good start. SQL Server wants everything to be in memory, because that has the fastest access time. So take into account the sizes of your
databases, any CLR or items that run outside of the database (or are hosted), all of the queries that want to live in cache as well so they only have to be compiled once, etc.
In your opinion, are the statements a-d relatively factual or way off base?
See above :)
P.S. Recently he indicated that if we raise the Sql RAM limit on a box then Sql will take it all and, despite, what is commonly said, large amounts of RAM costs lots of money. Let us say this matter has been a point of contention between us for
some time and we are still on opposite sides of the railroad track.
I feel you. Things to look for inside of SQL Server for memory pressure are lazy writes/second, free list stalls, a large increase in general IO of the server (could just mean the workload changed, tbh), etc. Also, depending on how the Guest is setup and
the Host is configured will have a lot to do with performance. For example, if the guest can cross numa nodes and ends up accessing tons of foreign memory, if dynamic memory for the guest is used and constantly swapped. None of those will manifest itself in
the counters but will surely have a negative impact on SQL Server.
So, to be fair to you, you're correct in that (Depending on how the Host/Guest is configured) adding more RAM may or may not help (or make things worse if the memory is all paged on the host). To be fair to him, SQL Server on a physical box magically makes
things run faster since they'll mostly be in memory.

Upgrade SQL server 2008 r2 to latest available Service Pack in SP 2010 farm.
Hi,
We have 2 server's in the farm ( WFE+App server and SQL server).
We are planning to upgrade SQL server 2008 r2 to latest available Service pack [10.50.6000 (SP3)] version.
So before upgrading SQL server , need to take any necessary actions from SharePoint server side ?
And once patching is done on SQL server, need to run SharePoint Configuration wizard ?
Please provide best way for this upgrade.
Cheers,
RameshNKYou certainly can turn off SharePoint/stop IIS if you wish, but it isn't required. SharePoint will be unavailable during a portion of the SP3 upgrade and will reconnect once SQL is back online.

I want to install sql server 2008 R2 on one of the machine and SharePoint server 2013 on another.
I want to get best performance out of two systems.
I would do farm installation.
1.) Does sql server need to be more powerful or SharePoint server hardware wise.
2.) Can i install applications like , search server , access server etc on the server running sql server.
Basically I am looking for best performance.

SQL Server Window Authentication Slow
Hi
We are using SQL Server 2012. When we run our applications with window authentication it runs really slow. But if we use same application with database user authentication then it runs really fast.
Any Suggestion?
thanks
DrewHi Drew,
When you use Windows Authentication I assume your are using domain accounts (no local account). Your database server has probably some issue connecting to Active Directory. You might have similar delay logging on to the server using a domain account and
or rebooting the server might also be slow. Most likely your DNS server settings on that server or on your client are incorrect or out of date.
You can check this from the Command Prompt with the IPCONFIG.EXE /ALL command. Make a note of configured DNS servers. The configured DNS servers should ONLY be the DNS servers from the Active Directory domain (typically those are the same servers as the
domain controllers). You should remove any DNS servers from the Internet.
Why does this matter? You may ask. SQL Server needs to connect to the domain controller to verify your credentials. to that it first needs to know the IP address of the domain controller. This information is stored on a DNS server in your Active Directory
domain, not on public DNS servers on the Internet. If your server is configured with public DNS servers from the Internet, requesting this information will fail and cause an delay until either a correct DNS server is contacted or the domain controller is contacted
using legacy (NTLM) methods.
You may have a more complicated situation if more Active Directory domains are involved (e.g. domain trusts, forest trusts, complex nested group memberships.), or if the configured Domain Controller is located at another site and is only connected by a slow
link, or there is actually a performance issue with your domain controllers. In that case your Active Directory Administrator may supply with more information.
In short: check your DNS server settings.
Hope this helps. -
Reporting Services Add-in for Sharepoint- does it need an SQL Server license?
In a new project we will be creating an SSRS in Sharepoint integrated mode. For this we'll need SQL Server and Sharepoint on that box.
We'll also have one or more SharePoint Web Front End (WFE) servers. To allow them to connect to the SSRS-in-sharepoint-mode box, and to present the user with the right user interface for doing so, I believe we can install the Reporting Services Add-In for
Sharepoint on the WFE servers.
The question is, do we need to have SQL Server license for each WFE server where we use the Reporting Services Add-In, or is it free to use?
We've had advice that we need to buy a SQL Server license everywhere we use the add-in, but I am not sure this is correct.
Thanks in advance,
RichHello there,
The Reporting service Add-in for SharePoint can be downloaded free on Microsoft Download site. That means it does not need any license on the add-in.

Need To Create a table in Sql Server and do some culculation into the table from Oracle and Sql
Hello All,
I'm moving a data from Oracle to Sql Server with ETL (80 tables with data) and i want to track the number of records that i moving on the daily basis , so i need to create a table in SQL Server, wilth 4 columns , Table name, OracleRowsCount, SqlRowCount,
and Diff(OracleRowsCount - SqlRowCount) that will tell me the each table how many rows i have in Oracle, how many rows i have in SQL after ETL load, and different between them, something like that:
Table Name OracleRowsCount SqlRowCount Diff
Customer 150 150
0
Sales 2000 1998
2
Devisions 5 5
0
(I can add alot of SQL Tasks and variables per each table but it not seems logicly to do that, i tryid to find a way to deal with that in vb but i didn't find)
What the simplest way to do it ?
Thank you
Best Regards
DanielHi Daniel,
According to your description, what you want is an indicator to show whether all the rows are inserted to the destination table. To achieve your goal, you can add a Row Count Transformation following the OLE DB Destination, and redirect bad rows to the Row
Count Transformation. This way, we can get the count of the bad rows without redirecting these rows. Since the row count value is stored in a variable, we can create another string type variable to retrieve the row count value from the variable used by the
Row Count Transformation, and then use a Send Mail Task to send the row count value in an email message body. You can also insert the row count value to the SQL Server table through Execute SQL Task. Then, you can check whether bad rows were generated in the
package by querying this table.

Need to convert DTS packages to SQL Server 2012 environment.
Hi Friends,
As Part of the Project Requirement,we need to convert DTS packages to SQL Server 2012 environment.
Please sugest me best approach.
ThanksBest approach is to re-design the packages in SSIS 2012 directy if it is feasible. Because most of the DTS feaures are discontinued and also you will have to clean up all errors that you are going to get after migration.

Otherwise you need to migrate it first to 2008R2 and then 2012 version.

SQL Server Database Connectivity with Visual Studio 2012 - Help Needed
Hello,
I am having Visual Studio 2012 and SQL Developer 4.0 installed on my system with Windows 8 - 64bit
I want to shift a VS project with an SQL database connectivity to another new Laptop (above mentioned) ...
I have the project opened in VS without bieng connected to the database..
I have a backup file of the database (which needs to be restored to a new created database on SQL Developer)
The problem:
I am unable to create a server connection in SQL Developer which will allow me to create a new database followed by the recovery from backup file.
I am getting the following error message when I try to create a connection:
Status: Faliure - IO error: The network adapter could not establish a connection
Please help me in setting up a server connection and adding a new sql databaseThe error message seemed unfamiliar to me and since I had never heard of SQL Developer before, I went to Google. Google might be pulling my legs, but it appears that SQL Developer is related to Oracle. This forum is devoted to SQL Server, so you are in the
wrong place.
Try finding a forum for SQL Developer.

I need to build a solution containing a database project and an integration services project for SQL Server 2008R2. Apparently, the subset of Visual Studio tools that comes with SQL Server 2008R2 does not include database projects and does not have
Team Foundation Server support. Because of those limitations, I am trying to determine which version of Visual Studio will allow me to:
1. Build a single solution that includes both a database project and an Integration Services project
2. For the database project, be able to import a database schema from an existing SQL Server 2008 R2 database, do schema compares and update the project from the database and vice versa
3. For the Integration Services project, be able to deploy the packages to SQL Server Integration Services on SQL Server 2008 R2 (that is, to the msdb database).
4. Use Team Foundation Server for source control of the whole solution, including both project types.Hi G Britton,
To build a solution containing a database project and an integration services project for SQL Server 2008 R2 and use Team Foundation Server for source control.
You can choose to install Visual Studio 2008.
And as you want to utilize Schema compare and/or Data compare functionalities in Visual Studio, you will need to install the
Visual Studio Team System 2008 Database Edition or Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Suite.
In addition, for Visual Studio issues, I would like to recommend you post the question in the
Visual
Studio forums to get better support.

Does it need effort to upgrade SSRS from SQL Server 2005 to 2014?
Hi,
i have a customer who wants to upgrade the their system. for SQL Server part, the current version is 2005, they want to upgrade to 2014. is it possible that don't change any code for SSRS? if have to change, what's the estimated effort? the total RDL files
are more than 200.Hi dingsheng,
In this scenario, you don't need to change code for Reporting Services. Those reports can be still available. Please run SQL Server Upgrade Advisor on the report server computer to determine any issues that might prevent you from successfully upgrading.
For more information, please see:

Need to connect SQL Server 2008 and CR 2008 via OLE DB SQL Server Provider
I am relatively new to Crystal but have done some minor design/layout work in the past. I just purchased CR 2008 and dowloaded a Eval Copy of SQL Server 2008 to build test reports that will then be uploaded to a hosted web app we use for use with live data.
I am having some trouble, however, getting SQL server and CR 08 to talk the way I need them to. We have to use the OLE DB for SQL Server Provider connection for the reports to work in our hosted live environment but I cannot get this to work on SQL 2008. The server never appears in the Server dropdown and if I manually type it get the following error:
failed to open connection.
Detail ADO Error Code: 0x80004005
Source: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server
Description: [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access is denied.
SQL State: 08001
Native Error: 17 [Database Vendor Code: 17 ]
I am setting up the connection through the Database Expert choosing the OLE DB (ADO) folder and then selecting 'Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server' then entering my server name, user id, password, and Database name.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled everything twice. I have installed the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Analysis Service 10.0 OLEDB Provider pack.
My provider/host does use SQL Server 2005 but since I can't get a free Evaluation version of it I have to use 2008 for my local copy. I have searched the web over (including here) and cannot find an answer to my issue.
I cannot use SQL Server Express version because our copy of the DB is too big. I cannot use the Native 10 provider as the reports will not work once I have uploaded them to the live data.
any help anyone can provide for this would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you and sorry if this is a dupe post. I have searched everywhere and cannot find the answer.Hello,
Go to Microsoft's site and download their OLE DB test tool and test the connection. Did you install the MS client tools to test the connection also?
As a test try creating an ODBC System DSN just to verify you can connect and create a report also.
And don't use the SA account, MS 2008 disabled it, sort of, so you'll have to create a new account and grant permissions to any table you need to use.
SQL 2008 changed security model big time so it's not the same as 2005 once was....
Good luck

Edited by: user10876711 on May 12, 2011 9:18 AMwhen you want to connect from Oracle to a SQl Server you need the Oracle Gateway (HSODBC or even better Dg4ODBC) and a FOREIGN ODBC DRIVER for your foreign database - a SQL Server ODBC driver. You have to get this driver from a 3rd party vendor - Oracle does not offer any foreign ODBC drivers.
So before being able to use DG4ODBC/HSODBC you need to install from a 3rd paryt vendor a SQL Server ODBC driver. Commercial vendrs are for example Data Direct, Openlink or Easysoft.
On Unix ODBC drivers commonly also require a driver manager. If the ODBC driver vendor does not ship one with the ODBC driver you can get it from www.unixodbc.org
