SQL Server 2008 R2: which version of Visual Studio do I need to keep database projects and SSIS projects in the same solution
I need to build a solution containing a database project and an integration services project for SQL Server 2008R2. Apparently, the subset of Visual Studio tools that comes with SQL Server 2008R2 does not include database projects and does not have
Team Foundation Server support. Because of those limitations, I am trying to determine which version of Visual Studio will allow me to:
1. Build a single solution that includes both a database project and an Integration Services project
2. For the database project, be able to import a database schema from an existing SQL Server 2008 R2 database, do schema compares and update the project from the database and vice versa
3. For the Integration Services project, be able to deploy the packages to SQL Server Integration Services on SQL Server 2008 R2 (that is, to the msdb database).
4. Use Team Foundation Server for source control of the whole solution, including both project types.
Hi G Britton,
To build a solution containing a database project and an integration services project for SQL Server 2008 R2 and use Team Foundation Server for source control.
You can choose to install Visual Studio 2008.
And as you want to utilize Schema compare and/or Data compare functionalities in Visual Studio, you will need to install the
Visual Studio Team System 2008 Database Edition or Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Suite.
In addition, for Visual Studio issues, I would like to recommend you post the question in the
Visual
Studio forums to get better support.

This great blog entry titled
SQL Server Data Tools - Business Intelligence for Visual Studio 2013 (SSDT BI), link below, highlights the lack of support for SSIS projects using SQL Server 2012, VS 2013 and SSDT BI for VS 2013. I see there is a new version
on SSDT BI for VS 2013 (12.0.2430.0, File Name: SSDTBI_x86_ENU.exe, Date Published: 10/27/2014) link below.
Does this version support SSIS projects using SQL Server 2012 using VS 2013 and SSDT BI for VS 2013?

According to the picture, it seems that we can use SSIS 2012 support is not included in SSDT-BI for VS 2013. And based on the previous versions, SSIS always different from SSRS, SSAS.
SSDT-BI for Visual Studio 2012 supports versions of SQL Server as follows:
SSAS project can target SQL 2012 or lower
SSRS project can target SQL 2012 or lower
SSIS project can target only SQL 2012

Thank you for your understanding.

Error installing SQL Server Data Tools - Business Intelligence for Visual Studio 2013
Hi
I am trying to install SQL Server Data Tools - Business Intelligence for Visual Studio 2013 and am getting the following error
This installation package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package.
I am running
Windows 8.1 x64
SQL Server 2014 Developer Edition x64
Visual Studio 2013 Professional
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Biztalk DeveloperCould you please check if Windows Installer service is running and is in automatic startup mode.
The other thing is, if you’re running an x64-based SQL instance (64-bit), make sure to select “New Instance” on the Installation Type page, and NOT “Add features to an existing instance”.

Which version of Visual Studio for Apps created with VS 10 or before
I will be working on an application that was originally developed with VS 2005 and currently maintained with VS2010.
I have VS 2013 installed but the dev lead on the old application says I should be working on it with VS 2010.
His belief is that if I open the project in VS 2013 it will introduce incompatibilities since the rest of the his team is using VS 10.
I would appreciate any suggestions or feedback on this topic.
I do not really have enough experience with maintaining older apps in Visual Studio to know whether this is really a potential issue.
Thanks
MattHi Matt,
I think this document would be helpful for you:
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh266747.aspx
It shared us the project which are supported in VS2010 with sp1, VS2012 with update 4 and VS2013.
So you would check whether your projects are compatible between different VS versions.
Of course, if possible you could test it between two versions after you take a backup for this project.

What version of Visual Studio should I upgrade to?
I am using Visual Studio 10 Professional in my Company. There are only two people using it but our WPF application is vast and we also have WCF services. The OS is Windows Server 2008 R2.
What version of Visual Studio should I upgrade to?
Thanks.Visual studio 2013 pro would mean upgrading your solution but is the current version.
2015 is on the way.
Check the os requirements if you think you should maybe hang on for that.
I think 2015 ctp is still available to trial.

I have an application that is done using SSRS on visual studio and it connects to the report server on SQL server 2008 environment.
I've been changing the existing reports using visual studio 2008 and modifying the reports on the report server. How do I add a new report to the application ? I created a new report and deployed it on the report server but it didn't show up in the application.
I can access the application source code on visual studio 2010 and TFS (Team Foundation). Thanks.Hi,
I have a question. This application retrieves SSRS reports from the report sever. When I download the reports
from the SQL Server I can open them in visual studio 2008 but they don't open in visual studio 2010. I can access the application files on visual studio 2010 and team foundation server 2010. I was unable to open team foundation server 2008 on visual studio
2008. The issue is that I am unable to add a report with a new name to the application. I use visual studio 2008 to deploy the reports on the report server but it has to be the same name to be able to run the report from the application. I can deploy any report
on the report server but I can't access it from the application unless it has to be the same name as the present reports. If I keep the report the same name then it will replace the old report and the new report will run from the application. But only if it's
the same name. I guess when I add a new report to the application with a new name I am supposed to add a definition in the application C sharp files on visual studio 2010 so that the new report will show in the application. What's your opinion
? I have attached 2 images of the application and team foundation server 2010 and the report server.
Thanks. -
Install BI Tools with paid VS2008 Pro in workstation and paid Sql Server 2008 R2 in server?
My workstation has VS2008 Pro (paid) and Sql Express (free); our Windows Enterprise server has SQL Server 2008 R2 RTM (paid).
In other words, my workstation may not have a paid version of the sql server DB, but our server does. Is there a possibility that I can install the BI development tools in my workstation?
Thanks.
VMHi VM,
As you can see on the link below
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc645993(v=sql.105).aspx#Dev_tools
The Business Intelligence Development Studio is not available on SQL Server 2008 Express Edition. So if you want to the BIDS tool is available on your workstation, then you need to change the edition from Express to other edition.
Besides, you can install SQL Server Data Tools - Business Intelligence for Visual Studio 2012 on your workstation, in this case, the BI development tools is available on your workstation. The SQL Server Data Tools - Business Intelligence for Visual Studio
2012 is available on the link below.

You are trying to attach SQL Server 2012 database files to SQL Server 2008 R2 which is not allowed, you either need to upgrade your SQL Server 2008 to 2012 or alternatively you can generate all scripts from SQL Server 2012 and execute it in SQL Server
2008 R2.
You can refer below link to how to generate script.

I've been searching for HOURS how to resolve this issue:
I am trying to upgrade SQL Server 2008 R2 (Express Edition with advanced services) to SQL SERVER 2014 Standard edition, my first issue was to update the 2008 R2 to Service pack 2 on the first FEATURE RULE TEST, at this time on it's keep saying this:
======================================================================================
Rule Check Result
Rule "SQL Server 2008 R2 Service pack 2 or later is requered for upgrade.: failed.
This SQL Server 2008 R2 features that have been selected to be upgraded to SQL Server 2014 are not at the require service pack. To continue with this upgrade, install SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 2 or lager to the selected instance and the shared features.
=====================================================================================
This is the Configuration Report issue:
Microsoft SQL Server 2014 - System Configuration Check Report
UpgradeFeatureSpecificRules: SQL Server 2014 Setup configuration checks for rules group 'UpgradeFeatureSpecificRules'
KJRTMUpgradeBlockRule
Checks if the currently selected SQL Server 2008 R2 features to upgrade are at the supported service pack. Failed The SQL Server 2008 R2 features that have been selected to be upgraded to SQL Server 2014 are not at the
required service pack. To continue with this upgrade, install SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 2 or later to the selected instance and the shared features.
====================================================================================
I try after hours and finally did install the Upgrade Advisor and got not issues, the last choice I was to uninstall the Management Studio because in other upgrade express versions got blocked, but in this new version of SQL Server 2014 I don't see any way
out!!!
Thanks.Hi again
This is the scenario:
-I have installed the SQL SERVER 2008 R2 With Advanced services (version 10.50.1600.1), and now my guest decide to upgrade to an STARNDARD version which nowadays Microsoft is offering the 2014 version.
-As all IT Support and DBA I try to upgrade to SQL 2014 to check and see with requirements were missing or updates. The first check report only ask to upgrade to SQL SERVER 2008 R2 SP2 (version 10.51.2500.0) which I found in the optional update list and
resolved immediately with the Windows Update service.
-Finally, I realise doing the discovery report (suggested in the last post) is that Windows update only download the service pack 2 for SQL Server 2008 instead of the 2008 R2 (I downloaded manually) then the version was upgrade to 10.52.4000.0
Next time I might download the updates manually and not loosing a lot hours with Windows Update, another point very important is that when SQL Server 2008 R2 is installed, create the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 folder at all programas in the Startup menu:
with the SQL Server Installation Center, but there is not one R2, when you execute this one just show the 2008 installed features.
Now we are on 12.0.2000.8
Thanks anyway and all of you for your interest!!! -
Hello,
I am in charge of moving an existing SAP NW BI (SPS20) from a MS SQL Server 2005 database on Windows Server 2003 (x864/64 bit) Platform to a MS SQL Server 2008 database/Windows Server 2008 Platform (x64/64 bit).
The SID of the SAP system will remain the same.
The thing is that I have always worrked so far on Oracle/Unix environements, windows/MSSQL is an entire new world for me,
so I am quite worried.
I have read many sap notes/installation guides/forum posts regarding this operation, I will describe here my understanding
of the techinical operations that I will need to perfrom.
Could you correct me if I am wrong, as well as give me your comments ?
1/ I will need to perform an SQL server database copy within a homogeneous system copy.
2/First ,I'll have to install on the target environnement the SQL server 2008 database. I'll have to install the SQL Server Database Software with SQL4SAP (no need to install the database server software manually, right ?). Afterwards, I'll install on the target environnent, SAP Netweaver 7.0 SR3 with a modified Instalaltion Master DVD.
3/ On the source environement, I'll perfrom a database backup of the SQL Server 2005 system and restore the database on the target environement. since I choose to perfrom a restore of the database , there is no need to follow all the steps described in sap note 151603 :determine the file structure of the source database, create the directory structure for the target database, etc ...
4/ Once the restoration is finished, I use SAPINST and finish the homogeneous copy : >additional sofware->system copy>target system->central system --> Based on AS Abap --central installation
Your comments are welcome.
Thank you for your attention
Best Regards.
RaoulHi Raoul,
you also need a modified Kernel DVD for the installation on SQL 2008 (see SAP Note 1152240).
And don't forget to install and patch the Visual Studio c++ Runtime (also described in that note).
I also would recommend to restore the backup and then install SAP NW 7.0 SR3 and use the restored SQL 2008 database.
So the basic steps are:
1. Perform backup and restore to SQL 2008
1.1 Install SQL 2008 with SQL4SAP
1.2 Backup old database
1.3. Restore backup on SQL 2008
2. Install VC runtime on Win 2008
3. Create modified Kernel DVD
4. Create modified Master DVD
5. Perform system copy target installaton with - additional sofware->system copy>target system--->central system --> Based on AS Abap --central installation and use the SQL 2008 database
You could also use SQL Server 2008 R2 which was release last month.
Please also check Note 1476928

HI ,
I am getting this error in sql server 2008 R2 SP2 version .

Check this part of the blog (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/psssql/archive/2010/05/05/error-18056-can-be-unwanted-noise-in-certain-scenarios.aspx)
"If the above error message (note that the state number should reflect 29) is the only message in the SQL Server Errorlog along with no other errors noticed in the environment
(connectivity failures to the SQL instance in question, degraded performance, high CPU usage, Out of Memory errors), then this message can be treated as benign and safely ignored."

I have VS 2013 Professional, and just installed SQL Server 2014 Developer version. Can someone tell me where the proper location for the Data Tools (fka BIDS) is located ? I'm seeing CPT1, etc. but looking for the truly released version.
THank you,
JohnHi,
SSDT-BI installs the Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools Business Intelligence project templates for Analysis Services, Integration Services, and Reporting Services. SSDT does not contain those BI project templates.
SQL Server Data Tools for SQL Server 2014 is available declares that there is a update for Visual Studio 2012 and 2013 has been pushed
which makes SQL Server Data Tools fully compatible with SQL Server 2014.
As I understand, what you need is SSDT-BI and checking updates would not do much help.
Per http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42313, Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools - Business Intelligence for Visual Studio 2013 has been removed from the Download
Center since April 11.
SSDT-BI has been temporarily removed to deal with side by side issues with SSDT-SQL.
Please be patient and wait it to be reposted. However, I cannot guarantee when it may be released. Sorry for the inconvenience you have experienced and thank you for your understanding and continued support.
Thanks.

I have used SSRS a lot years ago with Sql Server 2000 and Sql Server 2005. I have written external assemblies, ... But now I have to do this with Sql Server 2008 (R2 -- which I realize I am way behind the times already but ...) in sql server 2000 and
2005 there was a tab for datasource to the left of the tab for design which was to the left of the preview tab. How do I get to the datasource window in sql server 2008 (r2) ?
I see that datasource explorer. But where can I get to the datasource window to edit my queries and so forth for sql server 2008 (R2)?
Thanks
Rich PI think I found the answer to my question --- just right-click on the the Data Sources or Datasets for editing connections and dataset queries. I'm guessing it gets even fancier with Sql Svr 2012 - 2014. Man, that's the one thing
about coding platforms -- you let it go for a few years and come back, and everything has changed (well, a lot of things). Now I need to figure out how to add an external assembly to SSRS 2008 (R2).

I have recently installed SQL Server 2008. When I try to execute a query against an Access database, I receive this debugging error:
"Unable to start Transact-SQL debugger. The Transact-SQL debugger does not support SQL Server 2005 or earlier versions of SQL Server. (SQLEditors)"
Nor will the query execute; I get a transport-level error 0. Any thoughts?Hi Davidmhjr,
>>Unable to start the Transact-SQL Debugger. The Transact-SQL Debugger does not support SQL Server 2005 or earlier versions of SQL Server. (SQLEditors).
Have you tried to restart the server once you have installed SQL Server 2008? As Naomi N mentioned please check the version of SQL Server you are using.
If you tried to connect to SQL Server 2005 from SQL Server 2008 SSMS, you would not be able to debug and get this error, it happens because T-SQL debugger includes both server-side and client-side components. The server-side debugger components are installed
with each instance of the SQL Server 2008 Database Engine. The client-side components are installed when you install the SQL Server 2008 client-side tools.
So it works with SQL Server 2008 only so far. Another way is you can triy to use SQL Server 2005 SSMS to connect to SQL Server 2005.
More information about configuration requirement to run T-SQL debugger as below, please refer:
There are no configuration requirements to run the Transact-SQL debugger when SQL Server Management Studio is running on the same computer as the instance of the SQL Server Database Engine. However, to run the Transact-SQL debugger when SQL Server Management
Studio is running on a different computer from the instance of the Database Engine, you must enable program and port exceptions by using the Windows Firewall Control Panel application on both computers.
On the computer that is running the instance of the Database Engine, in Windows Firewall, specify the following information:
•Add TCP port 135 to the exceptions list.
•Add the program sqlservr.exe to the exceptions list. By default, sqlservr.exe is installed in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.InstanceName\MSSQL\Binn, where InstanceName is MSSQLSERVER for the default instance, and the instance name for
any named instance.
•If the domain policy requires network communications to be done through IPsec, you must also add UDP port 4500 and UDP port 500 to the exception list.
On the computer that is running SQL Server Management Studio, in Windows Firewall, specify the following information:
•Add TCP port 135 to the exceptions list.
•Add program ssms.exe (SQL Server Management Studio) to the exceptions list. By default, ssms.exe is installed in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Binn\VSShell\Common7\IDE.
Hope it is helpful.
