Is the 2.1.2 update safe ?

I'm tired of updating and than downgrading again.
Can some of the brave people please post if this update actually fixed bugs, or introduced more bugs (like the last few updates did).
I'm constantly in the middle of deadlines, hence my fear of updating. But I really want to try this one.
The reason is that one bug introduced earlier, where the image previews in the import dialog only show dotted lines, is litterarly taking me hours to process and sort my everydays work.
I'm preparing to switch to a more serious system, but in the meantime if apple managed to fix this nasty thing, it might speed up my work again.

Try deleting the preferences file. If that doesn't work, delete the folder ~/Library/Application Support/Aperture but note that this will delete any export/metadata/naming/watermark/shortcut etc. presets that you have created.

Is the 01-10-2006 updater safe yet?

Back when the 01-10-2006 updater came out, I was one of the people who had major issues with it. My iPod wouldn't connect to my computer; neither iTunes nor my computer would recognize it.
Two new iTunes versions have been released since then, and on a hunch, I plugged the iPod in, and amazingly, it worked. I did a complete system restore, since I had (or at least I assume it was me) corrupted many files on the iPod when I was struggling to get it to connect previously (pulling it out while it was still connected since it wouldn't stop trying to connect, etc).
The iPod is now plugged in to the wall, totally back at factory settings. My question is: with the new iTunes versions, is it safe to use the 01-10-2006 updater now? Or will I only have the same problems all over again if I stick it back on?
Should I put on the 6-26-2005 updater instead? My only problem with this is that the file on my computer (Start - Program Files - iPod - 6-26-2006) doesn't seem to work when I open it on my computer ("iPod Manager Internal Error"), but the one prior to that, the 7-15-2004 update, seems to be functioning. Can I even redownload the 6-26-2005 update anywhere else on the internet?
One last question - I have 8000+ songs for my 40gig iPod...will putting them all back on at once damage it? I've noticed it's become really hot when I put on 1000 songs at one time in the past.

I don't know why you were having a problem with 3 and 10.6.4. I had no significant problems with this combination, especially with the updates to 3. Now, with 3.1, things are much swifter.
I did have one problem, which you can read about at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2620852&tstart=0. This was to do with my Photo sync using iTunes and my iPod Touch. This problem surfaced after I installed 3.1, but I don't know if it was related. In all other respects, 3.1 seems to rock.

It is very rare to lose information when upgrading. Nonetheless, sensible people always have their information backed up, whether or not they are doing an upgrade. With a proper back up, it's very simple to restore all of your information should something go wrong.
That being said, a bigger issue is, will you like iOS 7? If at all possible, you should spend some time with it, either on a friend's phone or at a store. You should also consider that the iPhone 4 is the oldest phone that will run iOS 7 and it may not run it as well as an iPhone 5.

I have just updated to this BIOS, still on Win 8.1 but preparing for move to Win 10. Following update to 9ECN40WW, mostly working OK, except the browser. I use 64 bit browser Cyberfox, and I am now missing the browser box, I do have the search box, and on the download arrow, it does not show coloured (green) as files are downloaded. Also, when I look at customising the toolbar, (additional tools and features), that screen now is completely blank. I have cleared cache, and reinstalled browser, but this has not corrected the problem. Is there a bug in BIOS 9ECN40WW? How do II find and load a previous BIOS, as a search seems to display only the currently available BIOS? Also how do I communicate this to Lenovo, as they seem not to answer their support phone linein the UK?

I used firefox 95% of the time. I updated to the 4.0 version it stated in the popup box they did not support AVG and have plugins. After that I had a viruses and paid to them removed.If I begin using firefox again and AVG is my computer safe from viruses?

I continued using AVG, Malwarebytes' anti-malware and CCleaner. I discontinued using firefox and began using IE. What is your relationship with AVG? Is it still compatible with firefox?

Firefox 10 has many problems and I found the solution did an update to firefox 11 beta and so far everything is working well.

Is the latest ThinkVantage System Update safe to use?

I just reinstalled the factory version of XP onto my T60. Then I downloaded and ran the latest ThinkVantage System Update, and there were maybe 20 or 30 updates that I can install. Some of those updates require you to uninstall your current version, and others need to be installed in a certain order. Can TVSU handle all that, or should I try to install the updates manually? Someone was saying that an older version of TVSU doesn't install things in the correct order.

If I were you I would install the latest version of system update first and then run it to install available packages.

I have an iMac G4 PowerPC with OS 10.5.? The OS10.5.8 update failed. Now get blue screen and error-can't find Intel Power Manager. What now??

Now I get the blue screen. Startup with 'V' pressed shows multiple lines saying: error-can't find IntelCPU Power Manager. What now?? I reset PRAM, I think.....?????

I am concerned that you might have applied a system updated intended for an Intel iMac, while you have a PPC (non-Intel) iMac. Your PPC OS should not be looking for an "IntelCPU Power Manager."
Have you tried booting from the 10.5 install DVD/CD and repairing the hard drive, plus repairing permissions?
If you done the repairs mentioned above, and your problem still persists, you can also try doing a safe boot. (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455 ) Then, if none of these things worked, if I were in your shoes (it's hard to diagnose these things without being there in person) I would first check that there is adequate disk space, then I would boot from the 10.5 DVD/CD install disk and reinstall the operating system. There is an option to do an archive and install preserving user files/settings, that would be the option you want, as it will save your files but install a new OS. Make sure you have a good backup of your files first. If you do not have one, use "target mode" to copy all your files before embarking on an new OS install. Assuming that you do succeed with this install, then use Software Update to get the right updates for your iMac.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.

5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

We have SolMan with JAVA as Add in . Now during the JSPM Launch the JSPM Aborts with the Err Messages as shown :

Now , this JCOLDAPI is Java RFC Connector with User PORTALADMIN and at the ABAP Side we see that the J2EE_ADMIN pwd was changed by this PORTALADMIN !! We had at the same time stamp, the message in the log file of the JSPM that credential supplied to log in to J2EE Engine is not valid ( 'cause, the PORTALADMIN had changed the PW
of the J2EE_ADMIN ) - While attempting to Launch the JSPM for JAVA Patches > It aborts with the same above message !!
Half of the SW Comp were updated and rest half aborts repeatedly with the above message.
Same way the Vis Admin won't start with the msg that Credential to connect J2EE is not valid. Although there was no change at the Config Tool Secure Store > J2EE Admin and SAPSR3DB passwords !!
I have changed both the J2EE_ADMIN and the PORTAL ADMIN to the User Type Service User ( note 622464 ) ..have
kept the same pw at ABAP and configtool secure store. But the java is not coming up neither through SMICM nor through the startsap j2ee command as SMPADM.
i.e. it would comeup only in SAFE Mode !!
This JCOLDAPI RFC Java Connector 's PORTALADMIN has several rights at the ABAP Side and is used for EWA Purpose.
JAVA is running in SAFE mode and no matter how many time I try at the config tool Side to bring it in normal mode it is not swithcing to normal mode > I disble the safe mode at the ConfigTool Side > Apply > Save . > Restart the JAVA through the jcmon > shutdown and restart cluster under #10 Cluster Admin Menu > it is coming up only in SAFE mode again with the abvoe error message !!! Restart through the SMICM don't even work at all !!. Also, the system is slow ..even to come in safe
mode JAVA takes about 45 minutes !!!
Also, since the JAVA is coming up only in safe mode the SLD and the browser page is not available. The jcomon displays the instance status as ' Synchronizing Binaries' since
last 20 hours ..this means that the instance is in hang state.
Any idea how to solve this problem ?

What is the best procedure to update from Leopard (or Snow Leopard) to Mavericks?

The pacient:
Macbook Pro A1278
Running 10.5.8 -- but have an Update DVD to 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
Got slower in start-up
Very slow in power-off (takes lot of time on shut-down!)
What is the BEST procedure to update it from Leopard to Mavericks?
A) update & clean
Backup to Time Machine (in Leopard)
Update from 10.5.8 to 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
Update 10.6 to 10.6.8
Donwnload and Update to Maverics
Do any kind of clean to increase speed in start-up / shut-down - Any suggestions?

B) fresh install & update & recover Time Machine

Reinstall a fresh 10.5.8 (Leopard) - should increase speed in start-up / shut-down ??

PS. Aditional suggestions to make a faster boot / power-down , before or after updating are very welcome ;!)

Go to  Menu > About this Mac > and tell us Version, Processor & Memory specs on your Mac. Also available hard disk space, by choosing your Macintosh HD and "Get Info" (cmd-i)
If you're having issues now with slow sratup and shutdown, it's probably a third party item. If it is, then it may limited to your user account. If that's the case and you do a clean install, then migrate you will wind up migrating it right back.
The first thing to check would be to boot into your Guest account and test, or try starting in Safe Mode and see if the problem still occurs?
Restart holding the "shift" key.
(Expect it to take longer to start this way because it runs a directory check first.)
If this works look in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login items and delete any third party login items.
Also look in /Library/Startup Items. Nothing is put in that folder by default, so anything in there is yours. Then log out and back in or restart and test.
If the problem is sorted, be sure to make a new backup before proceeding. Since the problem is sorted and you have a backup without the offending items, then there's no reason not to use the simple upgrade method you outlined in A. With the exception of "cleaning". The only cleaning your Mac should need is with a soft cloth. Stay away from so-called cleaning/optomizing utilities.

I cant download the apple loops and updates for garageband. It keeps saying error occurred while downloading the updates (102). I dont know what to do?

It might be a transitory problem with too much traffic at the AppStore. Try again later.
Or you may have firewalls or Antivirus filters interfering, or other non-standard start-up items and preferences panes. If the error persists, boot into Safe Mode and try to update in this mode, see:
Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode
This will prevent non-standard start-up items, kernel extensions, etc from being loaded and interfering.

I have a 2008 imac with snow leopard. i installed update 10.9.3 not realizing it's best for Maverick's users. Now my Itunes 11.2.2 won't burn playlists to CD.   Anyone else with this problem? CAn I uninstall the 10.9.3 update?

If you have your old system backed up then erase the drive and restore your backup. If you don't have a backup then backup your entire Home folder. Erase the drive and install Snow Leopard after which you can restore your Home folder from the backup.
Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
     1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
         with your computer. Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
         After the chime press and hold down the "C" key. Release the key when you see
         a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
     2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
         button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
         After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
         size.) Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Set the number of
         partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
         and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
         (Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
     3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed
         with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
     4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
         Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
         username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
         Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
         install of OS X. You can now begin the update process by opening Software
         Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Or you can:
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
    b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
     Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
     COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
     computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
     screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
     Reinstall the 10.9.3 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 Update (Combo).
4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.3 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 Update (Combo).
