Is the Asus G60VX about to be replaced by a new model? Possibly G51J?

I've been interested in getting an Asus G series for about 5 months now. My birthday is coming up friday and I will be able to pick out a laptop to get. At first I wanted the G51, which was $999 about 5 months ago, but about a month or two after I first saw it, when Windows 7 came out, the G51 dropped to $949 and the G60 came out at $999. Some weird things are going on with the G60 since its launch though. First of all, Asus' website has no knowledge of the G60, and no other place sells it but Best Buy. After doing some research I got the answer that the laptop was made specifically for Best Buy, which is why its sold no where else. Ok, thats fine. But then about 3 weeks ago the G60 dissappeared off of the online best buy site. I called the website customer service and they told me that the last date they would have any G60's would be in the beginning of January. So I figured, ok, maybe a new ones coming out. Who knows? But then a week later it was back on the Best Buy website. So I was confused. But whatever. Then I noticed 2 days ago that the G60 has dropped down in price to $949. ( I look at it alot incase you cant tell. ) which is what the G51 did soon before it was phased out. Now that its almost time to get my laptop, I'm worried that soon after there will be a new G series with the i7 processor, ddr3 ram and a higher resolution, possibly the G51J (Which is the same thing as the G60, looks and all, but with the i7, ddr3 and higher res) will be available at Best Buy to take its place, and at the price of $999 or something little over $1000. Does anyone have information, advice or help they can offer to help me decide if I should get this computer friday or wait for possibly an updated version in the beginning of January? I guess this is a question more for the moderators. But any and all advice is welcome.

that's the thing about laptops thought. about every 6 months the price will drop 100.

  • Uses for old iPhone when it has been replaced with a new model

Wondering what, if anything, I can do with my first generation iPhone now that I've upgraded to the 3GS. Can I still use the old phone sort of like I would an iPod Touch? Can I synch my music and/or photos with both iPhones - with the same Mac computer? If so, do I need to (or should I) remove the SIM card in the older iPhone? If it is an issue, I have 3 Mac computers in the house, so I could synch the iPhones with different Macs... Any ideas?

" Can I still use the old phone sort of like I would an iPod Touch?"
Asked and answered everyday, several times today. Yes. Leave the SIM in it.
The forum search bar is on the right side of this page.
You can sync as many devices as you like to one machine.

Back up all data before proceeding.
Launch the Font Book application and validate all fonts. You must select the fonts in order to validate them. See the built-in help and this support article for instructions. If Font Book finds any issues, resolve them.
Start up in safe mode to rebuild the font caches. Restart as usual and test.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t start in safe mode. In that case, ask for instructions.
If you still have problems, then from the Font Book menu bar, select
              File ▹ Restore Standard Fonts...
You'll be prompted to confirm, and then to enter your administrator login password.
Also note that if you deactivate or remove any built-in fonts, for instance by using a third-party font manager, the system may become unstable.

  • How do I go about getting a replacement for my earbuds at the apple store?

I just got my iPhone 6 and when I went to listen to my music my earbuds was not working in the left ear. I tried with my macbook pro and the problem was still there. I was told once before that my earbuds will be covered by the warranty, now I want to know how to go about getting them replaced?

Bring them into the store.  Bring the phone along too.  That's all you need to do.

If your iPod Touch, iPhone, or iPad is Broken
Apple does not fix iDevices. Instead, they exchange yours for a refurbished or new replacement depending upon the age of your device and refurbished inventories. On rare occasions when there are no longer refurbished units for your older model, they may replace it with the next newer model.
ATTN: Beginning July 2013 Apple Stores are now equipped to do screen repairs/replacements in-house on iPhone 5s. In some cases while you wait. According to Apple this is the beginning of equipping Apple Stores with the resources needed to do most repairs for iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches that would not require major replacements. Later in the year the services may be extended as Apple Stores become equipped and staffed with the proper repair expertise. So, if you need a screen repaired or a broken screen replaced or have your stuck Home button fixed, call your local Apple Store to see if they are now doing these in-house.

  • I just got the Ipod nano about 3 weeks ago. It worked great up untill today. It would not turn on, or connect to my computer. I called the apple company, and the said it was defaulted, and to send it in and they would replace it. Will I get a new one?

I just got the ipod nano about 3 weeks ago. It worked great up untill today. It would not turn on, or connect into my computer. I took it back to best buy and they said it had a defulted battery, and that I needed to call the company. So I did and they had me send it in. Will they send me a new ipod, or a refurbished one. I havn't even had the ipod long enough, and I paid good money for it. I'm hoping to get a new one, because it wasn't my fault.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Best Buy baited me and switched up on the ASUS G74SX-BBK9 vs. the BBK11 - not cool!

My question to Best Buy is - Have things gotten so bad in your business that you have to resort to what amounts to bait and switch tactics to get people into your stores?
I am a long time customer and Rewards Zone member. Between my family and my extended family I would say I have an impact on 7 to 10K in Best  Buy business annually (conservative estimate really) as the family tech guru. Unfortunately more often than not I find BEST Buy, really isn't in the long run and I find that sad. Let me give you an example:
I have been following the ASUS G73 and now G74 laptops for the past couple years. I have been interested in getting one because I am a middle aged performance computer nut and will not settle for sub-standard performance even in my portable computer. The ASUS G74SX-BBK9 caught my eye and I went down to the local Best Buy with cash in my pocket to pick one up. When I arrived I learned that the BBK9 is nearly impossible to find but I am in luck, it has been replaced by the BBK11 and it is in stock!. Upon closer inspection I learn that the "new" BBK11 is really the same computer as the BBK9 with a low performance hard drive AND A HIGHER PRICE!!! Please allow me a moment to inform you that when it comes to IT hardware it does not INCREASE in value as the model ages, it actually LOSES value. And it is crystal clear to me that Best Buy thinks:
    1. They can pull the ole switcheroo and no one will notice.
    2. The customer is stupid and has more money than brains.
    3. Specs are meaningless in high performance computer hardware.
4 or all of the above!
But what really got to me was the attitude of the staff. I asked if they could help me locate a BBK9 and I would buy it that second. After a couple minutes of a passive search they said it was impossible to find. Strangely enough it is on the Best Buy site - granted it is now listed as an Outlet item, but it clearly is available somewhere.
It does not make any sense to pay more for less and that makes me sick really. But I will be traveling for 10 days and don't have time to do an online order so I offered to buy a BBK11 but at a slightly better price than the $1249 it was listed at. Being completely fair - I would pay $1249 for a BBK9 in a microsecond if I could find one!!! But alas it has been marked down $70 and is only available in stores if you win the lottery and can find one. I am guessing it is right next the the unicorns and pot of gold at the base of a rainbow in the software section!! Are you starting to understand why this feels like a bait and switch?? The website says it exists, but good luck finding one - just feels like a foot traffic in the store come-on to me.
After a few minutes the lady I spoke with came back from a visit with a supervisor and said, "the price that is on it now, is the price it sells for and there is nothing we can do, and we have nothing else to talk about." I agreed that she was right about one thing - we have nothing else to talk about and I left feeling like an idiot for even walking into the store in the first place. A word of advice from a customer service manger - making your customers feel like idiots is not the way to build a business that will last. It is the way to alienate your customers and ruin your brand reputation in the long run.
Good luck and I hope you survive - but I think you are way off track........

So you are expecting for BBY to stock a discontinued model?
I agree that Asus dropped the ball. They did make an inferior "new" product. But that's not BBYs fault. There are probably a few BBK9s out there, hence why it's still on the website but online stock checks aren't 100% reliable.
If I was BBY I wouldn't have budged on the price either. They are just a middle man and because you want to buy it for less just means they will see even less profit on a razor thin margin to begin with.
This is far from bait and switch as it wasn't advertised, Wasn't put on an unbelievable sale, nor did they upsell you to another product. You researched what you wanted, thought you found it at BBY and when they didn't have an outdated model in stock then the next model was suggested I assume.

  • I had an Intel-iMac fried by lightening. UPS, surge protectors but it happened as I was reaching to unplug.  Cold now.  Could it just be the power supply?  Can I replace that myself?

This is the full question since I couldn't get it all in the box.
I have some complex questions regarding an iMac, a Time-Machine backup, and iTunes on an iPod.
I live about halfway up an extinct volcano about 12 miles north of San Jose Costa Rica.  Some months ago, we had a thunderstorm and as I reached to unplug my computers lightening struck about 50 meters from my house.  I had an iMac with a 3-Tb external backup drive, a PC laptop and a laser printer on the same power strip.  There was a definite surge and the light brighten and then power was lost for a few minutes.
When power was restored, the PC and the laser printer seemed to work fine but the iMac was cold.
First questions:  Is is possible that the power supply was fried and not other essential parts?  Would it be worthwhile to replace the power supply?  Can I, with limited experience and tools do it or need I take it to a technician?  My concern is that if the hard-drive is good, there is personal information on it that I don't want to risk.
Next question:  Do I need to replace the hard-drive before taking it for service?  How hard is that, can I do it? I have seen videos of the drive replacement on-line.
Those are my iMac questions, now the questions about backup restoration.
If there is a saving grace with this it is that the Time-Machine backup seems fine although I have only accessed the data through Finder.  I replaced the iMac with a Macbook Air with significantly less mass storage and I can't just move files to the Macbook.  My problem is that I have an iTunes library of some 10,000 songs on the backup and until recently on a 160 Gb iPod which was old and it crashed.  I have replaced the iPod but have not tried to restore the iTunes library to it because of my confusion about how to do that.  Can anyone tell me how I might do that or give me any insight into the process?
Thanks for any help you can give.

Quite possible, but working on iMacs is not easy, & PSU might be prohibitive.
Hopefully the Drive might have info on it, but even pulling that out can be a chore.

  • Can anyone help me solve the problem of text displaying very rough on my new ASUS PA279Q display monitor running off my MacBook Pro?

This is regarding a brand new ASUS PA 279Q, 2560 x 1440 IPS monitor. I'm connected via mini display port (into thunderbolt port on MacBook Pro) to display port on ASUS monitor; using cable ASUS included with the monitor. Mid 2012 MacBook Pro…full specs at bottom of this post.
I have resolution set at 2560 x 1440 which is the native resolution according to the ASUS spec. I tried the other resolutions available in my System Preferences and text displayed rough with those settings too. I've tried adjusting contrast, brightness and sharpness via the ASUS control panel and didn't solve the problem. Also tried calibrating via Mac's system preferences/display and that did not improve text display either. All the text on this monitor (no matter what software I launch, Finder, InDesign, Illustrator, MS Word, Excel, VMWare Windows XP, Windows versions of Word, Excel, Acrobat, etc, all are consistently rendering text the same way ---  ROUGH and with "HALOS" around each letter.
All point sizes of text and at various scales, display very rough on the screen. (My comparison is the retina display of my MBP and a Thunderbolt…so those two displays are my expectations.) I'm using the same MBP for both a Thunderbolt display (at work) and this ASUS at my home office.
On the ASUS it's not as noticeable when the text is on white backgrounds, but I'm a graphic designer and compose images with text all day everyday. Not to mention the specs on this ASUS PA279Q indicate it's built for the professional so I would expect better text rendering. I haven't even addressed color calibration and balance yet, because that won't matter to me if the text won't display any better than it is now.
I was so hopeful after researching all the specs on this monitor it would be a viable alternative to the glossy display of the Thunderbolt display. (Which, I do love the Thunderbolt display for it's clarity and how it displays crisp, clean text at all sizes. (This ASUS actually displays text decently if I increase the text so each letter is about 4" high. Which is pointless for practical purposes -- that'd be like doing page layout through a microscope!)
I kept holding off on getting a monitor for the home office thinking the Thunderbolt would be updated soon. I'd be sick if I dropped a grand on piece of 2011 technology only to learn a few days later an updated Thunderbolt display hit the market! Not to mention, I'm praying Apple comes out with a less reflective Thunderbolt display. The glare and reflection is the main reason I looked elsewhere for a large monitor; hence my asking for help. Hoping the ASUS text display issue can be worked out. My expectation is for it to display like the MBP retina and Thunderbolt display text. That possible?
Alternatively, I guess I could do the Apple Refurb Thunderbolt at $799. And see if there's a decent aftermarket anti-glare I could stick on it?
Thanks for reading my post. Hope someone can help; offer any suggestions? Words or wisdom?
Has anyone else had similar issues and figured out a resolution? Help!
    MacBook Pro

    8GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    OS X 10.8.5

    ASUS PA279Q

I uninstalled those two items. It still runs slow on start-up and when opening safari, firefox, iphoto, itunes, etc. It's not snappy like it used to be. Any other ideas? Thanks.

  • Arch on the Asus 900 (EEE PC)

Firstly, I'd like to ask if anyone's had any success with installing arch on the asus 900 and if the steps they took while doing it differed from those in the threads/guide regarding the 700 found on these pages.
Secondly, I've been poking around with arch trying to get everything (need before greed) working. I currently have gotten both the wired and the wireless network working, proper graphics and most of the configuration has also been done, so I'm kind of settled in now. At the moment I'm just missing the sound card, webcam and proper acpi support. I've been trying to get the 2.6.25.2 kernel running, hoping that it will solve some issues with the asus acpi support but haven't been able to boot it since I don't have an initramfs/initrd-fle that I can use.
    Does anyone have any pointers?
    Cheers /emilIO

B wrote:I know Asus themselves released some ACPI code for those EEE PCs ...
It's true that they have, but I can't even download it since the link is broken . I did however manage to download some of the eee packages for arch posted by people on the forums but didn't have any success since I kept getting error messages saying that stuff in /proc/acpi/asus/ couldn't be found. I figured that I needed the asus acpi module for laptops that is included in the kernel so I went about getting my hands on the 2.6.25.2 kernel. After compiling the bzImage, modules and installing the modules the kernel paniced during boot-up. I resolved this issue by compiling in the drivers for the SSD. Now it started panicing about /lib/modules/2.6.25.2-ARCH/modules.dep, saying that the file isn't there, only it IS! So I'm kind of confused now, any tips?

  • Logicboard replacement came with new serial that stops me from connecting w iMessage and FaceTime. Applecare ran out and now I am sure it is this issue... How can I get apple to honor the serial mess up?

The story is that I have an imac i7 that was still under Applecare when the logicboard coraked.
I brought it in for repair and got it back. Somehow imessage and facetime would never connect anymore and come up with connection errors yet everything else worked. I tried all tens or hundreds of suggestions over hte last few months and nothing worked.
So I resorted to a clean hard drive repartitioning and install of Mountain Lion.
To my surprise: it sill did not work.
That;s when I found an obscure post that I am quite certain is the problem: the poster had the exact some symptoms I had and NOTHING worked. Hrs of phone support etc. Until it dawned on him that he had a logic board replacement after which the issue occurred. He found that his serial was no longer the same as the original item and came up as invalid on the apple website and was not listed in the "About" of his iMac.
I immediately recognized the recent support symptom and motherboard replacement and checked the rest. And behold it is all exactly as he said. He had to bring it back to the service center and they put the original serial back in and everything worked again.
Here is my problem: months of troubleshooting have passed and my iMac went out of Applecare warranty. Support does not warrant an exception for the serial online and the service center wants to get paid    I am not wealthy. This computer is my life and I need them to change the serial back to what it was when I purchased the machine. Can someone suggest how I get help. Apple is acting like M-soft in this respect.

The only people who can possibly assist you with this is Apple Customer Relations, call your local Apple contact number and ask for Customer Relations then explain your situation clearly and politely (be firm but don't rant).
You might want to investiage what the local laws are regarding defective goods and 'fit for use' definitions on warranties etc. Consumer Protection can be a useful tool to use or bargain with if needed ...
