Is the 'jdbc.drivers' system property official?

Hi, i've just read the Java Technology Fundamentals Newsletter, June issue. They mention a way to load a JDBC driver using the 'jdbc.drivers' system property. But i wonder if this is an official system property because i can't find it in the docs (JDBC specification, API docs). Does somebody know, where this system property is specified?
Thanks in advance.
Markus

This is an extract form JavaDocs on java.sql.DriverManger:
public class DriverManager
extends Object
The basic service for managing a set of JDBC drivers.
NOTE: The DataSource interface, new in the JDBC 2.0 API, provides another way to connect to a data source. The use of a DataSource object is the preferred means of connecting to a data source.
As part of its initialization, the DriverManager class will attempt to load the driver classes referenced in the "jdbc.drivers" system property. This allows a user to customize the JDBC Drivers used by their applications. For example in your ~/.hotjava/properties file you might specify:
jdbc.drivers=foo.bah.Driver:wombat.sql.Driver:bad.taste.ourDriver
A program can also explicitly load JDBC drivers at any time. For example, the my.sql.Driver is loaded with the following statement:
Class.forName("my.sql.Driver");

  • Installing the jdbc drivers

    Hello Guys:
    I am new to Oracle Application DBA stuff and here is what I have to do now.
    I need to install the jdbc drivers in our oracle financials UAT.
    Here is what I heard from our Oracle support:
    ANSWER
    ======
    The Patch #4159795 status is Deleted, indicates that the patch has been deleted from the patch repository. This usually occurs when the patch has been obsoleted.
    However, this bug (BUG:4159795) has been fixed in version 10.2 which means it's solved in the latest releases.
    The JDBC drivers are certified to work with the currently supported versions of the Oracle Database. For example, the JDBC Thin drivers in Oracle Database 10g a re certified to work with the 9.2.x, 9.0.1.x, and 8.1.7 Oracle Database releases.
    However, they are not certified to work with older, unsupported database releases, such as 8.0.x and 7.x.

    Now please tell me what needs to be done. Should i install this on the application server or on the database server. If any one could give me a heads or give me pointers to documents it will be great.
    Regards,
    Bala

    If you are using Oracle 11i, the JDBC drivers are normally upgraded via a patch during a JDK upgrade (1.3.1, or 1.4.2, or 1.5.0). I am pretty sure the note referenced by the analyst has no relevance to Oracle EBS.

  • The File class ignores the file.separator system property?

    I am saving the pathname of a file to a String using:
    String pathString = myfile.getAbsolutePath();
    This gives me e.g. "D:\Java\Projects\myfile.txt" on Windows XP
    If I want to save this value to a properties file, then load it in a new invocation of the program, this string will not be recognised as a valid pathname because of the backslashes.
    So I want to use forward slashes as the file separator char.
    I tried:
    System.setProperty("file.separator","/");
    However, this setting seems to be ignored by the File class, as I still get the same string with backslashes from the getAbsolutePath() method.
    Can anyone help please?

    Yeah... I've used that before. Never recalled having problems. I can't, however, recall if there were file paths saved.
    Just tested with this:
    import java.io.*;
    import java.util.*;
    public class Props {
         public static void main(String[] args) {
              try {
                   Properties p1 = new Properties();
                   p1.put("file", new File("C:\\test\\Props.java").getAbsolutePath());
                   FileOutputStream out = new FileOutputStream("Props.properties");
                   p1.store(out, null);
                   out.close();
                   FileInputStream in = new FileInputStream("Props.properties");
                   Properties p2 = new Properties();
                   p2.load(in);
                   System.out.println("p1: " + p1.getProperty("file"));
                   System.out.println("p2: " + p2.getProperty("file"));
              } catch(Exception e) {
                   e.printStackTrace();

  • Program to list JDBC drivers

    Hi everyone,
    I use the following code to list JDBC drivers on my system.
    private static void listDrivers() {
    //Get all the JDBC drivers
    Enumeration<Driver> driverList = DriverManager.getDrivers();
    //print out all the drivers using a loop
    while (driverList.hasMoreElements()) {
    Driver jdbcDriver = (Driver)driverList.nextElement();
    System.out.println("JDBC Driver: " + jdbcDriver);
    It lists JDBC-ODBC bridge:
    JDBC Driver: sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver@19efb05
    After I installed Microsoft SQL Server JDBC driver. I ran the above program again. Expecting it would return this new driver as well. But, the output is still the same.
    Why??? What did I do wrong? How do I get the program to list all the JDBC drivers on my system?
    Thanks in advance for your help!

    Where you went wrong was in assuming that just having a jar somewhere on your computer will automatically put it on the classpath of your little application.
    Or maybe you went wrong in assuming that jdbc magically detects any jar anywhere on your computer that has a driver in it without being told where to look for that jar.Well, there's that. But, there is also the fact,OP, that the API docs says that the method getDrivers returns all currently loaded Drivers. In other words, OP, even if the jar is on your Classpath, getDrivers won't list it until you've done Class.forName("DriverClass") or DriverManager.registerDriver("DriverClass").
    IOW, OP, read the API docs.
    Edit: And, no, there is no Class/method (AFAIK) that will search your classpath for any/all possible Driver classes.

  • In the rwb adapter monitoring the JDBC Adapter always grey

    Hi all
    I try to use JDBC Adapter in XI 3.0 sp14.
    First I deploy the MS SqlServer JDBC by SDM RemoteGui.I can see the deployed JDBC package in \j2ee\cluster\server0\bin\ext\com.sap.aii.af.jmsproviderlib.
    Then I create a communication Channel using JDBC 2.0 in a Business System and active the configuration.
    But when I monitor JDBC Adapter in the rwb, I find the JDBC Adapter is always grey.In the \server0\log\services\com.sap.aii.adapter.jdbc.svc, no log shows the jdbc adapter is initial.
    So what extended configuration shall i do.
    Thanks in advanced

    hi Alessandro,ravi:
    Thanks for your reply. I will describe detail.
    I use a file adapter as a sender and use a JDBC adapter as a receiver.
    In the sxmb_moni I find the processed message status is successful.
    So I think the integration server works fine.
    In the message monitoring, the message is waiting status.
    If I change the receiver adapter to file adapter.
    It works fine.So I think the process config is fine and the itegration server works fine. the error is in the receiver JDBC adapter side.
    I check the default trace, <b>there is error logs</b>:

  • Upgrade MS SQL 2005 platform to MS SQL 2008 - Update the JDBC driver...

    Hello to all,
    This is the second post that I created reporting this error because in the first one I open this message in group of "SAP on SQL Server" but without any kind of help from community:
    My problem is...
    I´m planning to do an upgrade of a sap system (SAP ECC 6.0) from SQL Server 2005 to a SQL Server 2008 but I´m facing with a little problem. This system has two stacks - ABAP + JAVA - and because of that the Upgrade Guide to MS SQL Server 2008 describe which are the requirements for this upgrade DB platform, and one of them is this:
    "If you use a Java system, you have updated the JDBC driver as described in SAP Note 639702"
    ... the updated of JDBC driver when we have in system a Java part, like it has in this case! But I´m with a serious problems to find in SAP System Files in Windows 2003 Server the four files that is mentioned in that note 639702. I can´t find it anywhere... in note says:
    Depending on the SAP release and the system configuration, the driver files base.jar, util.jar, sqlserver.jar, and spy.jar are available in an installed system at:
    (NetWeaver'04, Java:) usrsap<SAP SID>JC<InstanceNumber>j2eejdbc
    (NetWeaver'04, ABAP+Java:) usrsap<SAP SID>DVEBMGS<InstanceNumber>j2eejdbc
    (NetWeaver 2004s:) usrsap<SAPSID>SYSexe<NUC|UC>Platformmssjdbc
    But... still I didn´t find them! I also read other note 1109274 - New JDBC driver for NetWeaver 7.0 and higher but even so I still can´t find it!
    Can you help me to find this files on my operation system? I have to update that JDBC... but of course for this task I have to find it first!!!
    Best regards,
    João Dimas - Portugal

    Hi,
    Have you considered the possibility that the directory that was supposed to contain the jdbc drivers has been replaced by a recent kernel upgrade and you never noticed?
    Anyway, looking forward, put in a new set of JDBC drivers in the correct location.
    Also, with reference to the following point from the first note:
    Check your JDBC Driver version before you download it. To do this, unpack the attached check tool SAPCheckVersion in the relevant JDBC directory (refer to the previous paragraph). Then open a command prompt there and execute the following command:
    SAPCheckVersion.cmd <server name> <username> <password>
    Replace <server name> with the name of the database server, <username> and <password> with the logon data of an SQL user (for example, sa or SAP<SID>DB). If you call SAPCheckVersion.cmd without a parameter, the system displays detailed help. The tool supports both DataDirect and Microsoft drivers.
    *The download name tells you which version of the driver you need to download from SAP Service Marketplace.*
    Run this SAPCheckVersion and find out which drivers you need to download and then download them and use them.

  • Updating JDBC Drivers

    Hi,
    I´m in the middle of a SAP Portal installation on AIX with ORACLE and just followed the ORACLE Interim Patches installation but in one of them there is a note to follow to update the JDBC drivers outside the $ORACLE_HOME/jdbc/lib directory but it does not says how to update them, however the note asks to download a classes12.jar and ojdbc14.jar files.
    The question is how do I update the JDBC drivers in this step? is it just look for all classes12.jar and ojdbc14.jar files in my system and replace them with the new ones I just downloaded?(this .jar files are also in this directory .patch_storage/../../ but I guess those are for the rollback of the Interim patch so I wont touch those)
    Thanx in Advanced!!
    Gerardo J

    Hi Geraldo,
    well that would be a valid but brute force approach.
    Since most applications that use a JDBC driver either need to get the exact driver location specified or look it up via their classpath you could also just update the drivers that you know you need to upgrade.
    Anyhow there's nothing wrong in just replacing what you find

    Where can a person download the JDBC Drivers (CLASSES12.ZIP ORA)

    Connie

    if you have oracle 8i server you will find the classes12.zip(thin jdbc drivers )in the [ORAHOME]/jdbc/lib directory. You have to added the zip to the classpath in the jserv.properties file eg. wrapper.classpath=D:\oracle\ora81\jdbc\lib\classes12.zip(if you orahome is D:\oracle\ora81.)
    otherwise for just using the java classes for compiling and running in the consile you have to set the classpath of classes12.zip in your system environment.

    Don't know, but a search for JDBC, with System files included, should give you the answer.

  • Thin JDBC Drivers Insert Strings Incorrectly

    Can anyone confirm or deny this.
    I've downloaded the latest Oracle 8i JDBC drivers. If I create a table:
    CREATE TABLE Moo (stringCol VARCHAR(10) NOT NULL);
    and I try to insert an empty String into Moo.stringCol, the JDBC drivers try to insert Null instead! Yet if I try and insert a String of one character in length, it inserts it correctly.
    Clearly it would seem the JDBC drivers are at fault.
    Anyone come across this?

    No, the drivers are performing correctly. In Oracle, an empty string in a varchar or varchar2 column is considered NULL. Regardless of what protocol or language you use to access the database, this will hold true.

    I've developed a application which uses internally my own jdbc-driver.
    After months of really hard work on tomcat (the application works fine) I've tried migrate it to weblogic.
    But ...
    In weblogic seems mandatory to put the jdbc drivers out of the war!!!. Brilliant!!!
    If I move the driver out, I need move the 50% of the application out, also!
    If I move part of the application out, nothing works, because... are the class loaders distinct?. And I'll need to do a lot of extra work because one day one weblogic architect had a great great inspiration.
    In the future I'll suggest to my customers to run and not stop when they listen the WEBLOGIC word.

  • Need information on Weblogic JDBC drivers

    Hi,
    I have been using Weblogic 8.1 sp5 with oracle version -Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.4.0 - 64bit Production.
    Lately i have observed the below error:-
    <Jun 2, 2009 9:56:58 PM MEST> <Error> <JDBC> <BEA-001112> <Test "SELECT 1 FROM DUAL" set up for pool "WIS03 JDBC Connection Pool" failed with exception: "java.sql.SQLException: OALL8 is in an inconsistent state.".>
    This may be linked to the JDBC drivers used with weblogic.
    At weblogic console i can see the list of drivers as - Oracle Driver (Thin) Versions.9.0.1,9.2.0,10
    Is this driver good for the Oracle version 10 g?
    I am clueless for the above exception. Please suggest.
    Thanks & Regards

    Thanks Joe.
    I have found the latest ojdbc.jar, below are the detials mentioned about this jar in the manifest.mf:-
    Oracle Database 10g Release 2 (10.2.0.4) JDBC Drivers
    Specification-Title: Oracle JDBC driver classes for use with JDK14
    Sealed: true
    Created-By: 1.4.2_14 (Sun Microsystems Inc.)
    Implementation-Title: ojdbc14.jar
    Specification-Vendor: Oracle Corporation
    Specification-Version: Oracle JDBC Driver version - "10.2.0.4.0"
    Implementation-Version: Oracle JDBC Driver version - "10.2.0.4.0"
    Implementation-Vendor: Oracle Corporation
    Implementation-Time: Sat Feb 2 11:40:29 2008
    Now the issue is with respect to the Java_version used for this jar which is 1.4.2_14 (Sun Microsystems Inc.)
    but my weblogic server uses jdk142_08.
    I have done quick tests after replacing the jar from the server/lib directory and seems no issue but can the differences in Java version lead to potential issues in future?
