Is there a bug in Mac Mail

I've read several other threads that seem to describe a problem similar to my own. None of these threads seem to offer a proper solution. Maybe by stating the problem clearly, someone will tell me how to proceed.
I just got a new imac with Lion onboard. I can not find any way to import my old Entourage mailboxes into Mail. The main problem is that Entourage 2004 won't open in Lion, because it's old code. But Mail demands that Entourage opens to do the import. In other word, Mail's method of   "import mailboxes" doesn't work with Entourage.
I even tried this. I opened Mail on my other computer, a macbook running SL. Then I tried an import of the Entourage database. It doesn't work there either. what i get is an import of my largest folder (with 20 subfolders and maybe 1800 messages). So I'm wondering if Mail import has a size restriction, and if so, I may need to divide up my database into smaller increments. '
The bear in the room, is that when i copy the macbooks Entourage database onto the imacs desktop, and then open my trial version of Outlook, it does the import flawlessly. I prefer to use Mail, and not spend a lot of extra money buying Outlook. I will bite the bullet if Mail can't do what i need.

No I can't. Mail can import several formats, but Outlook is not one of them. Outlook can export as an .olm database, but  .olm can't be read by Mail.  I even tried installing both Eudora and Mozilla as an interim step, but neither works with one or the other of Mail or Outlook.
The main problem seems to be that even my Snow Leopard version of Mail (in my macbook) can't grab the Entourage database even though it sees it. As I say, it will import about 1800 Entourage messages and folders, but then seems to hit a brick wall, and the rest of the folders are accurate, but they are totally empty of contents. Since this same import works just fine between Entourage and Outlook, I conclude that Mail has a bug in its importing function. At least as far as Entourage goes.
How rude that Apple updates Mail for Lion, but doesn't pay attention to the fact that one of the most common imports is for Entourage. But to import from Entourage, Mail's import algorithm demands that it actually opens Entourage. But Entourage can't open in Lion. Classic Catch-22. Nice work Apple.
I'm just trying to figure out a workaround that will let me use Mail. Here's why.
It gets even worse. i bought Microsoft Office when I bought the imac, ONLY to use Entourage or Outlook. but I didn't pay attention to the fact that the $120 "Home Version" doesn't even come with Outlook. To get Outlook beyond its "trial", MS won't let me  buy it as a standalone, or an add-on to what i already paid for. So to get Outlook beyond the trial, I have to buy the $250 version of Office, even though i don't ever use Word or Excel.

  • Is there a problem with .mac mail?

I have been unable to access my .mac mail since earlier last evening using both the Mail application or via webmail. When attempting to check mail from the Mail application I get the password rejected prompt and re-enter my password. This does nothing other than re-prompt me to enter my password again.
I can log into .mac, but when I attempt to check mail I get:
    http://www.mac.com/wm/unavailable/
This page has been coming up for me all night and all morning. I have reset my password, still nothing.
I have tried using two different Macs, one i Book G4 running 10.3.9 and a iMac G4 using 10.4.6. I have tried using two different ISPs. No luck.
The dotmac support website claims nothing is wrong with the system. And yet, clearly something is amiss. Any ideas anyone?

Yes, this happened at home and my office. I have tried both Airport and direct ethernet connection at home and my connection at work is via ethernet. The work computer is running Tiger; the home computer is on Panther. The work computer connects through a university ISP; home computer via Road Runner (Time Warner cable). The work computer had not been touched in about a week before this morning and worked fine a week ago. All I have done on the home computer is download the most recent security update. I have had no problem with either computer at either location subsequent to last evening. So basically I had email access yesterday at approximately 2 PM then I cam home approximately 8 PM and have subsequently been unable to access mail from either computer since then. No settings were manually changed on either computer during that period, I didn't change anything about my connections to the internet on either computer, etc. My .mac account is paid through March of next year, so I can rule out the old forgot to pay the bill business. I am totally perplexed.

  • Is there a bug in Mac iSync software plugins?

  • I am using a mac mini (10.8.3) with Mac Mail 6.3 (1503).  Whenever I try to forward an email with attachments, the attachments do not make it.  They show being sent, but the attachments never are sent.

    Hey Guys,
The title says it all.  Whenever I receive an email with attachments, I will try to forward the email to someone with the attachments.  Mac Mail shows that the attachments are attached, but the receiver says the attachments are not there. Our mail host is Rackspace.  We are setup with IMAP.  It should be noted that we are experiencing similar issues with OS 10.5.8 with Mac Mail 3.6 (936).
We assumed Rackspace was the problem, so we logged into their webmail portal and tested it and the attachments were received as normal, which points everything back to Mac Mail.  We even had an ISP change but the problem do not change.
I have researched the problem, and there seems to be evidence of this being a known bug with Mac Mail, but I am hoping there is a workaround.  The company is unwilling to move to a different mail client since they use Daylite 4, which does not support Thunderbird.

    Back up all data.
    1. Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/Bundles
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Open
from the contextual menu. A folder may open, or you may get an error message that the item can't be found. Either result is normal. If the folder does open and has contents, move the contents to the Desktop. Relaunch Mail and test. If there's no change, put the contents of the folder back and quit Mail again.
    2. Repeat with this line:
    /Library/Mail/Bundles
This time you may be prompted for your login password when you remove the items. Make sure they're removed from the folder and not just copied to the Desktop. If necessary, copy them first and then move the originals to the Trash.

  • Mac Mail won't remove copy from server

My mail remains in the ISP's Inbox despite the proper setting in my Mac Mail program to remove copy from server immediately after downloading. Even after I close my mail program, the old mail will not be deleted. I must go to my Inbox via the Net and delete the mail with a global tag/delete.
This problem began 5 to 7 months ago. Before that the auto deletion worked fine, and it worked fine in older versions of OS X. Is this an ISP compatibility? A bug in the current Mac Mail release? A bug in Tiger?
I asked my ISP and his first reply said this is one of many bugs in Mac Mail and I should switch to Thunderbird. I'll look at that but I prefer to use Apple software.
After 4 years I know how seldom Apple debugs Mail and Safari. Does anyone know if an update of Mail is on Apple's schedule?

Try changing the setting to After one day or When moved
from Inbox (and leave it at that), to see whether it’s just the Right > away setting that doesn’t work or that Mail fails to remove messages > from that server no matter what the settings.
    I'll do that.
BTW, have you actually tried using another mail
    client such as Thunderbird
to check whether the same happens there as well?
My ISP, who hosts a university and has a higher percentage of Mac users than most, recommended Thunderbird so I presume it does well here at Ntelos.net

  • How To Add Additional Fields When Creating New Contact From w/in Mac Mail?

Hi there. When in Mac Mail and clicking on contact information provided within an email, we are able to either (1) CREATE NEW CONTACT or (2) ADD TO EXISTING CONTACT (by clicking on the arrow next to a phone number, address, etc.). If I choose "Create New Contact," how can I add additional fields BEFORE clicking on "Add to Address Book" button in lower right corner? Let's say, for example, I know this new contacts URL or company. (Currently, I am creating the new contact from within Mac Mail and then going to Address Book and finding the contact, then editing, the adding the additional fields, then saving, and then going back to Mac Mail. This all takes time.)
Note: When creating a new iCal event from within Mac Mail, we can click on Option/Alt key when selecting drop-down arrow...and this will allow us to add additional information. The same feature isn't available for address book???

I have the exact same question and problem. If there was a way to automatically open the AB entry after "creating new contact" this would solve it.
    Thanks for any suggestion

  • Mac Mail doesn't sync changes to imap server, anyway to change this ?

It appears that mac mail does not sync any changes to the mailbox back to the imap server until mac mail quits. This is a drag, since I almost never quit mac mail and I like to see my changes reflected properly on my iphone/ipad and good old fashioned text based email. Is there anyway to tell Mac Mail to update the server on all changes (so delete the message when I delete it, or at least mark it deleted, etc..)
    Thanks!

I have experienced the same problem for a long time and it drives me nuts.
However, when I upgraded to 10.6.5, things seemed to get a lot better, although I still have occasional problems with this. So, if you haven't yet upgraded, I'd suggest doing so.
In general, if anyone has any insight into why Mail seems to

  • Apple Mail - Mac Mail-

I love my new Mac (switching over after 20 years on PC) and love Mac Mail but I have been spoiled by MS Outlook when writing emails. In Outlook it always capitalized the letter of each new sentence, capitalized "i" and auto completed days of the week as you began to type them. Is there a setting in Mac Mail that at least capitalizes the first word of each new sentence or "i"? Thanks.

I'm having the same problem, my inbox on my mail server is only 45MB, and I get about 100KB of email a day, but my mail app is somehow transferring 20TB a month to my mail server!!!! It all happens in the background so I don't even notice it going on.
I'm about to get kicked off my host. APPLE??? what the heck is going on?

  • Emailing  jpegs with mac mail

I am on Mt Lion and running Mail 6.5
when I attach jpegs either by dragging or using the attachment window, they do not always show upas downloadable on the other end - even to a mac user. I have tried 3 times to send an image to my cousin on a mac and hecannot find a way to get it out of the email \(though he sees the picture) this has happened quite a bit. Is it a bug in mac mail?

If I understand this correctly, your cousin receives the email with the image embedded in the body of the email but cannot open/save the image ?
What happens when your cousin right clicks on the image. Do they see a sub menu with various options ie save it/download it to the computer / open in a poarticular application ?

  • Is there any way to delete the favorites folder from the mac mail sidebar?

I recently made the mistake of flagging two email messages. Immediately I now see a "Flagged" icon in my Mac Mail sidebar, right under the Inbox. I the "unflagged" the messages. They went away but the Flagged icon won't. It now seems to be a permanent fixture of my mail sidebar. Is there any way to move, relocate or delete a mailbox icon you don't use and don't want to see?

There's no "downgrade" from OS X Server 10.6 Snow Leopard Server to client.
Acquire the current OS X client software, boot the DVD and use Disk Utility to erase the target disk, and reinstall the software.
Leaving the box with the server software running, with the services stopped, adds negligible performance overhead.  If any.

This sounds like the age old problem with keychain & Safari. I don't know of a way to solve it without using something like 1Password.
The iOS app has it's own built in browser, so it has more control over what gets autofilled. Safari on OS X has an 1Password extension that handles account selection & autofill etc.
Keychain is great in principle, but it quickly falls down when you need tight integration with many ID's & different use cases (work, home etc).
I'd suggest you submit feedback to Apple about your thoughts. I did so years ago about this issue & this is how far we have come (back to the point where me.com synced passwords) :^)
    http://apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
Other tools like lastpass or keypassx may also help if you want to truly segregate password storage, but that doesn't fix autofill, the way around that issue is to dedicate one browser for work.

  • Is there a way to limit the frequency of the "autosaving drafts" feature in Mac Mail on Lion?

    Using Mail Version 5.0 (1244.2/1244.3)
On MacBook Pro with Lion 10.7.1
Wondering if Is there a way to limit the frequency of the "autosaving drafts" feature in Mac Mail on Lion?
Looked all thru preferences and googled the crap out of this and can't seem to find the answer I want.
Basically, I have my mailbox behaviors set up exactly the way I want them. (ie deleted messages get saved to my "Trash" folder on the server) I do not think I should have to change them, but because of the autosave feature saving almost every 3 characters typed, I have an over abundance of versions saved in my Trash folder. This problem would be solved were there a preference somewhere I could select to save drafts "manually only" or "opened messages save when quitting" or something along those lines.
Is this a preference setting already that I am missing?
I would settle for a rule, just not sure what perameters should be set for this to work.
    Help

Typically a server has a settable parameter to limit concurrent connections. Check the server's documentation.

If you have the first gen ipod touch as your information shows, then you would have to buy a software update:

I am having a problem with the Time Machine in restoring Mac Mail back to a certain date. Everything works fine, with Mac Mail the active application and entering Time Machine, and I have found the mail file after the location process is done, then I hit Restore and there is a messages "restoring 480 messages", but I cannot locate them anywhere. What is suppose to happen is that a special file should appear in the sidebar of Mac Mail in the section On My Mac.  Any suggestion would be appreciated.
    I use Mountain Lion.

Although you can restore messages from a Time Machine snapshot within the Mail application, it generally won't work with messages that were saved by an older version of Mail. In that case, you have to use an alternative method.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a folder selected. Inside that folder are subfolders representing your Mail accounts. The names refer to the email addresses you use. Decide which ones you want to restore messages from.
Enter Time Machine and scroll back to the snapshot you want. Select the account folders you want and then selectRestore ... to... from the action menu (gear icon) in the toolbar of the snapshot window. Restore the folders to the Desktop, not to their original location.
From the Mail menu bar, select
    File ▹ Import Mailboxes...
Import from the mailboxes in the folders you restored to the Desktop. The imported messages will appear in a new mailbox. Move the ones you want to keep wherever you like and delete the rest. Then delete the folders on the Desktop.

Open Terminal in Utilties and copy/paste
This will send the attachment embedded inline. (This works in Snow Leopard, but not sure about Lion. Do a test first. If it doesn't work, just google "send attachment embedded + Lion." You don't actually have to send the message to see how it will appear.)
    defaults write com.apple.mail DisableInlineAttachmentViewing 0
To reverse the setting, change the 0 to a 1
However, whether this will work or not will depend on what the e-mail client on the receiver's end does with it.
