Is there a difference in video quality shot on MiniDV tape or HDD ?

Now that the new Macbooks lack a firewire connection, and following on from Steve Jobs comment that there are many HDD camcorders available I just wondered if there is any difference in the quality of the end video between that filmed with a MiniDV camcorder and that on a hard drive based camcorder. I have a Panasonic 3CCD camcorder that is still going strong and I think produces very good footage so I wasn't intending to replace it until it dies, but when I do replace it I want to improve on it rather than take a step backwards or sideways. If hard drive camcorders can produce better quality footage and are not just better for convenience sake I can see the point of dropping the firewire connection.
So could someone clarify this for me, and also maybe tell me what the format choice of the professionals would be?

The answer is that HDD has nothing to do with video quality. It is just another media on which the video is recorded. The selection of media has its own pros & cons independent of the video 'quality'. That said, most tape-based cams record in DV or HDV whereas most HDD based cams record in AVCHD.
Quality is subjective. You can read all about the relative merits of DV, HDV & AVCHD on the net and in this forum. HDV and AVCHD are much more highly compressed than DV but they enable hi-def, 16:9 video.
If you're an average consumer you would be hard pressed to see significant differences between these formats in the finished video other than the obvious 4:3 vs 16:9 aspect ratio difference.
As David said, you will be better off spending time looking for camcorders that have the best lenses, and learning how to shoot top quality video, then worrying about the codec or the media.

  • Is there a difference in Video quality between ATI & Nvidia on 24" iMac's?

I am wondering if there is a quality in video and overall appearance between the ATI HD 256MB and the Nvidia 8800 512 on the 24" iMac's?
    Any feedback out there?
    Thanks.
    BB

No. Both will deliver an equal quality picture. The difference comes down to rendering performance in 3D Applications or video games. The 8800GT will be able to render more frames per second than the Radeon 2600. As a secondary the difference in Video memory 256MB vs 512MB might be important if you are planning on running an second display. Running 2 displays on one video card will split the video RAM between the two displays. So basically if you plan on running a second display or playing video games I would go for the 8800GT otherwise the Radeon 2600 will do just fine.

  • Difference in video quality

When i wrote a program for video playback i found a difference between the quality of the video played by jmf and by my VLC player ( I am sure my eyes are not playing any tricks with me ) . Has anyone experienced any sort of difference in quality when played by jmf and a standard player like vlc or windows media player classic( or any other player )?

  • Is there any difference in sound quality in streaming music over Airport Express in IMac, MacBook Pro and iPad?

I've noticed a difference in quality when streaming my iPad wirelessly to my Yamaha receiver and high quality speakers versus my Pro or iMac. The iPad sounds like a toy in comparison to the computers. I'd like some expert advice on what I should expect from the three mentioned devices when streaming wirelessly through a pretty good audio system. Like for instance, should there be much difference in sound quality between the Pro and the iMac?

First, don't hang onto the hope that next year's MBP won't have an optical drive; instead, you'd be advised to purchase a 2011 MacBook Air, which doesn't have an optical drive but relies on SDD. If you need a CD/DVD drive, you can get that separately, if you need. The latest Air has received better reviews than anything else in the Apple lineup.
I'm not an expert on the different brand of keys available. But you'll want to make sure the color is an exactly match to the model. Replacing thes keys is relatively inexpensive but tedious, you might do well to email sellers to guarantee the color and fit.
    Good luck with the repair!

  • Imported video quality vs. original DV tape

    Just curious...
I have noticed that the quality of the video from the original DV tape (camcorder hooked directly to TV) is better quality than the DVD I created iMovie and iDVD. Is that normal? For example, when shooting pictures of the ocean or a pool, the water movement is clear and sharp on the original DV tape but on the DVD that I create the water movement can sometimes appear pixelated.
I import the raw video to iMovie, complete some basic editing and save the movie. Then I create an iDVD project and create a disk image. I have the highest quality setting in iDVD. Am I missing something or is this normal to have some reduction of quality from the original DV tape?

the quality of the video from the original DV tape (camcorder hooked directly to TV) is better quality than the DVD I created iMovie and iDVD
The MPEG2 on a DVD is much more compressed than DV (on the original tape AND in the iMovie project), so the quality will always be worse on a DVD.
Dimly lit scenes, high action scenes, water, etc are difficult to compress to a DVD so that a human eye doesn't see the inevitable degradation in quality.
iDVD's Best Performance setting yields slightly better quality than its Best Quality setting, so you may want to use BP if you want the best quality iDVD can give. If you must use Best Quality, then try to keep the project length below 75-90 minutes because after that even easy scenes might get blocky (i.e. you start to see the MPEG artifacts).
There are better quality encoders than iDVD. Toast's encoder is somewhat better and more serious users might also consider MainConcept MPEG Encoder (AFAIK the same engine as in Toast), BitVice, Digigami MegaPEG.X, Compressor etc, or some hardware MPEG encoder.

  • HT1933 when i play my purchased movies in HD there the audio and video quality is poor

I have purchased movies in HD but when i try to play them the audio skips and there is skipping in the video as well. However i also have a few movies in Sd and they do not have these problems. However even though the computer im using is not a MAC is an extremely nice Asus with a 4th gen I5 and supports HD video playback. Anyone know what to do  I tried to get help from apple and they scheduled me a phone call two weeks from now? some help right?!

Can anybody suggest me how can I improve the quality of audio and video in JMF Player ? Below here I am providing the source code of the JMF Player I am using:My suggestion would be to use a supported OS with your JMF. JMF doesn't support "Ubuntu 8.04 and MAC OS 10.5", it only supports Redhat and Solaris (and Windows 9X or NT 4.0)

  • Video Quality: iTunes Purchase vs. DVD rip

Is there a difference in video quality between, on the one hand, buying a movie on iTunes and, on the other hand, buying a DVD and ripping it to the iPhone?

    Wildattorney,
Depending on encoder used, and settings there could be no difference, or vary widely.
However, discussing ripping DVDs is a murky area of copyright, and specifically against the Terms of Use for Apple Discussions.
    Hope this helps,

  • Is there a difference in quality between importing into 08 and Final Cut Pr

When importing video from a DV camera, is there a difference in the quality of the raw video recorded onto the Hard Drive between iMovie 08, iMovie 6 and Final Cut Pro?
Will I get better quality using Final Cut?
    Thanks
    Kevin

sorry for 'overwhelming' you with info
yes, all apps copy the dv-encoded material from miniDV devices 'natively' = lossless import..
but only iM08 then adds some 'loss' .. nobody knows exactly, what & how.. but you are not able to EXport lossless from within iM08 ..
example: import dv, export dv = adds blurr and 'magnifies' somehow the same file .. ( ! )
using iMHD≤6, FCE/P allows you, to export lossless = highest quality possible (except the parts of your project, which need renderning, e.g. titles, transitions...)
example: import dv, export dv = same quality ...
so, if _pic quality_ is your major concern, avoid iM08 ..
if you want fast results and export quality doesn't matter: iM08
if you want a Library off all imports ever and full integration into AppleTV/, YT.. = iM08
if you want other codecs than dv and simple use = iM08
if you want all imports for any future project and high dv quality = FCE/P
if you want easy to use and high dv quality = iMHD≤6 ..
if you want other codecs than dv and Hollywood quality = FCP

  • Quality of MiniDV Tape Used

Did a quick forum search and didn't see anything, and figured this was as relevant a place to post, so...
Has anyone ever noticed quality differences when using different types of MiniDV tapes? For instance, right now I'm using Sony Premiums and recording in HD. They look fine. This summer I'm going to be doing some more professional/promotional work for a friend's company and recording a friend's wedding. Should I spend the extra money on the Sony HD tapes? And I also see they carry an 85 minute tape...sounds enticing...
Anyone ever used any of these?
    Edit: Here's Sony's tapes: http://is.gd/sh5a

Different grades of tape can have no effect on qualities such as sharpness and colour etc. as everything is recorded as zeroes and ones.
If the digital code is present there can be no variation in appearance unlike analogue tapes and films.
The only way quality can be affected is by dropouts which can produce mosaic images or no image at all.
The Pro tapes are identical to normal ones in all aspects but one.
During manufacture, batches of tape are tested for things like dropouts. All tapes will have a certain amount of dropouts.
Any batches that have significantly less dropouts than average are put to one side and used for "Pro" quality.
Of course, this does not give a 100% guarantee that the tapes are perfect, as the tested portion may be great, but a few inches further along there may be dodgy parts.
But it means you probably have a better chance on average of getting a tape with fewer dropouts.
FWIW I have never experienced the effects of dropouts and I invariably use the cheapest Panasonic tape costing less than £2 ($3).
P.S. Be wary of the 85 minute tapes. Apart from the excessive additional cost they are mechanically thinner and therefore more prone to damage.

  • Is there a difference in quality between exporting to .dv in iMovie09 & FCP

I recently purchased FCP to do batch exporting of full quality .dv files because '09 didn't seem to have that option. I've been messing around with it now, though, and it appears as though both are capable of doing this. I've searched for this information and found conflicting results-- is exporting to .dv in iMovie destructive or is there no difference between '09 and FCP?

This thread sounds mysteriously similar to this one.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2380150&start=0&tstart=0
If you export to .dv with either FCP or iMovie I'm quite certain that you will be re-compressing your video. That's just the nature of the interleaved file structure of .dv
I you import .dv into FCP you will have to render the audio ONE time. Not the video.
If you export .mov files using the current settings (which should be DV NTSC) you will NOT be re-compressing the video. but you will have a .mov file.
FCP is NOT the right application for archival or any sort of file management tasks. File management is one of FCPs weakest attributes.
You may want to have a look at CatDV
    good luck

  • Video quality differences (3G DUN vs Road Runner)

I've always used iChat from my RoadRunner connection and accepted the subpar video quality. The other day I was connected to my 3G (HSDPA) phone and browsing from the airport and fired up ichat and did a test video call to one of the apple3utest IDs... the incoming video was near perfect. There were no jaggies and it looked so perfect. i have taken my home router out of the mix and connected my mac directly to the cable modem and still can't get the video to be comparable. the latency on my 3G tethering connection is good (good for tethering), its usually around 250ms (where as my RoadRunner conneciton is under 100ms).. i just dont' understand why this is such a big difference between the two.

    Realistically it means changing ISP.
You could try changing the iChat Preferences > Video section > Bandwidth Limit drop down to 500
I presume you have changed the System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab to 1.5Mbps ?

  • Burning TS folder as Data DVD vs. Video DV. Is there a difference?

Is there a difference between burning a Video_TS folder as a Data-DVD vs. a Video-DVD in a program like Toast?
I'm experiencing a wierd problem with a client where my discs only play on computers and not on DVD-players and I wonder if I may have burned the folder as a DATA DVD instead of a Video DVD and that is the problem...
Does this make sense or am I a complete loon?
    Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the link and quick response. I did use Toast
When I was working on this proj a few monthes ago, I remembering giving them a "Master" disc with the TS folder in it. I'm currently wondering if perhaps I burned it as a DATA disc because (according to my thinking, let me know if its incorrect) that a TS folder burned as DATA would be of higher quality than a TS folder burned as Video, should they ever need to have it replicated.
Come to find out they had the disc duplicated in-house. And those discs (including my Master) will only play on computers not DVD players... which seems to be consistent with a DATA disc. They inspected the disc and the folders/files look to all be in place so its kind of a mystery. Again, this seems to be what would happen if I burned a DATA instead of VIDEO: all the files would looks to be in place.
    Thoughts?

  • Is there any difference in quality between mp4 and m4v?

Is there any difference in quality between mp4 and m4v? I am figuring out how best to save old VCR files. Is the 264 category the best?

So, what would that software be? Anything that I mentioned, e.g., iMovie? Any Video Converter?
I'm a Mac user so I want files that play "natively" in QT X, QT 7, QL, iPod Touch, iPhone, iPad, and/or TV players. This means I want the H.264/AAC compressed data in MOV, MP4, or M4V file containers. I can use QT 7 Pro, MPEG Streamclip, and /or QT X to move MPEG-4/AAC compressed data to MOV file containers, MPEG Streamclip to movie M4V and MOV MPEG-4/AAC data to MP4 file containers, and Subler to move MP4 or MOV MPEG-4 AVC/AAC/AC3/Chapter data to M4V file containers. This is strictly a simple "copy" operation and no recompression of data is involved. (I.e., the quality is not changed.)
iMovie is a video editor and it forces an export conversion of your project once completed which can degrade quality. Have never used the Any Video Converter so I don't know if it has an audio and/or video "passthrough" feature for data already in a compatible compression formats. If it doesn't then any conversion it makes has the potential to degrade video content.
As to AVI, this is a legacy file container abandoned by Microsoft a dozen years ago in favor of their modernized WMV compression format/file type products. Compared to MKV, AVI is an outmoded/out-of-date container which I don't recommend you use unless you are a glutton for punishment. However, if you must use it, then you might try the AvidMux app. It can "copy" compatible content to a number of file container types—including AVI and MKV. Just don't blame me if its use creates more problems than it solves on current Mac systems.

  • Is there a difference in quality by going directly to iDVD

In iMovieHD 5, Is there a difference in quality by going directly to iDVD or by "sharing" to a high quality Quicktime movie and importing that into iDVD? I want to make sure that the quality of my stills doesn't degrade too much. Sometimes, I've noted that they get a little jagged between transitions.
Is there an acceptable or safe length of time an iMovie should be?
    Thanks,
    Bob
    iMac 2.1gHz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Go to your iMovie's project file and control click on it.
    Go to 'show package contents'.
Go to the folder that says 'shared movies.
Then to the folder that says 'iDVD'.
Drag and drop this file into iDVD's window.
Another way is to simply drag the iMovie HD project into the iDVD window. iDVD is smart enough to find the file it needs in the project package.
