Is there a list of best practices for Azure Sql Server?

I was talking with a Sql Server expert today and learned that Azure Sql Server can take up to a minute to respond to a query that normally takes a fraction of a second. This is one of those things where it's really valuable to learn it when architecting as
opposed to when we go live.
Is there a list of best practices for Azure Sql Server? If so, what are they?
We will be calling the database from multiple instances, both Azure websites and Azure cloud services. The calls will be about 90% selects, 9% updates, and 1% inserts.

  • Is there a list of best practices for Azure Cloud Services?

Cloud Services are not Sql Server (obviously) but that led to the question - Is there a list of best practices for Azure Cloud Services? If so, what are they?
We will be placing the cloud services in multiple datacenters and using traffic manager to point people to the right one. The cloud service will set between an IMAP client & server, pretending to be the mail client to the server, and the server to the client.
Mostly it will pass all requests & responses across from one to the other.

For this issue, I have collected some blogs and document about best practices for azure cloud service, you can view them, but I am not sure they are your need.

For your scenarioes, If you'd like to communicate with each instances, I recommend you refer to this document (
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/azure/hh180158.aspx ). And generally, if we want connect the client to server on Azure, the service bus is a good choice (http://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/articles/cloud-services-dotnet-multi-tier-app-using-service-bus-queues/
If I misunderstood, please let me know.

We will be the website in multiple datacenters and using traffic manager to point people to the right one. The website will run as a REST server using Web API 2, mostly for license checks from our app running on corporate Exchange servers. And a small part
will be for javascript based web pages used for account CRUD.

sorry I was not sure if you were using a web server or what?
One other idea out of the slow cooker is to use a dedicated web server with SQL server running beside IIS
If you are using the standard web sites, then the SQL option is about as slow as FTP uploads, very slow
I have considered time of day too, and it seems Azure is less loaded early in the AM

  • Best Practices for NCS/PI Server and Application Monitoring question

    Hello,
I am deploying a virtual instance of Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.2 (1.2.1.012) on an ESX infrastructure. This is being deployed in an enterprise enviroment. I have questions around the best practices for moniotring this appliance. I am looking to monitor application failures (services down, db issues) and "hardware" (I understand this is a virtual machine, but statistics on the filesystem and CPU/Memory is good).
Firstly, I have enabled via the CLI the snmp-server and set the SNMP trap host destination. I have created a notification receiver for the SNMP traps inside the NCS GUI and enabled the "System" type alarm. This type includes alarms like NCS_DOWN and PI database is down. I am trying to understand what the difference between enabling SNMP-SERVER HOST via the CLI and setting the Notification destination inthe GUI is? Also how can I generate a NCS_DOWN alarm in my lab. Doing NCS stop does not generate any alarms. I have not been able to find much information on how to generate this as a test.
Secondly, how and which processes should I be monitoring from the Management Station? I cannot easily identify the main NCS procsses from the output of ps -ef when logged in the shell as root.
    Thanks guys!

1.) What is the cost of having the scope in a <jsp:useBean> tag set to 'session'? I am aware that there are a list of scopes like page, application, etc. and that if i use 'session' my variable will live for as long as that session is alive. (did i get this right?). You should rather look to the functional requirements instead of costs. If the bean need to be session scoped (e.g. maintain the logged in user), then do it so. If it just need to be request scoped (e.g. single page form data), then keep it request scoped.
2.)If the JSP Page where i use that <useBean> is to be accessed hundred of times a day, will it compensate my server resources? Right now i am using the Sun Glassfish Server. It will certainly eat resources. Just supply enough CPU speed and memory to a server. You cannot expect that a webserver running at a Pentium 500MHz with 256MB of memory can flawlessly serve 100 simultaneous users at the same second. But you may expect that it can serve 100 users per 24 hour.
3.) Can you suggest best practice in memory management given the architecture i described above?Just write code so that it doesn't unnecessarily eat memory. Only allocate memory if your application need to do so. You should rather let the hardware depend on the application requirements, not to let the application depend on the hardware specs.
4.)Also, I have implemented connection pooling in my architecture, but my application is to be used by thousands of clients everyday.. Can the Sun Glassfish Server take care of that or will I have to purchase a powerful sever?Glassfish is just an application server software, it is not server hardware. Your concerns are rather hardware related.

  • Best Practice for a Print Server

What is the best practice for having a print server serving over 25 printers 10 of which are colour lasers and the rest black and white lasers.
    Hardware
At the moment we have one server 2Ghz Dual G5 with 4GB Ram and xserve RAID. The server is also our main Open directory server, with about 400+ clients.
I want to order a new server and want to know the best type of setup for the optimal print server.
    Thanks

Since print servers need RAM and spool space, but not a lot of processing power, I'd go with a Mac Mini packed with ram and the biggest HD you can get into it. Then load a copy of Xserver Tiger on it and configure your print server there.
Another option, if you don't mind used equipment, is to pick up an old G4 or G5 Xserve, load it up with RAM and disk space, and put tiger on that.
    Good luck!

  • Best Practice to fetch SQL Server data and Insert into Oracle Tables

    Hello,
I want to read sqlserver data everry half an hour and write into oracle tables ( in two different databases). What is the best practice for doing this?
We do not have any database dblinks from oracle to sqlserver and vice versa.
    Any help is highly appreciable?
    Thanks

    Well, that's easy:
use a TimerTask to do the following every half an hour:
    - open a connection to sql server
    - open two connections to the oracle databases
    - for each row you read from the sql server, do the inserts into the oracle databases
    - commit
    - close all connections

  • Is there a best practice for multi location server setups including mac mail server?

    Afternoon all,
Last year I setup a client with Snow Leopard Server including hosting his mail on the server with Mac Mail Server and calendaring.  He now has plans to open other sites with the same setup, how can this be done using Mac Server?  The implementation of a new server on the new site would be straight forward my concerns / question are:
    1. How would the two servers communicate?
        a.)Do they need to communicate?
    3. How will mail across the two sites work?
a.) How will DNS work for email internally?
b.) How will DNS work for emai externally?
    4.  How will calendaring work across the two sites?
Is Mac Server the best platform for moving ahead with this type of business need?
Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.
    Anthony

    Camelot,
many thanks for the speedy reply.  Your comments are very helpful thank you, if I may I will give you some for information and some other questions.
The offices will be from 5 miles to 25 miles apart, the new office and ones that follow will be considered as branches of the main office for example the company name is Sunflower and it serves area 1, then new will office will serve area 2 and so on.  So in theory I could leave the main server domain and mail mx record as sunflower and then add further servers as 2.sunflower.com, 3.sunflower.com as domains and mx records? This would then provide unique mail records and users within the organisation such as [email protected] and [email protected], which doesnt look to good I would prefer all users to be name@sunflower how can this be acheived?
With regard to user activity in the whole users will be fixed but their will be floaters such as managers and the owners that may at times float from one office to the other and would beneift from logging into any machine and getting their profile.
I have thought about VPN's as I have acheieved this type of setup with Microsoft server products, I have found speed issues in some cases, how can this be acheived using OS X, are there any how to docs around?  In the Microsoft setup I acheived this using netgear VPN Firewalls which ofcourse adds an overhead, can this be acheived using OS X propietary VPN software?
So ultimatley I would prefer to have the one domain without subs "sunflower.com" and users to be able to login to their profiles from either location. The main location now will remain as headoffice and the primary location and the new will be satelites.
I hope that covers all of your other question, again many thanks for your comments and time.
    Kind Regards
    Anthony

  • Best size for VM SQL Server for a start or maybe Azure SQL Database?

    Hello Everyone,
My question is quite general but some of You may have already considered similar issues. Let's say or assume I have the website and mobile application - social kind - used by:
    1. 10 K users
    2. 100 K users
    3. 1 K K users
    4. 20 K K users MAX
I am strongly considering use of VM SQL Server mostly because of its PARTITIONING functionality, some advantages in the context of INDEXING compared to Azure SQL Database and JOBs availibility.
Question: what would be the best size and count of VMs related to SQL Server for the start and later?
Question 2 - I am able to move JOBs functionality to my Worker role if I wanted to consider use of Azure SQL Database. SQL Server still has at least those 2 advantages (Partitioning, better Indexing) - is it worth considering Azure SQL Database service for
    100 K users and more?
    Regards,

    Hello Jambor,
Considering the number of users i wouldnt recommend an Azure SQL database, because of certain limitations like Max worker threads, Max sessions, etc. Also the maximum size of the database can be 500GB.
Please refer http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/azure/dn741336.aspx and http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/azure/dn369873.aspx for the Azure SQL database options and limitations.
If your application needs to scale-out, Azure SQL Databases are recommended. If it needs scaling-up - then the choice is SQL Server on Azure VM. Please refer http://azure.microsoft.com/blog/2012/06/26/data-series-sql-server-in-windows-azure-virtual-machine-vs-sql-database/
    and http://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/articles/data-management-azure-sql-database-and-sql-server-iaas/ for comparison.
If you already have your application running successfully on your on-premise server, you could use a similar machine on Azure for hosting your SQL server instance. The options are at http://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/details/virtual-machines/. You could
start with a SQL Server enterprise edition on an A3 VM and then scale-up as needed.

  • Best Practices for Configuring Windows Server 2012 R2 for VM Performance

    Good afternoon,
I've been told that VMWare has written a document or article on how to get the most performance out of an instance of Server 2012 R2 as a virtual machine. I was told this magical article has things like a checklist of features or services that can be turned off (such as tablet features) that will increase the performance/low overhead on the VM.
Can anyone help me find such an article?
    Thanks,
    Johnathan

    Hello there,
There is no upgrade path from Server 2012 Essentials to R2.  R2 is not an upgrade, it is a new build.  Essentials does not upgrade easily, you will want to perform a migration of the server.  This will require additional hardware.  You
can possibly backup the 2012 Essentials, build a temp server on workstation hardware just to do the migration from,  restore the backup to the new server and then perform the migration to R2.

  • Best practices for upgrading Windows Server Essentials 2012 to R2?

    Hi,
I need to upgrade my Windows Server Essentials 2012 on an HP microserver to Essentials R2 (specifically the R2 role on Standard rather than as a VM). After a reasonable amount of searching, I haven't found anything online that specifically addresses this in-place
upgrade scenario. Since this is already an Essentials server, it's the PDC in its own domain, etc. Has anyone that's done this upgrade have any experiences or warnings to share?
    Thanks,
    Sean

  • Best Practices for Setting up a Windows 2012 R2 STD Domain Controller in a Remote Site

So I'm looking for an article or writeup similar to the "Adding Domain Controllers in Remote Sites" TechNet article but for Windows Server 2012 STD R2.  Here is my scenario:
    1.  I want to setup the domain controller at Site A where the primary domain controller is located.  The primary domain controller is Windows Server 2008 R2.
    2.  Once the DC is setup I plan on leaving it on our network for a few days before shipping it to remote Site B for installation
    Other key items:
    1.  The remote Site B will have a different IP range than Site A but will be connected to Site A via a single VPN tunnel.  All the DCs that replicate with each other are on the same domain.
    2.  The 2012 DC that I setup for Site B (same domain in same forest) will be a DHCP, DNS, and WSUS server all replicating to the primary DC at Site A
    Questions:
    1.  What items can I setup while it's at Site A without effecting or conflicting with the existing network and domain controller?  Can I setup a scope once the DHCP role is added?
    2.  All of our DCs replicate through Sites and Services, do I have to manually add this to our primary DC for the new DC going to remote Site B?  Or when does this happen automatically when I promote the DC?
All and all I'm just looking for a list of Best Practices for 2012 or a Step by Step Guide.  Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi,
    Thanks for your posting.
When you install AD DS in the hub or staging site, disconnect the installed domain controller, and then ship the computer to the remote site, you are disconnecting a viable domain controller from the replication topology.

  • Best practice for saving data in SQL server

    Hi all
Hoping for a little help on this question.
If i have a list of fields ex. (name, address, postal, phone etc.). Then i create a webform/task
to gather some of theese fields (name, postal), then i make another webform/task to gather some other fields (address, phone).
What is best practice in the SQL server for storing returning values.
    Is it:
    1. to make a table with all the fields in the list + taskid. Theese fields could be in
correct format (number, date etc.). And all answers to all tasks is inserted into this table.
    2. Make a value table for each field with the correct type + task id. So all name values
are stored in the "name value table" with the task id.
How would i select values from a certain task from this kind of setup?
    3. ??
    Best regards
    Bo

    Hi Atul
Thanks for your reply, can you elaborate a bit further on this, since i am still a little confused.
Let me try to explain my scenario at bit more:
Say instead that it is 50 fields in a table with their own unique ID, maybe an answer table
    would look like this:
    taskid | field_1 | field_2 | field_3 | field 4 | field_n
So no matter which fields the user fillsout it will can be stored in one table.
QUestion is, is this a good way to do it? and how do i select from this table using a join
As far as i know you cant name columns in a table with just numbers, which would have been
great, giving the columnnames the field_id.
    OR
Would you have 50 tables each with a field_id and a value (of correct type) ?
And could you give me an example of how to bind and select from this kind of structure ?
Also inserting into 50 tables on a save.... is that the right way to go? :)
    Best regards
    Bo

There may be a few links in Apple Support, regarding articles about how to use iBooks Author
and iBooks Store, etc; these would be separated into two general categories by device used.
Since there is an iOS and an OS X version of each, you may have to look to see what Apple
Support says about the one you are interested in; and how far their database goes toward an
answer to your question. Otherwise, a general search engine approach may be necessary.
Not sure if anything along the lines of what you seek would be available in an App.
References to iBooks Author and iBooks Store, etc appear within these two categories in Support:
    For Mac OS X:

    For iOS:

Appears a community host moved your earlier post into one of the iBooks Author or Store sections

of iBooks you are interested in, have similar questions or answers by others who'd visited previously.

In my reply to your earlier thread, prior to it being moved, those links to sections of iBooks Author, etc
are posted. You can also find them from the main Apple Support Communities page.
Sorry to not be of much help in this matter.
