Is there a "take" feature in Logic 8?

Looking for a feature that permits multiple discreet takes on one track....as opposed to adding a new track.
thanks

Great...thanks tons for your help....this has really made my night, as I've been trying to get the hang of logic.
Is there a pause/record mode based on a midi event being received? In DP, I used this quite often. I could go to a location, set the pause/record mode, and the recording would begin as soon as I hit a note on my keyboard.
Also...something I've become accustomed to is being able to type in a location in measures, and then hit enter, and the playhead would go to that location. In DP, I would hit the key command to enter into that mode, then type the measure number, hit period....that would take me to the bar or beat...enter that number and then hit enter, and the playhead would go to that location. Anything like that in logic?

  • Weird...Is there a polyphony limit to Logic?

    OK, I'm stumped.
I've just started a new composition. So far I've used only 10 tracks. Each track is using an instance of EXS24. The tracks are, from 1-10, Piano, Bass (arco), Cellos, Violas, Violins, Soft pad, Celeste, Flute, Clarinet, and Harp.
Measures 21-28 are using the harp, clarinet, flute, celeste, pad, violas and cellos. Starting in measure 29, I have the harp drop out completely, and the violins take over the melody, and I've add arco bass.
Here's the strange thing that's happening:
The problem is that everything except the flute cuts out half-way through measure 30! It's weird. It sounds just like it used to when I maxed out my polyphony on a keyboard -- back in the day when I used outboard keyboards . Everything cuts out, even the reverb. Actually, I think the flute cuts out too, but it probably doesn't seem like it because it's in a moving line, so the next note picks up right away. Everything else comes back in on the downbeat of measure 30, when each instrument has to play the next note.
I think the problem is somehow related to the harp -- even though the harp isn't playing in measure 30. If I mute the harp track, measure 30 plays just fine. Or, if I start the track in measure 27 (2 measures before the harp section ends), it'll play fine. But if I play 4 or more measures of the harp section, measure 30 cuts out completely for a second.
I've made sure that I'm never playing more than 3 notes at a time in the harp track, and have even played with the "voices" setting in the EXS24 instance on that track. But no matter how many voices I allocate to the harp (large or small) the effect on measure 30 remains the same. The only thing so far that solves the problem is muting the whole harp track.
BTW, the polyphony requirement isn't very high in measure 30 -- probably only about 12 or 13 notes, although the damper pedal is used on the piano, so that would raise it a bit, but probably no more than 6 or 10 more notes. Certainly I've taxed sequences much harder in times past. But, I thought that MAYBE I've accidentally changed some global parameter that effects what's going on, thereby screwing up measure 30. BTW, this is the only measure in the song that's effected (although the sequence is only 38 measure long at present).
Does this problem sound familiar at all? Or is this just a very bizarre problem that makes no sense to anyone? It certainly isn't making sense to me.
I would greatly appreciate any advice you could give me.
    Thank you!
    Kevin
Edited to add: BTW, I don't know if the following symptom is helpful or not, but I'm going to add it anyway, just in case it helps explain something.
As I was playing with the "voices" parameter in the EXS24 instance on the harp track, I noticed that even though there is only 3 notes playing at any given time, and no pedal is being used, the "voices used" number keeps going up and up as the sequence plays the harp section. I'm assuming that the "voices used" number doesn't go down because of a long sample length (I'm using the harp that comes with VSL's Opus series).
After the harp section ends in measure 28, the "voices used" starts going down slowly, taking about 3 measures to make it back down to zero.
Does this make sense? I don't know if this is helpful to my problem, or if it's not related at all. But, I thought I'd better include it just in case.

Sounds to me like you're experiencing "SIDS", or "sudden instrument dropout syndrome", an endemic problem with certain version of Logic. This was supposedly fixed in 7.2.3 (if memory serves), but it seems like you're running into SIDS nevertheless.
There are other bugaboos with Logic (related to the performance of audio instrument plugs) that you might want to know about. For example, some sampler plugs, including instances of EXS-24 itself will not play back correctly if you initiate playback from a downbeat. It doesn't always happen, but then again, it happens a lot to me....
For example, if you were to play a sequence back from, say, bar 54, beat 1, you might not hear some of the notes (or you'll hear bits and pieces of garbled sound), even if those notes are quantized to the downbeat, or, even if chase notes is enabled. But then, when this occurs, if you were to start from an 8th note before that point, playback is fine! It's an inexplicable and confounding problem that Logic can't play back correctly from a downbeat but will play back if you start playback off the downbeat.
Next, polyphony. Logic does not have a polyphony limit exactly... The the number of plugs that can be handled (both sampler and fx plugs) dependent on your computer's horsepower. Taking into account non-Logic-related system requirements, other programs that might be running in the background, and then Logic and the cumulative needs of your plugs, these things all draw on processor resources. It's entirely possible to use up all available resources if you have too much going on. That's what the various benchmark tests are all about -- how far can you push the computer until it says, "uncle"...
But it doesn't sound like you have a very heavy processor load, and as I said earlier, it sounds to me like you're running into SIDS.
    Now...
By chance have you done any capture recording? (this is important, please let me know).
Finally, regarding the polyphony count of EXS while only a few notes are being played... you are on the right track: as long as a sample is playing (even if it's nearly inaudible during the last moments of a long sample's release), it's using a voice. So let's say that you're playing a simple 3-note pattern outlining C major (C, E, G). If you play those notes over and over again, and assuming that you're playing a harp sound with a long release, here's the deal:
The first 3 notes will indeed use 3 voices (CEG). Now you play another C, E, G. If those original 3 voices are still ringing out, you're now using 6 voices. Play C, E, G again. If those original 6 voices are still ringing out, you're now playing 9 voices. And so on.
HTH. (Please let me know if you're using capture recording.)

  • Hi! Anybody knows the meaning of the "ornament" feature in Logic software?

Hi! Anybody knows the meaning of the "ornament" feature in Logic software?

    They're a bit odd....
An ornament is just a visual frame in the Environment, that does nothing except, well...be there.
I've seen some people use them in complex Environment setups to act as a border for a group of buttons for example, so it acts like one of those little plastic boxes that you puts knobs and switches onto, to make them look better.
    That's about it.

  • What do you think of the new multi-takes feature?

So the new multi-take feature seems to be the way it's done in ProTools - they layer on top of one another and you can click on the region to select the appropriate take.
Personally, that had confused me a bit, because things were hidden. I liked seeing everything I had, so I really liked the way Logic worked it, allowing multiple tracks tied to the same audio object. I would then comp takes by separating regions and leaving good takes unmuted. That way I can still see the takes that I didn't use for the comp. Make sense?
I'm curious what you guys think are pros and cons of the two approaches.

After using it for an hour it s totally unusable for me.
When I comp I often have to nudge bits of audio to get the feel right.
You cannot do this at all and also auditioning the takes is also very painful.
So is this for clicktrack-guided single tracks then? Can this be used when you record simultaneous multiple tracks (think orchestra with a main stereo pair, spots on woodwinds and several others - say 12 tracks at once). Then another take of the whole piece (without click means slightly different tempo in places). Then another... Can the comping feature assemble the best pieces from each take like cut/splice a virtual multitrack tape? Or is this feature something more limited?

Here's a link to the New Features in logic 8 .pdf

    Thanks RealDave.
I'm still reading through the manual as well...and so far I do not see any mention of an improvement of the SRC (sample rate conversion), which was an issue.
I hope they have re-done that code in this update. I will probably email Apple, although, they never answer...so...
    Cheers

  • Hi there, i was wondering if there is a feature in Thunderbird that will allow automatic printing of an email after it has been sent? Thank you

    Hi guys,
I was hoping there might be a feature or add-on that will allow me to automatically print an email after I send it. For the purpose of creating a paper trail we have to print out at least the 1st page of all emails sent to our clients. Love using Thunderbird and would like to keep using it. I know there is a feature in Outlook. Hope you guys have one too :)

There is an add-on, [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/send-filter/ Send Filter], that allows filters to act on the Sent folder, and there is an add-on, [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/filtaquilla/ FiltaQuilla], that adds Print to the filter Actions. I can't confirm whether or not you can get them to work together to achieve your aim.

  • Is there a comment feature in Pages for iPad?

Hey all you iPad owners. Is there a comment feature in Pages for iPad? There is one in Pages '09 that I use all the time. Not having that feature in the iPad version of Pages could be a deal breaker for me buying an iPad. Thanks in advance for your help!

I think it not an unreasonable feature request for a word prcessor. I feel that in scaling pages down to the iPad Apple has also made the product a little less attractive for professional usage. For example pages for iPad really should preserve Endnotes created elsewhere, but it does not at present. A shame, but we can hope that in subsequent versions of pages for iPad that support or preservation of advanced word processing features is introduced.

  • Are there any amazing features for people with disabilities not available in Windows?

I do volunteer work at a group in Tokyo which provides English conversation and light computer lessons for people with various kinds of disabilities on Sundays at a community center.
They want me to come in on Sundays for a few months and teach people - such as their other teachers - how to use Apple computers. And they bought all the teachers, including me, new MacBook Airs or MacBook Pros.
The thing is, these people are basically all Windows users, and they seem, somehow, to use their Windows machines just fine with varying disabilities. In particular, some portion of the group are blind. There is a Mac enthusiast who has gotten it into his mind that he wants more of his fellow members using Macs, rather than Windows, so he is behind this new project.
I know there are "accessibility features" for the Mac, though I've not really made use of them myself except for some light testing so far to see that they work.
My question is "why Mac?" I am a Mac user myself, and I enjoy using a Mac. But I think it is probably a matter of what you are used to. If these people are happy using their Windows machines I don't know of anything I can say to make them want to switch. So I'm not sure how practical or productive the entire plan is, though I'm happy to try to help out, and I enjoy working with the group.
I can certainly teach these people, who are not familiar with Macs, how to use them. I've been using Macs for years and years.
But is there anything I can say about why Mac features for people with disabilities are better than Windows features? Any examples anybody can point me to?
Like I said, I'm happy to go over there on Sundays and help out and bring my new MacBook Pro over and hook it up to the projector and point out interesting things you can do on the Mac and answer questions.
But the big question that I can't answer is, "Are there benefits to using a Mac over Windows for people with disabilities?" If anybody knows of any, please let me know! I don't want the person promoting this project to feel it was a waste at all. I think basically he feels left out being basically the only Mac user there and wants to generate more of a circle of supportive people around him who are Mac users since he himself is losing his sight. So if there are factual, practical reasons for "Why Mac for people with disabilities" I would like to explain them.
    Thanks,
    Doug

    Hi Doug
It sounds like you are doing a good job with your technology students. I've been an Apple Mac user for well over 30 years and occasionally had to use Windows when using MS Access.  To my mind, the Mac is much easier to use from the "Starting Grid" than Windows.  And having worked in a University with both platforms, the cult is fairly evenly balanced.  However, the current generations of Apple Tablets are infinately easier to understand than OSX or Win7/8.    I think there is an old saying here which has many merits "If it ain't broke" don't try and fix it".   If your students are learning to understand Windows and are coping with it, the confusion of teaching them Mac, might actually give yourself a potential nightmare scenario.  Certainly Microsoft with Windows 8, is trying to bring the latest operating system into the 21st Century, and whilst it wouldn't suit me, why create a dilemma for yourself when they seem to be happy with what they've got.
In terms of your final paragraph, and reaching for the proverbial glass ball, I can see a future of tablets gaining even more popularity, and with the likes of Siri, which is in part available now on the iPhone.  Surely this is the path of the future where one can talk to the device and gain an immediate response.  Even Steve Wozniak hinted at this in a television interview on BBC's Click television programme.  I'm sorry there's no definitive answer to your question, but hats off to Gene Roddenberry whose imagination has given inspiration to the makers of our devices that has created a communications world and is infinately getting closer to the audience you are trying to reach out to.

  • Is there a plug-in for Logic Pro that records all live output to disk?

Hi, I noticed Digidesign have a plug in called Flashback which literally records up to 15 minutes of the master audio output for all those 'happy accidents' or when you miss recording a genius solo because it was just a run-through. Is there anything like this for Logic? thanks, Chris

right click on transport bar, select "Customize Transport Bar ...", select "Capture Recording" checkbox.
If you're in cycle mode and playing on an input enabled track, this button will capture the last time through the cycle and place it on the timeline as if you'd been recording with the little red light on. Works for audio and midi.

This is something the app developer enables within airplay mirroring.
There is nothing you can do to enable that.

Can anyone tell me how long does it takes to install Logic Pro x?

You need to drop the Logic Pro x icon into applications, this will then install onto the machine, once installed click on Logic Pro X icon, application will start to download in a matter of minutes, the blue bar will be visible showing the download progress.
When the application is fully installed you can then download all the additional instruments if required.

Please repost in the Final Cut Pro forum. Have you considered upgrading your machine, if you are still running Leopard your machine may be as old as 5 years old. While this should not matter you probably won't get the performance you want out of a demanding app like FCP.

  • I lost my E 71 phone is there any security feature...

i lost my E 71 phone is there any security feature to get SMS when someone replaces SIM

I don't think there is. Even if there was, it'd be a bit late now as you've already lost the phone.
Some security practices to use for mobile phones:
    - Change the default lock/security code of the phone
    - Change the default PIN and PIN2 codes of the SIM card
    - Make sure the PIN code query is enabled when the phone is started
    - Make sure the setting that requires entering the lock/security code at SIM card change is enabled
    - Enable the autolock feature
    - Put a password on the memory card (so that the card cannot be used in another device)
    - Do not install software (applications/games) on your phone from questionable mobile or web sites
    - Do not install software on your phone, which is sent unsolicited (even if it comes from someone you know)
    - Make frequent backups (or otherwise copy/save any data you don't want to lose)
