Is there a TB limit on Macs over USB? Trying to get a 3TB drive to work in a dock over USB and it shows up as a 800Gig drive.

I purchased a StarTech Dual Dock eSata / USB 2.0 model #:SATADOCK22UE.  I've tried using it with 3TB drives and it works fine over eSata, but when I plug it in via USB, the drives show up un-initialized and in disk utility, show up as 800Gig drives.  I contacted StarTech's technical support and they said this is a limitation in Mac's USB chipset.  The max you can plug into USB is 2TB.  Is this correct?  I've never heard of this before.
I have a Mac Pro 3,1, running Mountain Lion.  I tried the dock on a Mac Mini, same thing.

The answer you got is only have right. There are certain limits that limit you to 2.2TB.
It is a limitation in a chipset, but NOT the one in the Mac. It is a limitation of the Enclosure.
The technician who advised you needs additional training.

  • Mac Pro USB and FW800 ports not working

I've been reading tons of forum entries in the Apple Support Community and in other forums.  Nothing seems to answer quite what's going on with my Mac Pro Tower.
Here are the details and steps taken up to now:
    - I'm running a Mac Pro Tower (MacPro 3,1, 2x 2,8GHz Quad Core, Early 2008 model), currently running OS 10.6.8
    - I moved before the holidays in December and left my computer unplugged for over  month while away. Didn't have any issues before the move.
    - up until the last couple of weeks, I had actually been running on Leopard (yes, I'm a luddite!, please, no teasing )
    - I was trying to update my ipod touch's iOS and kept getting errors preventing it from completing the process. At first I thought it was an ipod app causing the issue after having read a few threads on that topic...
    - Also, on startup, the Mac started searching for a Bluetooth keyboard, of which I don't have, and would not detect my usb keyboard.  I would disconnect and reconnect the keyboard and the majority of the time, the Mac would then recognize my USB keyboard.
    - I decided to upgrade to Snow Leopard, which didn't help with the iPod update. I did not do a clean install.
    - Then I noticed that my USB stick wasn't working and tried it in all the usb ports (except the ones on the keyboard)
    - Also, I had removed and then reinstalled printer and scanner drivers for my All-in-one printer. After this I kept getting constant communication errors between the mac and the printer via the usb port, although I was able to print a test page.
    - I've used Hardware Test once which didn't detect any issue.
    - I reset the SMC
    - I reset the PRAM, and for a few seconds I was able to read from my USB stick, then never again, even after another PRAM reset.
    - I've cleaned the whole inside of the computer and checked for loose cables.  Cables are in so tight it's so hard to loosen them!
    - I now tested all the ports:
∞ the 2 front and 3 back USB ports are unresponsive to my usb key and to my VoyagerQ dock
∞ the front and back FW800 ports are unresponsive to my VoyagerQ dock
∞ However, the keyboard works in any fo the back ports and my USB stick is recorgnized by the USB port of the keyboard.
∞ I also plugged in my Logitech webcam into the keyboard and it works there but not in any other port.
∞ When I plug in USB powered speakers into any of the ports, they work fine
∞ And the FW400 ports are also working fine with my VoyagerQ dock
    - a few times, including once today, my mac restarted by itself.  The times before today, I thought it was because I was sort of moving back the computer in place, but today I was nowhere near the computer.
So what does this all mean? Should I do a clean install of the Mac OS? Or is it a problem with my Logic Board?
Any insight please would be helpful.  I had Apple Care and missed the reminder to renew it so I really hoping not to spend more money than necessary.

    Thanks Grant,
The battery is a start and something inexpensive to replace.
I did do a PRAM reset (command + option + P + R) and was able to hear the chime 4 times. I tried resetting it a number of times over the past week, as well as yesterday with no success in reviving the USB ports.  But isn't it weird that my USB powered speakers work by plugging them in any USB port (with the mini jack pugged in the back or front earphone plug)?
I did not use the USB ports on the keyboard until yesterday, so that is not the cause of the other USB and FW800 ports failing. But I'll follow your suggestion and not use them except for the mouse.
Another weird thing that happened yesterday, I have 16GB of RAM and I spent all day trying to troubleshoot a RAM issue that is magically fixed after leaving the computer on overnight to do an extended Hardware Test. The issue was:
    - Only 8 RAMS were being recognized
    - a red LED light appeared on the top riser
    - first I thought I had isolated the faulty RAM bar, and then a second one
    - Then going pair by pair again, I no longer saw the LED light
    - Put back all 8 bars, only 8 GB of RAM recognized
    - Left computer overnight running Hardware test (said it took almost 3 hours, with no errors)
    - Now all 16 GB are recognized!
    Thanks again for the tips

  • How do I get rid of the hover description on the taskbar? Like when you hover over Firefox and it shows the title of the website you're on. It gets in the way of gaming.

I'm a gamer and I play in windowed mode, and every now and then this gets in my way of playing. It's super annoying and I have to either close out Firefox or move my taskbar to the top, which isn't optimal.
I'd like to be able to play in windowed mode, with a browser open if I so need, without accidently hovering over it and causing this stupid tooltip to block the spells I need to use.
    http://i55.tinypic.com/10e25xe.jpg
    That's what I'm talking about.
    I use Windows 7.
    I've disabled the thumbnail previews.
All other taskbar icons have the registry edit that extends hover time so that I have to hover for a long time for it to display, so it's fine.
I've tried the Firefox about:config where I disable the browser.chrome thingy and those things related to that.
Is there any way to get rid of this display that when you hover over the web browser it tells you the name of the page you're on?

    Wade and Monica,
    Thanks for your help.
Wade, it hit me when you asked "why is it a png" file and I realized that I was using the wrong file.  Sometimes its hard to see the forest for the trees!  Problem for banner artwork fixed and I have now used the correct logo file so no more dotted line.
The dotted line only appears on the the png version of the logo.  There's no coloured background on the logo file.  She gave me the file as both an eps and a png file. I'm pretty sure she created the logo in Illustrator.  I've been using the png file for the website, which is what I thought it worked well for.  And the eps one for my print materials.
I have no clue why I grabbed the png instead of the eps logo file I usually use, but thanks for pointing out the obvious since I wasted time trying to fix it and was getting very frustrated at what had suddenly gone "wrong".
I still have that dotted line on the png file of the logo but I'll have to figure that out another day.
    Thanks again!

  • I uploaded photos from my camera card onto my desktop in a folder. I then moved that folder onto my dock just to make things organized, and now that I'm trying to open the folder, there is a huge question mark over it and wont let me see the photos.

I am not sure whats going on! These were photos of my best friends wedding dress, and now they are gone. I erased them off of the camera card I was using from my boyfriend (probably a dumb idea), and now I can't "re-upload" them. Now I feel like I lost them forever. Can someone help??

    Shot in the dark.
Did iPhoto launch? Check iPhoto and see if they in there.
Did you put it on the right side of the dock where the stacks are? Check in Documents.
A folder with a question mark usually means the dock item is no longer connected to an application.

  • TS4363 trying to get exchange mail server to work on my Mac.

What is the External server supposed to be? It works when it wants to and then I can go days with no emails, although I am still getting them to my ipad and iphone

Mail and Exchange can be a bit iffy, but this is usually a problem with the Exchange server. Mail on the Mac uses a different method of communicating with the Exchange server (Exchange Web Services) than do iOS devices (which use ActiveSync), so your Exchange server may be having problems with EWS. I'd suggest you first discuss this with the support resources for your email provider before you spend a lot of time spinning your wheels trying to sort things out on your end.
As a quick test, you can try this Microsoft tool:
    https://testconnectivity.microsoft.com
and see what it reports re. EWS connectivity to your server.

  • Evernote on ipad has my notes. I sync to imac, the program evernote is there. My notes are not. How do I get them to the imac?  Also Evernote refuses my id and password.

Evernote is on a new ipad.  I have made notes.  I plug the ipad into the imac via wire. I run itunes to automatically sync.  I find Evernote in the imac applications folder. It has no notes transferred.  Even more, it asks for id and password and refuses all I try.  I am sure this is fixiable.

Evernote doesn't sync through iTunes sync. It's designed to sync through the Evernote service, that's the whole idea behind it. You need to make sure that your Evernote application on the iPad and the computer login to the same Evernote account and they will synchronize through that account.
If you've forgotten your Evernote account information, go to the Evernote website and go through the "I forgot my password" process. Once you have gotten your username and password straightened out, you can set it up on your computer and iPad and they will be able to login to the Evernote service to sync.

  • Connect 2 macs with USB?

I ordered 2 macbook pros and an imac for my family. i need to transfer their files from the windows pcs to the new macs. what kind of cord do i need and where can i buy one?

Depends a lot on how much stuff you have and whether you are planning on keeping the windows machines.
the Macs all come with wireless networking and gigbit ethernet, and it is reasonably easy to set up a network connection to handle the transfer and for subsequent ongoing communication with the windows computers. On the other hand, if the amount of material is not very great then a nice big memory stick or an external drive is a great way to go (If you get an external, get one with a combined FW and USB interface - FW is much faster on the Macs than USB and you can then use the drive for backups etc).

  • Need simple instructions to connect my piano to my mac using usb midi

I purchased a midi in/out usb connection for my Yamaha piano (clavinova clp120) and GB sees a midi device connected (in preferences) but I cant figure out how to use it...
I need simple step by step help.
    Thanks!

ok, Let me get this correct...
Your piano is already hooked up to the mac via USB and Garage band sees it? correct?
Alright, now, when garageband starts it usually loads the profile for a grand piano or you can select "New Project" > "Piano". If everything goes well you should be able to select the "grand piano" profile and hit record, then you should be able to start playing , do you hear any sound??
If you want to use the LTP lessons then have your piano plugged in and start a lesson. As soon as it loads try hitting a key, do you hear anything??

  • Roll-over message units...there is a limit.

Beware...It is not advertised, but there is a limit of 9,000 message units to AT&T message package.  I reached 8,900 message units after months of renewing and the most recent renewal was unsuccessful because it would take me over the 9,000 limit.  So AT&Ts solution was to allow my message account to go inactive thereby causing me to lose all of those roll-over message units. Basically, they stold $222 from me. Why is there a limit and why should they care if I use them or not.  It is my money they gladly take and as long as I renew every 30 days, it should be kept active. I was given a case number and was told that they would try to resolve this.  I'm still waiting, but does anyone else think that this is a ridiculous idea of having a limit.  I was also told that there is a limit of $500 allowed in a Go Phone plan.  If it reaches that limit, the phone account will be inactivated and you will lose that $500.  Now, THAT is ridiculous.

This was set up as an auto renewal and about 1 week before the renewal, AT&T would send a message that money would be taken from my account and be applied to the message package renewal.  There was no mention that the latest renewal would take me over the "limit". Sorry to rant and be verbose, but this is ridiculous and upsetting that AT&T can inactivate my message account and take my money.  They could have warned me....they certainly know my phone number.  Thanks, AT&T.  Customer service...I think not.

  • Is there a size limit to internal drive?

For some reason I remember there being a size limit for internal drives on the Power Mac, dual 2.0 GHz G5. I have one 250 Gig drive installed, and want to add another 500 gig drive. Will the drive exceed the size limit?
If the size is ok, does anyone have a recommendation for a reliable, reasonably fast 500 gig drive?
    Thanks.

I'm so glad you asked about this. I just bought a G5/1.6 GHz that has an 80GB and I wanted to install a 500 GB second drive but the manual did say that the maximum total between the two drives couldn't be more than a total of 500 GB between the two drives.
Do we know people that have done/are doing this? I use my G5 for audio recording and that's why I wanted a large second drive and I was thinking that since I'd already had the 80 GB drive already in the G5 I'd have to put nothing larger than a 400 GB in the second drive slot so I wouldn't go over that 500 GB limit I read about in the manual.
Excellent news if this really is the case that there's no limit to the size of the additional hard disk.
Since we're on this topic, (I realize this is probably covered elsewhere), but does this same theory apply regarding the 4 GB memory limit that Apple states in the owners manual for the G5 1.6 GHz model?
It's got four DIMM slots for a maximum of 4GB using four 1 GB DIMMS.
Is it possible to use four 2 GB DIMMS and get 8 GB of memory running in these earliest G5's?
The other two other models of the G5 that were released with the 1.6 Ghz were the 1.8 GHz and the Dual 2.0 GHz G5's and they have eight DIMM slots and are capable of using 8 GB.
So I was wondering if this too was due to Apple not having access to 2 GB DIMM memory modules back in those days (2003) that would have allowed the G5/1.6GHz models to run with 8 GB RAM installed in four slots?
Thanks guys, really glad I found this post before I bought a smaller hard disk because of what I read in the manual.
    Best,
    John

  • IS it possible to share external hard drive Mac To Mac, over a PC network,

I would like to explain this situation in it's own post so it's clear. I am at my brother's house (PC user) and both my wife and I are Mac users who are on the network. I have an external hard drive which is plugged directly into my wife's Macbook. I am trying to access it from my Macbook pro. This is my first time sharing and this is what I have done:
I went into "sharing" on her Macbook and turned file sharing on.
I added the mounted drive as a 'shared folder' and made everyone able to read and write.
Under 'options' I checked all of the boxes, including AFT, SMB and FTP (was I suppose to do this?)
Now, when I am on my Macbook Pro I look at the network and I see the PC network server, and her Macbook there (along with another weird network folder called "Mac001ff3cdf6ff", which I'll get to in a minute)
When I click on her computer and connect, I see the folders there which I've previously been able to share.
However, there is no external drive to be seen, even though it is mounted on her desktop of her Macbook downstairs.
When I go back and connect to this strange network folder called "Mac001ff3cdf6ff", however, I see again all the folders that I see when I click on my wife's Macbook folder AND the external hard drive..which is great...BUT, why can't I see this when I click on her Macbook folder? I did notice too that the icon is a PC icon for "Mac001ff3cdf6ff" when I click on 'more info, says "PC server".
Does this mean that the only way for me to access the external hard drive is through a PC server and this is the 'long way around' to get into the external drive? And why can't I connect directly from my wife's Macbook icon in the network folder?
Help please! Thank you. I hope this is more clear.

Is there anyone out there who has had success with sharing an external hard drive over a network from Mac to Mac? I just can't figure this out! It's so weird. When I look in the network places I see the icon for my wife's computer, and the PC ones of my brother in law's drives connected to the network. And ONE of those PC icons (you know, the one with the blue screen of death on them?) is labeled with "mac934ffsg" or something similar. I've been experimenting and when I add the hard drive in "shared", or if I add another folder in 'shared' on her computer it is THIS icon in the network that is updated.
Does anybody come close to my situation? Is there anyone sharing a couple different Macs over a network set up with PC's?
    This is driving me batty...
