Is there any way to track a stolen laptop using the mac address, or by triangulating the wifi, or even by checking to see if the macbooks serial number has been registered online anywhere?
A little info on my question,
I had it stoeln on June 22nd 2013. I had recently bought it so had not installed any software on it nor did I have registered with icloud. I had contacted police, registered it stolen with Apple (but then just discovered this week that apple do not have a database for stolen products, which makes no sense at all).
I have contacted all the major pawn shops and computer stores in town etc etc. I have recently discovered that each laptop has a unique MAC address whcih begs the question, is that traceable somehow? I have been made aware that the router strips the mac address before it connects it to the internet but does the isp log the laptops MAC address? If i contacted all the major isp in my country would they have the ability to search for the mac address of my latop and then link that with an ip address?

Every machine has a unique serial number what I was getting at is there must be some way to track the serial number and for example if the theif logged onto facebook using a stolen machine, if there were a register of stolen equipment then red flags would pop up, you know what I mean?
Well, I hadn't heard of that before. If it's true, then what you say should also be true but the Mac would have to publish its hardware serial number over the Internet and I haven't heard of that either. The only Apple tech that is supposed to constantly track you is iCloud.
You said you assumed the database would limit use online but if that's only an assumption, you need to ask Apple what exactly the stolen database does. It is possible that the serial number might only get flagged if it comes into an Apple Store for service, if it ever does. You need to clarify this with Apple.

On your Mac, login to iCloud.com, & try to locate your phone. This requires that Find My Phone be setup/activated, on your phone, before you lost it. It also requires your phone be turned on & connected to the Internet. There is no other way to locate a lost iPhone, other than physically looking for it.

Thank you for your time!If you did not activate Find my iPhone when you set up the iPad/iPhone, there is no way of tracking them. Having installed the Find my Phone app is not necessary and it is irrelevant as that app is for tracking other lost iDevices.
Log in to your iCloud account via the iCloud website. Do you see the stolen devices? Do the show up on the device list? If so, the Find my Phone is active and you will be able to track them if they connect to the internet. If not, they are gone. -

The only way to locate any lost/stolen iPhone is through Find My Phone or a similar app. However, this requires that Find My Phone be setup/activated, on your phone, before it was lost/stolen. You would then login at iCloud.com & try to locate it. This requires the phone be turned on & have an Internet connection. There is no other way to locate a lost/stolen iPhone. Apple can't/won't help you, nor will your carrier. Report the loss to the Police, your carrier & Insurance company. Change all of your passwords.

Unless you had it registered with Find My Mac via iCloud or installed third-party anti-theft software, there is no way to track it. If you need to, take precautions by canceling credit cards, checking accounts, etc. from which financial and personal data can be used to steal your money or identity. If you had it covered by insurance report it to the insurance company. Terminate your old email address and get a new one.
Otherwise, you are out the computer and whatever is on it. -

Is there a way to track a stolen ph with a special ID ???The IMEI number is unique to the phone. If you give this to your carrier they can often use it to blacklist the device, preventing it from being used on their network. Technically they could probably also locate it if it's on their network, but I don't think they would do this without being instructed to do so by the police or a court order.

The backup of your iPod Touch would include your camera roll photos. Restoring the backup to another iPod Touch or iPhone would recover them. Photos will not be restored by restoring the backup to an iPad.
Note: Apple deletes iCloud backups after 180 days of inactivity so be sure to do this before then. -

No app is required.
- If you previously turned on FIndMyiPod on the iPod in Settings>iCloud and wifi is on and connected go to iCloud: Find My iPhone, sign in and go to FIndMyiPhone. If the iPod has been restored it will never show up.
- You can also wipe/erase the iPod and have the iPod play a sound via iCloud.
- If not shown, then you will have to use the old fashioned way, like if you lost a wallet or purse.
- Change the passwords for all accounts used on the iPod and report to police
- There is no way to prevent someone from restoring the iPod (it erases it) using it.
- Apple will do nothing without a court order
