I was wondering if you could do things like this using Aperture.
If you can, then how do I go about doing something like this to a picture?

No, all edits in Aperture are global to the entire photograph. To desaturate part of a photograph you need a layer mask. This is where photoshop comes into play. Of course the right click "open in external editor" from within makes this quite easy and keeps the edited photo right along side the original nice and neatly organized. I treat photoshop as a giant aperture plug-in.

I like to use the new TC in my office as a time machine on a Windows Server. Is this possible, and how do i configure this?
In fact my plan is to make the first back up by connecting to the server via an ethernet cable, but thereafter i like to bring the TC to my home and perform the incremental backups over the internet. This is for safety reasons, in case for example the office is broken into, or flooded, or fire (god forbid).
I sincerely hope it is possible, and not complicated.
Alternatively i would not mind replacing our current Windows server 2003 with an Apple server, but all computers in the network (except mine) are Windows 7 or 8. Would it work?

It is a NAS.. it is designed to provide a cheap centralised file storage.

A file server like windows uses heaps of power to do very little.. in your setup.. In most setups like SBS it will do exchange server and provide a heap of useful connectivity to your clients.
Since you are not using the windows server in anything but simple file serving you can replace with a NAS..
Problem with the TC is, it is a router with a hard disk inside.. designed specifically for Time Machine.. it fails to provide what a NAS does.. easy access to any clients, local or remote.. TC is designed by apple for apple and the rest of world is not really invited to the party.
It provides no backup.. no data protection.. and is so specifically apple orientated I do not think it works at all well with windows.
For a simple example.. windows will have file issues with large files.. because it is only NTserver FAT32 to windows.. bad luck if you have large files.. !!
Plainly if you use active directory in windows that facility is gone.
I just like Apple products, find them more stable than Windows and easier to use. Plus i can access the server from home if it is an Apple Server.
If you only need remote access for yourself that is fine.. too bad for the windows clients I guess.
Or you open it up to the world and bad luck for security.
Apple do not design for mixed environment.. in fact with the TC there is no provision for windows access officially at all.. so anything you do is a fudge.
You can use the TC for your Mac backups within the network.. that is fine. Apple provide no software at all to help with your windows clients. -

Is what you're saying that you only want backups in TM of the state of your Mac from January 2015 to the current date and nothing before then? I'd think the simplest solution would just be to delete in TM all the backups prior to 1/15 and then let TM do its thing. The ultimate source for all things Time Machine is here. On this page, note the comment that "Time Machine will never delete the backup copy of anything that was on the disk being backed-up at the time of any remaining backup" which I understand to mean that if you delete all the backups in the TM file prior to 1/15, any file that wasn't present on your Mac as of 1/15 will no longer be represented in the TM file. Note that the second link also has instructions for how to delete TM files.

I would like to edit web journal themes. Is this possible in Aperture 3?
I am making a website to display photos of coral species, and I need the following flexibility from the web journal page. A) is it possible to edit the web journal themes within Aperture, and/or B) is it possible for an html programmer to take the outputs from the Aperture web journal export (folder), and programme these externally?
- multiple hierarchical headers, with a different header for each page (ie. a different species name per page)
- different sized photographs, on individual pages.
- option to include custom metadata fields in the web pages

The themes are located in the Aperture application bundle under Contents/Resources/WebThemes in subfolders by theme name. A good html progamer shouldn't have to much trouble figuring out whats what.

is it possible to take 2 portrait style photos and make them them the same dimensions of 1 landscape style photo?

I had to do that in photoshop, which is super annoying. Hopefully there is a much qucker way to do that in Aperture.
(The reason I have to size them like that is for my blog....I'd like it to be the same deminsions as the landscape photos on the site.)
Hopefully the pros around here know a way to make a happen.

You could set up a print Preset of two images and save the file as a PDF.You might find either the "Web Journal" or "Web Page" Albums allow you to produce something useful for your blog.
To print side-by-side you don't need to create a "Web Journal" or "Web Page" first. Just select the two pictures that you want to combine, then enter "cmd-P" and in the Print-panel select "Sequence" and set the parameters and save the preset for future use. Then press "Print" and select "Save pdf to Aperture" if you want to fine-tune the combined image in Aperture, or "Save as pdf" if you want an external file. -
Is this possible? View photos in full screen and navigate using cursor
Recent convert from PC. Love the mac thus far but this is driving me crazy. What I am trying to do is to view pictures (in a folder) in full screen and be able to navigate either using the left-right cursor or some kind of buttons on the screen. Here's what I did:
1) Intuitively, I double clicked on one of pics. It brings up Preview. So far so good. Able to view full screen but wait! There's no way to go the the next or previous pics. Ok I get it Preview is supposed to 'simply preview' a doc/pic. It is not a full fledge image viewing application.
2) Few Googles later, I learned about quicklook. Easy enough, I pressed the spacebar and can see the pictures. Left-right cursor works! But wait! It stops when you view the last picture in the row (i.e. it doesn't go the next row). Huh?
3) Few Googles later. I learned about using the 'tab' instead. Very nice...I can now browse pics on the next rows...BUT...how do I go back?
4) Few Googles later. I learned about using the 'shift tab' to go back (now this is getting annoying). Fine, now that I've nailed navigation 101, how do I view the pics in full screen? Quicklook only utilize like 50% of the screen. I don't think it is possible....so back to square one.
5) More Googles later. I learned about "command a" to select all pictures and then "enter". This will open Preview with all the pictures and presto the left-right cursor works, a left-right icon appears and voila the "full screen" icon is available.
Can some expert/genius please tell me if I am too stupid to use a Mac or that Windows 7 is indeed a more superior os.Thomas thanks. I think we (mostly I) are beating on a dead horse here. I guess I had figured out the answer from the get-go but is simply ranting. Windows may be a crappy os but when it comes to picture viewing, it is more intuitive.
Now that I've figured out that the "solution" is to select all and then open in preview. Another question came up...what if I want to start viewing and navigating from the middle of the pack? Assuming I have a 100 pics, and I "open" pic 50. Using preview on a single pic wont' let me navigate as you had mentioned. Quicklook allows tab/shift tab but not full screen. The "select all then open in preview" won't cut it since it will start from pic 1. Selecting just pic 50 to 100 then preview works but won't allow you to view pic 49 and before. -
I want to use my mini iPad as a satnav. I have tomtom installed and have purchased a tomtom mkii GPS Bluetooth receiver. Can I connect to the gps without jail breaking my iPad. I'd rather not if I can avoid it.
How do I configure the AX to connect to the hub's wireless network? It will only scan one base station Airport Express at a time in the Airport Utility. I think what I am trying to do is use the hub as a router to the two AX's. Is there a specific way to set this up?
To set up the AX to join a wireless network as a "Wireless Client," using the AirPort Utility, either connect to the AX's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, try these settings:
Launch the AirPort Utility.
Select the AX.
If not already connected to the AX's wireless network, go ahead and switch to it when prompted.
AirPort Utility > Select the AX > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless
Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
Network Name: <type in the network name/SSID of the wireless network that you want to join or select it from the pop-up menu>
Wireless Security: None OR, if you are using security on your wireless network:
Wireless Security: <Select the appropriate level of security for the existing wireless network: WPA/WPA2 Personal | WPA2 Personal>
Password: <enter your wireless network security password>
Verify Password: <re-enter the same security password>
Click Update to write the new settings to the AX. -
How to move Aperture photos to Qnap
I have aQnap server to backup my computers and photos. I cannot use iPhoto to see the albums as they are in iPhoto. Is this possible with Aperture or photoshop ?
Check out the Discussion Forums http://forum.qnap.com and Help on the QNAP web site and the ones you can access once you log into your QNAP in Safari. There are lots of suggestions and guidelines to help you. Also check out the videos on youtube that they offer.
Aperture and Iphoto use the same physical Library now, so you will not see a difference in behaviour.
Photoshop does not have a Library like Aperture or iPhoto and also does not provide any way of managing your versions or your collection of photos. Everything would be manuayl done by you.
I think the best solution is to keep your iPhoto Library on your local hard drive (or external expansion drive if you need more space) and back it up with TimeMachine to your NAS or an external hard drive. TimeMachine backups are supported by QNAP. You should also do periodic back-ups to an external drive that you can keep in a safety deposit box in case of fire or theft of your equipment. -

No. You can redeem Gift cards directly in the Store Apps by tapping the "Redeem" button next to your Apple ID. Usually found at the bottom of the different tabs in the Store Apps.
You can set your payment method to none.
In fact that's what I do. I have no payment option set, and stick exclusively to gift cards. -
I have an iPod touch that I often use to manage different events for work. I have been able to sync the events on my calendar from my MacBook Pro to the iPod touch successfully using wifi. What I really need to do though is sync my iPod calendar events to my MacBook Pro calendar. Is this possible? How do I set this up? It would be a huge help if I could transfer the events on my iPod calendar to my computers calendar. I currently have the wifi sync option on and have turned on the sync calendars option in iTunes. After she has created a new Apple ID, on her iPhone go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > Apple ID.

She signs back in at the same location with her new Apple ID to register her iPhone phone number with her new Apple ID and this will prevent her ex from having access to all iMessages that she sends and receives. -

Share Aperature Photo Library. IS THIS POSSIBLE???

Currently, I have an iMac with an Ext HD where my Aperture photos reside. The Aperture library itself resides on the iMac, and the photos are all externally referenced.
I need to be able to use another computer to edit/work with the photos (ie my MacBook Pro).
Is it possible for me to access my "master photo library" using my Aperture running on my MBP or using Aperture running on my iMac to work with a given photo - so that changes I make via the MBP will be seen when I later look at the pix via the iMac?

That means that if one copy of Aperture is doing Complex Task A and another copy is doing Complex Task B they each might see the database beneath them as "corrupted" and in an inconsistent state. As an example, imagine a piece of code which was going to rotate all the pictures in a particular project. It gets a count of how many pictures, then gets the first image, then the second, etc. Imagine another copy of Aperture rearranging the photos in that particular project, moving some to a different project and reordering the others. What will the first think when it asks for picture 137 and the database says there is no such picture? What will happen if it rotates picture 99 and then the other instance adds a new picture at position 98, so that when it asks for picture 100 it ends up getting the same picture it already rotated as picture 99?
In other words, at least in theory, yes, it's crossing the beams. Just don't do it. -

There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps. If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later: You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File: a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected. 3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
