Is virtual hosting possible on Mac Mini OSX 10.8.5?

I have a Macmini4,1 with an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz processor with 8 GB Memory. I want to use it as a webserver for half a dozen websites with fully qualified domain names running as virtual domains under one IP address. They have been running fine on an older Mac Mini with 4 GB Memory running OSX Server 10.5.4 for several years, but I'm afraid that machine is going to curl up and die shortly.
I have purchased the 'new" $20 Server App 2.2.1, but I'm not convinced it's capable of handling them, and if it is it's sorely lacking instructions.
What server software should I use with the newer computer?

With Apache directly or via Server.app (Mountain Lion) or Server Admin (Snow Leopard Server) you can define a website to be a normal http unencrypted site, or a https encrypted site. For unencrypted http sites you do not have to have a certificate.
It is also possible to generate your own self-signed certificate although this would not be user friendly in this scenario. What might be a more worthwhile possibility if needed is that you can be what is called a 'wildcard' certificate e.g. *.domain.com i.e. anything.domain.com however it sounds like in your case you want multiple domains rather than multiple hosts so this would not perhaps help you.
So to confirm
http://www.domain1.com/
http://www.domain2.co.uk/
would not need a certificate.

  • Mac Mini OSX 10.6.5 config w/ cable/modem-AEBS-mac mini server

I'm new to OSX server, and have recently had to change locations of a OSX 10.6.5 Mac Mini. I am setting it up now as a home server and need to access from outside the home. I have had a wonderfully operating AEBS for many years, but once I started trying to set-up the mac mini server, I started having problems configuring the server to play nicely with the AEBS.
Back to basics, because for what I need the AEBS is sufficient (and technically capable) of acting in concert with my mini server (from all I've read, anyway). I just cannot configure them correctly without causing problems.
    Equipment:
    AEBS w/ version 7.4.1
    Mac Mini OSX 10.6.5
    iMac OSX 10.6.5
    (2) MacBook Pros 10.6.5
    (2) iPhones IOS 4.2
I have a static (known) IP from my ISP. I have no problem with configuring the AEBS to work with everything, until I plug in the mac mini. I realize the older configuration for the prior server set-up is incorrect, but making minor adjustments for moving to a AEBS from the Cisco UC500 set-up has been greater than my technological experience.
I am versed in networking, but cannot seem to get the correct configuration, and the only thing the Apple manuals have is a 'possibility' this can be done, but no specifics I can find for controlling the AEBS settings from the mac mini when connected on the LAN port of the AEBS (that's when the problems start).
Here's where I've tried and cannot access the Serv Admin program when I connect the mac mini to the AEBS LAN port:
    (1) changed AEBS Connection sharing to Share a public ip address
(which I understand makes "advanced" "port mapping" possible)
    (2) set AEBS Internet connection to connect to router on 192.168 network
    (3) set AEBS to offer DHCP in 10.0.1 range
    (4) set AEBS capsule own address to be 10.0.1.1
PLUG in ethernet cable to Mac Mini and Time Capsule
    Activate Ethernet and deactivate Airport
    (5) set Mac Mini Server Manual ip address to 10.0.1.2
    (6) set Mac Mini Server DNS addresses to 127.0.0.1, 10.0.1.1
    (7) set Mac Mini Server / Server Admin / DNS / Zones / Machine name / IP Address = 10.0.1.2
Any advice on where to start trouble-shooting?

The AEBS gets your public static IP address, and otherwise performs NAT.
(The AEBS is a good home box, but not a server-grade firewall. I do run AEBS and Time Capsule boxes, but these are generally operated as WiFi Access Points (what Apple calls "bridging"), and not as WiFi routers, and definitely not as server gateways.)
The AEBS DHCP server configuration for DNS services is set with the IP address of your new server; that's your DNS server now. Caution: +There are no references to ISP DNS nor other DNS servers.+ You're running DNS (well, you will be soon), so your local network will be configured differently than a client network.
Your Mac Mini Server is configured in a /24 subnet in one of the private blocks (eg: 10.0.0.0/8) somewhere. This for future VPNs, as everything on the planet is crammed in a few 192.168.0.0/16 subnets.
The AEBS DHCP server can be used to pass out a pool of addresses in that private /24, but the server must have a static IP address.
[Get your DNS services going for your LAN now.|http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/1436] Don't skip this step. DNS is essential to servers, and you'll be serving DNS on your LAN. I'd suggest a real and registered domain here or a subdomain of a real and registered domain, as changing domain names on a network is an increasing pain in the rump as the network scales up.
For DNS services, your Mac Mini (and only your Mac Mini) will refer only to itself via the 127.0.01 on its network controller. (This is an odd case; the box is referring to itself, so it's the IP loopback address and not your LAN static IP address.) Everything else on your LAN will refer to the static IP address of your Mac Mini DNS server either via static configuration, or via the AEBS DHCP server's DNS setting referencing your Mac Mini server that are received from the DHCP server with a dynamic address.
Work your way up to configuring Open Directory (LDAP), and Kerberos, then configure the rest of the accouterments.

  • 10.3.9  on my G5 to 10.4.2 from my Mac Mini OSX Installer DVD

    Hi everyone,
Here is my situation. I have a G5 currently running 10.3.9 which is my main computer for all my work. I purchased a Mac Mini not too long ago as a back up/special task computer that runs 10.4.2.
I just purchased Techtool Pro 4, and it requires 10.4 as a requirement.
What I would like to do is use my Mac Mini OSX 10.4.2 install disc to put 10.4.2 onto my G5. Does anyone think this would cause a problem because the disc came with and says it's for the Mac Mini? I don't know all that much about these new operating systems, so I apologize in advance if this is a really dumb question. Any insight would be greatly appreciated, as I would love to get the Tech Tool up and running on my G5. Thanks in advance for all your help.
    PA Chris
G5/ Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   G5 runs OSX 10.3.9- Mac Mini runs 10.4.2

Several reasons why this is not possible.
If your Mini has an Intel processor, the OS X install package that shipped with the Mini cannot be used on a Mac with a PPC processor but regardless, the install package that ships with a new Mac purchase is model and build specific and cannot be used to install OS X on another Mac.
Even if this were possible, it would be a violation of the single use license agreement.
If you want to install Tiger on your G5, you need to purchase a Tiger retail install package which can be used to install Tiger on any Mac model that meets the minimum system requirements for Tiger.

  • My Adobe Flash CS6 Color Picker has ODD colors. I'm using Mac Mini OSX 10.8.1. Is there a fix?

My Adobe Flash CS6 Color Picker has ODD colors. I'm using Mac Mini OSX 10.8.1. Is there a fix?
I click on the color picker and where I have seen the normal #0000ff blue color on my windows computer, this mac Mountain lion version shows a purple-ish color. Oddly, If I enter the hex # into the color picker, and use it as a fill, the correct color displays on the stage but when i use the eyedropper on that color, it shows it as the purple color again on the toolbar.
I've seen a similar thing like this happen when using adobe photoshop. However, the usual solution is to just make the managed color profile set to monitor RGB. The only downside with Flash is there is no preference to set that. The color palette in Adobe Photoshop displays as it should with the correct blue.
I should also note that I'm using a Samsung 941bw monitor with my mac mini which could also be part of the problem.
I figured i'd make this post anyway just in case it's the OS & Adobe Flash CS6 and not the monitor.
I've included a screenshot as well that shows that i've chosen the purple color and then made a rectangle shape on the stage and it comes out blue.
    Thanks ahead for your response(s)

Seems misleading that on the adobe site for Adobe Flash CS6 it says:
    System requirements:
Mac OS X v10.6.8 or v10.7. Adobe Creative Suite 5, CS5.5, and CS6 applications support Mac OS X Mountain Lion (v10.8) when installed on Intel based systems.**

  • Hi I installed a new hard drive in my Mac mini osx lion an when I turn it on I get a flashing file with a question mark. I tried holding command and R keys when turning it on but the recovery fails to work. Does any one know how I can get it to recover?

Hi I installed a new hard drive in my Mac mini osx lion an when I turn it on I get a flashing file with a question mark. I tried holding command and R keys when turning it on but the recovery fails to work. I can hold the option key at start up and choose my network, then Internet recovery shows up with an arrow pointing up. When I click on the arrow Internet recovery fails and all I get is a globe with a triangle on it with an exclamation mark on it, and under that it says
    apple.com/support
          -6002F
Does any one know how I can fix this without a recovery disc? Thanks

I just want to add to this, in case someone else searches for this error on Apple Support (google doesnt cover apple support.. how clever is that?)
I had the same error. And i had a Computer that had worked, with a SSD drive and 16GB upgrade done by the owner himself.
I tried swapping with a Mechinal Harddrive, no luck.
Kept the Mechanical drive in, and tried with some other Ram, it worked..
So for me this error and after reading the other responses can be boiled down to a Harddrive problem or Ram issue.
    It was Ram for me..

how do I load an AU instrument (Garritan ARIA player) into Logic Pro X on a Mac Mini OSX 10.8.5 ?

You install the player .component in the Library/Audio/Plug Ins/Components folder (though an installer probably does that for you) and install(er) the sample content wherever you want, then you start Logic (the new plug in will be validated during startup), open or create a project, create/use a software instrument track, instantiate the player in an Instrument slot, and in the player itself you choose the sound(s) you want to play and load those.

  • Why do new hard drives keep failing in Mac Mini OSX Server?

Why new new hard drives keep failing in Mac Mini OSX server?

If it only failed in 8 days.. I just return the drives back to newegg and get a different brand like western digital. NewEgg has a 30 day return policy.
If you deal with any hard drive manufacturer now, they will give you a refurbished item and not a new item that you are entitled.
    As for testing  hardware....
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
even if it still passed Apple tests.. it does not mean logicboard is fine..... it just means it passes the tests.
At this point, If i were you, I would just go back to NewEgg and send back the Seagates letting know they are bad and prefer a different brand such as Western Digital.
Install the Western Digitals and see how long they last. If they fail again in a a short amoung of time, it's the logicboard then.
This is based on experience in dealing with repairs with Macs, PCs, and other various kinds of Servers and computers over the last 10+ years.
In fact, One of my clients who has a Dual 4-core Intel Xeon Server with a Supermicro logicboard, one of their SATA drive ports are bad. Every 4 months like clock work the Mirror RAID Drive would degrade on that port. Then after figuring out that the drives are not necessary bad, I swapped to using another spare  SATA port and since then no problems.

  • Have Mac Mini osx 10.4.5 and need to fax on my DSL..

H\I have Mac Mini osx 10.4.5 and need to fax on my DSL..
Have DSL. Currently have inoperative Os9.2 imac plugged in to fax in the past, and my Mac Mini into dsl. What do I need to fax from the Mac Mini?
Visually impaired, I need instructions for someone else to set it up all over again, both lines out of mac Mini. Other discussions do not seem to be what I am looking for. I used something like faxstd I think. Not available for osX. What do I need? Thanks. Jack

Thanks. Now I think that I understand that my mac mini did not come equipped with a modem at all as I thought it would. So, I need to purchase something else now. I've already added several, at considerable cost. Little did I think that all these would be needed. Speakers, an iMic for recording sound. Now I wonder if I need another voice program to read text for me (not totally blind, so I don't enjoy constant comment about page names, http:// etc. I do love "Constant Comment Green Tea," however. And, in my old age, I enjoyed knowing about PhotoDeluxe, and can't use it on my Mac Mini. All these things to do differently is driving me nuts. The dsl modem was provided by my dsl line service. It seems strange that any commercially produced computer would be this incomplete. My old iMac had an internal modem. And, this new Apple does not? Strange. • How to make Mac OS X virtual machine on my mac mini?

    Dear All,
I've just bought mac mini device, upgraded my memory (now I have 16GB).
The mac os was already installed on this device, and there were NO DVR or blue-ray media in the box which contains the installation of the OS X.
Now I want to install  VirtualBox, WMWare or other virtualization (still don't know which one to select)
and I want to create a guest machine with the same OS X.  As far as I know, the license on OS X permits to run OS X guest under OS X host.
But here is the question:  the VirtualBox software will ask me "give me a disk with installation of OS", where shall I get this disk?
What shall I give to the virtual machine software to install the same OS X that is running on my mac mini?
    Regards,
    Ihor.

Actually, with Parallels9, if you have OSX Lion or later
as the host OS, you can create an OSX VM with no disks
and just an internet connection.   Parallels will utilize
the RecoveryHD on the host and do an internet recovery
to the create the VM.  If you have fast internet, this is the
    simplest approach.
If you have previously purchased Lion or Mountain Lion,
you can redownload the installer and extract the install image
from the package.  Then, with Parallels anyway, when prompted for
an install disk , you select the image.
As far as licensing, running Lion, Mountain Lion, and Mavericks
in a virtual machine does not violate the EULA as long as
the VM is run on Apple hardware.
    From the EULA for Lion
(iii) to install, use and run up to two (2) additional copies or instances of the Apple Software
within virtual operating system environments on each Mac Computer you own or control that
is already running the Apple Software.
    From the EULA for Mavericks:
(iii) to install, use and run up to two (2) additional copies or instances of the Apple
Software within virtual operating system environments on each Mac Computer you own
or control that is already running the Apple Software, for purposes of: (a) software
development; (b) testing during software development; (c) using OS X Server; or (d)
    personal, non-commercial use.

  • Mac mini OSX Tiger 10.4.11 Upgrade options?

    Dear All,
    I am confused.
I have a mac mini 1.1 Intel Core Duo 1.83GHz with 2 GB RAM. (which i bought June 2007 and upgraded)
Its currently running OSX Tiger 10.4.11.
I have lost the original disks that shipped with the mac and I want to erase and install the OS so it like its brand new again. Over the years I have installed loads of rubbish programs etc and just want to back up itunes and iphoto and start from new.
Is it possible to just buy the latest OS Mountain Lion on disk for about £15 and perform an erase and install?
What confuses me is: someone mentioned that i have to purchase each of the OSs (so 10.5, 10.6 and so on) this seems a bit extreme as I dont want to upgrade, but install fresh.
    Any advice is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

Core Duo won't work for beyond 10.6.8.
    If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.
You need to get 10.6 & update to 10.6.8 first to be able to buy it from the App Store & download it.
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least, more if you can afford it)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...

It's been pulled from the online store, so you have to call Apple to buy it, last I heard, but quick, call before it's gone!

    Lion/101.7 System requirements
        •    x86-64 processor (Macs with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, Intel Core i7, or Xeon processor.)
        •    At least 2GB of memory, I say 6 GB
        •    Latest version of Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8), with the Mac App Store installed
        •    At least 4GB of disk space for downloading, I say 50 GB.
Like Snow Leopard, Lion does not support PowerPC-based Macs (e.g., Power Macs, PowerBooks, iBooks, iMacs (G3-G5), eMacs).
Lion also does not support 32-bit Intel Core Duo or Core Solo based Macs. Rosetta is no longer available in Lion, which means Lion no longer supports PowerPC applications.
