Issue connecting to Vista peer from OS X, XP and Windows 7

Hi, I've got the following problem.
Got a bunch of OS X, XP, Vista and Windows 7 machines sitting on standard NetGear LAN. The router has a static IP and is running NAT for the clients. There is a firewall to Internet (Firebrick).
There are no problems connecting between the OS X, XP, Windows 7 machines. However, you cannot connect to the Vista peers, except in some special cases.
To simplify I'm using the standard file sharing example. Calling the following method:
private function connectReceiveStreamToPeer(e:Event):void
recieveStream = new NetStream(netConnection,txtFarID.text);
recieveStream.client = this;
recieveStream.addEventListener(NetStatusEvent.NET_STATUS, receiveStreamHandler);
recieveStream.play("file");
where txtFarID.text represents a Vista peer, never results in the receive stream becoming connected to the Vista peer's sendStream...
However, there is a connection. If the Vista peer first connects its receiveStream to the sendStream of the OS X, XP or Windows 7 peer, then the OS X, XP or Windows 7 peer is thereafter able to connect its receiveStream to the sendStream of the Vista peer.
I've tested this on a couple of Vista laptops. Both are completely standard and don't have any special security software installed.
Any ideas?
Best, Dominic

this is most likely a local firewall issue on the the Vista computer combined with your NAT not doing hairpinning.  please see Matthew Kaufman's detailed treatment of the NAT/firewall issue at

  • How do i set a peer to peer network between my iMac and windows machines?

    I want to set up a peer to peer network between my iMac and Windows based computers in my house.  I also want it to a wireless set up.  Mostly being done to share videos, pictures, and music. Any insight would be appreciated.

    I'm trying to connect my MacBook Pro to Wifi using internet sharing
    Why?
    Just connect the MacBook to the same internet as your iMac.
    MacBook > Wi-Fi router > Internet.
    You are connected to the internet with your iMac.
    iMac > Wi-Fi router > Internet
    Why do you want to go MacBook (via Wi-Fi)  > iMac > Wi-Fi router > Internet?

  • Issues connecting to FTP sites from OS/X Computers

    Hello,
    I have a network that is mixed with Windows and OS/X Lion, Snow Leopard machines. We access external FTP servers to download files that are needed. None of my OS/X machines are able to connect to the FTP servers while all of my Windows machines are able to without a problem. What is even more strange is that if I attemp to connect to the server using a port such as 221 instead of 21, waiting for it to fail, and then connecting on 21, it works.
    Our network is using private ip addresses and the firewall is a Firebox appliance.

After setting manually, I am now seeing OBIEE driver in user DSN. So is all other 32 bitapplications like MS Acess, Excel, etc., are all in user dsn.
    When I open OBIEE Administration tool, I can only see ONLY Analytics Web and nothing else. How do I connect to Oracle database. Please assist me.

    Hi,
    Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
    As per your comment, they have Remote Desktop client v5.2 and I suspect that due to this reason they can’t connect the remote session as the version if very old. We need to use latest RDP version to connect successfully. Also please check the certificate which
    is used by server, please check below article for information.

  • Trying to connect to my Network from a new printer and my daughter's new pc

    I have never been the most fluent of computer people, but Apple always seemed to make things easy. Now, however I am stumbling. My daughter's got a Compaq laptop with built in wireless capability and altho' it registers full bars on my airport extreme and express network, I can't seem to connect. It says I need a "network security key, or passphrase" for my network. I have put in the password that I use, but it makes no difference. I have searched, but probably not thoroughly enough or in the right places, and have made no progress. The same problem happens with my new hp, wireless printer. Is there anybody out there with an answer to this very frustrating problem?

    Hello, and thank you for responding. I am sorry that I haven't posted more info. Here goes.
    I am on both a mac book pro and a Mac 10 OS X 10.4.11 desk top. My daughter's new pc uses Windows Vista Home Premium. It's the most basic compaq laptop. She has found other things, but not how to connect. It just always comes up with the same message about Network Security Key or passphrase. The same message appears when I try to log on to the wireless network with the printer even after following the instructions. My airport base station is at the bottom of the house, but throughout I have airport express to keep the signal high. If other mac users come round and log on they just have to put in my password, but this doesn't seem to work. I'm afraid I don't even know how to turn off my password. Sorry. If you can still help I'd be delighted.

    Hi Darknight,
    What is it you want to find once you are connected? Since you posted this in the Database Connectivity forum I assume you want to connect to some DB or flat file on that server? If it's a DB then use the client to connect from windows. If it's a flat file then you should be able to use whatever connection utility you use to see the file system from windows. I don't know Unix so not sure but need more details.
    Thank you

  • Issues with Mac OS X Server 10.4.8 and Windows File sharing

    We are having lots of issues with our SMB share on Mac OS X Server 10.4.8. The main issues are the following:
    - Group ACLs seem to not work properly, and I have had to add dozens of manual permissions on a per-user basis
    - Often, users open a file in read-only mode, without any reason, and can't modify it
    - Often, users open a file with full write access, but then cannot save it and have to use a "save as function".
    After having looked all over the Internet and on the Apple's discussions forum, it seems like this issue has been around for quite some time now:
    http://discussions.apple.com/search.jspa?forumID=702&threadID=&q=smbANDpermissions&objID=f702&dateRange=thisyear&userID=&numResults=15&rankBy=10001
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1546867&#1546867
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=647251
    And no real answer/solution has been provided by Apple yet.
    I also looked on Samba related pages, and it seems like these issues were Samba related (both ACL/OpenLDAP and Microsoft Office file handling issues), and the current version of Samba (3.0.23c) seem to have solved lots of issues in these areas:
    http://us1.samba.org/samba/history/samba-3.0.23c.html
    Apple ships Samba 3.0.10 (16 Dec 2004) with 10.4.8, which makes the shipping version at list 15 versions (and 18 months) behind the current Samba release (30 Aug 2006).
    People within the company are obviously quite unhappy with the situation and beyond me looking like a fool for migrating from Windows Server to OS X, I now need to find a solution to the issues.
    I would like to know what is the official and Apple recommended way to solve this issue.
    Kind regards,
    Pejvan
    It seems like Apple is totally ignoring the issues, users are facing with SMB shares, while their emphasize as a selling point how OS X Server is a great "windows file" server.

    Hiya
    Thanks for the reply.
    >Is there a UPS involved?
    I wish there had been. I might not be having to deal with it now! :-)
    >If you boot from the Install Disc & use System Profiler there, does the Same RAM situation? Did you physically >check those slots? Thinking maybe the OS is kicking them out on bootup?
    I've had the following suggested to me on another forum - "My guess on the RAM error is this. You have a processor that wants the RAM to be dual channeled and since it reads both A slot are populated it wants both B slots to be populated. Remove A2 and put it in B1"
    But unless it is degrading performance I'll probably just leave it.
    > Still can't get it to boot from the Clone holding the Option/alt key at bootup?
    I can get it to boot from the Clone using the option key but it's a pretty random event. I can try for ages and then suddenly it'll work. Or it may work first time. It does seems to work more easily after a PRAM zap. The funny thing is that once it is booted up it will re-start in any way I want it to (the boot volume, the clone, a disk, single user mode etc). It is just hard to boot from a full shutdown.
    I'm thinking that if I ca get the start-up issue fixed then I can fix the RAID issue at my leisure and even add the hard-drive that the clone is currently on to the RAID array.
    Thanks again.

  • Trying to connect to Airport Extreme with Dell Wireless 1370 and Windows XP

    Home network using Airport Extreme Base Station with WPA-PSK (TKIP) Security. All works well with MACs in the house (G5, iMac, and Powerbook). Trying to connect a Dell Latitude D610 with built-in Dell Wireless 1370 WLAN mini-PCI Card to the home network.
    Initially home network is not seen on Dell Laptop in available networks (as expected as it has not been added to list of available networks and is a "closed" network)although I do see the neighbors network so card is working and sees "open" networks.
    Set-up options for the Dell 1370 card include:
    Network Name (SSID)
    Network Authentication (Includes "open", "shared", "802.1X", "WPA", "WPA-PSK", and "CCKM")
    Data Encryption (When WPA-PSK is selected it defaults to Auto)
    Network Key
    Confirm Key
    All other configuration items are greyed out.
    I enter my SSID, select WPA-PSK, Data Encryption defaults to auto, tried entering passwrod in Network Key and Confirm Key which does not seem to work. Adds to list of preferred networks but does not indicate availability.
    Question is I have a password that I use on MACs for access to WPA-PSK network. On the Dell there is no spot for a password and it does not seem to work in the Network Key or Confirm Key boxes.
    Any assistance would be appreciated.

  • Issues with using 6.0Gb/s drive with W520 and Windows 7

    I ordered 2 ThinkPad 500GB 7200RPM SATA 3.0GB/s 7mm 4K hard drives and was instead shipped 2 6.0GB/s drives. Even though the outside of the box has the correct configuration that I ordered. I installed the drive in the W520 and tried to run my company's OS installation script. This script encrypts the hard drive then does the installation of the OS, apps, Windows 7 drivers, updates SP1, etc. I got the BSOD several times during the installation, It took two times before I got the completed install. When I login I get BSOD plus many apati errors and the system hangs all kinds of ways. It's usually the display that goes back to an empty wallpaper but the mouse works and there are no icons on the desktop. I can startup and go into safe mode with networking and never have a problem. I called Lenovo Tech support and they say there are no special drivers needed for the 6.0GB/s type of drive and encryption does not matter. I have gone through Device Manager and ran the update driver option on all ATAPI controllers, disk drivers, Bus Host Controllers, chipset, etc. There are no errors in Device Manager. My thought is the 6.0GB/s is causing some conflict with something, perhaps refresh rate, disk read/writes, page file, I/O, memory, etc. Just don't know. Have searched the web and do not get much help. There is some talk about cables for 6.0GB/s but not much info.
    Any ideas? Thank you all.

    I too have a W520. I have a SATA III hard drive in my primary bay - no problems. I have booted off a SATA III SSD in the Ultrabay, also no problem. I don't believe your troubles are SATA III related.

  • Airport Extreme Disk works great on OSX and Windows XP but no go on Vista

    Just bought the Airport Extreme and attached a Seagate 320GB HDD to the USB port (formatted MAC journaled).
    Using the Airport Disk Ultility, I can access the NAS drive and read/write files from a 24" iMac and Windows XP PC.
    But on the Vista PC, Airport Disk Ultility recognise there is a drive, but when I try to connect to it and enter the password, I get this error;
    AirPort Disk Agent
    Unknown user, incorrect password, or login is disabled. Please retype the login information or contact the disk's administrator.
    I have tried setting the share to disk password, base station password and user accounts. All with the same error and only in Vista.
    Has anyone managed to get the Airport Disk working in Vista?

  • Migration from powerbook causing freezing and spotted display

    Hi everyone,
    I bought a used 24" Imac recently. I have been trying to migrate stuff from my 17" Powerbook G4. They are both running Leopard.
    I originally tried the assistant but would up having issues with the computer freezing from time to time and leaving short pixel lines from time to time.
    Started over from scratch. Tried moving over music and photos. Same problem.
    Removed the photo library and everything ran fine.
    Moved over my mail folder from library and the com.apple.mail.plist from the preferences folder.
    Opened mail and the screen turned fuzzy/pixelated on me. Computer crawled. Forced quit mail (process took 30 minutes...)
    What is going on? Will I ever be able to migrate to my new computer? I love my old powerbook and all, but...

    You know it does seem to be the memory. Once I replaced the memory with different chips all kernel panics have stopped, same with freezes. Funny how this passed all the memory tests.
    All seems to be better now anyway....thanks.

  • Still ! having issues connecting Vista or XP PCs to Time Capsule disk

    I know there are several posts on this subject, but I've followed most/all of them (as well as posts on other forums) and I still have not had any luck.
    If anyone with experience in this can help me through it, I'd greatly appreciate it!
    My setup is as follows:
    * new 1TB Time Capsule
    * macbook running 10.5.7
    * Sony VAIO on XP Home w/SP3
    * brand new Dell Vista Home Premium
    * misc other equipment running on network w/o issue
    All computers can access the TC network without issue.
    I've tried to connect to the TC disk by both mapping the drive (using the TC IP or TC name) and using the AirPort Disk utility. While I've gotten various errors (do not have permission, cannot recognize name, etc), the most common error on both machines is "Could not connect. Enable NetBIOS and try again(53)". On both the XP and Vista, I've gone into the network properies>TCP/IP>advanced>WINS tab and clicked "Enable NetBIOS", but this has no effect.
    While I've tried all settings with the same luck, my TC disk sharing is currently set to use accounts. I have unique accounts for the mac, XP, and vista. The mac can connect in every scenario I setup, of course.
    I can get both the Vista and the XP to connect to a shared folder I've setup on the macbook hdd, but again, I cannot get the PCs to connect to the TC disk.
    On occasion, I will see the TC name in the Vista's Network view. I have never seen in in the XP's network view. The strangest part to me is that on about 5 or so occasions, I have been able to go from not being able to connect to the TC disk to connecting by unplugging/replugging the TC's power cord. However, the connection between the Vista and the TC is usually lost within minutes and I'm back to square one (I've never been able to connect to the XP).
    On the Vista, I have already tried the registry edit: HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\ and changing lmcompatibilitylevel to 1.
    Is there a definitive solution known for this? My priority is to connect the Vista as the XP machine is dying. However, I added info about the XP in case it would help troubleshoot my issue.
    If anyone has the expertise and patience to walk me through this, I'd be forever thankful. I have wasted WAAAAY too much time already, and I'm about to throw in the towel. I need a miracle!!
    Message was edited by: todd needs help

    The workgroup is the same on the TC disk setting, the XP, and the Vista. At least for me, the problem is caused by something else. The strangest thing I am seeing is that sometimes I can get the XP and/or Vista machine to connect by simply unplugging/replugging the power supply to the TC - this is only by cycling the TC and making no other changes. However, usually within 5-10 mins after connecting, the Explorer will stop responding and I'll be back to the same problem and getting errors like: network path does not exists; windows can see 10.0.1.1 but cannot connect; cannot connect, must enable NetBIOS and try again; etc
    I am always able to ping the IP successfully, but connecting to the disk and STAYING connected has been a lost cause for me so far.
    If I can't figure this out, I'll be forced to send files from the XP and Vista to the macbook hdd, and then put the files on the TC disk. That's a solution that I'd be disappointed in, seeing as the the Apple store was very convinced that there would be no issue using the TC disk in my proposed network.
