Issue w/ shared printers and multiple copies

I just bought a Samsung ML-2010 today to replace my aging HP LaserJet 5L. The printer works fine (albeit rather noisily) except for one issue: I can't get it to print multiple copies of a document; if I specify multiple copies, I always get a single copy. I have downloaded the latest driver from Samsung's web site.
Has anyone experienced this? If so, have you found a solution?
Update: It appears to be a problem with shared printers. I have the printer connected to a wireless print server. When I share the printer through my desktop machine (so that I can queue long jobs on the desktop and put my PowerBook to sleep) , I have the issue. When I print directly to the print server from my PowerBook, multiple copies work just fine.

Never mind. I have no idea how I fixed it, but multiple copies are now working when the printer is shared by my desktop machine.

I have two shared printers and I want to be able to select one printer when it is time to print without having to set a default EACH time.  Can I just have a prompt or dialog box that will ask me which printer would you like to use???  The only options I can find are "default" and "Last printer used" which means I must go into the Print & Fax area and change the default EACH time I want to print???  Seems very low tech.....

In most cases you get this dialog box every time you print. It is called the print dialog and normally when you print, a print dialog appear showing the printer that is to be used. Which printer you see will be based on what you have set in Print & Fax as you mention. But regardless of what you have set there, you still have the option to change the printer via the print dialog.
If you are using an application that does not show the print dialog, like MS Word and that stupid "print one copy" print icon in the toolbar, then you can often change the action the print icon uses so that the print dialog appears.

  • ITunes Match and multiple copies of the same song

I have multiple copies of the same song in my iTunes collection.  For example, the song is on the original album, the "Best Of" album and on the "25th Anniversary" album.
Do we know how iTunes Match handle such situations?

  • Printing Issues with HP D145 and multiple users from G5

Hi - I've a HP D145 All-In-One connected via USB to a G5 (as described below). The machine has multiple accounts on for different members of my family. The printer is directly connected to the G5 via USB connection but is shared with other Macs. Printing has become increasingly difficult, and we now have the following problems:
    1. Printing will only work from the administrators account.
    2. Printing periodically (daily, generally after a few hours of use) stops from the administrators account
    Solutions tried:
    a. Check set up for the non-administrators accounts....Looks OK for printing
    b. When printing stops - I've tried repairing the permissions with the Disk Utility. This no longer works.
    c. Run Printer Setup Repair (with option to repair all user accounts) - Works for the administrators account providing the computer and printer are restarted, otherwise no effect.
    d. Reinstalling the software - No effect
It’s beginning to look like I need to replace this printer with one that works.
You can help me in two ways - how to solve the printer problems, or alternatively suggest a colour All-in-One printer that can work with multiple accounts and does not have the problems mentioned above.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Regards,
    Melvyn

Below I've copied the fix HP proposed and some additional information that they have sent me.

    Sincerely,
    2. The reasons why it may not have worked:
We need to be sure that you are fully logging out of one account and
then back into the next. The fast user switching feature of the Mac OS
can create problems with our printer drivers. For this reason, fast user
switching is not supported by HP.
The other issue we may be running into would be the Mac OS itself. Over
the past few months the Mac OS has gone through several updates. When
the 10.4.4 version was released it created some issues with our existing
software. An updated version of our software has been developed which
works well with 10.4.4 and higher, but it is not available for this
    printer.
It may be that as each new OS update is installed on your computers that
the issue becomes worse. If you are running the Mac OS 10.4.3 or lower
then the version 7.3.1 of our software should work fine. If it is 10.4.4
or higher there will be some issues as the new OS versions do not seem
    to like the older drivers.
I would have to recommend retrying the full uninstall the Derek had
outlined. This time however, just install the downloaded 7.3.1 software
from our web site for the D145. Once it has been installed we need to
test it fully without adding the scanjet software. I am hoping that
without both version of our software installed it may work better.
This should resolve the issue. If you need further assistance, please
reply to this message and we will be happy to assist you further.
    3. The repsonse to questions on switching and OS X 10.4.4
You are correct, since you are running the 10.4.4 I cannot guarantee
that the older software version will allow full functionality. It should
allow for printing and as long as you avoid the fast user switching,
when trying to print, it should keep working well.
I understand the convenience of fast user switching but you will have to
log completely out of one user, and then log properly into the next
before you can expect the printer to function.
I would still recommend trying the steps I had outlined as it really is
the only thing you can do that may work.

  • Iphoto directory structure and multiple copies

I want to manage the directory structure of my photos because I use them with applications and want to put them where I want to. Thus, I never cared for iPhoto 08 and how it organized the directory structure how it wanted to.
Additionally, it seems iPhoto 08 kept at least 1, sometimes 2 copies of the files. I'd rather have it make a backup only when the original got modified so it doesn't chew up twice as much disk space as needed.
Is there any change in iPhoto 09 for these issues?
I'm currently using Picasa, which I was thrilled when they released the mac version, and it pretty much works the way I want to work. But I'd love to try iPhoto again if its changed.

I want to manage the directory structure of my photos because I use them with applications and want to put them where I want to. Thus, I never cared for iPhoto 08 and how it organized the directory structure how it wanted to.
Then iPhoto is not for you - it is a photo manager and you want a file manager - iPhoto's speed and power comes from being an SQL database and as such there are no user serviceable parts in its library - it depends on the content and structure of the library and if you modify it then it is lost and can no longer operate
Additionally, it seems iPhoto 08 kept at least 1, sometimes 2 copies of the files. I'd rather have it make a backup only when the original got modified so it doesn't chew up twice as much disk space as needed.
iPhoto always keeps the original photo as imported unchanged and make a very small display thumbnail of each photo - if you make any modifications of any sort to a photo then it creates a modified version - each of these is different and there are no backups of photos created by iPhoto - you must do that yourself
Is there any change in iPhoto 09 for these issues?
Issues? There is no change in the way iPhoto works - they are not issues but intentional design that work well and provide great poser to the user for managing and finding photos
I'm currently using Picasa, which I was thrilled when they released the mac version, and it pretty much works the way I want to work.
Glad you found a program that meets your needs - iPhoto does not

  • Severe Security Issue with Sharing Permissions and Windows

I recently discovered a severe Security issue with the windows sharing an permission settings:
I have two users, an admin user and a parental controlled user. On my mac mini, i have a external harddrive connected. On the harddrive, i have three folders, Itunes, Iphoto (Package) and a Temp Folder. I want to share the Harddrive RW for the admin, but only R for the parental user. But the Temp folder should be accessible for RW for the parental as well.
    1. I set the Drive checkbox "ignore ownership" off.
    2. I set the permissions of the drive to admin RW, parental R and Everyone to "no access"
    3. I apply to enclosed Items
    4. I set the permission of the Temp folder to admin RW, parental RW and Everyone to "no access"
    5. I apply to enclosed Items
    6. I go to "File Sharing" in the Preferences and activate SMB sharing for both users
    7. I delete all previous shares
    8. I add the Disk and use the proposed permissions which are admin RW, parental R, Everyone "no access"
    9. I add the Temp folder and use the proposed permissions which are admin RW, parental RW, Everyone "no access" - Funny, there is a new Group called "Temp" created which has custom access on both sharepoints
    10. I connect to the mac over a Windows machine (NTLM auth set appropriatly). Now I try to create a folder on the root of the Disk share, I get a denied message.
BUT WHEN I GO INTO A SUBFOLDER (eg. ITUNES or IPHOTO), WHICH HAS ALSO JUST "R" PERMISSION FOR THE PARENTAL USER, I AM ABLE TO RW, DELETE AND DO EVERYTHING!!!
TO RECAPITULATE: THE SHARING PERMISSIONS ARE "R", AND THE FILE PERMISSIONS IN THE RESPECTIVE FOLDERS FOR THE RESPECTIVE USER ARE ALSO JUST "R". BUT THE USER CAN DO EVERYTHING IN THE SUBFOLDERS!!!

  • One Projector with shared casts and Multiple Users

I created a training program that was originally meant for
one user at a time. Now the client wants to
install the app on a network and have multiple users run the
same projector. When this is tested, an error comes up saying
    that
a shared cast is already open by another user and will not allow
anyone else to run the app at the same time.
I was told there was a work around for this but have not been
able to track it down in the forums yet. If you know the solution,
please hit me back as soon as possible as you can imagine I am in
    the hot seat. ;)
either hit me back here, OR directly at my email address:
    [email protected]
    Thanks!

Make sure that the projector file and all the external casts
    are set to
read-only. Then multiple users should be able to share them
    all.

  • Local Shared Objects and multiple SWFs: mutexes necessary?

I will have multiple SWFs on a single web page, each reading
and writing the same SharedObject, which may be up to 100K in size.
Will I need to create some sort of mutex scheme to ensure that one
SWF isn't writing while another is reading, or do all SWFs on a
page essentially run as a single-threaded application?

    >1) I don't think a SharedObject.flush is synchronous.
I believe it is, as long as you're not attempting to write
more data than the user has set for the Local Storage limit.
    http://livedocs.adobe.com/flex/3/langref/flash/net/SharedObject.html#flush()
You'll note that flush is described this way: "Immediately
writes a locally persistent shared object to a local file", and if
it returns "SharedObjectFlushStatus.FLUSHED" that means that "The
shared object has been successfully written to a file on the local
disk". So I'd say that the normal operation of flush() is
    synchronous. However, the SharedObjectFlushStatus.PENDING state
means that we've exceeded the limit set by the user, and are
waiting for them to allow or disallow it. I believe (strongly) that
that's the only case in which a netStatus event is sent.
    Do you read this differently?
As far as multiple SWFs running as cooperative or preemptive
multitasking processes, I'd really like to know the answer, but it
probably doesn't matter. The more I read and think about this, the
more it seems to me that Adobe has to prevent simultaneous reads
and writes to a single Shared Object from taking place, as one use
of it that I've read about is to share data between SWFs. For
    example:

We've just installed an old iMac with Mac OS 9.1 in the office. The network is made up of 2 windows PCs and this new iMac, connected through a D-link wireless router. We have a USB printer connected to one of the PC's and it's shared by the rest.
Anyway, I have very little experience with Mac OS and I want the iMac to use the printer as well as share files with the other PCs. Could anyone help me with a "foolproof" guide on how to do this? Thanks

    Followup:
indeed, 10.6 uses ntfs streams when availible to store metadata.
    for a workaround:
    http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/m an5/nsmb.conf.5.html
    create
    /etc/nsmb.conf

  • Shared Printers and Guest Networks

I have an Airport Extreme with an HP 990cxi printer connected to the USB port. I have the printer shared. My AE is configured to Create a Wireless Network". It is also configured to create a Guest Network.
As it stands, someone connected to the Guest Network cannot print. Is it possible to give someone access to the printer w/o giving them access to the private network? If not, what would I have to do to limit their access to my private network and what would they have access to?

I would delete and re-add the printer.
If that doesn't work, try resetting the printing system and re-add the printer. In the Print & Fax system prefs, ctrl-click on the printer list and select Reset Printing System.

I configured sharing group for 4 applications whitch use the same credential. I have some people witch have multiple credential for this group of application.
My problem is that the ESSO-LM not permit to log with 2 different set of cedential when i use the sharing group for this application.
Have you an idea to correct this?

    two options...
    1 - go to global agent settings ->live->enduser exeperience->response
Select Display "Add another logon" checkbox
This will enable a checkbox for when the user 1st enrolls the u/p to fill in a 2nd or 3rd credential
    OR
2 go to logon manager (the wallet or whatever you call it ) copy the existing credential then change the 2nd credential to what you want.
when you go to that site you will get a chooser on which one to use

  • SpamAssassin upgrades and multiple copies

Somewhere along the way I've performed the SA update to 3.3 using pterobyte's instructions and I find myself with 2 copies of SA. The older version 3.2.5 in /usr/bin and the newer version at /usr/local/bin. Unless if I run `which spamassassin` I get /usr/bin/spamassassin as a response.
Do I need to remove all the SA related binaries from /usr/bin so the more current ones in /usr/local/bin are utilized?

I haven't changed the path variable. But should I have 2 copies of SA? My $PATH order puts the older version ahead so the new version of all the file don't get called. I think this was a problem recently when I ran spamtrainer. I have since pointed to the newer /usr/local/bin/sa-learn in the spamtrainer cron job. Previously I hadn't indicated the path.

  • Shared printers and authentication

    Hey!
Canon printer attached to iMac A. When printing from iMac B, the queue says "On Hold (Authentication Required)"
    Both running Snow Leopard.

I would delete and re-add the printer.
If that doesn't work, try resetting the printing system and re-add the printer. In the Print & Fax system prefs, ctrl-click on the printer list and select Reset Printing System.
