Issue with JTextField Locking

Hey All!
I'm working on a database access project and have most things working pretty well, with one glaring exception.
I've got a JInternalFrame form with 13 data fields to act as a front-end for a table in my database. Most of these data fields are JTextFields, some two are JRadioButtons, one is a JCheckbox and the last one is a JCombobox.
To prevent accidental data editing, I lock the text fields down by setting JTextField.setEditable(false) and disable the other controls. I have the following method in my form:
// Locks the form from allowing accidental edits.
    private void unlockForm( boolean unlock ) {
        this.isModifying = unlock;
        this.txtAniv.setEditable(unlock);
        this.txtApt.setEditable(unlock);
        this.txtBDate.setEditable(unlock);
        this.txtCity.setEditable(unlock);
        this.txtFName.setEditable(unlock);
        this.txtLName.setEditable(unlock);
        this.txtPhone.setEditable(unlock);
        this.txtStreet.setEditable(unlock);
        this.txtZip.setEditable(unlock);
        this.chkSearchable.setEnabled(unlock);
        this.optAM.setEnabled(unlock);
        this.optRA.setEnabled(unlock);
        // Set up the toolbar.
        this.setupToolbar();
    } // End of unlockForm() function.If I call this method from a toolbar button ActionPerformed() event and supply `true' as the parameter, it should set the editability of the text fields to true and also enable the other widgets. This seems to work pretty much as expected, except with my txtCity field, for some reason.
When I click on my edit or add toolbar buttons, they call the unlockForm() method with the parameter set to `true'. However, when I attempt to change the data in the txtCity field, it acts as though it is still not editable. So, in an attempt to figure out what is going on here, I placed the following code in the FocusGained() event for the txtCity textbox:
        // DEBUGGING CODE:  Remove before release build!                      //
        // The following MessageBox is being displayed because I can not find //
        // the reason for the city field to not unlock and, yet, it will not  //
        // unlock for editing.  I need to figure this out!                    //
        MessageBox mb = new MessageBox();                                     //
        String msg = "The following are the settings of the city text field:";//
        msg += "\n-----------------------------------------------------\n";   //
        msg+ = "txtCity.getName() = "  +this.txtCity.getName();               //
        msg+ = "txtCity.getText() = "  +this.txtCity.getText();               //
        msg+ = "txtCity.isEditable() = "  +this.txtCity.isEditable();         //
        msg+ = "txtCity.isEnabled() = " + this.txtCity.isEnabled();           //
        mb.codeRequired(msg, this);                                           //
        ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////Now, when I click on the txtCity text field, I get this message box as expected, with one glaring problem. I get it more than once. Then, when I click on another control, I somehow go into an infinite loop of this message box being displayed and cannot get out of it. Here is my code for the FocusLost() event:
    private void txtCityFocusLost(java.awt.event.FocusEvent evt) {
        // Deselect the text.
        this.txtCity.select(0, 0);
        // Make sure that data was entered.
        if ( this.txtCity.getText() == null ||
                this.txtCity.getText().length() == 0 ||
                this.txtCity.getText().equals("") ) {
            this.txtCity.setBackground(errBG);
            this.txtCity.setForeground(errFG);
            this.txtCity.setFont(errFont);
            this.getToolkit().beep();
        } else {
            this.txtCity.setBackground(stdBG);
            this.txtCity.setFont(stdFont);
            this.txtCity.setForeground(stdFG);
            // Make sure the data was stored.
            this.entry.setCity(this.txtCity.getText());
    }Does anyone have any ideas as to what is going on? Maybe you could point me to a web site or book that actually has this problem and shows how to resolve it. I am at a complete loss as to what's happening, especially since I don't have any code in my FocusLost() event that points to my FocusGained() event. Any help that you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
If it would help to see what the form looks like, you can view it here:

Thank you for any and all help you may provide.

warnerja and camickr:
I think you all hit it on the nose. My problem was that NetBeans would not go into debug mode due to some vague NullPointerException. However, I deleted my NetBeans user directory and, voila, I can debug again.
So, when I debugged the code (without my crappy work-around attempt), I found that for some reason, when I click on or tab into the JTextField in question, it actually does go through the FocusGained event more than once, which I still cannot figure out, even going into the source for the Java APIs that get called. It's really weird and the strangest thing of all is that it is now, all of a sudden, working as expected. So, even though I have no clue what caused the issue to begin with, it seems to have cleared up.
In reference to the post about the SSCCE, I tried to post one, but when I created it, it worked as expected and so was no help in showing my problem. However, when I created the SSCCE, I had already taken the action on my NetBeans user directory, so I'm thinking that something was broken there. Hazards of verifying plugins, I guess.
Anyway, thank you all very much for your (unneeded, as it turns out) help to my (not actually a) Java problem. Next time I get some strange behavior like this, I think that I'll check my IDE first. ;-)
Cheers,
Sean C.

  • I just had another issue with cs6 locking up.

    I just had another issue with cs6 locking up.  This time, I was in cs6 beta working on an image, I went to file/open to open another existing file in photoshop, and when the finder window popped up to select a .jpg to open up, the cursor wouldn't respond to the finder window that was opened up, and I couldn't close it out, and I had to force quite cs6.

    If I'm reading this correctly, your last kernel panic (that's what these are called) occured six months ago.  Is that correct?  It probably does not have anything to do with the number of windows you have open; I suspect it has to do with one of the third party kexts or non-apple hardware.  My guess would be something with parallels (is the software up to date?), but if you're only getting panics at 6 month intervals it's really hard to diagnose.
    Kernel panics aren't fun, but they aren't the end of the world.  make sure you keep regular backups, and if you can figure out how to replicate the panic at a more frequent interval we can figure it out.

    If you also backed up to your computer - you can restore from that backup - to retrieve the files. As far as I know- that should have no bearing on deleting them from iCloud - they should still be in that backup.
    If you used iOS file sharing with your computer - and saved the files to your computer - you can retrieve them from there.
    if the only place that the files were saved to was iCloud, I know of no way to get them back.

  • Is there a fix coming for the iPad Air's issues with rotation locking???

    The iPad Air has an annoying glitch in its occasional (frequent) shift to landscape mode, and locking in that position.  Is this a known/reported issue with a fix coming?
    This didn't occur with the older version of the iPad.

  • Solved issue with Bridge locking up

    If anyone is having a problem with Bridge locking up when clicking on Bridge Home, Adobe Photographers Directory, etc., and you have Opera 9.5 installed, the solution is to remove Opera 9.5.

    It seems to be the latest version (9.5). I used Time Machine to go back before I installed the update. For me, that was June 4. I used AppZapper to find everything that was involved and restored it with Time Machine's restore feature. I also found and zapped everything to do with the Opera beta.
    It's working now. Thanks for the heads up!

  • Issues with file locking when reading a file using RollingFile Appender

    Hi,
    I am facing a file Rotation Issue with log4j. I want a way to read one file from two diff apps.
    Intro: App A is writing a file F using log4j rolling file appender and app B is reading the same file F using “new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(new FileInputStream(_file)))”.
    Issue: App A is not able to roll the file. Because it is having a handle on the same file F.
    Please let me know how can I handle this issue.

    If you have the file open for reading when log4j tries to rename it, the rename will fail. Solution: don't have the file open for reading.
    I want to read the feed of such rolling logs without closing any handle.I gave you a solution to that too.
    If I am closing the handle after every read then there will be no way to determine where I left.Nobody suggested that.
    Is there any possible solution for this?What part of the solution I have already posted didn't you understand?

  • I have heard that the iphone 5 has hardware issues with the lock button and sometimes the power button...is this a recurring problem or is it easily fixable?

    Is this problem affecting most users? I heard that it usually takes abotu 2-3 weeks after getting a replacement that these problems might occur and I don't wanna shell out a lot of money only to have to constantly go to the apple store and get a new replacement regardless if it is free.

    I currently have a defective lock/sleep button on my iPhone 5. After putting up with it for 3 weeks, I took it to an apple store. The "genius" told me that because I'm 50 days over my year warranty, I would have to pay $280 to get a replacement. They will not fix the problem. They can only give you a refurbished phone. BEWARE: the replacement is only free if the phone is still within the one year warranty or if you have an extended apple care. I'm still blown away on the fact that I payed $500 for a product that defected in a little over a year and be told by a condescending apple genius that I have to pay $280 to resolve the problem. My friends who have Samsungs and HTCs have 2 year old phones that work as well as the day they bought them. I had a blackberry for almost 3 years and had no issues at all, but a highly advanced, "well made" apple product barely lasted a year. My wife's iPhone 4S shuts off when the battery drops to 30%. And of course the guys at the Genius Bar say they can't help. I shouldn't have to pay for a replacement unless I did the damage myself. I've been an iPhone user since the first iPhone. And every year, I've had something break right after the warranty expires (failed audio jack on iPhone 1, failed earphone on iPhone 3G, failed home button on iPhone 4). It's getting really old spending a lot of money on cheap products and having to deal with the "better-than-you" swagger from the Genius Bar.

  • E71 300.21.012 upgrade issue with keypad Locking

    Hi all...
    I applied this upgrade (the *#0000# commnand confirmed it). After that I noticed a most annoying change - the phone either doesn't lock itself at all (when I set both keypad and phone autolock to none), or applies both the keypad lock and the phone autolock, even if I set the keypad lock to None and only the phone autolock to some period. Its cumbersome because one has to go through two unlocking procedures to unlock the phone...!  first the "Now press function key" and then the secret lock code...
    the bug is that the E71 ignores the "none" option in the "keypad lock" option whenever the phone autolock option is set too. Before the upgrade, it didn't.
    Many thanks

    i don't use the phone lock feature at all so i don't know if this behaviour was the same with the previous firmware version. i have tried it just now and yes you have to press the function key before entering the phone lock code. that is not the key lock function. i have set the key lock function to off. so it seems that pressing the function key before entering the phone lock code is the normal behaviour of the phone lock function. or at least it does it on my phone.
    try and have both key lock and phone lock functions on and you will see the difference.
    cheers

  • Have issues with Contact locking up while dragging contact into Group

    After creating a new Group in iCloud-Contacts, while dragging and dropping new contacts into the group, the browser locks up each time I try to drag a new contact into the group.
    Browser:  Firefox 10.0.1

    I am also having a similar problem with my 13 " macbook pro purchased in Aug 2011. I took the same to
    m/s Unicorn Infosolutions Pvt Ltd , Mumbai ( authorised service centre for apple). They first checked it and said that it was a hardware problem and I will have to keep the MBP with them till they get the replacement part from Bangalore and the repair would be free of cost since it was under warranty. So far so good. Then late in the evening , they called me up to inform that there was liquid found inside and the mother board would have to be repaced and the same would cost Rs 64,000/- which is slightly less than the cost of a new mbp.
    Unable to understand the formation of liquid since the time they checked up in the morning and their discovery in the late evening.
    They probably had a change of heart regarding replacement of the part under warranty.
    Apple should take serious action against such firms which indulge in such unscrupulous activities.
    Now I am left high and dry since apart from scrapping my new MBP, my data is also lost.
    Hope Apple can come out with a solution for this problem and replace/rectify the machine.

  • File Locking Issue with Concurrent Locks

    Hi. I'm trying to implement a procedure using the File Lock class for two instances of the same program (running on different servers) accessing files shared over an NFS mount in Unix (this is using Java 1.5). 99% of the time, this works great. One box will get the lock, and the other will respect that lock and not touch the file. However, the other 1% of the time, both boxes seem to access the same file simultaniously, allowing BOTH to acquire locks on the same file.
    I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on how to solve this problem. I've been searching all over but haven't found a solution. Like I said, the locking works most of the time - I've even independantly verified that it does (and that it's not just timing) with a test program. It's only when both programs access the file at the exact same does that there seems to be a problem.
    If it helps, here is the gist of my code:
          FileLock javaLock = null;
          FileChannel fileChannel = null;
          for(int i = 0; i < fileArray.length; i++)
             javaLock = null;
             fileChannel = null;
             if(!fileArray.exists())
    continue;
    try
    RandomAccessFile raLockFile = new RandomAccessFile(fileArray[i], "rw");
    try
    fileChannel = raLockFile.getChannel();
    if(fileArray[i].exists())
    javaLock = fileChannel.tryLock();
    catch(OverlappingFileLockException ofle)
    // Error printed here
    continue;
    catch(Exception e)
    // Error
    javaLock = null;
    if(javaLock == null)
    continue; // File is already locked, move to next one
    // Processing is done on the file here
    catch(Exception e)
    // Error
    finally
    try
    if(javaLock != null)
    javaLock.release();
    if(fileChannel != null)
    fileChannel.close();
    catch(Exception e)
    // Error

    I don't have the errors on hand at the moment, but most were File Not Found IOExceptions (because one box would finish processing the file and rename it out from under the other box). Using a bunch of System.out.println()s I was able to determine that both boxes were locking the same specific files producing those errors.
    The other weird thing that would happen is that the file would be processed correctly on one box, but somehow leave behind a zero length version of itself, which the other box would finish processing normally as if we had received a zero length file (as we have special code in place for that condition). This is probably the biggest problem, since I can trap File Not Founds (though it's messy and kind of defeats the purpose of using locks to begin with), but I don't have a real easy way to catch this (and I can't just toss out all zero lengths because we want to know if we legitamently got a zero length file in).
    As far as I can tell though, this problem doesn't occur outside of an NFS mount, but I haven't tested it extensively enough to be sure (since it's a random timing thing, it's difficult to reproduce outside of just dumping a ton of files on it). I'm not entirely sure how our NFS system in configured, since that is completely out of my hands (System Admins have contol over all of that). But I believe it has most of the latest patches.

    It seems to me that your real problem must be an NPE using 'chatInput'.

  • Ongoing issue with my iPhone.

    So here's the story from the beginning.
    Just before Christmas 2008, my phone completely locked up while I was away from home. Couldn't turn it off, couldn't do anything. I didn't freak out too much because I've had multiple issues with it locking up. When I got home that night, I plugged my phone into the computer to try doing a restore on it, hoping that would fix it. Well, joyous occasion, it did. However, just before unplugging it after it telling me it was okay to disconnect, my computer crashed. Black screen. Almost like the computer went into permanent hibernation. The only way to get it to restart was to unplug it for a few seconds, then plug it back in and start it back up. That has to be good for the computer, right?
    My computer never has issues unless there's just been a big World of Warcraft patch and the servers are having issues. But then that's not necessarily my computer.
    A monthish passed, and I decided that I needed new music on my phone. I was getting rather tired of the same ole. I plug my phone in, and YES! My computer crashes immediately. I spent about two hours on the phone with tech support after that, my computer crashing numerous times during the phone call.
    If my computer doesn't crash right away, it will back up my phone, then sync all of my apps (every single time I plug in), then nothing. I've done the while uninstall then reinstall of iTunes, I then checked all of my system stuffs and all that was good. I decided maybe it would be a fabulous idea to do another restore on my phone. So I do this, and not only does it still not sync my music, but it deletes all the music I had on there already. I even went as far as doing a complete system restore on my computer. STILL nothing. I've gotten all kinds of virus protection, scans, updates, everything that I can think of.
    At one point, I had my phone just sitting on my desk, not plugged in, accidentally bumped it with my elbow and it fell and bumped the side of my computer case and it crashed. After that I gave up.
    Well today I thought I'd give it one more try, so I plugged in after doing some windows updates. AH! A glimmer of hope! My computer doesn't crash! Phone backs up, apps sync, then nothing.
    HOW IS MY MUSIC STILL NOT SYNCING?!

    BSoD's (blue screens of death) are not necesarily a bad driver issue. you could have a dying hard drive, dying processor, dying motherboard, dying ram, or anything else in your computer might be going wrong. there are a TON of free hardware test programs out there, and i would suggest testing out your computer to see what it might be.
    i've never had a firewall issue while syncing my phone.
    however (and this is the most important) - if you have not backed up your computer, DO IT NOW! do not turn it on unless you are ready to back it up. if something in your computer is going bad, every time you turn it on and every minute it is already on is leading your computer into the hole of death, and you might lost all of your data.
    there are 2 main ways of backing up your computer, using dvds or an external hard drive. my preference is for the hard drive, however, like any other hard drive, these can go bad with little/no warning. however, they are a lot better then dvd's as you can only burn 4.7gb to a dvd, and using dvd's can split folders into multiple pieces and then you have a management nightmare, not to mention 100 dvds if you have a 500gb hard drive.

  • Pre-n enabler seems to cause issues with lock up/beach ball

    I just received my new C2D MBP yesterday with 3G of RAM and all was peachy. I decided to install the $1.99 Pre-N enabler patch from Apple and it appears that I'm not alone in having that cause system lock ups and beach balls from ****.
    I unfortunately seem to be in the same boat. It runs for awhile and then all of a sudden it will just lock up and I'll get the spinning beach ball from **** forever, until I reboot.
    I'm using mine with a NetGear Pre-N wireless router and while I'm getting 140kpbs connections I am getting a lot of receive errors and the machine just goes off to la-la land.
    I was worried about something else until I read these posts over in Internet & Networking and now I'm wondering if there really is an issue with whatever the "enabler" did. It ceratinly appears to be this. Nothing else seems to cause it this kind of beach ball death.
    So now I guess we need to look for an "un-enabler" patch. Just out of curiosity where do we email problems like this to get resolved?
    UGGHHHHHHH!!!

    I have this same problem. I reported a bug to apple bug id#4990056
    Here is what i wrote:
    10-Feb-2007 10:36 PM Brooks Roy:
    Summary:
    I recently got a Linksys WRT350N 802.11n router and using it with my macbook pro core 2 duo. The router is firmware version 1.03.2.
    After installing the enabler from the apple site i verified it upgraded properly and it shows a/b/g/n for my airport card. However the computer has been locking up more and more. I finally narrowed it down to the airport card. Here is what happens:
    Steps to Reproduce:
    With regular airport usage, the mac will all of the sudden give the spinning 'beach ball' and just sit there. A simple http download will stop and the mac will become unresponsive. I cannot launch new applications. The icons will bounce in the dock but never open. I cannot force-quit any applications. My only option is to hold down the power button for a hard shutdown.
    I can almost duplicate the issue 7 times out of 10. Sometimes it takes 15 minutes or so before it locks up, sometimes its almost immediately.
    I have done a full fsck and permissions. I also downloaded tiger cache cleaner and cleaned all settings. I have also booted off the apple install cd and done a extended full RAM check on the 2Gb installed in my computer.
    I have restored my IO80211Family.kext from my other macbook pro (regular core duo) and my problems have gone away. I am 100% sure there is a bug with the 802.11n enabler and the Linksys WRT350N.
    I do not have any special configuration on my linksys, just MAC based wireless authentication.
    When using the MacBook pro on the WRT350N in 802.11g without the latest 802.11n enabler the mac performs fine and does not become unresponsive.
    Expected Results:
    I expect the mac to perform just as a 802.11g network will work with increased transfer speeds.
    Actual Results:
    See above.
    Regression:
    It only occurs when using network traffic (i.e Mail.app, Safari browsing sites, etc. Any application that requires Airport.
    Notes:
    I am using the original IO80211Family.kext driver that does not have 802.11n support and it works properly. Also using builtin ethernet with airport off and the 802.11n driver works (obviously).

  • Since I've installed Mountain Lion, I am having lock up issues with multiple programs. MS Outlook has crashed and I've lost all my folders. HELP?

    Since I've installed Mountain Lion, I am having lock up issues with multiple programs. MS Outlook has crashed and I've lost all my folders. HELP?

    okay I've finally been able to get tor and all the other programs to work according to my plan the only thing that's still making problems is that iptables doesn't work as I want it to, when I start chromium without proxy settings privoxy doesn't seem to forward the information to polipo.. do I need to add another rule to iptables.rules in order for the program to know it has to reroute the information again or how can I get this to work? and is there any way to run rtorrent with proxy support?
    anyway, problem 2 and 3 are still to be solved.
    and does anybody know where i can get a good dansguardian blacklist that was not designed for 6 year old children and for which I don't need to subscribe? I'm still getting these partypoker popups -.-
    //e: with iptables it's the same thing as described in the first post. https works, http doesnt. I get the output "Invalid header received from client." on http sites. still no idea why though.. (and the https-version of torcheck.xenubite says i'm tor unprotected while starting the browser with iptables)
