Issue with partitions

Hi all,
So I had Tiger and BootCamp installed on my MacBook. Then I installed BootCamp and Ubuntu Linux. I had 3 partitions, one for /, one for /home and one for the swap.
After successfully installing Leopard, I wanted to get rid of Ubuntu. So I tried to start BootCamp, but it told me that the startup disk is not supported.
So, afterwards, I have used the Disk Utility to delete the / and the /home Linux partitions and created 2 HFS+ partitions and afterwards I have made only one out of these 2. So now I have the Linux swap and another HFS+ volume (besides the main one where Leopard is installed).
Now the problem is with the Linux swap volume. I have tried to delete it using Disk Utility but it just doesn't work. When I try to erase it, nothing happens. So the first question is, how do I delete it? Is there any other disk utility software I can use under Leopard that can delete this volume?
Then assuming I manage to do this, is there then a way to just merge all the space that I will have back in the main Macintosh HD volume without destroying everything on it and having to re-install Leopard?
Many thanks and regards,
Stelian Iancu

ipartition might be able to do it for you:
http://www.coriolis-systems.com/iPartition.php
I own it. It Rocks!
You might first try to erase the volume using DU on the command line:
Macpro7:~ kjk$ diskutil eraseVolume
Disk Utility Tool
Usage: diskutil eraseVolume format name MountPoint|DiskIdentifier|DeviceNode
Completely erase an existing volume. Ownership of the affected disk is
required. Format is the specific filesystem name you want to erase it as
(HFS+, etc.). Name is the (new) volume name (subject to filesystem naming
restrictions), or can be specified as %noformat% to skip initialization
(newfs). You cannot erase the boot volume.
Example: diskutil eraseVolume UFS %noformat% /Volumes/SomeDisk
Valid filesystems: "Journaled HFS+" "HFS+" "Case-sensitive HFS+" "Case-sensitive Journaled HFS+" "HFS" "MS-DOS FAT16" "MS-DOS FAT32" "MS-DOS FAT12" "MS-DOS" "UDF" "UFS" "ZFS"

I'm concerned about the view in step 2 and the index join in step 3. A composite index with both columns might eliminate the index join and result in fewer read operations.
If you know which partition the data is going into beforehand you can save a little bit of processing by specifying the partition (which may not be a scalable long-term solution) in the insert - I'm not 100% sure you can do this on inserts but I know you can on selects.
The APPEND hint won't help the way you are using it - the VALUES clause in an insert makes it be ignored. Where it is effective and should help you is if you can do the insert in one query - insert into/select from. If you are using the loop to avoid filling up undo/rollback you can use a bulk collect to batch the selects and commit accordingly - but don't commit more often than you have to because more frequent commits slow transactions down.
    I don't think there is a nologging hint :)
    So, try something like
    insert /*+ hints */ into ...
    Select
         A.Ing_Acct_Nbr, currency_Symbol,
         Balance_Date,     Company_No,
         Substr(Account_No,1,8) Account_No,
         Substr(Account_No,9,1) Typ_Cd ,
         Substr(Account_No,10,1) Chk_Cd,
         Td_Balance,     Sd_Balance,
         Sysdate,     'Sisadmin'
    From Ideaal_Cons.Tb_Account_Master_Base A,
         Ideaal_Staging.Tb_Sisadmin_Balance B
    Where A.Vendor_Acct_Nbr = Substr(B.Account_No,1,8)
       And A.Vendor_Cd = b.company_no

  • [ Solved ] Issue with Partitioning (setting the boot flag)

I've tried to install Arch a few times. I always seem to run into this issue which affects me later on.
fdisk (fdisk /dev/sda) doesn't provide me with the ability to set the boot flag on any of the partitions. Therefore I have issues when I get to the bootloader bit. (intend to use grub)
When I use cfdisk (cfdisk /dev/sda), while its help does say pressing 'b' will toggle the flag, in all images I've seen of what cfdisk should look like there has been a column marked 'Flags'  - that isn't present for me. So, I have no way of knowing if it actually gets set, though I doubt it does.
    Partition Table is GPT.
    Though,
    fdisk -l gives
    Disk /dev/sda ~465.8 GiB
    Disk /dev/loop0 ~278.2 MiB //Not entirely sure what loop0 and loop1 are...
    Disk /dev/loop1 ~32 GiB
    Disk /dev/mapper... //the live image.
I'm probably just making a simple mistake - though I have no idea what. Help?
(Ruling out other errors, using latest dual architecture image, (using 86_64 UEFI) on this system; Asus X99 Pro, Core  i7 5820k, 16GB RAM, ~500GB SSD, generic video card).

It's okay - I just decided to follow the beginner's guide again. It recommend the use of parted for GPT  when using UEFI. So I just did that,  I also went for gummiboot as the bootloader. Never used it before, but it seems to do the job...
Did forget to create a user though, so I'll have to log in as root and do that.
Anyway, I'll mark this as solved.

  • Possible issue with partitions?

I clean installed 10.5 on a blank internal partition. I have installed nothing else on it. The other partition on the internal drive is my main bootable 10.4.10 with all the programmes I use.
Having successfully booted up on the 10.5 partition I was looking through the various menus and noticed that the services menu was reporting options related to programmes on the 10.4.10 partition.
    Is this normal??

I don't know, Sebastian. This is my first major OS upgrade on my 17" MBP, too.
I found a great tutorial on how to install Leopard onto an external Firewire drive, which I am doing right now. I just wanted to keep things "separate" until we see what glitches may arise.

  • Unmovable file issue with partitions in Windows 7

I am using Thinkpad SL510, and I am attempting to shrink the C drive to create a new partition.  My available space on C: is about 270 gigabytes, but the computer will only let me shrink this to about 160 gigabytes available, whether using Shrink Volume in Win7 or a special program.  I tried removing unmovable files (paging file and shadow copy storage area) as suggested by Win7 help, but this did not allow me to shrink the drive any further.  Is anyone aware of a Lenovo-specific unmovable file that might be found on the C drive?
    Thanks.
    Moderator note; subject edited

In addition to disabling system protection and choose "no paging file" did you also try to disable hibernation that will remove the hiberfil.sys? You can disable hibernation with the command "powercfg -h off" and then re-enable with "powercfg -h on" after the shrink.
If that doesn't help there are programs that can show you where the files are located on the hdd as well as show if they are unmovable or not. Then you might find out the reason why you are unable to make the current partition smaller than 160gb available.

  • Help Installing Leopard and issues with partition maps.

Hi, i've been trying to install leopard on my MacPro G5 to no avail, as my super-drive had failed, i've tried pulling out the HDD and mounting it via an external enclosure and connecting the mounted HDD to my Intel based mac and installing Leopard from a disc running from my Intel based mac to the mounted HDD from my MacPro.
The problem i've encountered is with the partition maps, OSX installer does not allow me to install Leopard onto the external HDD with Apple Partition Map and insists i re-partition it as GUID which i can't do so as it'll mean i wouldn't be able to boot it from my MacPro G5, thus i'm wondering if anyone have an idea on how to get Leopard installed in such circumstances.
    Thanks!

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
First, let's get the terms straight.
There is a Mac Pro, which is an Intel processor, using EFI and utilizing the GUID partition map.
There is a G5, which is a PPC processor, using Open Firmware and the APM scheme.
There is no Mac Pro G5
A Mac Pro can use an APM mapped drive to boot from, but cannot install an OS to it.
In order to install an OS to a drive while installed in or connected to a Mac Pro, the drive must be formatted using the GUID scheme.
A G5 must use an APM formatted drive to boot.
To install Leopard on a G5, one must use a retail version of Leopard (not a gray disc that shipped with an Intel Mac), boot to the install disc, format the drive and install.

    Hello Vitor,
There are currently no known issues with version enabled tables that are partitioned. The merge operation may need to access all of the partitions of a table depending on the data that needs to be moved/copied from the child to the parent. This is the reason for the 'Partition Range All' step in the plan that you provided. The majority of the remaining steps are due to the hints that have been added, since this plan has provided the best performance for us in the past for this particular statement. If this is not the case for you, and you feel that another plan would yield better performance, then please let me know and I will take a look at it.
One suggestion would be to make sure that the table was been recently analyzed so that the optimizer has the most current data about the table.
Performance issues are very hard to fix without a reproducible test case, so it may be advisable to file a TAR if you continue to have significant performance issues with the mergeWorkspace operation.
    Thank You,
    Ben

  • Issue with  OBIEE ROW_NUMBER() OVER (PARTITION BY)

    Hi All,
I am facing some issue with the ROW_NUMBER() OVER (PARTITION BY function in the query that is being generated. I am currently on version 11.1.1.6. I have 1 FACT and 1 Dimension table. Within the dimension I have create a level based hierarchy namely REGION -> GROUP - DIVISION etc. Now the problem is that the OBIEE automatically applies *"ROW_NUMBER() OVER (PARTITION BY T9.PRODUCT_TYPE_DESC, T130.DIVISION_DESC, T130.REGION_DESC ORDER BY T9.PRODUCT_TYPE_DESC ASC, T130.DIVISION_DESC ASC, T130.REGION_DESC ASC) "
to the query where in it is not required at it returns with 3 different row numbers. If i remove this line and the where clause I am able to get correct results however its not working whatever I do in the RPD. Please advise.

    Hi Dhar,
Thanks for replying back. But the ROW_NUMBER thing is inserted with the "WITH SUPPORTED" clause only but that is something which are the default settings. However, I notice that ROW_NUMBER() OVER (PARTITION BY) lines are erratic and are not consistent. So sometimes the drill works properly when no ROW_NUMBER() OVER (PARTITION BY) is generated but other times data is wrong. I am not sure why this behaviour is erratic even though I select the same values.
This is surely a product problem as the condition where c7 = 1 filters the result and does not take into account all values.
Even when I do not use WITH_SUPPORTED clause the stitch does not happen properly. Please advice if this is ever going to be by Oracle or any work around for this?
    Thanks

  • Export Issues with Compressed Partition Tables?

We recently partitioned and compressed some large tables. It appears, but I'm not sure yet, that this is causing the export to run extremely slow. The database is at 10.2.0.2 and we are using the exp utility, not datapump. Does anyone know of any known issues with using exp to export compressed, partitioned tables?

can you give more details of the table structure with dbms_metadata if possible, and how you are taking the export please?
    did you try to take an sql*trace of the export process to see what is going on behind, this is an introduction if you may need;

  • New to Mac - Issues with imported Excel Docs

Imported my Excel docs from my PC and they made the trip but when I open them, some don't work properly. I have some billing statements that I made with Excel templates. Whenever I open and try to save them, I get an error message:
    Users/JaneDoe/Documents/Private Practice/Billing Statements/Jones 2 16 05 MAC.numbers
I'm having some issues with Word documents that have tables in them also.
I love my new MAC but have many business forms that I need to use. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for your answer, I suspected as much. I've been thinking about this and have decided that since those are historical files and not working files, I'll just leave them alone and create new billing statements using Mac. It's certainly easy enough to do.
The Word documents, though, are a different story. I've scanned pages out of some manuals and many of the pages are questionnaires with tables to indicate answers. Some documents are multiple pages and every other page I view is blank. It's difficult and sometimes impossible to delete the blank page or move the table up. If I can't salvage these, I'll have to go back into the manuals and scan the pages all over again.
And I don't want to partition my hard drive, run Windows parallel or invest in Office for Mac because that all defeats the purpose of my transition to a Mac in the first place - ease of use.
    Thanks again.

I read that this line in my case
    [ 1.115441] ACPI Warning: SystemIO range 0x000000000000F000-0x000000000000F01F conflicts with OpRegion 0x000000000000F000-0x000000000000F00F (\_SB_.PCI0.SBUS.SMBI) (20150204/utaddress-254)
    is a bug and unfixable.
What does that mean and why is it "unfixable"? Is that some hardware that is not compatible with Arch at all?

  • Performance issues with pipelined table functions

I am testing pipelined table functions to be able to re-use the <font face="courier">base_query</font> function. Contrary to my understanding, the <font face="courier">with_pipeline</font> procedure runs 6 time slower than the legacy <font face="courier">no_pipeline</font> procedure. Am I missing something? The <font face="courier">processor</font> function is from [url http://www.oracle-developer.net/display.php?id=429]improving performance with pipelined table functions .
Edit: The underlying query returns 500,000 rows in about 3 minutes. So there are are no performance issues with the query itself.
    Many thanks in advance.

    Like:
    - a database version
    - how did you test
    - what data do you have, how is it distributed, indexed
    and so on.
If you want to find out what's going on then use a TRACE with wait events.
All nessecary steps are explained in these threads:

  • Problems with partitions after hard reset

Hi hope some can help here, I installed Maverick on my imac and everything seemed fine, I went to work and came home to find a black screen with nothing but the mouse cursor, however the computer wouldnt respond in any way so had to do a hard reset when the computer restarted I would get the Aplle logo and the spinning wheel then the computer would restart it kept doing this over and over.
I restared the computer went into DU tried to repair disk and kept getting errors, my drive is 3TB i have a 1TB primary Partition and a second of 2TB I tried to erase and reformat the primary partition but got an error half way through now both partitons are greyed out with no way or deleting or doing anything with them I have also noticed I no longer have the hard drive make and model in the list just Mackintoh HD and my second partition, to make matters worse my second partition is now unmounted and and when I try to mount it says it needs to be repaired but wont repair, I really need totry and get the data from the second partiton but im struggling, when I tried to reinstall os x it cant see a drive to install to nothing shows up, I even booted using diskwarrior and even it couldnt see the drive, I know this drive is ok this is a software issue the partition table seems to be corrupt or something help!!
Its worth mentioning I had Parallels and Windows 7 on the primary partiton could the windows partiton have caused an issue when I tried to erase and reformat the partition?
