Issue with Writeback in OBIEE 11g

Hello,
I have a created writeback report and it is working fine as of now .Now I changed the writeback template to use stored procedure to update the data.When I am trying to update integer columns it is working fine but when I try to update varchar columns it is giving the error instantly without generating the log.
"An error occurred while writing to the server. Please check to make sure you have entered appropriate values. If the problem persists, contact your system administrator."
When I try to update the procedure in DB ,it is working as expected. Can anyone tell me what is way I can troubleshoot the issue?

Drill through to another report with bins in OBIEE 11g

Hi Everyone,
We have a specific scenario that is as follows:
Bar chart with 3 bars: '0-30', '31-60' and 'other'
these bars repsent the number of people who are in that age bucket.
This was accomplished by taking the peron's Age (a dimension with an age column) and using the 'bin' option in obiee 11g answers.
When the user clicks on one of the bins in the bar chart (e.g. 0-30), it should navigate to another report which contains details (a table) of ONLY the people who are in that age bucket.
In order do this I created the same 'age bucket' in the drilll through report and set the field as prompted.
This works in OBIEE 10g but in OBIEE 11g when I click the 'bin' (e.g. 0-30) on the top report, it navigates to the other report via action link and displays ALL of the people, not just the people in the bucket 0-30.
Can anyone advise?
P.s. if I remove the bin for the age bucket, and display the actual age, the drill down works fine. I think the issue is specific to the bin feature. I am using OBIEE 11.1.1.6.4

Issue with Datasource in BPEL 11g

Hi,
I am getting the following error intermittently with the datasource when used in the BPEL process. I already had a look at the forum post A stale Connection Factory or Connection Handle may be used in SOA 11g
The particular settings suggested in the above forum post is already done and still the issue persists. Is there any possibility that database is not allowing these many connections from their end? We have set the maxConnection pool size to 1000 and also tried with modifying the size to 2000.
any pointers for debugging this issue would be appreciated.

Hi,
Do you see its an issue with availbility of connections in the connection pool? the connection pool maximum size is 2000 now and i think its very huge number.
In our BPEL component we have 8 to 9 db adapter calls and number of concurrent requests are very low. So i don't see a reason that bpel component will consumer all these available datasources.

I'm running into some more of Oracle's typical gibberish and poorly written documentation, and need some help patching OBIEE 11g.

So let's see, I've got two OPATCH.BAT files, one in c:\mw_home1\Oracle_BI1=OPatch\, and the other in c:\mw_home1\oracle_common\OPatch\.
I open a command window, CD to one of those paths, and run opatch lshomes. I get this error:
"The Oracle Home C:\mw_home1 is not OUI based home. Please give proper Oracle Home. OPatch returns with error code = 1. OPatch failed with error code = 1"
Same results for the other opatch.bat in the other directory.
Besides the atrocious grammar, this error message is not helpful in the least. I'm trying to patch OBIEE 11g, which is installed in c:\mw_home1. What else is opatch wanting?

Yes, the error message is misleading. It should say something like "Environment variable ORALCE_HOME has not been set or set incorrectly".
Here is how I solved the problem on a Windows Oracle Fusion Middleware SOA installation. The SOA installation already comes with OPatch installed. In my case it is located in D:\Oracle\Middleware\Oracle_SOA1\OPatch. On a command prompt, I set the environment variable ORACLE_HOME like this
set ORACLE_HOME=D:\Oracle\Middleware\Oracle_SOA1
and the CLASSPATH variable like this
set classpath=
The latter prevents opatch from loading classes it does not need and throwing java.lang.ClassNotFoundException. Also notice ORACLE_HOME does not point to D:\Oracle\Middleware but D:\Oracle\Middleware\Oracle_SOA1. I made a mistake by setting ORACLE_HOME to D:\Oracle\Middleware kept getting:
"Recommended actions: Please make sure no other OPatch or OUI processes is running. Try to run $ORACLE_HOME/oui/bin/runInstsaller.
OPatch failed with error code = 20"
I wasted a lot of time trying to figure out what went wrong.

Issues with procedures on ODI 11g

Hello Gurus,
We have an ODI environment, where we have migrated from ODI 10g to ODI 11g (11.1.1.6) using Upgrade Assistant.
Issue is that, the Procedures in our migrated packages show executed in Operator (by Green tickmark), but they are actually NOT executing the code. Means we are not able to see Code for the procedure steps, when that step is opened from operator. It does not even show Rows updated or other statistics. It shows 0 for all.
We do not see any error in ODI studio for those steps. Thats why unable to figure out whats happening.
Note: There is no issue with the SQL code. Its been tested on SQL Server.
What could be cause behind this ?

The issue here is that there is Always Execute option which belongs to each procedure. It must be enabled/checked(need to check manually going through each procedure) in order to have the procedure run after migration to 11g. This was not mandatory in 10g & unfortunately, Upgrade Assistant does not take care on this.

Column Formula with Error in OBIEE 11g

On Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition 11g, I am trying to create an analysis. The database is MySQL. In the database, there is a field of type varchar(10). This
field shows a date. In OBIEE 11g, when creating the analysis, in the Criteria tab, I choose this column (varchar) and edit the formula of it. The operation that I want to do is:
YEAR(CURRENT_DATE) - SUBSTRING("TableName"."ColumnName" FROM 1 FOR 4) where the ColumnName is the name of the column of type varchar(10)
but I get an error: +[nQSError: 10058] A general error has occurred. [nQSError: 43113] Message returned from OBIS. [nQSError: 27002] Near <->: Syntax error [nQSError: 26012]+
If I execute the same query directly on the MySQL database, I get the desired result without any error.
Also, if I use the following formula, I also get an error:
CAST((SUBSTRING("TableName"."ColumnName" FROM 1 FOR 4)) AS INTEGER)
So, I am asking why the first query throws an error in OBIEE 11g but not when it runs directly on the MySQL database. Also, how can I convert in OBIEE 11g a string to integer?

It could mean several different things. Do you know if the administrator have shut down the services? If you have access to the server, check to see if all the services are up and running.

Issue After Upgraded to OBIEE 11g in Production

Recently We upgraded all from OBIEE 10g to 11g in Production.
Everything is fine but when we run our charts we get the error. When we double click the error message, we got the following:

Constraining writeback values (OBIEE 11g)

Hi, have a quick question. For a very simple OBIEE write back application, we'd like to collect some high level category info and a text description from end users. For the text description it will be completely free form, but for the category info, I'd like to constrain the writeback field so that the end users can only enter a valid value from a list of 10 or so categories.
Is this possible to do? Would be really great if for the category column, instead of showing a text box, if it could be a dropdown constrained to the values we want....but no clue if that's possible.

ScottI dont have a solution for this but just wanted to share some thoughts. This functionality you are trying to build is pretty easy if you are building a jspx page using Jdeveloper via ADF. With the limitations of OBIEE's write back capabilities, you might want to take a look at the advantage of the action frame work which can be used to integrate OBIEE reports with external jspx page to pass values from columns etc which can inturn be passed into the SQL that would run behind the scene's of the jsp page, and you can build all the writeback functionalities you need there.
We have implemented similar solution for a requirement, and taking the writeback functionality to an external page had opened us so many possibilities.
I know this might require a resource that can build stuff like this in Jdeveloper, but IMHO it's not that hard to learn. Oracle has pretty detailed material which should get you through building something like this if you decided to.

Issue with Oracle Application Adapter (11g) for SAP

Hi,
I need to call a WSDL file that is generated through Oracle Application Adapter Application Explorer from a BPEL Composite in SOA 11g.
The wsdl files are stored under the path $SOA_HOME/soa/thirdparty/ApplicationAdapters/wsdls by default.
I’m not able to see the wsdls in the Resource Pallette while trying to invoke the adapter. Kindly let me know the workaround for the issue.

For SOA 11G, in order to access the BAPI WSDLs ,you need a third party adapter service which comes with Jdeveloper version 11.1.1.2.0 . I am not sure if this is available with Jdeveloper version 11.1.1.1.0. So make sure you have the correct version of Jdev for development.
Also in 11g when you generate the WSDL(outbound service) from AE, 4 files are generated.
XXXX_invoke.jca
XXXX_invoke_request.xsd
XXXX_invoke_response.xsd
XXXX_invoke.wsdl
You need to copy these 4 files to your Jdev project folder and configure the third party adapter service to invoke the SAP BAPIs. Hope this helps.

Issue with federation between OBIEE 11.1.1.5 and Essbase ASO Cube 11.1.2.1

Hi All,
I am trying to retrieve relational attributes from a confirmed dimension to the Essbase Cube.
However I am facing lot of issues/errors during rpd development.
Both the Essbase Cube hierarchy and Table that contians attributes are from same relational source.
Essbase 11.1.2.1 and OBIEE 11.1.1.5 are both cmpatabile versions.

You shouldn't have to restart Essbase as it should automatically sync, there may be additional information in SharedServices_Security_Client.log though it is probably worth logging with Oracle.

Issue while exporting report - OBIEE 11g - IIS 7.5

We are currently on OBIEE 11.1.1.7.0 version of OBIEE and we have set up proxy through IIS 7.5 on Windows 2008 R2 server.
While exporting our reports, we need to ensure that both Export to excel options (2003 and 2007+) are working fine. However, for some reports, when we try to download the reports to Excel 2007+ format, we get a "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" error message. This issue does not appear if we change the URL to directly access Weblogic server (instead of routing through IIS). Wanted to know if anyone have faced similar issue and have found any solution/workaround for same.

Facing issues with R12 and SOA 11g integration using Business events

Hi,
I am trying to integrate R12 application with Fusion using 11g SOA suite. I configured BES in R12 application and I am able to raise a business event and query it from WF_BPEL_Qtab. I have an Oracle applications adapter listening for the same event in SOA composite deployed over a server. I have verified the DB connection and schema for R12 application in 11g SOA server. However, no SOA instance is being generated. No server log as well.
I understand that 11g SOA uses EDN (using fusion_edn schema) for business events. Are there any changes expected to be done to Oracle Apps adapter to ensure the event is received.
P.S. Oracle apps adapter configuration is probably correct as the out bound calls are taking place correctly.

Problem with rank in OBIEE 11G

I have a problem with the function rank in obiie, i have two columns the first is the id of employees, and the second is the rank of revenues of employees, when I filter one employee and the rank is always 1, someone can help me?

I do not think this is going to be possible using a traditional filter on the query.
In order for the rank function to correctly work, it has to be aware of the other column values in the query to assign a rank to each row. When you filter the query ( either on the ID or the Rank) all of the other column values will be FILTERED OUT of the query. Rank will only see 1 value in the column, so it gets the #1.
You have 2 options here:
Selection steps: use selection steps to "keep" only the rows you are interested in. Selection steps basically allow you to"hide" some of the rows your query has returned, but still calculate against them for aggregate functions. If you are focusing on a top or bottom % this solution will work well.
If you are hell-bent on using a filter, the only way you will be able to get the rank function to work is to calculate the rank in a 2nd query, then use an outer join to attach the rank column onto your filtered employee query.

Issue making graphs in OBIEE 11g

I have requirement to make a line-bar graph in Answers.
metrics that i have to use are Best price, commit price and Close price
so the there would be a three bar showing data for all the the three metric. And there would be a line in the graph that should start from closed price, then go to Closed price + commit Price value and finally end at the value of summation of all three i.e. Commit+ closed+ best. So it would be a 3 bar and a trend line.
To implement that I have tried using union of 3 report and calculated the sum of the required trend line in the reports. So kind of output that i get is :
Closed price     |     Commit Price     |     Best Price     |     Cumulative total.
     1                              2                             3                         1                    (only closed amount)
     1                              2                             3                         3                    (Closed + Commit amount)
     1                              2                             3                         6                    (Closed + commit + Best amount)
so when i draw the Graph, i get the values of the bar correctly. But the value of line instead of coming as trend shows a dot on the graph with value as 1.
I am not really sure if the approach that i am taking is correct or not , so kindly request to please help me to make the trend line on the graph.
