It crashed hard and I can't restore it

Hi!
I tried to 'upgrade' in place with the installation disk. It says it can't because the installed version is newer than the disk. The disk is Windows 7 Pro, the box is Windows 7 Pro SP1.
How can I recover this? Would an upgrade to Windows 10 Technical Preview be likely to fix it? I have been running 10 on a laptop for a few months and I like it.
The story:
My main dev box crashed during a long compile last night. I had some other things running as well. When I restarted it, it ran (or at least seemed to run) about 20 seconds. After that, the screen background whent white and a messagebox came up saying that
Windows stopped responding.
I loaded up in safe mode, did the usual restore from earlier -- No change.
Then I did a system repair -- No change.
Booted from installation disk and tried repair. No luck.

Hi,
We wonder that if you took any action before this issue occurred such as installed a device/program or updated any driver programs.
Check your issue under clean boot.

Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files

Since Windows 10 is still in Technical preview stage, we don’t suggest fixing system problem by using system upgrade. And as mentioned by Frederik Long, There is no "downgrade" path from Windows 10 to Windows 7.

D. Wu
