It's gotta be simple, but I'm still stumped.
I just can't see how to compile a mxml file into a swf when I'm on a local machine and I plan to transfer my swf to my server.
I have a mxml file with a call to a cfc. It is my understanding that Flex will compile it into a binary swf - but then I can't access or change the pointer to the cfc. Can someone please tell me how we are supposed to tell it where the new location will be?
Here's what I do. In the event I think something may change in the future , such as a server or image location i just stuff it into an xml file. So I would create an xml file called info.xml and it would look something like this.

<location>www.servinsomethinup.com</location>
</root>
Place that in the root directory of the swf folder. Then when your app loads up , just use an httpservice call to read the xml.location variable , and make that the destination of your service calls. That way you can read and modify the xml file without having to recompile the binary.

It sounds SO SIMPLE but i'm STILL having trouble with this!!
Well after tinkering with Java for three years i thought i was pretty comfortable with it but lo and behold i am completely stuck on the SIMPLEST problem: The good ole classpath. I've always run javac from the dir that has my .java files and never needed to specify the classpath before.
But now for this uni assignment i've got to use servlest, requiring sticking the servlet.jar file in the classpath. I CAN'T DO IT!!
I've tried both setting the CLASSPATH variable in DOS and using the -classpath option in javac, but it just won't recognize it!! My .java files and the servlet.jar file reside in the d:\cse3400 directory.
I've typed at the D:\> prompt:
D:\>SET CLASSPATH=D:\cse3400;D:\cse3400\servlet.jar
then executed javac from the D:\> prompt:
D:\>javac ServletContainer.java
and i get the message
count = 0, total = 52
error: cannot read: ServletContainer.java
count = 0, total = 52
1 error
if i type,
D:\>echo %CLASSPATH%
i get
D:\cse3400;D:\cse3400\servlet.jar
i've also tried just typing:
D:\>javac -classpath d:\cse3400;d:\cse3400\servlet.jar ServletContainer
but i get the same thing.
I've tried the above with only one path mentioned (removing the need for ; seperators) but it still can't find the sourcefile unless i'm in that dir or specify the full path with the filename on javac. I've checked and double checked case sensitve stuff, even renaming the dirs to make sure.
So i really need to get servlet.jar in my classpath somehow, coz otherwise i get the error:
ServletContainer.java:12: cannot resolve symbol
symbol : class ServletConfig
location: package servlet
import javax.servlet.ServletConfig;
I've also tried sticking servlet.jar in the d:\jdk1.3.1\jre\lib\ext directory but that don't work either.
I'm running JDK 1.3.1 for win32 but i've also tried (and failed) with JDK 1.2.2 for win32. I've un-installed them both then just re-installed 1.3.1 incase there was some sort of version conflict or something.
Could someone pleeeeeez help??? I've spent about 6 hours trying to find solutions in zillions of places and all i get is set the CLASSPATH in dos or use -classpath, and IT DOESNT WORK!!!
-FrustratedIt sounds like you're confused between classpath and sourcepath.
The classpath contains class files - compiled Java.
Java source is usually compiled from the directory that contains it (its root package anyway) or by specifying the directory that contains the source. Don't do this by giving the full filename to the source file since this might lead to confusion over the package the code belongs to.
The generated class files then need to be on the classpath for java to run them.
Compare these two lines, one that does the compiling and one that runs:
javac -classpath c:/jars/servlet.jar ServletContainer.java
java -classpath c:/jars/servlet/jar;. ServletContainerNotice that the java command includes the current directory in the classpath since this is where the ServletContainer.class file will be found after compilation. I don't think that it's necessary to include the current directory in the classpath (java used to look there by default) but if you get in the habit of making your classpath explicit every time you'll have fewer problems with it.
If you wanted to get your code compiled somewhere else you'd do something like this:
cd src
javac -classpath c:/jars/servlet.jar -d ../classes ServletContainer.jar
cd ..
java -classpath c:/jars/servlet.jar;classes/ ServletContainerThis then looks in the classes directory for classes too.

Can someone please tell me a simple but effective method for burning a slideshow to DVD? Now that the connection between iPhoto and iDVD no longer exists, I can't figure out a way to get there with an acceptable quality result.
Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar. Select Size = Medium or Large.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it. If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailier like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Software or eBay.com. Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides themes from iDVD 5-7. The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:

Simple but reliable small office setup
Hi group,
I need some advice on setting up a simple but reliable small office wireless network. Up until now, we had a consumer AP combined with wired connections. However, we're moving to a new office where it's difficult to implement a wired network and we decided to implement a good quality wireless network.
So, I was looking into business quality wireless AP's and it looks as if the Aironet 1600 is an interesting option. However, I'm not a (wireless) network specialist and have no knowledge of controlled AP's.
The office is (only) 278 square meters (24 x 11.6), divided in two main areas by a supporting wall with two large doorways. I would like to keep the setup costs to a minimum, ideally using only 1 AP. This might mean placing the AP on the ceiling near the dividing wall (which is roughly in the middle), or on the wall itself.
We need to support fast wireless connections from 15 laptop computers now, and up to 25 in the near future. Also, we'd like to support 15-25 mobile devices, i.e. tablets or smart phones.
I've found some info on the differences between the AIR-CAP1602 and AIR-SAP1602 models, as well as the Internal and External antenna versions. It seems to me we could use the Standalone (SAP1602) model. However, I don't have enough knowledge to determine if the Aironet 1600 is actually appropriate for our requirements and if yes, which model.
I would very much appreciate your advice!A 1600 would work or even a 2600. I prefer the 2600/3600 though but cost is your concern. I would also place the AP on the ceiling but belies the ceiling maybe in the middle if possible. Don't place the AP above the ceiling because you will loose coverage. Internal antennas are fine and just to note, rule of thumb is 25 users per AP so just in case you need more throughput, maybe using two separated by 3-5 meters would help also. If the 1600's are the choice for you then look at having one or two APs.

How do I save to mixdown in mono, 0 db reduction in volume, (Same volume level as in the files-no -3db reduction) in 64 bps mp3? Sounds simple, but none of the support staff has been able to do it.
Several solutions to this problem. I believe we may have discussed this over the support e-mail, but I'll share it again here so that it can help others as well.
First, as I discussed in the e-mail, Audition defaults to support Pan Law which prevents content mixed to the center of a Stereo field from being louder than the same content panned far left or right. This provides a -3dB drop to center content by default, but you can disable this completely by entering Preferences > Multitrack and setting the Default Panning Mode to Left/Right Cut (Logarithmic)
Now, when you create a new Multitrack session, there is an option to specify the Master channelization. Here, you can select Mono, Stereo, or 5.1 and this will be the default channelization mode for a basic mixdown operation regardless of your clip content, though can be overridden when exporting a session mixdown.
Next, if you just choose the menu item Multitrack > Mixdown Session to New File... it will always default to the Master channelization. This command does not write to disk, it is a preview or pre-processing step. If you wish to export your multitrack session mixdown directly to disk, in your desired channelization and file format, please use the command File > Export > Multitrack Mixdown > Entire Session... You will then have the complete set of output options, including the option to output at any channelization you like and the format you prefer.
Here, I've disabled the default 5.1 output and selected a Mono mixdown instead.
I've now changed the file format settings as well to MP3, 64K.
With most of these configuration details, you should only need to set them once and these will remain the defaults for any subsequent projects, unless modified again. The Export Multitrack Mixdown dialog will reset the Mixdown options to match the default output, and the MP3 settings may update to reflect the kBps setting nearest your session sample rate. -

After downloading a pdf from a website, how can I view the file in Safari 6.0.4 (just as I can in Safari 5.0.6)? I bet that it's simple, but I've missed something, somewhere, and a solution will be greatly appreciated.

Thank's for your efforts, and I just wish that this was the solution. Unfortunately, it isn't because, after double-clicking on the pdf in the website, it simply "opens" in another Safari window as a black screen - the pdf is there, somewhere, but not visible (either as an icon, or as a document).
When I right-click in the black Safari window, where the file is supposed to be, the only option available to display the file is to "Open file in Internet Explorer" (which is not what I want to do). Other options include saving or printing the pdf, which I don't want until I've confirmed that it's the form that I want. The same options are offered if I right-click on the file icon in the website.
Any other suggestions, please? -
Since I got Fireworks 8 last week, I've worked through the
accompanying 'Getting Started' manual and much of 'Training from
the Source' by Patti Schulze. While I love the program, I'm
frustrated by a difficulty that may be simple but is exasperating
for me.
When I create an image and try to save it as a .gif, jpg or
png file for use in Dreamweaver,I find that I repeatedly time and
time and tiime and time without end, simply lose the image.
How can I resolve this difficulty?In FW 8, if you have a new image with multiple objects, you
can "save"
as PNG only, but you can "save as" any FW supported format,
without all
the html attributes associated with the Export dialog. With
many
formats, you will get the option to "save a copy" so you
don't flatten
your original artwork.
And of course, you can "Export" too.
That directory location issue is a pain. There is some kind
of logic
there, but I can never remember what it is. lol

I haven't a clue what they are. I've read about them online and in the Java API, and I still have no idea what they are.
My current understanding is this: a constructor is code dedicated towards defining how to treat a variable.
But...I have to write two programs using constructors and I have no idea what to put in them. And in fact everything I've tried gives compiler errors. I'm sure all of you know the quiet desperation and frustration I'm feeling.
Anyway, the assignments are:
1) Create a class called Employee that includes three pieces of information as instance variables - a first name (type String), a last name (type String) and a monthly salary (double). Your class should have a constructor that initializes the three instance variables. Provide a set and a get method for each instance variable. If the monthly salary is not positive, set it to 0.0.
Write a test application named EmployeeTest that demonstrates class Employee's capabilities. Create two Employee objects and display each object's yearly salary. Then give each Employee a 10% raise and display each Employee's yearly salary again.
2) Create a class called Date that includes three pieces of information as instance variables - a month (type int), a day (type int), and a year (type int). What I am try to do seems simple but I can't get it to work the way I want it.
I am trying to write a query to display Galleries from the LUGallery tbl that have a Sub Gallery attached to them (ie. It's GalleryID appears in the LUSubGallery tbl)
So the query for the above example would list Australia, Weddings & Landscapes
I have tried to write code both with inner joins and nested queries but just can't get it right,

Then you probably do not want include all the extra columns from the LUSubGallery table.
It returns all of the records from both tables that Have
the same GalleryID
That is the way this type of JOIN works. It will return one record for each matched GalleryID. If you only want to display the unique gallery names you can either:
1) Use an EXISTS clause. It will return the distinct records from the main gallery table IF a matching record exists in the LUSubGallery table

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now. About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

I'm trying to send (email) photos from iPhoto. Computer says it doesn't recognize my user name or password. I've never had a problem emailing photos.....until now. Any suggestions? I'm sure it's simple but I don't know it!

I'VE TRIED THREE DIFFERENT THINGS AND NONE OF THEM WORK!Mail would be a good choice, unless you are using another email client, like Outlook. There is likely something wrong with the account setup in iPhoto. You may need to delete the account you set up and enter it again if you want to send with iPhoto instead of with Mail.
Give this a try to see what might be wrong: Drag a photo from iPhoto onto the Mail icon in the Dock. It will create a new message with the photo attached. If you click on the photo in Mail, it should show a popup menu to allow you to set the image size to send.
Check out some of the links in the More Like This section to the right. There might be some other suggestions. -
I am un able to send mail as it gets stuck in my outbox. This is a recent phenomena. I am sure the solution is simple but need help?
I looked everywhere for a solution - and I finally figured it out! Deleting my accounts didn't work, but here is what worked. This worked when my Gmail accounts were not sending properly. I'm not sure if it works for other e-mail services.
1. While in Mac Mail, click "Mail" in the top left corner of the screen
2. Click "Preferences"
3. Click "Accounts"
4. Select your account that isn't sending properly
5. In "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)" there will be two options - Gmail & Gmail (offline)
Make sure that "Gmail" is selected and NOT "Gmail (offline)"
If you navigate to another section in Preferences, it will ask you to SAVE - make sure you save your changes!
It worked for me, hope it works for you! -
Hello Illustrator group:
I just began learning the program, after years of working on PS, ID, AF, PrePro, etc. and have been working on a project that requires Illustrator. It should be simple, but for the life of me, I can't figure out a way to do it.
I already put a graphic together in PS CS4 but it prints a little blurry, the reason I want to do it in Illustrator.
Any suggestions, or observations will be greatly appreciated.

The logo is a musical clef interwined with the letter C.The file looks very good, but I keep having the same display problem with Acrobat. I know the whole file is there by the thumbnail. Also, if I export it to jpg or tiff the file looks fine.
Now, this is something that never happened when I used the graphic from PS CS4 as the logo. I started having problems when I placed the AI CS4 file in ID CS4, then export to Acrobat.
The problem with the faint lines disappeared once I traced the original clef from the PS file in AI. Before I used the clef glyph and increased its size to specs.
One last item is that I'm noticing that the black background is not as rich as I would like. Is there a way to improve this? I included a link so you can download and view the test file. Let me know if you see the black background.

PS: I output a pdf file by "printing" to the pdf printer, instead of exporting and I see the file fine. Does this mean that it is the "exporting" parameters that are giving me trouble? -
Simple but potentially huge webos feature, 'flip' a card to dock it.
my idea is this, there should be a docking feature to 'flip' cards which could be used on any app. the card wouldn't be on the screen, but it would still be opened and running.
to access these flipped cards do a forward gesture, this would display the docked cards onscreen. then forward gesture again to but them back in the 'dock'.
I think it would really help to make more use of multitasking.I'm not sure I understand.
I'm thinking what is being requested is to have a second place to hold open cards, so that you can scroll through a subset of what is open.
The metaphor I was thinkng of is what the Mac does, which is a list of documents that springs out of their docking bar.
Apple calls them "stacks" and I think that might be interesting.
One thing, though... I seem to find that battery life is reduced by having lots of applications open, so I find myself only keeping the phone and the browser open. I just start and stop others when I need them.
Because of that, multitasking hasn't been quite as useful as I was expecting...
