what exactly doesn't work?
boot from the leopard install DVD and repair the startup disk (repair disk, not permissions) using disk utility.

  • INVALID VOLUME FILE COUNT and INVALID VOLUME DIRECTORY COUNT

Every few days, something on my machine is causing an invalid volume file count and an invalid volume directory count. Error message will read something like:
    Invalid volume file count
(it should be 520176 instead of 520178)
    Invalid volume directory count
(it should be 152750 instead of 152748)
This causes the machine to lock up.
This is my SECOND machine (same set up on the previous machine) that is experiencing these issues. Once I run the disk utility off of the original OS disk everything is fine.

Invest in a couple things - backup drive, Disk Warrior, and SuperDuper
Install OS X to part of your external (small and just big enough for an emergency system and minimal programs).
Booting off DVD is fine, but no Finder and you are limited to the (older) version of Disk Utility on there (and it does get updated and changed).
Clone your system for boot backup, especially before updates and changes.
Disk Warrior recognizes and repairs more issues, some of which Apple First Aid doesn't even look for.
So even though it appears okay afterward...
Next would be to run Apple Hardware Test, and along with that check your RAM with MEMTEST (REMBER is handy and is just GUI wrapper to memtest program) or run Memtest yourself from the Terminal.

  • Invalid volume file count and directory count

My wife's macbook pro started shutting down by itself randomly, so i performed Disk Utility Verify Disk and found these errors:
    Invalid volume file count
(It should be 800651 instead of 800653)
    Invalid volume directory count
(It should be 191005 instead of 191003)
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
As i do not have the Mac OS Leopard disks physically with me, I target-disk started her mac on my mac, and use my mac to run Disk Utility on her hard-disk, and repaired the disk without problems.
However, this is the 3rd or 4th time this has happened. After the 1st time, i figured something is causing it, so i checked this forum, and found that for some, the Blackberry Messenger app causes programs, so i promptly uninstalled it fully (including associated system files) and this problem didnt come back for a while.
Or could this be a sign the hard disk is physically failing soon? It is out of warranty now. We have regular TimeMachine backups. We are actually kinda waiting out until the new line of macbook pro's come out.. (hopefully in June at WWDC)
Any suggestions as to how else to address this? Thanks!
    Laptop stats: MacBook Pro 15"

Well, the disk errors are due to corruption caused by the random power downs, so focus on getting that issue solved first. What's the stats on the battery?

  • I'm having trouble with my computer, I boot it up and within a few minutes it freezes and I have to restart it, I tried updating it to the latest mavericks but it won't finish the installation it's stuck at the end, what can I do to fix this?

As stated I'm having trouble with my computer, I boot it up and within a few minutes it freezes and I have to restart it, I tried updating it to the latest mavericks but it won't finish the installation it's stuck at the end, what can I do to fix this? I need it for homework tonight.

    Crowntheme,
you can try this: boot your MacBook Pro into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the Mac OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it still freeze after a few minutes?

  • Is it possible to take the singing off and just have the music?

Hey, I'm new to Adobe and I wanted to make a CD for Christmas presents of my sibs and me singing some of our fav songs and I was wondering if theres a way to take the singing off and just have the music.  If so how do i do it?

Why not? As long as the SIMs are from the same carriers the phone(s) is/are locked to, if ithey are locked.

  • I run Windows 7 and the newest version (10.6) of iTunes will not install. The installer won't even begin, and when I run the Apple Software update, it tells me that iCloud and iTunes have invalid signature.

When I run the Apple Software update, it tells me that iCloud and iTunes have invalid signature and will not be downloaded. When I DL iTunes64setup.exe, the program will not start (there's a bar that flashes but nothing actually begins). I've done everything short of reinstalling Windows to fix this (system resore, unistalling all Apple products, taking down firewall, running Windows FixIt - which either won't find the problem or gives me an error saying that the troubleshooter cannot be downloaded at this time, going into the security features to allow programs without valid signatures, trying to install earlier versions of iTunes). It all started when I downloaded the Decemberists new album on my iPhone, and it wasn't downloading it properly so I connected it to my Dell, but some songs still wouldn't DL - also, the newest OS for my iPhone still won't install via WiFi - and so I uninstalled iTunes first, but nothing is helping. And I don't have any security issues (Norton has checked). Any ideas? I'm at my wit's end after 3 days of this. Thank you.

Ok, so after like 4 days of going through all these different issues, I figured out that several programs weren't downloading, and it was an issue with my wireless connectivity messing up the digital signatures, so if you plug in your comp to the modem and delete your temp files, it should start to work!

  • My volume button has jammed in and and I have the volume mute logo constantly in the centre of my screen. Can I isolate the switch?

My volume button has jammed in and I have the volume mute icon constantly in the centre of my screen. Can I isolate the switch to remove the icon?

It can probably be repaired but of course you have no warranty since it does not cover user damage. If the back can be removed (not easy, see iFixit.com), I'm sure the dented area can be bent back out allowing the switch to operated normally but it would likely need to be done from the inside of the aluminum back...kind of like repairing a dent in a car (without using a dent puller).

  • My volume buttons aren't working and I have no volume bar so no music will play, what do I do?

The volume buttons on my phone are clicking correctly but no volume is changing and it doesn't pop up on my screen. I don't have any volume on my music or my apps and I have no volume slide bar either, it's just a black box. What do I do to fix this?

I don't think there is any alternative to this. Apple introduced this measure some time ago in response (I think) to the number of people who were requesting replacement headphones when there was nothing faulty with the original ones.

  • Why does my new Air getting a "hang up" on the Internet in about 10 minutes of work and I have to close it and open it and go on...?

Why does my new Air getting av "hang up" on the Internet in about 10 minutes and I have to lock it and then start again????

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you also have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

i updated my iphone and i have no volume

You may have to turn it off tonight and try turning it back on tomorrow. Check your Facetime activation and see if it is still waiting as well. Turn them both off, do a reset on the phone, then try to turn them both on again. A reset is done by holding the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. It will not affect your data.

  • Firefox web surf slow. Pages take minutes to load, and sometimes they dont load at all. I have win xp sp3. Thanks

Hello. I have windows xp sp3,and latest firefox, i think 26. And sometimes, not all the time, but most of it,my web browsing is so slow, i mean google search, web pages load, etc. Like minutes before it loads, and when finally does, sometimes i see only text ,in web pages, not images.
I have speed,as i can download torrents with 7 Mb/sec. Just web surfing is slow, painfully slow.
My question is,if you bear with me, is this a browser problem or a windows one ??
(i dont exclude even the possibility for the nice guys at microProose to inject a thing in windoze to make it slow,so we upgrade,in the light of recent discoveries:) .
    thanks in advance.

  • Firefox hangs for about 5 minutes on startup and about that long each time I try to do something. How do I fix this?

My problem is basically that Firefox is deadly slow and unusable because of its slowness. It takes about 5 minutes (I haven't timed it) to bring up a window after I click on the Firefox icon in the dock. It beachballs for a while after the window comes up, and then for about five minutes after I click on the "new tab" button next to the current tab, directly above the address bar.
When I went to get the Troubleshooting Information, it didn't take too long. I was able to click on the Help menu, ask for troubleshooting, wait (a while), and then once the page loaded, I was able to copy the information and scroll around the troubleshooting page without difficulty. Other than that, I haven't had the patience to get to any websites. I'm sending this request from inside Safari.
I used Firefox 24 without any problem. I was unable to automatically upgrade to Firefox 25, so I downloaded it, deleted the old application, and went on my way. I started having this problem, so I took some steps based on the Knowledge Base (not listed in the order I tried them in):
    I reset Firefox
I reinstalled Firefox (deleted the old application from the applications folder and dragged in the application from the mounted .dmg again)
    I deleted the profile folder
    I restarted my computer
I confirmed that I'm not running antivirus software
I verified and repaired my disk with Disk Utility, which showed no errors
I ran Rember (one pass), which showed no errors
I started Firefox in Safe Mode
I have twice now gotten the red bar that says, "The bookmarks and history system will not be functional because one of Firefox's files is in use by another application. Some security software can cause this problem." I am not running antivirus. I tried renaming places.sqlite to places.sqlite.old (there was no places.sqlite-journal), which prevented the red bar from coming up the next time I started Firefox, but two or three Firefox force-quits and relaunches later, it's back again.
Right now I'm looking at 'top' in Terminal, and here's Firefox:
PID COMMAND %CPU TIME #TH #WQ #POR #MREG RPRVT RSHRD RSIZE VPRVT VSIZE PGRP PPID STATE UID
    454 firefox 0.0 00:02.80 25 2 183 534 64M 47M 102M 120M 2894M 454 144 sleeping 1049
Could it be a plugin? I'm not sure where to get this information.
I can post logs from Rember and Disk Utility if that would help.
I am also currently trying to load about:crashes, but right now Firefox is trying to load "https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/fix-bookmarks-and-history-will-not-be-functional?blahblahblah" and there is a little thing that says "Looking up support.cdn.mozilla.net..." at the bottom of the window, so I'm waiting for it to give up on that. To give you an idea of how long it's taking, it already was trying to reach this URL when I started writing this.
    Thanks in advance!

  • My 30-inch cinema display often doesn't come on at startup and I have to disconnect it and reconnect to work.

I have a 30-inch cinema display connected to a Mac Mini.  When I first boot up the computer after having it shut down for a couple of days, the display screen does not illuminate about half the time.  If I disconnect the display from the power brick and then reconnect it usually comes on, although sometimes I have to do that more than once.  It works fine once it on and displaying.  Anyone else seeing this?

  • I installed Canon software on my macpro laptop and it takes forever to startup and shut down

Hello.  I recently got a Canon Rebel T3 and in order to download photos to my macbook pro I had to install their software.  Well, after installing it, it takes VERY long to shut down and start up my laptop.  Can someone help?  I already deleted the software off the laptop, but that hasn't seem to fix the issue.

"... I already deleted the software off the laptop, but that hasn't seem to fix the issue."
I doubt that the software was the issue. So why not tell us what model MBP you have and how much free space is on the hard drive. When was the last time you booted to the OS installer disk and run Repair Disk from Disk Utility? BTW, you may not need their software to download pictures to your Mac. Launch iPhoto and from the menu: iPhoto>Preferences>General: Connecting Camera Opens.....
