Italics in Pages

I can't seem to get paragraphs/documents to display italic text on the screen. Even though the italics icon is highlighted in the format section of the toolbar and pull down menu, the text does not change on screen. All other formatting options (bold, underline, etc.) seem to work fine. Is anyone having this problem?

This isn't a problem. Pages uses only those fonts that have italics and bold (and combinations thereof) designed for them. No faux fonts. You'll note if you look though the others fonts in the Font pane that some have these variations and some don't. Your solution is to choose another font.

  • Track changes showing multiple entries for a single change?

    Hi there .. I'm using Pages '09 v4.1 to edit MS Word '97 documents. I've been using the 'track changes' feature to work on chapters in a book and have done so with no problems so far (about 6 chapters so far in separate files). I went to start the next chapter and noticed that when I make a single change such as highlighting a word and making it italic, the tracking bubbles will show up as individual entries for every letter instead of for a single word. The really annoying thing is that it's not consistent .. some whole-word changes show up as a single entry, while some show as a few entries but don't necessarily correspond to how many letters are in the word being changed. When I try deleting specific tracking bubbles to see which part of the word they correspond to, it varies. For example, if I put the word "similar" in italics on page one, paragraph one, it shows up as 2 entries. When I delete the last entry, "imilar" will go back to standard font, while "s" stays italic until I delete the other entry. It's as though the words in the document are being recognized based on something other than the obvious, and certain letters are being grouped together in the program's brain, while others are separate.
    It's not isolated to italics, btw. If I reformat the entire document to be left-aligned instead of center-aligned, it will show lots of separate tracking bubbles in various places through the document, rather than showing one bubble for my single change.
    I've tried duplicating and saving a new version of the document, as well as creating a new doc and pasting everything into that and saving as a new doc, though I wasn't sure if this would carry over the problem .. It did.
    It's not the end of the world as far as finishing this job, but it's pretty annoying and will be worse for the person who ultimately verifies the changes I've made. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Missing Editor buttons

    This is the 4.1 trial version of Contribute CS3.
    On the top panel, I select Edit Page, the editable page
    displays after Contribute does it's copying and manipulating of the
    files, but the top panel displays two rows of gray where the Text
    Bold, Italics, Underline, Page Publish, Save Draft buttons etc.
    should show up. I have uninstalled this and reinstalled it with the
    same results. This is on a Compaq US2100 laptop. 512MB RAM and a
    2.4mhz Celeron.
    I installed it on my PC at home and it works fine so it isn't
    the installer. Is there an issue with the laptop or the software? I
    don't want to buy and suggest this option to my client if there is
    a possibility it may not work on her laptop. When the product runs,
    it works very well and will meet her needs.

    I wound up updating my video driver but that didn't help
    either. Then after messing around with Contribute for about a half
    an hour or so.... presto, the editor buttons showed up. I think it
    had something to do with not being "connected" to the site in
    Contribute.
    Anyway, it's working now. Thanks for the help.

  • Accessing Descriptive FlexField segments

    I have to retreive the segments of a DFF in an OAF page for validation purpose.
    The DFF segments are displayed as LOV (Value Set: ListOfValues) in the page.
    I tried to get a handle using the following code:

    Now the values are being captured all right ..but on clicking any of the DFF segment LoV Search button the LoV search Page is throwing the Error:
    Cannot find LOV view object (FlexDynamicLovVO) in LOV AM.
    flex lov info not availabel for DescFlex10 segment
    I have not created any LOV view objects and if i remove the code in PFR (in italics) the page is working fine.

  • Looking for Chicago Italic Font

    Aloha gang:
    As you know, Pages only has our good friend Chicago font in the regular face.
    I have tons of prior work/logo/webpages made via Appleworks using the italic & bold versions. Spent several hours googling but not finding.
    DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHERE I CAN GET THIS FONT ???

    Hullo Don:
    Actually I don't have Chicago in my font collection with Pages at all. From your post I assume that the regular version must be included with the "Classic" version of Mac Os, which (not having any legacy files) I have chosen not to load.
    You would seem to be correct in your observation that Pages will not synthesize (or "fake") italics by simply obliquing the regular font, whereas Appleworks would seem to do this. I tried Andale on both to check.
    A comprehensive selection of "Chicago" fonts can be found on www.Fonts.com, however. If you know the font, you will recognise whether these include your old friend, or are simply a different collection under the same name. I suspect, however, that what was included in Os 9 might well have been just a subset of the complete family, as bundled fonts not uncommonly are.
    Notwithstanding, the genuine italics (which will be better designed, from a typographical standpoint) may not completely answer your need. If your hope was to import Appleworks including Chicago italics into Pages, the italicised fonts may not necessarily be recognised even if you bought and loaded and installed the true italic version. Having no Appleworks documents, I am unable to experiment with whether Pages will recognise the italicised font as belonging to a Chicago font it knows. If it does, the import would probably not be italicised - but if you had the genuine italic font you could then reformat the original obliqued font with it
    On the other hand, if the currently available set is the one you know, and you installed it in your Pages accessible collection, you could "paste and match style" (having established a style in Chicago Italic) into Pages documents. The result, if the fonts indeed match, would not be identical - but would match the style of your previous documents except with the typeface discernibly refined. A true italic font is drawn afresh, with further adjustments to the regular font than just obliquing it. Sometimes it is altogether different, too; e.g., Didot - or most distinctly of all, Joannah.
    I also recall, from a post many moons ago, that there are also third party font manipulation programs that will allow you to synthesize an italic font from a regular one. Even these, though, might pose some problems with the font names clashing. The alternative is that Pages would fail to recognise the obliqued regular font, and return a "could not open ... missing font" message or the like.
    The post I distantly recall did encounter and resolve this problem. As I recall, it was found necessary to rename the generated italic font to distinguish it from the original.
    Be prepared, then, for a bit of tweaking, even if you do find the Fonts.com collection includes what you want. Otherwise, maybe another poster might remember the font manipulation program that was involved in the post I am sorry I dimly recall, or otherwise be familiar with a suitable font manipulation program to which to refer you.
    Your best bet might well boil down to i) whether the currently available Chicago italic is the font you're after, and ii) whether some typographical upgrading of your previous materials is better or worse for you than minutely conserving their original appearance.
    The fact that fake italics were ever considered acceptable in the first place suggests that few might notice the difference, other than in examples like the above. But (IMHO) Pages is pernickety just where it should be. It pays scrupulous regard to typography - which is really the root of its charm.

    It's working fine in other parts of the document, where font etc. is the exact same.
    I've tried to copy the entire text to a new document, without the track changes turned on, but the area remains locked for the italics option.
    Can anyone help me please?

    Menu > View > Show Styles Drawer
    Pages samples existing styled text to create the styles and you apply them by selecting text and clicking on the style in the Style Drawer. It will not override prexisting exceptions to the style in selected text but you can force the Style definition onto the text by double clicking on the style name.

  • Italicized text in Pages 5.2.2 won't show up in exported PDF

    I built a resume in pages within a table to control placement of elements on a single page. I usually export to PDF, because exporting to .docx throws off formatting. But when I export to PDF, italicized text won't appear. Why?

    Oh, I tried everything (and your suggestion) and then I looked it up in youtube and did the simplest thing! I just restarted the devices! Who would've thought...

    No, it stays with the current OS (iOS5 in this case) - Apple doesn't allow downgrading iOS
    If you are syncing to a desktop, you shoudln't lose anything. If you aren't syncing, then that's the first thing you should do, to protect contacts etc.
    the other thing is, when the iPad is connected to iTunes, right-click its name in the Devices list and choose Back Up.
    That way, when yoiu do the restore, everything should come back as was.

  • Converting Page Maker to inDesign- italics disappeared

    I received Page Maker files from a client and when I opened them in inDesign all of the italics disappeared. I have the fonts installed that were used to make the Page Maker file and the other fonts converted okay. Any ideas on how to keep the italics? I don't have Page Maker installed and I've never used it so I'm hoping I don't have to download a trial and try and save them from Page Maker.

    I'm sure some have gotten it to work but about the only posts that we
    ever see on the PM forum are about how to get it to work on Win 7 so I
    really don't recommend it.
    As for Mac, there is no way to install PM on anything that won't run
    rosetta. So you can forget 10.7.

  • InDesign: Creating Index Page Numbers in Italics

    I am indexing text in a book using the most recent version of InDesign. I want certain of the page numbers to be in italics to be in italics. It would appear that the way to do so is (1) go into New Page Reference, (2) create the topic or topics for what is being indexed, (3) click on Number Style Override, (4) open the menu to the right, (5) click on TEXT - Ital JTR, then (6) then click on OK. Will this work?

  • Quotation marks don't show up in any text on any web page, and any words that are italicized don't show up at all. Why?

    On all web pages any text in quotation marks shows this symbol | instead of this ". And any text that is in italics is not displayed at all.

    That is usually caused by a problem with corrupted or missing fonts.
    You can use this extension to see which fonts are used for selected text.<br />
    This may also work for blank areas if a font isn't working.

    When I choose an Italic font in Mail preferences, I find I need to re select the same font after I have opened Mail messages.
    I would like to use a font other than Helvetica and not have to select Italics every time I use Mail.
    The same goes for making an INDENT a permanent default feature, this will prevent printed items being too near the LHS.

    Is this an IMAP account?
    If so, delete the messages in Mail from all folders and quit Mail.
    Go the the website and clear the messages from all folders there.
    Reopen Mail and verify the messages have been deleted for all folders.

  • Exporting Pages documents as Word loses italics.

    Can they be preserved? How?
    I love Pages 4.1 otherwise. This makes me very sad.

    When you insert a piece of text using Times Italic, you no longer use the font :
    "TimesNewRomanPSMT" which is the standard one
    but : "TimesNewRomanPS-ItalicMT" which is the italic one.
    Maybe this one is unavailable in the PC running Word and so, substituted by the standard font.

  • Pages '08, formatting disappears from exported times new roman text

    I often work in Pages '08 with .doc files from colleagues. These invariably come in Times New Roman 12pt. When i export my files in word format, all formatting (bolds, italics etc.) has disappeared when they open the files on their own computers. If, however, I ask them to send back the file and opens it, the formatting is there. This seems to happen only when using Times New Roman, not i.e. Helvetica or (simply) Times. This is a very annoying bug, if that is what it is, which makes it hard to use Pages together with MS Word users. Anyone knows a way around this problem?

    In  the end, I've gone with Minion Pro, which I feel has a clean look, and a certain style without being distracting to the detriment of the text's meaning.  And the text volume is very much the same as under Times New Roman.
    So, how do people choose and categorise type?  Is there such a thing as a guide to type -- "Garamond gives an olde-worlde classical look, New Baskerville is New World Georgian" -- that sort of thing?  Yes, I realise it's broadly subjective, the feel that certain faces give, but aren't there some broad categorisations that can be made?  Or is it totally subjective, and up to the designer's mood and whim?
    I imagine everyone has his favourite faces -- my own for standard text is Caxton, but the Bitstream version, which is narrower and sharper than the Adobe one -- but if you want to branch out from the ones you're already familiar with, is there a way that people can get a guide or choose for a project, other than simply trying different faces until they find one they like?
