Item usage

hai all....
In determining a item category system takes in to account sales document type,item category group,higher level item category and item usage.so what actually are item usage and higher level item category. item category is linked to item group and order type in SPRO but where are item usage and higher level category linked to it.....?

Think the senario of free goods , when a customer orders for 10 pacs of A ,say we give 2 pacs of B as free.
how would the system understand this that for matl B it should not take price.
this is ecplained by higher level item category and usage.

  • Item Category determination using item usage

    Hi All,
    We have a scenario where we need to derive item category based on Item usage.
    We have defined a function module to derive at the item usage. Now we need to derive the item category based on this usage.
    We were able to do this and we are able to get the default item category for this. We have assigned few manual item categories also along with default.
    When we try to change the item category manually it is again resetting it to default item category.
    ex: OR LEIS  A  ->  Tan X    Y        (Where A is the usage,X and Y are manual item categories, OR is order typea nd LEIS is item category group)
    To expalin clearly the above Tan is getting determined as default correctly bit when we try to change it ti X it is not accepting.
    It is allowing to enter X and Y manually only if we have another entry above similar to this:
    OR LEIS    ->  Tan X    Y  (Without usage).
    Now we dont want the entry without usage.
    In debugging we noticed that usage field (VWPOS ) is blank.
    We understand that there is one function midule SD_VBAP_VWPOS_GET which derives usage for free goods,CMIR, repair items etc adn we are nto sure where they are calling this FM to so that the system determines item category based on usage.
    Cna anybody help on this please.

    Hi Raghu,
    you understading is correct.
    The purpose of using the usage in our scenario is to overcome the extra entry i.e without usage.
    We are deriving the usage but we are not sure where to call the Z function module so taht system will directly go to:
    Slaes doc type+ item category group+ Usage   -
    > IC
    with out checking for entry sales doc type+ item category -
    >  IC (in VOV4).
    The main purpose of using usage here is that system should directly go to the place where usage is used.
    It works fine when we go for CMIR and assign usage there but CMIR is not allowed.
    Please help.

           Usage field will tell what is the purpose of Particular Material
    Example
    FREE: For free goods Material
    CHSP: Batch Items
    TEXT: Text Materilals..etc
    Item Category Usage: It controls system response during document processing. The line item has an specific usage according to that usage it has to respond. Free for free items, text for text items etc.
    Usage field will covney the material details.
    The usage field tells whether it is related to the higher level of item category. and how that material given usage should behave in the partifular sales order line item. for example in free goods we give this usage as free and in text items and in material determination and in BOMS. u can also view this in CMIR.
    Item category Determination: Sales Document type + Item Category Group + Usage + Higher Level Item Category
    TA + NORM + FREE + TAN = TANN

    In VOV4, We maintain the Item Category Determination for sales use.
    I know that the following are the elements used in determining the item category:
    1. Sales Document Type
    2. Item Category Group
    3. Item USAGE
    4. Higher Level Item Category
    Now, My Question is,WHERE Exactly we use this "Item USAGE" in the transaction level.
    Is any one Having any IDEA where do we use this ITEM USAGE at transaction level ?
    Please be so kind and guide me finding its location in transactions.

    Hi,
    Taking an example for Batch management process.
    In Batch Management process from the SD perespective when we do delivery we have TWO Item Category that will be displaying in the Delivery Document.
    So there is a parent line item and then a sub line item.  Sub Line item will have the batch number and the quantity. There in order to determine these two line item from the Item category determination purpose this USAGE come into play.
    ITEM Category define - How you will control the behaviour of the material . Now for batch management process and the batch managed Material behaves in a different way.
    So this usage is used to map such bussiness scenario.  Frequently used are PACKING Scenario , Batch Management and Free goods.

    Let me take an example of Item Category TANN (Free of charge Item)
    Item category Determination: Sales Document type + Item Category Group + Usage + Higher Level Item Category
    TA + NORM + FREE + TAN = TANN
    Higher Level Item category: The category on which this item category is dependent. meaning for TAN , TANN is a free item. Therefor TAN is the higher level item category.
    Item Category Usage: It controls system response during document processing. The line item has an specific usage according to that usage it has to respond. Free for free items, text for text items etc.

    It looks like from your posting that "Stock of material A" is having shortage of quantity w.r.t to requirement quantity for the production order that is the reason it has pulled in material "B" in production order.
    <b>Key points to note</b>
    <b>Alternative item: strategy</b>
    This value defines how items in an alternative group are selected for withdrawal postings.<b>This strategy is ignored in material requirements planning (MRP).</b>
    <b>Use</b>
    The withdrawal posting for the reservation in the production order can be selected as follows:
    <b>According to usage probability (manual changes possible)</b>
    For all items that you want to reserve, enter:
        - Strategy (value 1 or no entry)
        - Priority (only influences how materials are sorted)
        - Usage probability
    <b>Withdrawal if 100% availability</b>
    For all items that you want to reserve, enter:
         - Strategy (value 2)
         - Priority (If you do not enter a priority, the system checks the items in the  sequence in which they are transferred to the availability check).
         - Usage probability

    Percentage probability that a material will be used in the assembly.

    Maintain selected usage probability

You can plan in excess for the alternative items since the usage probability is not limited to 100%. You can change the proposed quantities. Maintain no usage probability If you do not enter a usage probability, the alternative item just serves as information that can be evaluated, for example, in a situation with a missing part.
    You receive a warning since dependent requirements with 0 as quantity are created.
    But if the strategy is "2" - "100% check" then the material which fullfills the requirement will be reserved for the production order after availability check.
    <b>So In your case change the strategy to "1" so that reservation is carried out based on the probability</b>

    But i thought that with this kind os item usage, the ADDITIONALS subscreen will appear. But it doesn`t.

    I read already the discussions held around this subject, as I'm facing a similar problem for which I cannot find a solution.
    I have the need to set up a ItCat determination for sales order ZPD.
    The proposed ItCat must be <b>ZPDW</b>. However, for the NORM ItCat Group we have already a setup which cannot be changed.
    This is the present status.
    SaTy     ItCatGrp    Usage    HLevItCat        Proposed ItCat
    ZPD      NORM                                         ZPD
    I need that the proposed ItCat is ZPDW, under the same conditions
    SaTy     ItCatGrp    Usage    HLevItCat        Proposed ItCat
    ZPD      NORM       ?                                 ZPDW
    For that I believe that I'll have to play along with the Usage.
    But how?
    What triggers an USAGE during sales order creation? Is it related to the entered material. In a NORM material, how can a usage be deducted?

    It is possible , either one of the item category u can make as proposed and another one as manual. So while creating sale order u need to change it manually

  • HowTo find item usage in existing reports

    Hello,
    I would like to cleanup an existing and grown universe. I went to hiding the fields/Items I'm planning to remove.
    Furthermore I would like to check, whether these "deprecated" fields/items are still being used in any report, before removing them from the universe. Thus, avoiding broken reports.
    Is there any way to check reports for the usage of a certain universe field/item. I mean another way than to open each report and check the universe query.

    there are a couple of ways to go about finding out about objects.  One way would be through the SDK, however, a certain level of expertise in writing VBA code is required (you can read more on this from the following link: http://devlibrary.businessobjects.com/BusinessObjectsXIR2/en/devsuite.htm).
    Another way to find out about objects is possilbe through Auditor.  If you have Auditor installed and have turned on certain auditing events on your services then using the data accumulated in Auditor may also be another avenue for finding out about stuff.

  • Usage in Item category determination

    Hi friends,
    In delivery item category determination there will be in field called "Usage" . Delivery type will be coming from delivery document type, Item category group will be coming from material master. In the same way where from this Usage data will be coming. How come the system knows which is FREE, CHSP, Etc??
    Can anyone explain me in detail please.

    Item usage controls how the item category should behave during a document processing. Item usage controls the usage of the item. Item usage tells wheather it is a text item , free item , product selection item etc
    We can maintain Item usage feild  at CMIR also

    i've actually been thinking about this issue since i started posting.  yes, you can find item usage in customer-material info.  but where is item usage assigned so that this is relevant in item category determination (as in:  sales doc type + item category group + item usage + higher level item category = item category)? 
    how does the system, for example, know that usage is blank (for normal processing) or 'FREE' for free goods?  is the item usage in the condition records created?
    where does the system find the indicator (item usage CHSP) when batches are involved?
    although there have been many helpful threads, including the 'where used' list, a definitive answer would be very much welcome.

    Hi John,
    Assign Item Categories
    In this menu option, you can specify which item categories the system proposes during document processing for each sales document type and item category group. At the same time, you can specify additional item categories with which the system default can be overwritten. There is a maximum of three possible alternative item categories.
    If, for example, you enter a material with the item category group NORM in a standard order, the SAP System determines the allowed item category via the assignment of item categories to sales document types and item category groups.
    The system default and the allowed alternatives are always determined from the sales document type and one or two further criteria. The system default depends on the following criteria:
    sales document type
    item category group
    item category of the higher-level item
    item category usage
    Note
    The SAP System automatically copies the item category determined for a sales document item to the delivery.
    Recommendation
    Depending on the initial situation you can start the assignment differently:
    When you define a new sales document type, you should specify the proposed and the allowed item categories for the materials that are represented by the item category group.
    When you define a new item category, you should specify for which sales document types an item category is proposed or which item category is possible for the materials represented by the item category group.
    When you define a new item category group, you are to enhance the assignment of item categories to sales document types by this new item category group.
    Actions
    To define item category determination, proceed, for example, as follows:
    1. Choose the sales document type to which you want to assign item categories.
    2. Then choose one of the item category groups.
    3. Specify all the allowed item categories for the combination of sales document type and item category group.
    If you are dealing with a non-material item, you must specify the corresponding item usage.
    If it is a subitem, specify the item category of the higher-level item.
    If it is an item category that is to be proposed in the sales document, you must indicate the combination of item category, item category group and sales document type as a default value.
    4. If necessary, specify between one and a maximum of three item categories, with which the system default can be manually overwritten during document processing.

    We come across the field Item usage in Customer material Info Record (VD51).
    After entering the information of our material with the customers information, select the line entry and click on details.
    We will come across the field item usage at the bottom of the screen. When once you change this the item category determination gets changed.
    If you want to create your own item usage, the path is as follows:
    SPRO - IMG - Sales and Distribution - Sales - Sales Documents - Sales Document Item - Define Item category Usage.
