ITunes 6.02 Released!

http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Says it includes Stability and Performance improvements over 6.01. Might help some people having issues.
New features:
MiniStore - Discover new music as you enjoy your collection or import new CDs with MiniStore — right from your iTunes library. Yes, it can be hidden
Sync Home Movies - Create iPod-compatible versions of your own movies using iTunes. I assume this means that QT can properly encode from MPEG and AVIs now, finally
AirTunes Enhancement - Simultaneously stream the same song wirelessly to up to three home stereos or powered speakers — using AirPort Express with AirTunes. For those of you with lots of AE boxes, I suppose

Katrina:
iTunes is a front end for QuickTime. It provides the database functions to manage the library (and makes it purdy).
QuickTime is what is actually playing the music files. It is a needed component of the iTunes experience.
Breaking the two apart might make sense to one who is looking at a problem from this side of it, but if the standard instructions read "go to this link, download this component, install it. Then go to this other link, download the application there and install it", the average Joe would become confused, the experience would be less than seamless for the majority, and more people would walk away.
Think I'm exagerating? Take a look at how hard it is to get some folks to update the software on their iPods. The conversation usually goes like this:
"You need to update the software on your iPod"
"But I already have the latest version"
"OK, what is it?"
"6.0.2"
"No, that's iTunes. You need to get the latest iPod updater"
"Oh, OK...where's that?"
"Go to this link, download the software, install it, then run it"
"OK, so I downloaded it and then ran it, but nothing happened"
"You installed it. But you didn't run it. Did it ask you to attach an iPod?"
"No."
"OK, so now that it is installed, go to the start menu, find the iPod folder on it, then run the installer"
No, really, this conversation happens on a regular basis
Making everyone hustle around like that just to get iTunes running (when the majority don't have an issue right now) would just cause more frustration and could actually cost Apple customers.
I hope looking at it this way helps clarify things a bit for you!

  • Update to iTunes 7.7 Release - Now I have a problem.

I am curious if anyone is having this problem.
I updated to iTunes 7.7 release today on my development system (a mistake as I have been chasing this now all evening). The problem I am having is that when I build my app for the device the app installs on the iphone.. but now it takes nearly 3 minutes to do it compared to the 30-45 seconds before.
I have rebooted my Mac Pro and restarted the iphone. I can conly conclude that either it is iTunes or perhaps something that was caused by the installation of AIM or something like that on the phone (seems unlikely).
I just don't know what to do to fix it. I am not excited about resetting the phone and going through the **** it was to get provisioning to work again.
I'd appreciated any thoughts or like experiences.

I was trying to figure this out today. I just installed the final 2.0 software and wiped out all the applications I have previously installed.
Now installations of my apps were the usual speed. I then installed the Facebook and light applications and everything was still fine. Then I installed Super Monkey Ball.... BOOM!! The installation speed dropped to a few minutes. I then removed it and the speed went back up.
At this point I don't know if there is something wrong with SMB or if it's just faster when you have hardly any content installed.
Give it a try and post your findings.

  • ITunes does not release windows drive allocation

I have just installed iTunes version 10.7.0.21 after which I did a restore of my iPod Shuffle 4 (software version 1.0.1). After the restore iTunes no longer releases the Windows drive letter allocation. As a consequence of this the Shuffle’s light continuously blinks amber indicating the device is being accessed. Therefore it is not possible to determine when the battery has been fully recharged. Prior to doing this update iTunes would release the drive letter allocation after the sync was complete so that the light was either steady amber of green after charging was complete.
Is there some setting that I have messed up or is this a defect in the software?

I've seen other post about this issue. Im not sure of any one fix but I can offer afew steps to try and fix it.
Scan the system with your antivirus program. Next Scan for malware ( A general term for adware and spyware ) with your perssonal malware scanner or Ewido http://www.ewido.com Id also recommend scanning with windows chkdisk. TO access this in Windows XP goto "My Computer, rightclick the drive windows is on (Usually C Drive) hit properties>Tools tab. Under "Error Checking" hit check now. on the pop up check "Auto fix system file errors" and hit OK. You will get another pop up just hit "yEs" and restart the PC to start it.
Try going here http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen and enter your tag or PC modle and download all updates they offer, especailly patches revolving around iTUnes, BIOs and things
You can also try uninstalling iTUnes AND quicktime by going to control panel>add and remove. Uninstalling WILL NOT loose any music or playlist. After your done disable antivirus and security programs, goto apple.com and download/install iTUnes again

  • ITunes 10.6 released, lists Match improvements

    What's new in iTunes 10.6
iTunes 10.6 adds the ability to play 1080p HD movies and TV shows from the iTunes Store.
This release also includes many improvements for iTunes Match, including:
    • Improved song matching
    • Improved album artwork handling, downloading, and display
    • Addresses an issue where songs may skip when playing from iCloud
For information on the security content of this update, please visit: support.apple.com/kb/HT1222
Improved matching is a good thing assuming it actually works, I'm wondering if it will rescan anything automatically or if we'll have to manually have it match again.  And if it's the latter, what's the best way to get it to do that?  I know I can delete from iCloud on a secondary machine, but does that remove the songs from all playlists?

    KeithJenner wrote:
Does anyone know how much of Sgt Pepper matched previously? Roebeet previously reported 3 tracks from Magical Mytery Tour matched, but I haven't done them myself.
Here are my results for the Beatles Sgt. Pepper's and Magical Mystery Tour 2009 Mono Remastered albums prior and after the iTunes 10.6 update (IOW, no change)...
I tried deleting all of the songs on both albums (without deleting them from iCloud) and downloaded them again...and everything remained the same.  However that may be because all of my Beatles albums were ripped at 320kbps, so other's results may vary.
BTW, I have both the 2009 Mono and Stereo Remastered versions of these albums.  100% of the stereo versions were matched (not uploaded) prior to iTunes 10.6.
IIRC one of the odd "unmatched" tracks others reported right after iTunes Match went live was the Beatles Abby Road "She Came In Through the Bathroom Window".  I never experienced that bug however.
I have noticed that since the iTunes 10.6 and iOS 5.1 updates, cover art that would sometimes go missing on my iPhone 4 and/or iPad (or even my Apple TV2) now seem to show up without fail...including cover art that I had added myself.
    Hope that helps!

  • 5 minutes to import a song starting with mid iTunes 7.x releases

Sometime around iTunes 7.5 or 7.6, my imports began to be excruiciatingly slow. iTunes simply stopped responding, as if it were frozen. These freeze periods typically last about 3 minutes. During these periods, CPU usage is between 75 and 100%, and RAM for the iTunes process runs at about 250 MB. When iTunes is responding normally CPU usage is low and RAM usage about 125 MB. I am running the latest version of iTunes --- 8.0.1.11.
I have no problems burning CDs, only importing them and doing some other routine file maintenancem, which I will describe later.
When importing to Windows Media Library, there is no degradation in performance. Imports are quick and run at about a 30x rate with no pauses between tracks. With iTunes, I click import and there is a 2-3 minute delay, the import to the first song starts, the drive starts spinning slowly, maybe gets up to 2x then stalls again at the end of the track. Again, another 2-3 minute wait period before the drive becomes active again. When iTunes is frozen, I cannot even minimize the application.
Some other information that may or may not be helpful:
---I have a very large library...about 41,000 items (190GB). However, when this problem started the library was still very large...about 35,000 items (160GB).
---Occassionally I have found bizarre "workarounds". In the last release of iTunes (8.0) for example, I accidentally found if I right clicked on the iTunes store link in the left pane during an import, it would generate some sort of interupt and the import would start to fly with no pauses between tracks. Sadly, this weird little glitch is now gone in 8.0.1.
---There are other performance problems that crop up when editing song info in the list (by the way, I only use list mode). Renaming songs can generate up to a 1 minute freeze-up. Deleting songs can generate an even longer freeze-up of about 2 minutes. If I open the songs in "GET INFO" mode though and advance forward and backward through the list, I can work around the file maintenance issues (though not the deleting issue).
---I have verified my registry filter settings are as Apple recommends.
---I have disabled the Bonjour service, to no avail.
---Since this happened long ago, I cannot be sure, but it's possible the problems started occuring when I installed the Samsung SH-S203N drives. Possibly some compatibility problem with the SATA controller and iTunes? The drive that originally came with the computer had no such problems....but that was running an early version of iTunes 7. So I'm not really sure if this is an iTunes or a Samsung related problem. But again...the problems are NOT limited to importing CDs only.
That's all I have. Any help would be appreciated. As a music management tool, I think iTunes is the best, but I'm at the end of my rope with these performance problems.

I hate to say that I have a worse situation than you do! I've got iTunes 8.0.1.11 on Windows XP Service Pack 3. It's fine as a playback station, but it freezes the computer when trying to import from CDs. It does this even when it's the only application running after a fresh reboot.
So to get music into iTunes on this desktop machine, I must first import on my MacBook Pro at home, then transfer to a memory stick and import folders from the memory stick. This actually takes less time than ripping with Windows Media Player, typing in identifying text for each track, and waiting for iTunes to convert the Windows audio files to AIFF or whatever.
Also, iTunes on Windows has no provision to allow a user to insert the accent marks in foreign languages. It's easy on the Mac, impossible in Windows. Why?
    Why? Why?
I suspect there are device driver problems Apple doesn't want to invest in solving. iTunes will PLAY CDs on my drive. It just won't import them.

  • ITunes search: Recently released TV show episodes

Is there a way to search, or power search, for TV shows with episodes released in the last 30 days?
( I really, REALLY don't want to see episodes from 1-30 YEARS AGO ! )
Why are iTunes search criteria so limited?

Does anyone know how to show TV Shows released in the last 30 days?

  • When will iTunes 11 be released?

I have been waiting since the announcement and they stated it will be released in late October now its 23rd Oct and still no release. Does anyone know when it will actually be intially released?

I was just getting ready to start a discussion on this same subject. Perhaps they were waiting until after Windows 8 launched which was officially October 26th (which I am not thrilled with 8 at all). Maybe 8 is good for their own tablet but for a notebook, they seem to be trying to emulate apple by calling their programs "apps" and it is like hide and seek trying to find anything... not to mention outdated drivers...
Anyway, I hope they keep the "October" date of which is only 4 more days.
Or, since some of the flubs of IOS 6 it may be delayed   I hope for the release but the silence is not a good sign.

  • What's up with "iTunes 25 New Releases" RSS feed?

For the last several days, it's been pushing a large number of songs, many repeats, and certainly not all new releases. Not a big deal, just annoying.

Yea, I get that but they only have like three sections. New and Newsworthy, and two others they change right now they are Mardi Gras and Old Friends. They used to list like a hundred or more essential albums. I remember seeing stuff like Black Metal Essentials and 60's Protest Essentials. Did they remove many of those albums?

  • ITunes 11.2 release preview UI corrections & coverflow

The default load sacrafices a bit of realestate in the left scroll to stay in the tradition of the OS UI. This also gives everyone all the sorts and coverflow as an option (in views)
Here is the albums view with the sort as (album by artist). This would also be able to be left as grid as default. In this view the second scroll seems useful. Same page for Genere, Artist, Match ???

Do you mean 11.0.2? We haven't had 11.1 yet.
How far off is 11.2? (In Mayan years, without leap-year months.)

  • Is there a way to see what apple are fixing in next  release of itunes

the problem of defaulting to album view after ripping a cd.
always going back to the first song not where you were last.
the constatnt resizing of the window that chops off the status bar.
and the way  they've messed up  the search. i used it to limit it songs to one artist. but when you do  that it goes to artists view and doesn't stay in the previous view you had. if i am in song view and i use search to limit my songs i do not want to jump to artist album view, i want to stay in song view. it's ridiculous. i don't like it when software thinks it knows what i want to do.
people said don't whine on here, so how do  we find out what  dev are actively looking to fix vs what  they don't care about??
i'm giving itunes one more release, but if there is no improvement i'm switciing to another player. i'm already demoing 3 other ones right now.
the navigation issues make it is simply unusable as a media center for me now.

No, Apple very rarely make advance announcements of bug fixes.
You can restore much of the look & feel of the previous version with these shortcuts:
Ctrl-B to turn on the menu bar.
Ctrl-S to turn on the sidebar.
Ctrl-/ to turn on the status bar.
Click the magnifying glass top right and untick Search Entire Library for the old search behavior.
Alternatively you roll back to iTunes 10.7. If so, first download a copy of the 32 bit installer or 64 bit installer as appropriate, uninstall iTunes and supporting software, i.e. Apple Application Support & Apple Mobile Device Support. Reboot. Restore the pre-upgrade version of your library database as per the diagram below, then install iTunes 10.7.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to scan the media folder and catch up with any changes made since the backup file was created.
You might also want to use iTunes Feedback.

  • ITunes Directory and Podcast Release

    Hey Everyone,
Late Night Library has been releasing podcasts through iTunes for 3 years, but two months ago our newest podcasts stopped appearing in our iTunes directory, and this past week, iTunes didn't release our latest showso subscribers at all! We loaded one of these shows 72 hours ago.
I checked to make sure the feed was still valid, and Sitcher had no problem reading the feed whatsoever. The only other piece of information that might be useful is that we switched host services. That said, we switched hosts back in February and didn't receive any problems whatsoever until our shows stopped appearing the directory in May.
    Please help, friends!

  • I recently upgraded iTunes to 11.1.4.62 and then itunes would no longer recognize my iphone 4s and iPod

I recently upgraded iTunes to 11.1.4.62 and then itunes would no longer recognize my iphone 4s and iPod although I can see the iphone but NOT the iPod on the computer (windows 8.1 Pro).  I checked everything , cable, services, stop and start and automatice, etc.and went through all the steps on the apple support site, to include removing all apple software in the designated order and reinstalling it.  iTunes still doesn't see the iphone.
The Apple iPhone shows up only under protable Devices in the Device Manager window and has a Yellow ! warning triangle, and there is no Apple USB controller in the devices menu.under Universal Serial Bus Controllers. When I look under the properties of the Apple iphone, it says in Device Status, to reinstall the drivers for this device (Code 18).
When I do this,  I get the following: "Windows found driver softweare for you device but encountered an error when attempting to install it" Apple Mobile Device Driver One of the installers for th this device cannot perform the installation at this time. I tried both suggested locations on the C: drive.
Also I can't seem to find out how to install the Apple USB Contoller or is that related to the problem above?
The iphone and my ipod work fine with this version of itunes on Windows 7 on my laptop.  is it possible that I am missing a critical update from Microsoft on the driver and USB controller?  I have been leery of installing them since my computer had problems with some updates in January.
I 've tried every thing listed in this forum, I think, and the Apple support page on this subject.  Please help!

Version 11.1.5.5 of iTunes was just released today. If you update to that, does that help with the recognition troubles?
