ITunes causing hard disk to be unrecognized

Well,
I've traced a problem down to the iTunes software for Windows. I installed iTunes 5.01 on my WinXP Pro PC. Everything was working fine until after leaving my computer for a while and coming back I experienced an annoying problem.
When opening "My Computer" from the start menu I would get a gray screen and my mouse had the "busy" cursor as if Windows could not find my drives. Finally I reinstalled Windows XP and SP2 and installed iTunes 5.01 again (with no other software installed)
I leave my PC and come back - same problem.
I reinstall Windows a third time and don't install iTunes or iPOD updater. My PC has had ZERO occurences of the problem described above.
Am I doomed to sync my music with my Powerbook - I don't want my Music library on my Powerbook.

Yes, you should be able to install and SSD drive in place of the SATA inbuilt HDD.
You should be able to find compatible HDD's in the Service and maintnence guide for your notebook on hp.com website.

I went to put some songs that I already have on my ipod onto one of the kid's ipods and noticed that they've disappeared from ITunes. I checked the difference between my ipod and the ITunes list and 400 have disappeared from ITunes. When I checked the hard disk they're all still there but not appearing on ITunes. Is there an easy and quick way to bring them back or import them as a block rather than importing each song individually?

If the tracks are in your iTunes Music folder, you can use File add folder to library to add your iTunes Music folder - this should not create duplicates of tracks already in there library.
If they are in some other folder then add that folder/ those folders.

Can't transfer from iPod to iTunes after Hard Disk re-format

Hi. I have an iPod classic and iTunes. Recently, I had to re-format my hard drive after a system crash. I thought I had my audio files backed up to an external hard drive, but it turns out they didn't copy. So, I'm trying to restore the audio files from my iPod. I've tried disabling auto-sync and using "File, Transfer Purchases..." but the audio files are not copying. Can I get some help? Thanks to everyone. -J-

There are several ways you can pull the music off your iPod and onto iTunes. The first link below provides step-by-step instructions for the direct method if you have a PC as well as a few third party applications (for both the Mac and PC) if you choose to go that route instead. You can also do a simple Google search for "copy music from iPod to computer" and you should receive a number of sites that can help you out.
Just make sure that when you have your iPod plugged into your computer, that you don't hit "Erase and Sync" before completing the task of copying your music over.
Also, if you have any purchased music, you will probably have to re-authorize your computer by heading to the Store drop down menu and choosing "Authorize computer."

How to reestablish iTunes following Hard Disk failure and upgrade to 10.5.6

My Intel iMac Hard Drive, running Tiger, died recently. Before burial, I was able to back-up user account and user/main libraries.
New drive installed running 10.5.6 and yet to Launch iTunes. I've copied back the user/Music/iTunes folder, but what other files/folders do I need to copy back to the new drive from the back-up, bearing in mind I also have an iPhone linked in to iTunes?
The ones I can see and think I maybe should are as follows;
user/library/itunes
user/library/preferences/com.apple.iTunes.eq.plist
user/library/preferences/com.apple.iTunes.plist
user/library/preferences/com.apple.iTunesHelper.plist
Can anyone confirm either way and maybe list any I haven't spotted??

The first folder you mentioned is any scripts, plug-ins, etc you may have added to iTunes' functionality. If you didn't have any, then this set will be created using defaults when you start iTunes.
Is iTunes on your new drive the same as on the old one? If so, it should use the same 3 preference files, but then, you are changing OS too. What I should do is, create a user account on the new drive that is only a temporary one, not your main user account. Launch iTunes there, maybe add one CD track to the Library, then Quit. Now go to ~user/Library/Preferences for this account and check that the same three .plist files have been set up. (I'm pretty sure they should be, as the same version of iTunes runs on both Tiger and Leopard).
All being well, add the backed up .plist files to your main user account. (These are settings and Preferences, as you probably know). Then you should be good to go.
(I'm sure the extra user account , "Tiger" vs "Leopard", check, is unnecessarily cautious, but as I don't run Leopard, I'm just erring on the side of...)

iTunes doesn't have any automatic way of re-creating your directory structure in terms of folders and playlists in iTunes. You will have to drag each music folder to a playlist and then arrange these in folders inside of iTunes (which I warn you can can slow down iTunes a lot). I guess the once chance of speeding this up will be if somebody has written an Applescript to do it, but I don't remeber seeing any anywhere.

Error message: iTunes can't save to hard disk because disk not attached. (but it is) Does this indicate a real problem?

iTunes regularly post an error message saying it can't save to the internal hard disk because the disk is not attached, even though the disk seems to be functioning normally. Do these error messages indicate that there is a real problem with either iTunes or the disk?

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.

5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.

If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

ITunes - Factory Settings and Songs to be added in FOLDER WAY as on hard disk

Good Day everyone,
I am new to iTunes and Mac.
I have added tracks to my ITunes but they are messed up.
Firstly, please guide me how to bring my iTunes back to factory settings
and
Secondly, Please guide me how to add my song folders like the way I have sorted them on my hard disk. I do not want them to sorted the way iTunes sort, like by artists, genre etc
Please please help me, I am feeling very helpless on this issue.

To confirm, your existing mail client isn't communicating with your existing and remote mail services at Dreamhost? Which mail client are you using (Apple mail?), and how is mail on the client set up?
It would initially seem that your client is still referencing the server, either for its inbound or outbound mail. (And I'm not sure how unplugging the server helps here, unless there's some sort of a configuration issue, or a duplicate network address or such.) This would usually be something within the configuration of the mail client.
The Mac OS X Server is significantly easier than the many other servers and server operating systems I've dealt with over the years, but it requires reading the manuals and/or some knowledge of networking and of server environments.
Small shops and home folks without the time or inclination to "spin up" on these server areas can be well-served with some help initially configuring the server. Servers are different from clients. Stuff that you're implicitly used to using when you're running a client -- the DHCP server, for instance -- are what the servers provide you with.
As for Mac OS X Server and particularly if you head outside of the default settings and sequences and off into the customizations, which is what has happened here, you might want to engage some assistance. Not just for the direct and obvious initial set-up sequence, but also for getting you set-up and started with backups and other such tasks. Before you get too deep in here and get too much underway and too much saved on your disks, do seriously consider getting somebody in to help set this box up for you.
Mac OS X Server is not "no IT", but it is rather closer to "less IT" than most. Particularly once you get it configured and running.

ITunes showing Album Covers of external hard disk i/o internal hard disk

Greetings from Malaysia again. Searched through the Discussion Group, but couldn't find anything there. Thus, hope to get your assistance on this matter.
I have some music stored in the internal hard disk of my G4 iBook. However, recently I decided to have all my music stored in an EXTERNAL hard disk, ie in addition to what's in the iBook, to sync with my iPod. Both have the artwork or album covers. The issue is when I boot up ONLY the iBook, even without the external hard disk on, iTunes (Version 8.1) is showing the Artwork/Album Covers (and list of music) of the EXTERNAL hard disk instead of what's in the iBook. I've even tried the "Option key/Choose Library", but to no avail. I've even tried changing the location, after starting up iTunes in the Preference settings, but still the same story.
Is there any way to have iTunes reflect the correct Artwork/Album Covers (and list of music) when I have the external hard disk connected, as well as otherwise?

Moved the existing library. Created a new one, and moved all the songs to the new library. Subsequently, when using the "Option" key to select the library, it ended up as what I wanted, ie iTunes showing the album covers for the songs/album in the respective library - ie external hard disk, and internal in the notebook.

this is my first time at the forum and i dont find a better way to ask, i want to copy my itunes library to an external hard disk drive for have a back up, but when i try to copy it it appears this message "the item "itunes music" has 1 or more items that are in use and cannot be modified", i dont know why, then i search for help in apple support and this article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1751, but i do what it says and i still having my problem, i can't copy my music, that message keep's appearing and it dont let me copy my music.

How can I download all my iTunes music after wiping my hard disk without going into each of the 100 artists listed

Hi - I have recently had to wipe my hard disk which meant all my music has gone with it so I have an empty iTunes music library.
The only way I can see of doing it is
- going to the store
- selecting Purchased
- then I get a list of artists or albums down the left hand side
- have to select each individually and click Download All on the bottom left - for over 100+ its going to take forever ! Is there an easier way ?????

You can only sync your device to one iTunes library at a time. You can either copy the music from the library on your other computer to the one you have loaded the new CDs onto, or you can purchase an external CD Drive and load them to the iTunes library you are currently sync'd with:

For syncing, I am not familiar with the drag and drop method. I have always used the normal sync process:
iTunes 12 for Mac: Sync iPod, iPhone, or iPad
iTunes 12 for Windows: Sync iPod, iPhone, or iPad

That article is about using your iPod as an external hard drive, to move files from one computer to another computer. It is not related to your question.
You can't use iTunes to move song files from iPod to computer, except for songs you purchased from the iTunes Store (and you can also re-download purchases). However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can move song files from iPod to computer. If you do a Google search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.
Once the song files are on your current computer, add them to that computer's iTunes library by dragging the files (or folder containing the files) to the iTunes window. After confirming everything is there (and fixing the data issue you mentioned) you can sync the iPod. You may want to do a Restore on the iPod, if it might have a data corruption issue, which will erase the iPod's hard drive, re-install the latest software, and set it to defautl settings.

Try Resetting Your iPod while it's connected to the computer.
Hold down the Menu and Select buttons until you see the Apple logo (or Menu & Play/Pause in older models).
This will often get it recognized. It may take several attempts.

I have an iMac G5 that I recently upgraded to 10.4.10. I've had a 160 firewire lacie hard disk for over a year, and all of my iTunes content is stored and called from that device.
beginning today, I cannot add to my library, I am getting an error that says cannot read from or write to that lacie hard disk.
I've tried manually copying the files over via the Finder, and that is yielding an error (error code -36).
any thoughts? I've also had iChat problems since introducing 10.4.10, wonder if that's part of the problem.

Error -36 is an i/o error. This means that you almost certainly have a hardware problem. This might be with the FireWire cable; replace the cable. It might be with a FireWire port on the disk; put the cable into a different port. It might be with the FireWire port on the Mac; try a different port. It might be with the FireWire controller on the Mac; try a different Mac. It might be with the FireWire controller on the disk; put the disk into a different enclosure.
Unfortunately, what it's most likely to be is with the disk itself. I hope you have a backup.
