Itunes continually freezing forcing a hard reboot of pc

when syncing my itunes library with my ipod, itunes freezes fairly often and i can't quit out of it even if i try and kill the process in task manager. i think reformatting windows and starting over might help somewhat, but in the meantime, which is the lesser of two evils in terms of damage to my ipod: forcing a hard shut down of my machine with my ipod attached or disconnecting my ipod despite itunes still (sorta) running. when itunes freezes i can't even go to the 'saftely remove hardware' option in my taskbar, so i'm afraid to do anything that'll damage my ipod. any suggestions?

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

  • Itunes continually freezes - Running Windows 7 Ultimate

Can anyone assist - my iTunes continually freezes and I have to end the process and try again.  Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn't.
My PC is a Corei7, 12 GB ram running 64 Bit Windows 7 Ultimate
This is extremely frustrating - my prior PC's running both XP and Vista had similar issues

If you had similar problems on other PCs, it makes me wonder if you have software in common that does not play nice with iTunes.

  • Help. G Drive freezes while rendering, hard reboot only way out.

I have asked about this two prior times in forums.
When rendering in FCP X, the G-Drive loses communication with laptop. Freezes FCP X. Only way to unfreeze is hard reboot (pushing down power button). Convinced it was a dying G-Drive, I bought a new one, cloned the old one before running Disk Warrior. Same behavior on the new one,  so it cannot be the drive. It is a 1TB G-Drive 7200rpm, connected via firewire 800. Spent 2.5 hours on the phone with Apple support, nothing. I do not think they could even understand the issue, and I talked to 4 different people. One of them told me you should always have projects and events on your internal OS drive for editing, not attach any external drives (no, I am not kidding). They seemed to all think I was using Aperture for some reason, weird, since I never mentioned that program and do not even own it.
I am a pro here, and I am not doing anything I should not be. I have run disk warrior on all disks involved. I have repeated this process in different projects with multiple types of media, making me think that the media is not corrupted.  I have used disk utility several times, no errors or permission issues. I have trashed render files, preferences from the library, and re-installed FCP X.
I am now left to buying a new everything, but of course I cannot afford that
I read on G-Drive support page about these drives sometimes freezing up, but my issue does not relate to those.
I could really use a pro's pro or someone who has been down this road. I have been dealing with this since Tuesday, I dont have to tell you how far this has me behind.
    2009 MacBook Pro
Processor  2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    Software  OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)
    G-Drive 1TB 7200 rpm, firewire 800 connection
    G-Drive mini (the new one) 1TB 7200rpm firewire 800
editing AVCCAM 720p24fps,  AVCCAM 1080p60fps, 720p30fps (all from various projects)

That is the next step I suppose. I had to pay $99.00 for the support on the phone, extra care just expired. Trying one more time this morning with phone support.  Thanks Tom.
Still certain projects do not seem to have this issue. I also just installed the free trial of Pro Maintenance Tools, was not able to find any corrupt media.
It said from the crash reports that it may be the graphics card. The card in this computer is well suited for FCP X, but I suppose may be failing. I am under the impression you cannot upgrade this card on a MacBook Pro.

  • Freezing: Macbook won't wake up from freeze; takes 10 hard reboots to fix

I've been reading a lot about people having 'freezing' and 'wake up from sleep' issues with macbooks; apparently all of us are having this issue after upgrading to Leopard. Well, for me -
Everything is fine until my Macbook goes to sleep for a long period of time. It's usually after I wake up the next morning - I open the lid and just watch the beach ball spin for minutes on end. I do a hard reboot, but get a grey screen until the blinking "?" comes up on screen. I hard reboot again. I do this about five or six times on average to finally get the apple logo.
I was hoping this recent big apple update would have fixed my problems, but they're still here.
I'm running the first batch of intel core duo, 2GHZ. 1 GIG memory. I have apple care, but where I'm currently living I'd have to mail to to an apple store.

I don't have a solution for you, but am looking for one myself. I just bought a macbook (2.2 ghz, 2g ram, 120hd) yesterday and am experiencing the same issue. The machine won't wake after a long sleep no matter what I do. So far, I have only had to do a hard reboot once to get it back up, but still not something I care to deal with.
I called apple less than 24hours of my purchase and they said to come in to meet with a genius. I am going to have to ask for a replacement for sure. On the phone, they said that it didn't sound good the problem that I am having and that i could take out the battery. I definitely do not want a problem machine right out of the box.
Good luck and will post more after I go to the apple store on saturday.

  • Itunes keeps freezing and have to reboot

    HI All,
I hope someone can help me.
I recently moved all my music from my iMac over to an external HD as my computer was full. Everything in iTunes was working fine and the music and videos and everything is back on iTunes and playing from my external HD.
Problem is, now every time I open iTunes after about 25 minutes I get the spinning wheel and I have to go and "Force Quit" then I cant open it again and i have to reboot my iMac so I can get my iTunes open again...
I have tried downloading iTunes again to see if maybe installing it over the top of the current version might overwrite or fix the problem as read that it worked for someone else in another thread.
Any feedback, advice or support here people??
    I need my iTunes...
    Cheers

  • Why Does iTunes Continuously Read From the Hard-drive?

Hi. I have recently discovered an odd behaviour from iTunes: instead of reading an entire song from the harddrive and storing it in ram during playback, iTunes reads small chunks of data very frequently. For example, when playing a 128Kbps song the HD reads 68KB chunks approximately every 3 seconds, and when playing lossless WAVE files the HD is constantly reading at 200KB/s. I found this out by having iTunes open and playing music while having all other programs closed, and monitoring the disk activity from Activity Monitor (and I'm sure that it's iTunes that was reading from the HD because when the music was paused the HD was idle).
So, my question is why would iTunes do this? This seems like an extremely inefficient use of the harddrive for several reasons:
    - Constantly reading small chunks from the HD uses much more power than reading large chunks infrequently because idle hard-drives use much less power than active hard-drives
    - This will slow down other applications that need to make heavy use of the HD because iTunes will be constantly interrupting anything else that is using the disk (this is especially true for Photoshop or any other program that uses lots of swapfile space)
    - It puts unnecessary wear on the HD heads
    - It is dangerous for laptops, which can easily get thrown around or bumped. Momentarily reading a large chunk of data and leaving the HD idle for the majority of the time will be much safer for the HD heads
    - Hard-drive-based portable music players read large chunks of data infrequently because it is well-known that this saves power and protects the HD in these devices.
So... is there any reason that iTunes is exempt from these reasons??
    -Eric

I too have wondered about this. You'd think with 1.5GB RAM that itunes would take 3MB of it and leave my drive alone for a few minutes. I don't really feel comfortable doing drive intensive activities such as file copying while itunes is running.

  • Mac OS X hanging randomly (namely freezing, needing a hard reset)

    Hi,
I'll present my problem as straightforward as possible: ever since August 2nd (when I installed a number of updates, including Airport Extreme Update 2007-004 and Security Update 2007-007 Intel), my machine started to freeze needing a hard reboot quite often.
It's not that my Intel MacBook Pro (one of the first ones) hasn't ever frozen as opposed to the PowerBook that worked smoothly no matter what happened, but I started to get concerned about it, especially when everything started to happen after the one before the last update.
Usually the freezing happens when I'm plugging in USB headphones or playing a DVD or using my TV receiver with the laptop.
In /var/log/system.log I notice quite a lot of:
kernel[0]: AppleYukon: 00000000,00000000 skqueue - SkEventDispatcher - ignoring event queue, hardware is not responding
...which I find it's related to the ethernet card (which goes Inactive extremely often, needing a reboot to be activated again)
    and:
    AppleYukon: 00000000,0000ffff skxmac2 - ReadPhy - phy read error
...which I have no idea what it is.
I'm also considering a hardware failure, and am trying to convince myself to go to the Apple Store and try to explain the situation, but thought that I'd better ask here first in case anybody else had the same problem and found a solution or at least an explanation.
Do let me know if you need any further information.
    Cheers,
    Gabriel

I've been having a similar problem with the same timeframe. Since applying the August 2nd update (including the Airport Extreme Update 2007-004), my MacBook Pro will not recover after entering sleep mode. I'm consistently forced to hard reboot it after it goes into standby mode. No amount of mouse clicking, trackpad tapping, button pushing, keyboard banging, etc. will convince it to resume from standby.
If anyone has any suggestions for where I could possibly look for some error log information, etc. (I'm a recent convert from Windoze to OS X), I'd be very appreciative.

  • ITunes locks up and forces hard reboot while playing video

I am running iTunes 8.2.1 on an iMac G5 running Leopard 10.5.7. About 80% of the time I watch video through iTunes, regardless of whether or not the video came from the iTunes store or elsewhere, the computer locks up after a few minutes of playback and I must do a hard reboot. The mouse still is responsive, but clicks are not registered and no keystrokes cause any response. When played through Quicktime or other video playback applications, these lockups do not happen.
Has anybody else experienced this problem? What can I do about it?

    Ronald hello,
Shut down and restart your computer with the Command key and the letter 's' depressed.
At the prompt type or copy and paste (don't forget the space)
    /sbin/fsck -fy
hit return key and wait for all clear to be displayed then type.
    reboot
    hit return key
Check the pemissions are set correct on the Apple installed software...
use 'Disk Utility' from Applications > Utilities > select HD... select 1st aid. repair permissions... if repairs are needed run again until none are repaired... do not worry about messages 'we are using special permissions etc... they are OK Quit when finished.
Use BatChmod to set correct permissions on your home ~ Music folder
This compact GUI will perform the same tasks as a 'terminal command line'
drag the complete Music folder with libraries and iTunes Music folder inside to the BatChmod Icon and drop....
check path is correct.... tick if not already.... Owner=R W X, Group=R, Others=R,
then tick 'Apply ownership and privileges' tick 'Unlock" ... click Apply...
provide password... all done very quick...
come back and let me know how it all goes now ... TP

  • Itunes will not force quit and freezes often

I recently moved my itunes folder to an external hard drive. since then it has a had lots of troubles. I resolved some of the issues that were related to itunes 8 (deleted the genius.itdb file to avoid error 13026). However itunes is still regularly freezing when i play songs or add songs to the library. when i attempt to force quit itunes, it will disappear from the force quit menu but the dock still shows it as running, when I reopen the force quit menu it is still listed. i have to restart my computer to get it to quit so i can attempt to reopen it. is this a problem with the hard drive? or do i need to do something else?

Hold the power button down for 7 seconds or more.

  • My 16 GB iPhone 5 is stuck on a black screen. A white screen with the apple logo flashes occasionally. iTunes won't recognize the phone, and hard reboot failed. Can anyone help?

I just bought a gently used 16 GB iPhone 5. I set the phone up earlier today with no issues at all, installing backup data from my iPhone 4, syncing the new phone to my iCould, setting up my new SIM card, etc.
The phone was working fine (I was able to send and receive texts, use WiFi, manage apps, etc.) for the first hour or so. Then, without warning, it shut down. The screen is solid black, but every now and then it flashes white with the black apple logo.
I tried multiple hard reboots — all failed.
iTunes (on my MacBook Air, running Yosemite) is now unable to recognize the device, although it recognized it without issue earlier today.
I live overseas, so going to an Apple store is a bit inconvenient. If I can trouble shoot this at home (and in English), it would be really helpful.
Thank you in advance if you have any helpful tips or suggestions!
    Best,

DO NOT STICK A PAPER CLIP IN THE HOLE!
There are two holes.  One is a small one that has a microphone behind it.  A paper clip would probably ruin the microphone.  The other is a 1/8 inch hole where you plug in a headset.  A paper clip might short-circuit something.
First connect the iPad to its wall charger for at least half an hour to be sure it has enough juice to get started.
Then if the iPad does not wake up when either the Home or Sleep button is pressed, press and hold the Sleep button for several seconds and see if the Apple logo appears.  If it does, then your iPad has been turned off instead of merely being put to sleep.
Beyond that, look for an iPad repair center.  The Apple Authorized Repair Centers may be more expensive.  If you want to try them, look at <Apple Authorized Repair Centers>.  There may be one in your city.

  • Iphone stuck on 'plug into itunes' symbol - even after hard reboot

Deciding to update my iphone 3G with the most current version release, my computer 'blue screened' while putting the updates on the iphone. Now my computer does not recognise any operating system (not good!) and my iphone (even after hard reboot) does not get past the 'plug into itunes' symbol.
How do I fix my iphone? - I don't want to reset it to factory settings as my computer with everythihng on it (songs, movies, apps, contact, etc) no longer works!
Any ideas, other than going to the Genius Bar and hoping they can fix it?
    Thanks
    Jo

Place the device in DFU mode (google it) and restore.
    Error 20, 21, 23, 26, 28, 29, 34, 36, 37, 40
These errors typically occur when security software interferes with the restore and update process. Follow Troubleshooting security software issues to resolve this issue. In rare cases, these errors may be a hardware issue. If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.

  • Login Screen freezes after Lion 10.7.2 upgrade - needs 3 hard reboots

Just upgraded my 21.5" late 2009 iMac to OS X Lion 10.7.2.
    0. Power up from cold start: login screen appears, and mouse works, but clicking on users does not bring up the password box.  No option except for hard reboot.
    1. Hold down power button until it shuts down.  Power up, still no respponse (see 0.).
    2. Hold down power button until it shuts down.  Power up, still no respponse (see 0.).
    3. Hold down power button until it shuts down.  Power up, responds normally, can login (or start computing if login screen is bypassed).
I saw messages (mostly for MacBook Pros) dating back to July/August 2011 with similar problems.  But none for 10.7.2, and none where it consistently takes 3 hard reboots to get a response.  I tried all of the suggestions that applied: SMC reset, repair disk permissions, change password, bypass login screen. If I use automatic login, it boots up into my desktop and all the services seem to start.  The mouse works, but nothing responds when I click on it (see 0.).
    Any ideas?
    thanks,
    david

Thanks lynque.  It turns out I did need a keychain repair, but that didn't fix the problem.  I probably should have done this earlier, but I ended up unplugging all peripherals (2 firewire + 3 USB) then powered up without issue.
So I shut down, plugged in one at a time, and ran into the problem again after plugging in an external hard drive (WD My Book Essential).  I repaired with disk utility, but the problem remained.
I then rebuilt the partitions with Disk Warrior, and now everything seems to work....

  • Itunes continues to freeze when i am trying to import my music. I have rough 600gb of music and it continues to freeze on processing album artwork

When trying to import my music (about 600gb worth) itunes keeps freezing on processing artwork. Any ideas on how to maybe bypass the art work? or anything to keep this from happening.

I had the same a long time ago, and the reason why it happened to me was of 1 corrupt mp3 file.
I imported the files in batch (but maybe this will take to long with 600gb of music files) and then found the corrupt mp3 file, after I repaired it with Mp3val everything was alright again
