Itunes ignores tags on media files

How does iTunes 12 handle tagging? For some reason iTunes re-tagged all my song files before I upgraded to 12, seemingly reverting to the original tags, but leaving my amended tags in the actual media files. I ditched the .ils file, but again, when  iTunes rebuilt library it ignored the tags on the files. Any ideas?

Did you select tracks that iTunes does not play?
also says it is for iTunes 4.1 rather than v10
Actually it states, " iTunes 4.1 or better".
iTunes 10 is better (more recent) than iTunes 4.1 and it works fine.

  • Itunes not tagging to actual file (esp. genre)

I just went through all 23,000+ tracks of my music and Labeled them with a genre system to my liking. Most of the files stick, however just over 1,900 of them don't. By stick I mean they're not being written to the actual id3 tag of the file for some reason and don't show up in other media players. (selecting convert to id3 tag has not helped). Below is a screenshot showing what I mean...
The track highlighted in iTunes has Genre labeled as Punk Rock, and no Genre listed in windows. If I pull the file up in mediamonkey or another player, the Genre will be empty. Is there any way to make the tags stick to the file? Does anyone know why some of them aren't? I don't see any rhyme or reason to when it happens. I'm sure they all have something in common, but I don't know what.

If you embed artwork to all files in an album it takes up more drive space.  It may not sound like much but if it is high resolution artwork and you have thousands of files it could represent a few GBs of drive space.  iTunes keeps only a single copy of artwork per album but this is only in iTunes library, not the files.
So if you really do want to embed artwork:

  • Itunes, add and remove media files? Playlist and smart playlist

My problem is i have synced all my music into itunes and now i do not know how to delete them.
I only want media that i need in itunes. What i did was sync all my media files into itunes where this has created a mess for me.
I have duplicate media files, i downloaded a software to scan this and remove but that seemed to not work.
I have used  Consolidating option as well but doesn't seem to be working.
I have tried to organise itunes from genres, bpm rating etc. but they won't go in the playlist i assign them to.
I have create another itunes and started again but i am having problems using smart play list and playlist.
Is there a way to uninstall itunes, will all the media be copy onto my account?
Has i want to add the media as i go along putting them into different genres, groups etc?

Yes i do understand sorry just want to solve my problems. Hmmm maybe apple should get a live support going that would be handle for apple customer's.
I wrote this on another thread:
I came on this forum due to a apple assistant on the phone when i rang them for support about a few queries i had. I found that the apple representative to be quite rude with short answer questions and not giving me further resources for further understanding on my topics.
i hope in by be active on the apple community support forums, contribute to the community and others!

  • How do I make itunes look for my media files on the external hardrive

I've moved as far as I can tell all my music, videos etc. to an external drive but even though I've set itunes to look for it there in edit-preferences-advanced it still won't go there. In my list everything has the exclamation next to it and when I try to "get info" it says the original can't be found and I have to "find" it. I obviously can't do that for thousands of songs. I just updated the software on both my ipod and itunes and still nothing. I also reset my ipod and it still won't pick it up. My media files are under I:\My Music\iTunes Music\iTunes Music
    Any ideas?

As implied above, iTunes struggles if you move the content around by hand. Changing the location under Edit > Preferences > Advanced tells iTunes where to put new content, not where to look for the old stuff. That said, if you move the library files and the media at the same time, keeping the relative paths from the library to the media unchanged then iTunes usually manages to work everything out.
If you copied the iTunes folder over already, then the steps above should sort you out. If not it might be time to get your library sorted out propery.
The path you mention, I:\My Music\iTunes Music\iTunes Music, looks like it has one too many levels and is the older name for the media folder. Ideally you want your library files at the root of the drive, e.g. I:\iTunes and the media folder inside that at I:\iTunes\iTunes Media. Again, ideally, your folder structure should look like the one on the right in this detatil copied from one of my older posts:
If you have upgraded from version 8 (or earlier) to iTunes 9 (or later) at some point, then your media folder (everything inside the red outline) may still be called iTunes Music instead of iTunes Media. The extra Music folder inside the media folder is used if you have allowed iTunes to Upgrade to iTunes Media Organization (iTunes 9) or used File > Library > Organize Library > Reorganize files in the folder "<Media Folder>" (iTunes 10). Depending on your choices for Keep iTunes Media folder organized and Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library plus a little bug in which one build changed the name of the file storing the choice of layout it is quite easy for some of your files to be organized according to one layout and some the other.
If everything is set out like that then iTunes should be able to find things by itself, but if it needs a hand my script FindTracks should be able to relink any files that iTunes can't locate.

  • Why wont songs purchased from itunes transfer to my media files on pc?

why wont songs purchased on itunes transfer to music library on pc?

I'm a bit confused by your question.
You say you have synced with your iMac, and that you have match turned on. If match is turned on you can't sync music any more.
Are the purchases new, or old ones?
Can you confirm that match is turned on on both the iMac and the iPhone.

  • Editing Tags in itunes - does tag info stay with file?

I have a question about editing tags in itunes, hopefully I can explain myself clearly enough here...
I have a very large music collection...almost 10,000 files now, and have spent alot of time editing the tags, renaming mispelled artists and song names etc...my question is, when that tag is edited, will all that tag info remain intact when I copy the actual mp3's to another computer? I want to back all the music up to my laptop, which is running same version of itunes, but I don't want to have to start over again with editing the tags. When I initially put the files on my computer the tags were really messed.
    Thanks for any info.

Here is the last list I've had of attributes and were they reside:
For M4A and MP3 files... (WAV files do not have tags)
These are only in the iTunes Library files (ITL & XML):
    -- Playlists
    -- Ratings
    -- Play Count
    -- Last Played
    -- Date Added
    -- Date Modified
    -- Equalizer
    -- Volume Adjustment
These are stored in the music file itself:
    -- Artist
    -- Album
    -- Song Title
    -- Year
    -- Comments
    -- Compilation tag
    -- Lyrics
    -- Genre
    -- Grouping
-- Volume Adjustment (a special iTunes only tag in the file - non-standard)
    -- Composer
-- Bit Rate (not a tag - inherent to the file itself)
    -- BPM
-- Kind (not a tag - inherent to the file itself)
-- Album Art (only stored in the file - not copied to the iTunes Library ITL or XML files)

  • ITunes won't recognize media on external hard drive

    Hello Everyone....
So I have a 17" Macbook Pro, that was recently repaired under Future Shop's PSP that I purchased. They wiped it completely clean, so I essentially have a brand new computer again.
Luckily, I put almost all of my data and media onto my external hard drive before it went in. I have been operating with my iTunes media stored on an external drive for some time now with success.
Now that my computer is completely new, I did all the available updates, and then went to link my library to my iTunes, as it's "new again". It doesn't have my library attached anymore. I think I forgot to save the actual library files that I'm now reading about, and instead just saved the actual mp4 files. To be honest I didn't know there were library files and actual media files, seems weird...
I've changed my preferences back to the external drive folder where my media is located, and I've clicked "consolidate files" and nothing happens.
I've tried to hit the "scan for media" button that pops up when you have a wiped or new computer and nothing has happened.
I tried to physically click and drag everything from my external drive into my iTunes, and the little "processing xyz..." popped up with the blue and white striped progress bar, however when I woke up this morning nothing had happened. I'm not sure how that developed.
I can't seem to find anything on the internet to assist with this particular issue. I have all my media stored properly in the iTunes media folder but no actual "library" file. I guess I didn't realize they existed!
Any ideas? I am losing my mind. This mac is my second and has been in for repairs twice, and has given me nothing but problems. I am aware this "problem" is my own dumb fault but I feel like it should be much easier to recognize your existing media when it's right there in front of you.

Preferences does not scan for media, it only changes the storage location for new additions.  The files have to be added to the library.  It sounds like you tried this in one of your attempts but it did not work (I don't know why it didn't unless there is some detail I missed).
Where do you want your library?  On the external or internal?
If the internal, start iTunes.  Drag your media files to the "Automatically Add To iTunes folder.  iTunes 9: Understanding the "Automatically Add to iTunes" folder. - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3832  Or use the "Add" menu item to add files to iTunes, or drag them to the iTuens library in the sidepanel.
If somewhere else, start iTunes while holding down the option/alt key, select a library location.  Add as above.

  • ITunes not picking up on tags from AAC files ripped using Toast 9

I am trying to rip CD's into AAC files using Toast 9. When I import them into iTunes, they have next to no tags - only artist, album, and song title. I don't know if the problem is with iTunes or Toast 9 at this point. Is there a way I can see all the tags on a file outside of iTunes? Has anyone else had this problem? Of the discussion topic, but does anyone know how to make Toast 9 write the tags?

Good question. I feel that Toast provides a better rip, at least that's what my ears tell me. It's looking more and more like I'll have to use iTunes, despite haiving bought Toast 9 just for ripping. As a guy just switching from PC I'm getting kinda frustrated with a lack of options. I have to say, Easy Media Creator works a lot better and more intuitively than Toast.

    From your OLD computer...
Copy your ENTIRE iTunes FOLDER to an External Drive... and then from the External Drive to your New Computer..

  • ITunes won't copy music files to Media folder when songs are dragged

I am trying add songs from my external hard drive to my iTunes Library.
I have the following options checked:
    "Keep iTunes Media folder organized."
"Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library."
In the past, I could just drag files from my hard drive into the iTunes song list and add them to the library. iTunes would successfully make a copy of the file to the iTunes Media folder so that I could disconnect the hard drive and still play the songs.
Suddenly, this no longer works. iTunes won't make a copy of the file anymore. It won't even make a copy of files located on my desktop.
I found a workaround -- copy the files from my hard drive to the desktop. Then I have to go to File > Add to Library in order for it to work.
It's an extra step, but it was VERY annoying to have to figure out.
So my question -- Is this an iTunes bug or some kind of deliberate attempt at making it hard to use files not purchased through iTunes?
I noticed this on one of the Apple support pages (my emphasis):
Copying music to and keeping the iTunes Media folder organized
You can select these options on the Advanced pane of iTunes preferences:
"Keep iTunes Media folder organized." Learn more about how iTunes 9 and later organizes your media.
"Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library." Select this option to store all your media files in the iTunes Media folder. Since it's all in one location, you can easily transfer or back up your media. When you purchase or import media into iTunes from a CD, it's automatically added to your iTunes Media folder. If you add media to iTunes another way (choosing "Add to library" from the File menu or by dragging an MP3 file into iTunes), it might not be added to your iTunes Media folder.
    Well, why the heck not??

I have posted so many issues to APPLE on the staggering lack of  basic functionality with itunes and each time they keep deleting it.
Automatically Addd feature does not work consistently if the library is on NAS or a drive not on the same bok as the Mac, iMac or PC.
iTuns will hang if you have the finder window open  and the recently added playlist open
itunes will not add files automatically  if more than three phases of adding folders to the automatically add to itune folder is refreshed
Once could even jump to the conclusion that the software testing and Quality Control in the iTunes development team had missed out whole chunks of tsting OR that the test designers wrote such basic test scripts which did not replicate real world useage.

  • Time machine on external drive will not back up itunes media file on a separate external drive. Have already reformated itunes media drive, dragged itunes media backup file from time machine (old copy) and removed time machine plist and restarted.

Two external drives, one for time machine backups and a second (daisy chained firewire) for itunes media folder . Time machine fails to backup the media file saying could not be completed, with no error specified. Steps taken already include reformating drive with media, dragging older media backup file from time machine disc to media disc, and deleting time machine plist and starting time macine preferences upon startup. Media folder is approx 200 gb, mostly ripped dvd movies.
    Any help for this??

  • How can I move my media files from USB-HD to NAS without having to copy the media files to iTunes Media folder?

I have iTunes on a Mac with the iTunes Media folder stored locally and the music on an external USB-HD. The music files are Not copied to iTunes Media folder when added to the library.
Now I want to move my files from USB-HD to a NAS without losing any information or settings. I want to do the similar to my iPhoto library. I do not want to consolidate my files to iTunes Media folder. The articles I’ve read only discuss how to do if the files are copied to iTunes Media folder when added to the library. Any tips or trix?

I have iTunes on a Mac with the iTunes Media folder stored locally and the music on an external USB-HD. The music files are Not copied to iTunes Media folder when added to the library.
How are you achieving the above? What are your copy setting in preferences? If you are manually overriding the copy-to by holding down the option key while adding media then that won't apply when you import a playlist (as in importing the .xml).  When you import a playlist like that you are essentially adding the files to the library again and it will obey the  preferences setting since you can't option add them that way.
Correct on the .itl.  Only iTunes itself can edit that file.
I think you need to review your basic wants/needs in doing all this.  If your reason for not wanting to use the Media Folder settiing is because you do not want it to go on the internal drive, but you don't actually mind if it organizes it as long as it is on the NAS, change the Media Folder preferences setting to the NAS and let it consolidate to there.  If you want to move the stuff but keep it organized in your own folder structure you may need to do it as I suggested initially.  Once it is on the NAS and iTunes recognize the file locations you can do what you can only do if you manually manage music which is move it around in Finder afterward once it is on the drive and recognized to tweak location to your final wishes.

  • I have converted most of my windows media files to itunes. However I had to close it down about 3 quarters of the way through. It then processed the album art. How can I convert the files that it didn't finish doing the first time? thanks

    Hi there,
hope you can help me. I helped my sister convert her window media files to itunes and set up an account for her. Unfortunately her computer is really slow and it was really late and we had to turn it off. It processed some of the album art for the files that it had converted. However, some songs were not converted and because there was quite a few left, I don't really know which ones did not get converted as I selected  all of the folders. How do I find out which ones I have left to convert and put the rest of the songs onto itunes for her please? Or are they on the itunes still as they showed up initially on itunes in the list to be converted.
    Thank you!

You could convert them all again and then dedupe, or use a Windows search to reveal all the WMA files and then try to work out which still need to be converted. If you're lucky iTunes would have processed the imports in alphabetical path order so it would just be a matter of working out where it had got up to...

  • ITunes Consolidation: Will it create duplicates of media files if they already exist in the new itunes destination folder but arent being referenced by the itunes library?

I have a macbook pro from fall 2010. I have been using my external HD as my primary itunes folder for the past 7 yrs ( i.e it is organized by itunes default categorization, etc). However, there is some overlap between my external HD itunes folder and my comps original itunes folder (probably 20-30% of my current library's media files were already duplicated there from when i first bought the HD and transferred files to the external, however they are mostly referenced from the external now). Also there are files in the comp's itunes folder that are not on my external (probably due to organizational mishaps and podcast downloads when not connected to the external, etc). I do not know how many files this is the case for.
Recently, i decided that i wanted to consolidate all of my itunes music into one concise folder on my macbook's HD to avoid these issues going forward.  I also just bought a new external which i will use to back up my comp's itunes folder once i consolidate everything to the comp. But i plan on using the itunes folder on the comp going forward or at least using the consolidate fcn to avoid these issues.
Here is my dilemma. Prior to learning of the consolidate feature today, I changed the default itunes folder in settings to the original itunes folder on the macbook and then manually dragged all of the media files from my external itunes folder to the macbook's itunes folder. There were a ton of duplicates or overlapping folders with similar artist names, so i opted to have them merge all folders where possible. After doing this, i realized the itunes library still references these files that i dragged and dropped from the external since that is where my default itunes folder used to be. At that point i then read and learned of the consolidate itunes feature which seems like the best way to do this. But i am afraid that if i consolidate my library to my macbook's itunes folder now, will it create duplicates of the 4000 + media files i just dragged to the macbook's itunes folder which are already in the itunes library but being referenced from the old external??
Question: Is there a way that i can make these files i just dragged to the macbook's itunes folder become the ones referenced by the itunes library through the consolidate feature without creating duplicates of these 4000+ files? I want to avoid having  three copies of these files (two duplicates in the itunes and the originals on the external). Furthermore, is there a best way to find out which files in the macbook's itunes folder are not being included in the library after consolidating everything to the computer's HD? Then after that, what is the best way to start backing this all up to my new external, so that this overlapping issue doesnt happen again?  Im assuming i just need to make sure to consolidate first when changing itunes folders going forward. Thank you. I know that was a lot  to read but hopefully someone can help with this issue.

    In general:
    - The best way to check if files are in a library is to drag the whole media folder to the library.  If something was missed it will be added.  If it is in the library is won't be added a second time.
    - If you have a second copy of a file and iTunes does not currently list that specific file in its database then even if it is identical to one already in the database it will add it a second time.  So if you have file xyz on the internal drive and the external drive and add them to iTunes you will end up with two entries for the same thing in iTunes because you really do have to copies of the files.  While this can happen with two copies on a single drive, it will almost definitely be the case when you have a copy of a file on two drives because iTunes really sees them as two different things.
-Unless you know how iTunes works, avoid moving files yourself.  Let the consolidate feature do all the file moving.  Manually moving files can really mess up iTunes unless you know what you are doing and have iTunes set to not try to do it itself.
    - There's no clean and easy way to delete duplicates.  The best thing is to change practice so you don't create them.   Here are  references:

  • I have 60 000 songs on a hard drive. The songs are referenced to the media file and not stored in the media file. I have moved the songs to another external drive. The itunes library has lost the link to the media files. How can I restore the links?

I have all my songs (60 000) on a remote drive. The drive is wireless networked. I installed a new router and had to map the drive again. Once this was done itunes could no longer locate the music. My music is not sitting in my media file but is rather referenced to the location of the music. Now that the location has changed due to the remapped drive how can I link the itunes library to the songs (media)again.
I have read many help comments and forums but so far nothing specific about relinking once the songs have already been moved and are referenced songs.
A step by step procedure would be helpful.
    Thank you
    Graham

I've uploaded a newer version that might catch that error. For some background on the script look at this thread.
iTunes remembers the location of each file in the database. If you right-click on a missing file, click Get Info, cancel when it asks you to try to find it, then look on the summary tab it will show you the last known location in the form file://localhost/<some path>. If you put the files back where they are expected to be, close iTunes and reopen, then iTunes will find them again. If not my script can attempt the task. When the script asks for a media folder you should respond with Z:\ since that seems to be where the artist folders are located.
