Disable your firewall/security software and try again.

I had exact same problem and I have found a way to get round out!!!! Easy!
So the reason it doesn't allow it to play is for security to stop piracy etc.
Plug in the cable and VGA and aux cable and get everything set up so you are looking at the home screen.
1) select Videos
2) selected the film you want to watch
3) click the little play button
4) it will then come up with the message saying it can't play protected films blah blah blah
5) WITHOUT clicking ok double tap the home button to bring up the multitasking bar and swipe left to reveal the control panel
6) hold fast forward for a second or two and the movie with continue to play!
Stay in the multi tasking bar with the control panel, The message will stay there but don't worry. Kick back and enjoy your iPad movie on the big screen:)

Unfortunately, this sort of trouble has gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center on June 25. First we have to find a copy of the utility.
Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (The results from mydigitallife and Major Geeks are worth checking.)
After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any QuickTime entries and click "Remove".
Quit out of CleanUp. Restart the PC, and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time? -

After about 12% extraction, I am getting a "Can't open extraction file".
If you're not a developer then you really should not have upgraded.
I'm unsure how you can fix this as you have already done a back-up on iOS 7 and apple don't support firmware downgrades. -

I can't update itunes - I keep getting a error message after the download is done -any idea what I should do?
Several things to try.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the Sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut Off. To power up hold the Sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time (for about 10-15 seconds) until the Apple logo appears (ignore the red slider), then let go of the buttons.
Disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.

The new iTunes has a somewhat different look from the previous version. You can get the old look back if you prefer it by doing View > Show Sidebar in iTunes. Or you can adapt to the new look.

When I plug my iPhone 4s into my PC, I get a message that says iTunes needs a newer version of Apple Mobile Device Support. It wants me to uninstall both the AMDS and iTunes and then reinstall iTunes. iTunes won't recognize my phone and so I can't synch it. I suppose I should have prefaced my question with the concern that I've read a number of other posts from people who have had a similar issue and when they tried to follow the directions, they ran into a multitude of other problems. Not the iPad - your computer must be running iTunes 10.7 in order to sync. It has nothing to do with iTunes on the iPad.

I'm having trouble with importing them into iTunes and converting them at the same time. when i hold down option over the files i can't find where its supposed to say create new version. is this if you're in iTunes?
You can't do it in one step. Add to iTunes first, Once the tracks are in iTunes you may convert to a different format.

I have upgrade my windows 7 machine to the latest version of Itunes. When i connect my 5s (running iOS 8.1.2) i get the following error. "Itunes requires a newer version of Apple Mobile Device Support. Please uninstall both Apple Mobile Device Support and iTunes then install iTunes again"
My IPAD with the same iOS gets the same error.
I have uinstalled and reinstalled countless times. Rebooted both phone and PC. And still get the same error. If i try to install AMDS by itself or do a repair it always rolls back.
Any ideas?
Thank you.See the section Install missing components. Can you run the appropriate AppleMobileDeviceSupport msi?
If not, you could try logging the installation to see if you can spot any errors that you can correct. The following commands log the install of AMDS for edither 32 or 64 bit versions. They assume the .msi is at the root of drive C though you could edit accordingly. The option switch is slash el star vee for verbose logging.
msiexec /i C:\AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi /l*v C:\Log_AMDS.txt
msiexec /i C:\AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi /l*v C:\Log_AMDS64.txt
You can triple-click a line to select all of it, then press Ctrl+C to copy, switch to the command box and click the icon at the top left of the window to access the paste menu.
The log files might provide further clues as to what is going wrong. I suggest using Notepad++ to review the logs. Look for words like "failed" in the log.
