ITunes Sharing Mac/Windows

Is there a simple way to share my iTunes library from my Mac partition with my Windows 7 partition without having to copy the same music on both sides? I looked up an older thread, but the best option (required Command Prompt) said I did not have sufficient privileges change anything. I also changed the command, using my iTunes Music folder instead of iTunes Media (since for some reason I don't have the latter on my Mac).
cd "\users\[username]\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media"
mklink /d Music "e:\users\[username]\Music\iTunes\*iTunes Music*"

  • ITunes on Mac & Windows 7 (6 bit)

I can never get to have my iTunes correct.
I activated my iPhone 5 on my Macbook.. but all my music is on my Windows 7 (64 bit)
How I can make use of my iTunes with BOTH computers?.. On my Mac I usualy add videos, PDF documents and picttures to my iPhone 5... And I manually add music to my iPhone.

The way I solved this was to use the same iTunes library file on a shared Windows drive. That library contains everything I want to sync to the phone.
Since the actual paths on both systems are slightly different, the library file is rebuilt everytime you switch from one OS to the other, SO that usually only becomes a problem by not using the default Library location for the newer versions. Otherwise you may need to become handy with an XML editor from time to time. Or keep a good backup of your library file...

  • ITunes on Mac & Windows simultaneously

I am a long-time PC user and I have iTunes and my music library on my PC. I sync my iPod to it.
I just got a MacBook, and I would like to have my same music library accessible from iTunes on my Mac. (The Mac and the PC are on my wireless network). Ideally I would like to SHARE this, rather than copy all of the mp3 files or re-importing all of my CDs on to the Mac (which doesn't have much hard drive space).
Is this possible or am I handcuffed due to music sharing limitations?
Side note: Although it would be nice, I don't need to be able to sync my iPod to both computers. I can continue to sync to my Windows PC.

Although I've seen occasional reports of problems, by and large you should be able to use (but not sync as that's an automated process) your iPod on both your PC and your Mac. An iPod formatted for Mac won't run natively on a PC because the Windows OS does not support the HFS Plus file system and therefore will not see the drive but a Mac can read the Windows files system. You would need to remember however to only ever update your iPod on your Windows machine to maintain the formatting:

  • ITunes Sharing With Windows 7 Starter

I have 3 computers in my home. 2 run XP, 1 runs Windows 7 starter. All 3 have iTunes on them. I have sharing turned on for all of them. The 2 XP computers have no problem sharing a library. The 7 Starter netbook shows the library, but when I click on it to show the contents, it flashes on for a split second, then the shared library disappears from the menu. Any help would be appreciated.

Doublechecking bill ... what's the display resolution on the netbook? (In particular, is it at least 768 vertical?)
Checking because although iTunes will run on Starter, you might have some trouble changing preferences on a netbook with, say, a 600 vertical display, as per the following document:

  • NAS server with mp3s and Itunes for Mac & Windows. How to keep all running?

a)I have mp3s on the server (a NAS Hard Drive) when I run I-tunes even after selecting a a folder in the network hard drive tries to move the music on my local macbook under the i-tunes music folder location, this happens usually when I get I-tunes updates and re-installation. Is any way to stop I-Tunes to move files? I have no space in my Mac for all the mp3s.
    b) what is the best way to share the music files between two computers with I-Tunes, one being a Mac and the other a Windows? This, without screwing the files.

If you want cross-paltform comaptibility limit the fonts to OpenType or Windows TrueType formats, both of which work on both Mac and PC. To avoid missing font warnings the fonts must either be installed on each computer, or they must be in a folder named Document Fonts in the same location as the .indd file they are to work with. Packaging the file will build taht folder for you.
the rest of the stuff in your list won't help you. .idml would allow you to open on an older version, but does nothing for your situation. Embedding the links will keep you from having missing links, but so will packaging, and embedded links will make the file much larger and harder to work with.
For goodness sake, don't even think about outlining the text. It stops being text when you do that and you can no longer edit it.
And finally. do yourself a big favor and don't attempt to actually work on your file directly from the flash drive. Copy the whole package folder to the hard drive, work on it, then copy back. You don't want to know how many files are fatally damaged by write errors on flash drives.

  • Sharing Mac iTunes library with Windows PC (I want to be able to read/write)

Greetings from a new Mac user. I recently purchased a 27" iMAC running OS X 10.7.3. This iMac is now connected to my home network/workgroup.
    - I want to build a new iTunes Library on my 1TB internal Mac HD.
    - I want my 3 non Mac Machines (1 XP Prof and 2 Windows 7 Home) to be able to view the contents of my new (not yet built) iTunes Library resident on my iMac and of course be able to
    - play that content.
    - have play counts from my Windows-based be saved back to my iTunes Library.
    - be able to rate a song from any computer (Mac or Windows) within this iTunes Library and have that rating saved back to this iTunes Library.
I don't want to have to rely on iTunes "Shared Library" function. In other words I want all PCs to be able to read/write to the same iTunes Library file.
Before I purchased my iMac, my iTunes Library existed on one of my Windows-file system external drives. The pre-requisites for allowing multiple Windows PCs to access/share/write to the same iTunes Library was to:
    - share the Windows folder on the external drive in which the iTunes Library file was stored (allowing network users to be able to change the files), and
    - make sure all Windows-based PCs ran the same iTunes software version.
Assume: I don't want to change the version of Windows iTunes software from the currently installed 10.5.0 version.
Question 1: Can my Windows PCs access and utilize the same iTunes library file that I plan to build on my iMac hard drive?
Question 2: What older version of Mac iTunes software should I install on my iMac in order to allow the Windows PCs to access and use the iMacs iTunes library file?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hmmm...  thanks for the reply.  This of course, yields another question.  When you say 'you could format to FAT32 which both can use'; do you mean format the iTunes Hard drive on which my iTunes music now resides?  If so, this would mean I would need to copy the music off the internal iMac hard drive, then format the drive to FAT32, then copy the music back.
    Is this what you meant?

    Hi, Dave.
If you're using the BlackBerry browser, you can't configure anything to bypass the RIM servers.  I believe you may do so by using the Opera browser, but I haven't tried it myself so cannot comment with authority.
I hope that clears up the issue for you.

  • Itunes Shared Library between Mac and Windows isn't sharing videos properly

Hi, I'm a bit new to the mac world, but I'm the proud owner of a new macmini. I also own a Windows 7 machine.
My problem is with the Itunes Shared library. Itunes 10 on my mac is set up to share everything, including podcasts. I can see these from Itunes 10 on Windows, and I can play music (and audio podcasts), but video is hit or miss.
Videos downloaded from Itunes U tend to work, lectures and stuff.
Video podcasts (also downloaded from Itunes Store) and other videos don't work at all. Itunes just doesn't play the video, and doesn't even launch the "black screen". The timer remains at 0.00.
On the other hand, sharing videos from the PC to Mac works well, i.e. my mac can see the contents of the itunes shared library on Windows and play videos. It just doesn't work the other way around.
Thanks for reading and I hope this problem can be fixed.

    Woops!

  • How can I get my iTunes on my Windows machine and my Mac in Sync

I use both a Window's machine and a Mac. I first had my iPhone4 in sync with my iTunes on my Window's machine. Now I want to also have the iTunes on my Mac in sync with what is on my Window's machine, but when I plug in my iPhone none of the apps that are on my Window's machine are there.
And when I click sync apps on my Mac it warns that all the existing apps and their data will be replaced with apps from this iTunes library. How do I get them to be the same?

    Hi
did you try home sharing in iTunes? Turn it on on both machines and enter your Apple Account Information. This schould do the job.

  • Share iTunes libraries between Windows and MAC

Hi all i've an wifi via "Base AirPort" i've an HD shared between MAC and Windows sistem via the BASE, the iTunes library that i've stored in the HD is non redable for iTunes on Windows because it need an *.itl file...
How can i share an iTunes library between Windows and MAC???

I would like to report back that after struggling for months to get Tune Ranger to work that it is complete rubbish. The first time I tried to sync my libraries (between an empty iTunes library and my existing one) it created duplicates all over the place in my library and generally made a huge mess of everything. The support person (who I suspect is the only person over there) gave me some guff about my id3 tags being corrupt but it was clear that every song that appeared in a playlist was getting duped. Once I fixed this (many weeks later) I tried a one way sync after fiddling with the preferences of Tune Ranger to try to make it work, but it simply wouldn't.
I don't know if anyway has had success using TR where they are also trying to sync playlists, but if you have, I would certainly like to know what you settings are.

  • ITunes shared from OSX 10.6 to Windows 7 on Bootcamp?

Today I used bootcamp to setup Windows 7 Ultimate on my MBP 13 in' from May 2010.  It worked perfectly, installed all the drivers (even installed the patch for bootcamp for 3.1 to fix the headphones problem).  I only have one question; how do I share my iTunes library from my Mac partition with my blank iTunes on my windows 7 partition?  cheers!

If you’re thinking sharing the same library, meaning the playlists, album art, ratings, podcasts, apps etc.
it isn’t possible. This is because the iTunes Library file (that tells iTunes where everything is), is written in a Mac format, which the Windows iTunes cannot read, and vice versa.
However, I thought of a solution, but haven’t tried it. Seems logical to me:
    1. Install iTunes on your PC
    2. Go to the “Edit” menu, and click “Preferences"
    3. Go to the “Advanced” tab, and UNCHECK “Keep iTunes Media folder organized”, and “Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library. Click OK
    4. Get your iTunes media (from the Mac Partition), into the Windows iTunes. I’m not sure how exactly, but I suppose you can go to the (Mac) Username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music folder, and drag all the folders into Windows iTunes
    5. Enjoy your music, knowing that ratings/album art changes/podcasts/etc. will not carry over to Mac iTunes.
What I just wrote does is:
Lets Windows iTunes play your Mac iTunes files. However, Step 3 prevents Windows iTunes from duplicating your iTunes music into Windows, which would mean you have the same song on Mac and Windows. Meaning that Windows iTunes can read, but not change your media files
    What it WON’T do:
You shouldn’t sync your iPod on Windows as it would create a huge booboo (just disable syncing on Windows)
Maintain ratings of your Music - all your music will not have the “Mac” ratings, and rating it in Windows doesn’t change a thing on your Mac
Subscribing to Podcasts, buying apps, getting new music (from or not from iTunes store) will only download it to Windows, and not Mac.
You will have to re-authorize purchased content, as it is like a new computer
So use Windows iTunes ONLY to play files, while Mac iTunes to CHANGE your files (rate, buy subscribe, delete, etc)
This made total sense in my head but I think I complicated it out typing it. Write back if it doesn’t work (logically it should)

  • Can I use my Mac OS iTunes Library with Windows XP under Boot Camp?

Hello. I have a Mac Pro with two drives, a 1TB Mac OS 10.5 drive and a 500GB Windows XP drive. I have a large iTunes library on my Mac OS drive, and I'd like to be able to access it when I'm using XP. I downloaded MacDrive hoping that I'd be able to use the same iTunes library, but I'm stuck as to what to do now. Anyone know if this is possible, and how I can get it to work?

I have my entire iTunes library shared between Mac OS X 10.5.2 and XP (aka. Media Center 2005).
I use an HFS+ volume accessed via MacDrive. In my case I started off with the Windows iTunes as the master (and use it to rip all my CDs). I then set the Mac side running iTunes to use the same iTunes folder as specified in Windows (this is done in Advanced Preferences). I also replaced the Mac "iTunes Music Library.xml" and "iTunes Library" file (both stored in /Users/username/Music/iTunes) with aliases pointing to "C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\Music\iTunes\iTunes Music Library.xml" and "C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\Music\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl" respectively.
Note: I suspect the Mac side will need write access to these two files, and as I used FAT32 for the Windows volume the Mac does have write access. However there are now at least two ways for the Mac to get write access to NTFS volumes (MacFuse being one). It may also be possible to tell iTunes to store these files themselves in a common location (not tried that).
While it is not relevant to your query, I have also managed to share my entire iTunes library with Windows Media Player (and therefore also to Media Center 2005). All my music is in Apple Lossless format and I have a directshow filter for WMP to let it play Apple Lossless (or unprotected AAC). I also have a plugin installed to let WMP read the meta tags in MPEG4 (i.e. AAC and Apple Lossless) files.
When I switch from Windows to Mac and run iTunes it does a brief rebuild, when I switch from Mac to Windows it again does a brief rebuild and the result is that the list of music in iTunes on both operating systems is always the same and successfully accesses the same music files on the shared volume. I rebooted back in to Mac OS X at the weekend and was happily accessing the music in Front Row.

  • ITunes shared libraries not showing in Mac OS Lion (but OK in Win7!)

I have recently bought my first Mac and so far everything is great.  Except iTunes.
I'm still using iTunes on a Windows PC and I now have my iTunes Media all on a D-Link DNS-323 NAS.
I want to be able to listen to the same music (stored on the NAS) either on my PC, or my MacBook, or anywhere else in the home.  So I'm using the NAS iTunes Server.
iTunes on Windows can see and access the NAS iTunes server no problem, but the MacBook (Lion) cannot even see it.
I also tried sharing my both my libraries on Windows (where my main iTunes Music Library was made over the years - now referencing media stored on the NAS) and on my Mac (the library is empty even though I've told it all my media is on the mounted NAS!).  However, whilst Windows iTunes can see the (empty!!) Macbook iTunes library, the Mac again cannot see the Windows Shared Library.
So it seems my Macbook has a problem seeing shared libraries, regardless of whether they are on my Windows PC or the NAS drive.
Both the PC and the Macbook are running latest iTunes (10.6 on the Mac) and for the sake of testing, I have disabled ALL firewalls on the router (Huawei), Mac and Windows.  So there should be nothing blocking the IP traffic across my home network (which is very simple!).
    Any ideas on:
    1) How I can get iTunes 10.6 on Lion to see my DNS-323 iTunes server
    2) Or how I can get all my media in my Macbook's library without it fighting for control over my library with my PC
    many thanks

I have the same problem. REading some other threads, there is no obvious solution, other than perhaps that apple silently is suppressing Windows to enable more mac sales? I know, a bit rude to say, but that is the impression one gets if there is no simple/obvious solution despite the  "Mac just works" reputation. If am wrong, I apologize, please direct me to the thread or faq that gives the solution, thanks.

  • 10.6.7: Shared Macs appear as PCs in Finder, no shares in iTunes

    Hey,
so this is a weird problem I have:
My MacBook, updated to 10.6.7 just last week, shows all the other Macs on my network just as PCs (that means with a PC icon and a lowercase-only name). So there seems to be a problem with AFP, the PC-like-appearance of the other Macs (all of which have Windows sharing turned on) means that my MacBook is falling back to SMB for file sharing. Accessing these machines works, alas only via SMB (lowercase filenames all over the place...)
All the other Macs can "see" and access my MacBook via AFP however, so it just seems to be a problem with the incoming traffic, not the outgoing.
And then I have a very similar problem with iTunes Sharing: All Macs are running iTunes 10.2.1. On My MacBook (the same machine I have the AFP problems on), iTunes will not show me any shared libraries (regardless whether they're simple shares or activated as Home Sharing libraries).
All the other Macs, however, can "see" and access the iTunes library on the affected MacBook. So this seems to be a problem with the incoming traffic as well, as outgoing traffic works just fine.
I figured the cause could be incoming AFP, incoming Bonjour, or both. I checked the firewall settings and they're fine.
Has anyone experienced the same problems? Can anyone give me advice or a sloution to this?
    Thank you,
    Peter

    Hello,
I just wanted to give you a quick follow-up on this topic and then close it. I found the solution.
So it turned out, that it was all my router's fault.
I use a D-Link DIR-300 hardware revision A. It had firmware 1.04 installed with a german language pack. With this firmware, the router was not able to route bonjour traffic connected via wired ethernet to computers connected wireless via AirPort. So my MacBook was sending Bonjour traffic using AirPort, but didn't get any responses. So it couldn't show up on any computer connected using ethernet. AirPort-to AirPort-Bonjour worked fine, ethernet-to-ethernet-Bonjour also worked fine. But AirPort-to-ethernet-Bonjour did not work at all.
I upgraded the router's firmware to the latest version, 1.05. It now works - as long as I omit the german language pack, ironically.

Is there a way for two people to play music on Apple TV?  We both have itunes [she on windows, me on mac [mt lion].  We can turn on home sharing but we have separate email accounts.

    Use Boot Camp Assistant in
    Applications/Utility
    Remove the partition.
There is also a full pdf help guide built in Help menu there.
There are other methods also. Use OS X DVD and delete it but you can't do so while booted from your hard drive.
Memory = "RAM" that programs use and get loaded into to run
Your partition is part of hard drive physical storage where OS and applications are kept until needed.
And yes, Mac needs to have 20GB or 20% minimum to avoid problems and will run slower with such small amount of free space.
You could also do one of a number of ways to backup and then boot from another device and reformat and then restore your drive.
A "Mac Pro" is a workstation with multiple internal drive bays so really easy to backup, put Windows on its own hard drive; and no need to have someone else do anything - at all.
