ITunes won't open - unknown error

I upgraded to iTunes 5.0.1 and since then when I open iTunes it goes to the license agreement and when I click agree I get a message saying it can not be opened and an unknown error occurred. I have repaired permissions and it still won't open. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this problem. Thanks!

Richard & Walter, welcome to the Apple Discussions...
try this, open the iTunes folder in your Music folder and select the iTunes Library file... type command-D to duplicate the file... put the original on your desktop and edit the name of the copy to be the same as the one you moved to desktop... after edit double/click on the file...
come back and let's know how you get on .... TP

  • ITunes won't open, unknown error (-200)

I'm on a G5 running OS 10.4.6. Unexpectedly my iTunes stopped opening(latest version 6.4). When trying to open it, it immediately quits and this message appears:
"The iTunes application could not be opened. An unknown error occurred (-200)."
ALSO, the sound on my computer has stopped working, with the exception of the start-up chime. Both of these problems started to occur at the same time (and out of nowhere as I've done nothing different or unusual.)
I have run Diskwarrior (which fixed a bunch of other files and directories!) and have also run the MAC Disc Repair successfully. I have also deleted and reinstalled iTunes three times. However, I still get the same error message and no sound (except for start-up). All of my other programs work fine.
I'm frustrated and out of ideas! Help please!
    Thank you,

    Error code -200 means:
noHardware - Required sound hardware not available [no hardware support for the specified synthesizer]
The hardware still works, as you wrote "the sound on my computer has stopped working, with the exception of the start-up chime. "
I'm no expert on these kind of problems, but it looks to me, a driver is missing or corrupted.
You could try to fix it by (re-)running the latest OS X 10.4.6 combo-update.
    This will sometimes fix problems.
If that fails, you might have to do an Archive and Install. More hints about that feature here
Before doing all that, it could be wise to post a question in the Using Mac OS X Tiger forum.
There are some very knowledgeable people answering questions there.
Maybe someone has a simple solution.
    Hope this helps.

  • Downloaded 7.0, iTunes won't open :  "unknown error occured (0x666D743F)"

Running Windows 2000, downloaded the new version and keep get the following error.
When I open iTunes, the disclaimer pops up for me to save, accept or decline. I click decline, and get the following error.

    Any help?

Try taking a look at the Hardware acceleration on your Sound card..
I'm pretty sure that it's the same for Win 2K, but For WinXP I know that it is
    1) Open Control Panel
    2) Open Sounds and Audio Devices
    3) Click the Audio tab
    4) Click the top "Advanced" button
    5) Click the Performance tab
    6) Move the Hardware acceleration slider down to the next setting above 'None'

  • Itunes won't open. continual error message

Itunes 8 won't open. I click to try to open it and I get "itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close." I've tried plugging in Ipod to see if it will help in opening itunes. it won't. I've uninstalled and reinstalled. I've tried taking itunes library out and opening...same error. Please help!

Try removing the Genius database. In the "Finder" go to the /username/Music/iTunes/ directory and delete the "iTunes Library Genius.itdb" file. This may allow the program to launch again. This file will be recreated upon first use of the "Genius" feature.

  • IPod Touch not recognized in Windows & iTunes won't start unknown error -50

I have been trying to fix a connectivity issue with my iPod touch for almost 6 hours now. I've read all over the iPod Touch forums and none of the solutions worked for me. I've installed and uninstalled iTunes multiple times and nothing seems to work.
Also, earlier this evening iTunes was working but it wouldn't recognize my iPod touch although it would charge. Now that iTunes won't start I'm also having problems with charging my iPod and at no time, was my iPod ever recognized in 'My Computer'.
Someone please help! I'm at my wits end without being able to use and update my iPod. All help/insight/suggestions are appreciated and thanks in advance!

  • ITunes won't open - wordless error message

When I try to open itunes, I get a wordless error message that only shows a red octagon behind the itunes application symbol. The only option is to click 'OK'. Any ideas what this is and how to deal with it? I haven't used itunes in a few weeks, so I have no idea when this problem occurred. I've searched online and in the forum, so apologies if I'm missing something obvious!

Try removing the Genius database. In the "Finder" go to the /username/Music/iTunes/ directory and delete the "iTunes Library Genius.itdb" file. This may allow the program to launch again. This file will be recreated upon first use of the "Genius" feature.

  • ITunes won't start - Unknown error 13014 (solved)

I'm posting this up to add to the combined wisdom and help somebody suffering the same difficulty.
I recently bought an iPod Touch so of course had to download iTunes (9.0.3.15) in order just to turn it on for the first time (not happy - I bought it to use as a stand-alone device and I don't think Apple should presume I have a PC or want to connect an iPod to it).
    Computer OS: WinXP SP2
Anyway, everything was fine to start with, iPod started up and I began to explore it, then I used iTunes on the PC (iPod not connected) to have a look around the apps store, downloaded a few little freebies as a taster.
Then came the problems. Next time I tried to run iTunes on the PC, it wouldn't start and an error message window popped up "*Unknown error 13014*".
I googled the problem and found this forum, and the suggested solutions comprised:
    1. Delete the Library Genius database files
    2. Clean the Windows registry
    3. Uninstall and reinstall iTunes
    4. Wind back to a previous version of iTunes
I didn't try number 4, but I did everything else to no effect (the database files are in My Documents\My Music\iTunes by the way). I uninstalled, cleaned the registry, rebooted, installed, cleaned the registry, rebooted... still no good.
Then I spotted something which suggested I needed XP SP3 (didn't see why it should make a difference as iTunes had worked originally), and I have always been reluctant to interfere with a working PC, but with trepidation I bit the bullet and updated. To no effect (but at least I haven't broken anything).
So I re-read the forum advice and had an idea. *I renamed the iTunes directory (in My Music) so that it wouldn't be found when iTunes starts, lo and behold iTunes started up fine* and built a new iTunes directory.
The old directory contains the free apps I downloaded, I don't know if one of them is causing the problem but I might try copying the files over and see if anything breaks. I will post again if I find out anything.

PS: I have the corrupt iTunes folder preserved, I can zip it up and email it if the support team would like to dissect it.

  • Itunes won't open -- no error either

ITunes isn't opening. When I click to start the application nothing happens. The Task Manager says that iTunes is running under processes, but the application does not open. If I try to end the process nothing happens. Before updating to the most recent version of iTunes, my music had stopped playing in iTunes. It looked as if the song should be playing, but no sound was coming out of the speakers; if these two things could be related. Any suggestions are welcome.

    hi Greg!
let's first try to get your itunes running again.
are you running Norton Internet Security 2005? if so, first try the "Lorraine" technique:

if you're not running NIS 2005, try:

  • ITunes won't open--no errors or anything....

Subject pretty much sums it up. I've used iTunes for a while now, and i'm running on Windows XP. I updated a few days ago to the current version, and ever since then, iTunes has not opened. I have tried everything from uninstalling and reinstalling, restarting my computer, running maintenance, or even just plugging my iPod into my computer to see if iTunes will start that way. I get nothing. When I press Ctrl+Delete, I can see that iTunes is running, but the screen never comes up. What should I do?? This is totally frustrating.

doh... you got me hahaha. Other then using the microsoft clean up utility im stumped.
Not to sure why its saying that. I would def use the clean up utility and follow the steps in this document to use it http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93976 after using the utility, I would remove itunes(get the latest versionf rom the site) and QT standalone(it doesnt actually REMOVE the software)
If that doesnt work.. im freaking stumped. That fix has worked for me countless times. Could be a registry issue at that point. mabye if you have a clean up utility for the registry try to clean up files for quicktime.
Worse comes to worse is restore/reinstall OS or do a backdate to when it worked

  • Itunes won't open. says error report

everytime i click on itunes a window comes up saying
"iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close.
we are sorry for the inconvenience."
then at the buttom there are two links sayind SEND ERROR REPORT and DON'T SEND.
clicking either one won't do anything.
neither will uninstalling it and reinstalling it.
    or restarting my computer.
    i need help.

let's first check to see if this is associated with a problem with your QuickTime. (iTunes needs a properly functioning QuickTime in order to work correctly.)
try launching your QuickTime. does it:
    (a) launch perfectly fine?
    (b) fail to launch with an error message? (if so, what does it say?)
    (c) exhibit other peculiar behavior? (if so, could you describe it for us?)

  • ITunes won't open! Error -42404

I was recently upgrading my computer with upgrades that my mac came up with for me and my computer shut down in the middle of it. When I turned it back on again the upgrade window was gone and when I tried to open my iTunes I got this error message: "The iTunes application could not be opened. A required iTunes component is not installed. (-42404)."
I've searched for this error on the support pages and have found nothing. Help?!

I had the same error messages. Quick and easy steps:
    1. Control panel/ remove All quick tunes and itunes.
(if itunes will not delete another step involved)
    2. itunes did not delete, you must install window installer cleanup.
search down the file for itunes highlight and remove. Do the same for quick tunes if still present.
    3. Start/search for files and folders: "itunes" delete them all, "Quicktime" delete them all.
    4. Your choice, go to itunes and down load Quicktime & itunes together, or go to google and download seperately. (my choice to do seperately).
    5. NOTE: ( don't know if this was necessary) but rebooted computer after each step.
Through much trial and effort and a bunch of research, it finally worked.
GOOD LUCK to all. Hope this works well for you all.

  • ITunes won't open, QuickTime error message

By accident, I deleted QuickTime, and can now not open iTunes, so I downloaded QuickTime again, recieved a message that QuickTime has been successfully downloaded, but when I try to open/run it, I get this error message:
    "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\ContentIE5\TYMNQEZC\Quicktimeinstaller[1].exe is not a valid Win32 application"
I am a computer illiterate, Please help me!

hmmm. let's try an alternate technique for swapping out your QuickTime that doesn't involve redownloading an installer.
first let's just make sure your previous QuickTime is thoroughly gone.
head into your Add/Remove programs. uninstall QuickTime.
Next, we’ll manually remove any leftover program files and folders.
    1. On the Start menu, click My Computer (or double-click My Computer on the Desktop).
    2. In My Computer, open Local Disk.
    3. Open Program Files.
    4. Right-click on the QuickTime folder and click Delete from the shortcut menu.
    5. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\.
    6. Remove the files QuickTime.qts and QuicktimeVR.qtx.
    7. Restart your computer.
next, we'll get a fresh copy of QuickTime into your PC by doing a repair install of itunes.
switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the repair install.
go into Add/Remove and select itunes. click "Change" and then click "Repair".
if the repair install goes through okay, restart the PC and try launching itunes again. does it launch properly now?
