ITunes won't open without ipod attached

I recently updated iTunes to 7.0.1. If I attempt to open iTunes without having my iPod attached it opens but before I can do any thing it is forced closed. A dialogue box pops up informing me that iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to be closed, I'm given the option to report the problem to Microsoft and close or just close. is anyone else encountering this?

good lord.
okay, it's plausible that you've got two different problems going on at once here.
underlying it might be a version of a drive letter confusion:
Windows confuses iPod with network drive and may keep iPod from mounting or songs may seem to disappear
(see also the link to the MS KB doc)
... which is working so that either your My Music folder has either accidentally made its way on to the ipod, or that it's only being seen when the ipod is plugged in.
when it's not being seen, you get the problem described in this document:
iTunes for Windows: "Disk is locked" or "iTunes folder cannot be found" when installing or opening iTunes
... is there any particular reason why you have to have your "My Music" folder on your F drive, rather than your C drive?

  • ITunes Won't Open Without iPod Connected To Computer

Up until a day or so ago, I was able to open iTunes without the iPod attached. Now when I try to do so, it says the iTunes folder cannot be found or created and that the default location is in the "My Music" folder. When I then attach the iPod to the computer, everything works great. With the iPod attached and iTunes open, I changed the iTune preferences to reflect my actual music folder location (F:\My Music), but I still cannot get it to open without the iPod attached.

  • Updated iTunes--won't open without agreeing to Ping

Just updated iTunes and tried to open it. Got a message saying I had signed up for Ping, and I hadn't. Not interested in Ping, declined agreement but iTunes won't open to let me proceed without Ping. Why can't I just decline and proceed without it? All topics are about getting rid of it after accepting. Am I able to avoid it in the first place?
    Thanks!

  • ITunes won't open when iPod is connected

    Hello,
I tried syncing my 3rd Generation Ipod Nano like I always do, via a dock connector and my laptop. But when I plugged it in it at first wasn't being recognized by iTunes (10), so I closed the program to see if a reboot of the program would solve the problem, and now iTunes just won't open while my iPod is plugged in to my laptop! Once I unplug though, iTunes pops back up!!
More information: It looks like my laptop may not be recognizing the USB Port that I plugged my dock connector in to. I don't get that symbol in the Notification Area that something is plugged in to a USB Port. I've tried other ones though, same problem.
I've also had to unplug my iPod from the connector without ejecting it (as iTunes wasn't recognizing the device, so I couldn't) will this damage my iPod?

  • Itunes won't open without quicktime installation

My itunes won't budge. It says the new quicktime 7.13 needs to be installed. I've went through the same process downloading it about 3 times. At the end of every one it says "Can not download, the new verison is present on this computer." (something along those lines you get the picture). But everytime I click on itunes or a music file the same message about quicktime appears and it tells me to reinstall itunes, which I've done as well.
Someone have any idea what's going on?

No, the iTunes program itself is in a completely different Windows folder than the actual music files.
But you SHOULD back up your music files, ya know.
Anyway. Do a QuickTime standalone install.
Make sure to turn off your security software (norton or whatever) before saving the file to your hard drive.
Then run QuickTimeSetup.exe from your hard drive.

  • ITunes won't open when iPod is docked

Independently, both my iTunes and my iPod work fine. I always leave my iPod docked so it will stay charged, but when I click to open iTunes, the icon in the dock just bounces ; it never opens. If I pull the iPod out of the dock (even though it says Do Not Disconnect), iTunes opens fine. Then, I stick the iPod back in the dock, iTunes sees it, and immediately goes into iPod update. So, not a terrible problem, but how come I can no longer open iTunes while it's docked? I am afraid that one of these days, pulling the iPod out of the dock without unmounting it is gonna crash it.
    Any thoughts??
    Ben

    I have the same issue!!!
I have iTunes 6 and the latest software on my 3G iPod. I thought it was the iPod, so I completely formatted it in Disk Utility then restored it with a fresh copy of the iPod software. Once that was done, I auto-syned back into iTunes.
The same thing still happens. If the iPod is docked for only a minute or two I can update it in iTunes but after that, iTunes looks like it's updating but the thing never mounts. This is also the case when opening iTunes. I pull out the iPod and redocking gets it to work.
There is something going on with the newer versions of iTunes and the 3G iPods.

  • ITunes Won't Open When Ipod Touch is Connected

This issue randomly started happening with iTunes 8 about a week ago. If I connect my iTouch to my computer, iTunes will load in the task manager, but not on my desktop. This also happens if I check "automatically open iTunes when iPod is connected"'
The strange thing is- if I open iTunes BEFORE connecting my ipod, and then connecting it after, everything works fine.
I've confirmed that all the additional programs are running in the task manager (iTuneshelper, exe, etc) when I connected the ipod before opening itunes. I've also tried reinstalling all Apple programs (iTunes, Quicktime, etc), and resetting the settings on my iTouch, but nothing works.
Any ideas, and thanks for your help.

FWIW i get this now and then on my winblows 'puter and just chalk it up to that. I've flushed caches and queues and rebooted and all that who-ha and quite frankly when it locks up it ticks me off to no end ('cuz it SHOULDNT do that) but i have a cold one and figure they have kindergartners doing the system programming nowadays and go from there.

  • Itunes won't open if ipod is connected

my itunes will open and then a windows message appears that says "itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close" but this only happens if my ipod is plugged in. HELP!!!!

Does your quicktime work perfectly? I got that message when I tried to open iTunes 5 a couple times, and my quicktime wasn't being sensed by the computer at all. It was just there.

  • ITunes won't open without Quicktime

Recently, I was in the process of upgrading iTunes. Something came up and I had to cancel the upgrade. Now, when I go to open iTunes, it says that I need a higher version of Quicktime, and to try re-installing iTunes. I know this is probably a stupid question, but if I reinstall iTunes, I won't lose all my music, will I?

No, the iTunes program itself is in a completely different Windows folder than the actual music files.

  • Quicktime won't update, itunes won't open...having no luck :(

I'm getting an error message when I try to download the current quicktime. iTunes won't open without it. The error message is below:
It says "Could not open key:
HKEYLOCALMACHINE\Software\Classes\QuickTimePlayerLib.QuickTimePlayerApp\CLSID. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel"
I tried a link that was posted in another discussion about manually editing the registry and it did not change anything. I still get the same error message. I've actually looked over quite a few suggestions in other discussions (like deleting quicktime all over the place and trying to reinstall it) and nothing seems to work. I finally was able to get the newest version of itunes downloaded. However, when I go to launch itunes it will not open b/c it says that i need the newest version of quicktime (which i cannot download). When I try to download it via standalone, it gives me a new error message similar to the original except now the location is QuickTime.QuickTime rather than QuickTimePlayerLib.QuickTimePlayerApp. Before I uninstalled QT, I was able to edit the registry for the QT Player LIb and App. Since they did nothing I unistalled it again. However, after I uninstalled it, (and reinstalled just itunes which it finally updated) I tried to reinstall and it would not install because the new error message is the most resent one above... in the registry it will not let me change/save any permissions changes to QuickTime.QuickTime. I've again tried to uninstall it but now QT isn't there at all. I've been at this thing for a week and nothing seems to be working... any suggestions? I would love help!!!!
Oh, and I don't know if this will help at all, but I have an ipod mini from like 2003... when I couldn't get itunes to update at all to the current version I decided to uninstall itunes and my ipod mini... so then i had to reinstall my ipod with the cd software that came with it which also installed itunes... it worked fine and would open... then I tried to update itunes again and somehow i managed to get it to update itunes... however, when i go to launch itunes it won't let me b/c of the version of quicktimes i currently have. Thanks in advance for any help!

so i tried to download the windows installer update from the link you gave me but now i'm getting a different error and it won't let me download the installer. The error reads:
    Windows Script Host
    Script: C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\IXP000.TMP\StartMsl.vbs
    Line: 1
    Char: 1
Error: ActiveX component can't create object: 'Scripting.FileSystemObject"
    Code: 800A01AD
    Source: Microsoft VBScript runtime error
I have no idea what this means or how to fix it. Please help!

  • Itunes won't open, music gone after installing ipod/itunes software again

I was using itunes to purchase music and burn it to cds. I recently got a nano and tried to install the software last night. Now Itunes won't open, and I don't even see any of my downloaded music on my computer. It's possible that it's a problem with my computer, but we're also looking into the issues reported with Norton, etc. I should know more by tonight. My question is how do I get my music back if it was somehow deleted by this process? Obviously I've already purchased it, but I don't remember all the songs and I didn't have a backup.

You need to search your hard drive(s) and recycle bin for the music files.
Purchased music will always have a .m4p file extension.
Without a backup, if the files are gone, the music is gone.

  • Accidentally disconnected ipod, now itunes won;t open

i accidentally disconnected my ipod, and had to force quit itunes (i have Mac Book pro, running a Mac OS).
No, itunes won't open when i click it in the bar, and when i try to open it with the finder, it just says "an unxpected error occurred (error code -600).

In your post you say you have a MBP, this is the Windows forum. You will probably find more help in the Mac forum.

  • ITunes won't open (this isn't an idiot question)

When I first got my iPod mini, I set everything up the way I wanted it and iTunes would open every time I plugged my iPod in. It was beautiful. Now, even though I didn't change anything to my knowledge, iTunes won't open when I plug my iPod into my computer--instead the folder for my contacts and calender opens as if I'm plugging in an external harddrive, and not my iPod. I never told Windows or iTunes to do that, and I still have the "Open iTunes when this iPod is attached" option selected. I've reselected it twice already hoping it was just a fluke, but no luck. I have to close that stupid folder that comes up, manually open iTunes, and even then iTunes takes a minute to realize I have an iPod attached.
I already searched the support pages, and I couldn't find anything. Maybe someone here can help me?
Dell Insprion 600m   Windows XP   laptop

Hmmmm... I had this happen a while ago with an older version of iTunes and the iPod firmware. I was able to fix it after re-installing iTunes and updating the firmware. If that doesn't work, try uninstalling the iPod in the Windows Device Manager.
With the iPod connected, right-click on My Computer and select "Properties". Go to the "Hardware" tab and click on "Device Manager". Find the iPod in the device listing ("Apple iPod USB Device" under "Disk drives" if you're using the USB connection), right click on it, and select "Uninstall" Tell Windows that you really do want to uninstall the device, and disconnect the iPod after it's fininshed. Then reconnect the iPod. Windows should recognize it as a new device and automatically install it. If it says you need to restart, do so.
That might fix the problem (windows will treat the iPod as a new device and remove whatever settings are currently opening the folder and making iTunes not launch).
