IWeb '08:  domain and web hosting issues

This is a comment on iWeb '08 in conjuction with a .mac account:
I was delighted when I first read in Macworld about the new iWeb '08, as I had hoped very much, being a fledgling small business owner, and having very little computer web-coding knowledge, to be able to easily put up a great website with my own domain. I thought, "wow, I can now use these for my own domain name, publishing easily via .mac.!"
Well, as I pursued my research on this, I found also through Macworld (here is the link)
http://www.macworld.com/2007/08/reviews/iweb08/index.php -- that as great as iWeb '08 is, if you truly want to have a smooth experience with your own website, and are not a practiced web-techie, the iWeb/.mac/yourowndomain.com will hobble you in various ways. See further discussions of this on the .mac forums.
My suggestion to Apple:
1) Why not just sell the iWeb templates in a separate package, so that they can be used freely on personal or commercial domains registered with chosen web hosting companies? Apple can of course, choose the price on this!
2) If Apple is going to do iWeb templates, they need to remain in the accepted, easily downloadable format that is required of everything else on the Internet. .mac forum posters complained about the long download time and apparently didn't realize that iWeb images are in the PNG file-heavy format instead of JPG. Converting these to JPG causes you to lose some design features in the original files.
3) Or, why not just have a really simple, Apple-intuitive web-design program using a bunch of templates that you can customize to some extent? This would be something especially for non-tech types like me who just want to easily put up a simpler classy website whether for small business or personal use.
4) If you are going to be a web hosting company, be a web hosting company! Or else, just say it plainly, ".mac is for you to have a family and friends website, and that's it!" Why have all the current hassles involved with publishing via .mac to yourowndomain.com? Apple has great things going and could be a top notch web-hoster for all the mac owners. The beauty of Apple is the classy design, and the intuitive nature of (well, most of) its products.
I think you have lots and lots of host-and-design-your-website-right-with-dotmac wannabes waiting in the wings out there!
Just my two cents. Or three or four...

I think I was struggling with the same issue. I have a small commercial site and it would not be appropriate to link direct to .mac. I really like the ease that changes can be made to .mac so I added a cname record to "mydomain.com". It just kicked in yesterday but it seems to work great (hosted by aplus.net). The address bars shows "mydomain.com/whatever" as you work your way thru the web site. I was under the impression that it would only show "mydomain.com" even if you were in pages within the site. I am definitely a non-tech type when it comes to web sites. Seems I now have the best of both worlds - I can make changes to the site in minutes with no ftp, and users see the correct domain name...
My only concern: how does google handle indexing???

I already have a domain (at go daddy) and web hosting (at yahoo) but am wondering if the websites I make in iWeb can be uploaded to these instead of using .mac. Sorry if this has already been asked but I was just getting bits and pieces of info to answer this. Thanks for your help. - David

  • OS X Server take the place of QuickMail and web host email?

    Hi All,
I have been doing quite a bit of searching in the forums and with google.
Here is what our situation currently is:
Cable modem with dynamic IP address. Web hosting account with JaguarPC.com for our Internet email. Clients are all running with Leopard Mail app on either iMacs or MacBooks. We are using Mail app for the Internet messages (sending and receiving). That part works fine.
G5 tower running OS X Server 10.3 for all of our file serving needs.
We are using the latest/last version of QuickMail (not very recent!) for all LAN/Intranet messaging. QuickMail used to run fine in the OS 8 & 9 days, but each update of OS X causes it to be more unstable and unreliable.
What our goal is would be this:
Same Internet connection (cable modem + dynamic IP). Same web host. BUT, we would like to have our OS X Server (10.3) take the place of QuickMail AND use the Mail app for both the Internet messaging and all of the LAN/Intranet messaging.
Is this possible? If so, if you would be so kind, could you throw some hints, tips and or links our way to help set this up.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Troy

Out of the box, no, you can't do this.
The internal mail is easy - you can do whatever you like on your own network. The issue is in running external mail.
There are all kinds of issues in running external mail on a dynamic IP address, mostly as a result of spam (many ISPs, including all the big guys will not accept mail from dynamic IP addresses because it's likely spam).
That's not to say you can't run a mail server per se, but if half your mail doesn't get to the recipient (and you can't predict which ones will), it's hardly viable.
You do have options, though. First you could configure your mail server to relay all outgoing mail through your ISP. Since you're on their network they are obliged to accept mail from you and they'll forward it to the appropriate domain via one of their mail servers. That takes care of outgoing mail.
Incoming mail is a whole different issue. On a dynamic IP address there's no way to tell other domains where your mail server is. The typical solution for this is to have some other mail server (on a static address) accept your mail and hold it for your mail server that periodically checks in and retrieves the mail via ETRN.
Ironically, QuickMail does this very well (it really was one of its strengths). Postfix (the mail server included in Mac OS X Server) can do this, but it's not supported via Server Admin (the GUI used to configure the server), so you'll have to get under the hood and configure it - as well as find an upstream mail server that supports ETRN.
For postfix, check the Postfix ETRN guide. For the mail server, ask your ISP if they support ETRN (you'll likely need to get to at least second-level support since the first-level folks probably can't even spell it ).

  • Lion and web-hosting

If I upgrade to Lion from Snow Leopard, must I find a new web host, such as GoDaddy, for my iWeb-designed websites?

My iweb.app got moved over with my upgrade to Lion. Still available on older iLife DVD only.
iWeb is no longer being supported however. MobileMe.com is being phased out as well and replaced by iCloud.com.
Sooner or later you will have to find new host, whether you continue to use the depreciated iWeb.app would be up to you.

  • Web hosting issues

It seems that you are using a free web hosting package. The code is very messy. The DNS lookup failed on your domain, are you sure it's pointing to your server and site directory? Until you can provide some helpful info to help you, I'm afraid there's nothing we can do to help.
EDIT: I see you deleted your post with code and replaced it with an attachment. This should be index.htm
I'd advise you speak to your web hosting provider.

Could be either. Can you provide more information, please? Something like; What is the code? Click the code icon in the text toolbar and paste in the code for us to analyze. Are you using a Windows or Linux web server? Is it shared hosting?Where are you placing the files? Give use the full directory in the server. What is the domain registrar? Has it been successfully added onto your server? Does it come up by server IP?

  • Moving Exchange email and web hosting from Godaddy

While I consider myself very well versed in everything PC/Mac, I am finding that setting up a newly installed OSX 10.6 server is a little more difficult than originally imagined to set up.
I am running 10.6 server off an iMac with 4gb ram and plenty of storage space as well as a great upload speed thanks to FiOS. I would like to first move my email from godaddy since their hosted exchange service is rather expenssive for a small business. If someone could provide a relatively easy step by step on setting this up for a group of 5 users, it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

First question - do you have a static IP address on your FiOS link?
If you don't have a static address, but have a dynamic address, then stop right here and don't think about moving on until you have a static address. Seriously.
On the other hand, if you do have a static address then all you need to do is:
    1) create the user accounts on the server
    2) enable mail service on the server (SMTP and at least one of IMAP and POP)
    3) Configure your router to route incoming connections on port 25 to your server (and port 143 and/or 110 if you want IMAP or POP access from outside your network)
    4) change your DNS to add an MX record for your domain that maps to your static IP address
The major issue you'll have is in setting up your user directory - that will require functional local DNS, so take your time with that first and work on each step one at a time.

  • Upgrade to CC from CS5 Suite--also have Adobe Muse subscription and web hosting

I have the complete Adobe CS5 suite, and I also have an Adobe Muse subscription ($14.99 a month for that). The Muse subscription ends in November.
If I upgrade to CC at the discounted rate that is valid until 7/31/2013, will my $14.99 a month bill for Adobe Muse automatically be stopped--as the CC membership includes Adobe Muse and the Business Catalyst web site hosting (as far as I can tell)?
    Thanks!

    Hi centaurincident,
It will not be cancelled automatically You can either call Adobe at 800-443-8158 or you can contact us through chat and then cancel the muse subscription.

  • Borderless Linux help... website, and web hosting

Im sure as you guys know borderless linux is a distro thet is a live cd based of arch in the Gnome form. We just lost our hosting by a close guy to the group., im sure he left because we haven't been real active, but i can tell you this, that we just bought a dedicated machine just for borderless, and will be working with sean on it on Sunday.  When we lost hosting by him, we lost the site, the forums, and the wiki, just about all of our documentation. I would like if someone could recreate the site, maybe if they want to redo the site all together, or just redo some and add a SMF forums and wiki. Im just using bluehost now, but would rather have it on a dedicated web server. We do have one guy who has volunteered for working on the wiki and forums for us, but would also like another, or a generous person who will just host the site for us. as of right now we have no forums obviously, so that why im coming here, at least since its the base off distro. If you cant or dont have the time, no biggie we will figure something out! lol  im praying we will have a new release out at least lol, or our borderless linux mercury  1.0 ..... Thanks to everyone, and especially those who may consider helping!
    Thanks,
    ryclegman

<- use to redirect to borderless-linux.org so it really is done, we just have the old site up..

Well i guess there may not be another need for a distro, but it has a;ways been a goal of mine to create one. It isnt a Ubuntu repeat either. Last time i checked we are only really using Gnome which is what makes it like it, and still we have integrated a dock and other things to make it our own look. If people think im looking for money im not at all! i am just extremely focused on making our own distro which is extremely eye friendly. Iv asked for help with hosting the site and recreating it....... We bought a computer for Borderless to be dedicated on so we arnt just not doing anything. If remaining quite until we finish the next  release would make some happy i will, i was jsut wondering if anyone would like to help... lol im not begging or anything
If the chakra disto would except My other buddy and me to create a gnome edition i would be in for sure!

    Hi there,
I would like to seek your counsel with regards to the recent incident that we encountered with our CiscoWorks LMS 3.1 running on Solaris 10.
A few days ago, we received a few complains from our users that they were unable to view the pollers or contents of the TOP-N <CPU | Memory | Interface> Utilization on the HUM’s home page (see attached file, hum_homepage.jpg).
We (tech support guys) checked the pollers’ status and they’re all Active (see attached file, pollers.jpg); we notified our Administrators and requested for a copy of the HUMPortal.log (see attached file, humportal.zip).
The following day, while waiting for the HUMPortal.log, we received reports that users accessing the HUM home page are stuck with the message “loading…” on all TOP-N Utilization reports.
As we were about to re-queue our request from our administrators, we received reports (a few hours ago) that our CiscoWorks LMS is inaccessible via web browser.
We alerted our administrators and they attempted to restart the Daemon Manager (/etc/init.d/dmgmtd); they were able to successfully shut it down but took several attempts to start it up.
As they attempt to start up the Daemon Manager, they encountered the following error message:
    # /etc/init.d/dmgtd start
Error: Daemon Management could not start. Trying again
Error: Unable to bind to port, please check port (42340) state and permissions.
Error: If the port is in use, please try starting Daemon Manager once it become free.
After several minutes passed, they were able to start up the Daemon Manager successfully although the CiscoWorks LMS is still inaccessible via web browser.
We requested for a copy of the “pdshow –brief” log and every daemon (as far as I know) seemed to be working fine but it never hurts to ask for help to verify my findings (see attached file, pdshow0818a.log).
As of the moment of  this writing, we are still unable to access CiscoWorks LMS via web  browser; any insight or suggestion on the next step to take in  troubleshooting and eventually solving this problem is very much  appreciated.

The port 42340 issue is most likley not related to the HUM issue you described. The latest log entry you provided indicates "Possible reasons for 'No Data' in HUM Portlets could be either Poller is not configured, or Poller is deactivated, or Poller Failure has occurred, or Summarization job did not start." The error is repeated back to the beginning of the file dated Aug 14 16:39.
To focus on the HUM issue:
Did any change occur on or around the 14th that you are aware of?
    Please provide some additional debugs:
    1. Please enable debug for "UPMProcess"
Log files are stored here: #/var/adm/CSCOpx/log/#
    - HUMPortal.log
    - upm_summarization.log
    - jrm.log
    - upm_process.log
    2. To set log levels:
*Health and Utilization Monitor > Admin > System Preferences*.
    - Select Log Level Settings.
    - Select the application module from the drop-down list.
    - Select the Debug log level from the Logging Level drop-down list.
    Thanks,
    Nick

  • Iweb and personal hosting

can I use iweb to make a website, and host it on a personal domain and web hosting site instead of mobile me or dot mac?

  • Don't need a web host. Help?

I just redesigned a webpage with Muse and would like to publish it using my current domain and web host (blue host), which is not business catalyst. I also have the $14.99 monthly plan to use Adobe Muse. How can I make my current domain to point to the redesigned website?  Apologies if my question is not clear. I appreciate any help on this subject.

In business catalyst, we add a domain name from third party, and re-delegate the name servers to point to business catalyst. I think, your current hosting provider should have the exact details which you are looking for. Did you try to check it with your host, only they can help you with this. check this link, might be helpful

  • Do I need to embed QT movies in my iWeb site if I am using another web host

I am going to be posting my iWeb site to another web hosting service (bluehost.com). Does anybody know if I will need to embed the QuickTime movies I have on my site. Do I need to purchase QuickTime Pro to accomplish this task? How difficult is embedding the QuickTime movies to a non.Mac web hosting service?
    Many thanks for your assistance

I believe that as long as you drag and drop your QT movies into iWeb, it will embed the QT movies for you when you "publish to folder." Then all you will need to do is upload the folder to your webhost.
No need to buy QTPro unless you are trying to convert from one format to another.
    Good luck!

  • Upload iWeb website to GoDaddy FTP hosting server

I purchased a domain (huaichuanrui.co.uk) and web hosting from GoDaddy. I created a website in iWeb '09 (version 3) and clicked on the site name in the left hand sidebar. I filled in all the FTP server information - in the server address box, I've tried ftp.huaichuanrui.co.uk, huaichuanrui.co.uk, http://huaichuanrui.co.uk, the IP address, ftp://huaichuanrui.co.uk, everything. I've typed the username and password for my hosting account correctly. I left the Directory/Path field empty like most people recommend, but I've also tried it with the folder location on my Mac (/Huaichuan_Rui), /Huaichuan_Rui/, all sorts. I left Protocol as FTP and Port as 21. Still, no luck. Testing keeps failing.
I've also tried uploading the site folder to the GoDaddy hosting control panel thing where it says "Upload Files". It all uploaded, but still nothing. The homepage preview is shown as "pageok". Now when I visit my site, it says "Coming Soon - Future home of something quite cool".
No luck at all in publishing my iWeb website to GoDaddy's FTP hosting server.
Anyone have any ideas how to resolve this issue? Thank you.

  • A Web Hosting Diary...guide/?'s/Help!

I'm moving this thread here, because it wasn't getting any attention.  I had it buried in some obscure tutorial comment section--a niche void of the netherworld.  Anyway, I copied it all over because I was tired of listening to myself.  My hope is to help those, like me, who are total n00bs to websites and web hosting.  Be sure to read thru the post first or you'll make the same mistakes I did!  :-).  It can be discouraging.  Also, I hope to get help from others who have forged ahead, and who can shed some light on questions I have as they develop.  Thanks in advance.
3/21/2010 - Swallowed the red pill...entering the rabbit hole...Mad-Hatter driving me nuts!
How do I make the website I created from a tutorial with DW4 (trial version) available to others on the web?  I want to host it myself...on my own computer...the same one I'm using now.
My setup:  Windows XP Pro, xampp, and DW4.  I have an AT&T DSL modem that acts as a router (i can configure it to forward ports, etc.).  Also, I have a registered host name with dyndns (example:  myhost.dyndns.org).  Moreover, I have an update client from dyndns that supposedly updates my IP address if/when my ISP changes it.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but as I understand it an end user types in my dyndns host address into their browser's address bar.  Dyndns redirects them to my external IP, which I'm assuming is my router's IP.  Then, my router forwards the request to my pc, which is a different IP, right?  So, if I setup a virtual host on my pc that redirects any request coming from my dyndns host to a specific vhost folder, why would I need a static IP address?  I set one up anyway, because just about every post I read on the subject of hosting your own website said to do so.
I've installed Xampp and both the Apache and MySQL apps are running.  I've also started the FileZilla app.  I have forwarded the TCP ports on my router (21, 80, 8080, 3306).  I have a registered host name at DynDNS.com, and their Open Port Tool indicates that my external IP is open and accepting connections.  I have completed all three parts of the "Building your first dynamic website..."  This created a "Feedback" website that I am trying to "put" on the web (just to learn how to do it).  I edited the httpd and httpd-vhosts files to setup virtual host containers for my localhost and DynDNS host (using NameVirtualHost = *:80 consistent with my containers, and yes I added the permissions directive to the httpd-vhosts file).  I did this because, from what I gathered on several forum posts, I needed a virtual container to redirect requests coming from my DynDNS host to the proper website.  My "feedback" website functions just fine locally.
In an attempt to "put" my website on the web where others can see it, I setup a virtual host folder called E:/vhosts/Feedback.  The directoryroot in httpd-vhosts points to this location.  In the DW4 "Manage Sites..." dialogue box for remote info I selected local/network, localhost, and targeted the E:/vhosts/Feedback folder.  This seemed to work as the site was "uploaded" to that folder (I could see them in windows explorer).  However, I still could not visit the site from the web.  Next, I tried several different remote info configurations.  The only one I felt came even close to working was when I ran the FileZilla app and used FTP (to configure the remote info in "Manage Sites...").  With the FileZilla admin window open I could actually see myself logging in, but it could not find the E:/vhosts/Feedback folders.  The error said that the file did not exist or there was a permission problem.  Well, the files do exist (I can see them in windows explorer); and I thought that entering the following directive in my httpd-vhost file would avoid any permissions issues:
    <Directory E:/vhosts>
       Order Deny,Allow
       Allow from all
    </Directory>
So, I finally broke down and bought custom DNS services from dyndns.com for $30/yr.  This allowed me to register a domain name in addition to the free hosting service I had already signed up for.  I was expecting an email with the FTP info for the remote info dialogue window in DW4, as mentioned in some posts.  I did NOT receive any such an email.  Now, I feel like I just wasted 30 bucks.
I have spent 2-3 hours a night for that past few days trying to figure out how to "put" my Feedback website on the web either from my own computer or a hosting service.  I knew nothing about websites prior to downloading the DW4 trial version roughly 6 days ago.  I would not have been able to tell you the difference between a static and dynamic site.  I've learned a lot since then thanks to these tutorials and moderator feedback, but only enough to realize how much more is out there.  I've only scratched the surface so to speak.  However, I've been running in circles lately and I just don't understand what's going on.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I find it simply astounding that these tutorials would go so far as to instruct me on how to download, install, and setup xampp, create a database in myPHPadmin, setup local and test servers in DW4; and yet, somehow neglect to instruct me on how to configure these apps to make the site available from the web.  I mean, what is the point of creating a WEBsite if I can't put it on the WEB?!
3/22/2010 - Horse bucked me off into the mud...time for a new horse!
Good news:  I got a refund from DynDNS.  They only offer domain name and host name services--not website hosting!  I had misunderstood them to be a web hosting service.  Also, I think I know what the problem was.  The static IP I set from my router was still "private."  I needed to have set it to a public, external, static IP, right?  Anyway, I've given up on the whole self-hosting thing.  Gonna try GoDaddy.
3/23/2010 - Remember that story about the frog who could only jump 1/2 the distance to the end of the dock?  I know EXACTLY what that feels like...
Now, I have some kind of database problem.  I was successful in uploading my feedback website to GoDaddy.  However, when I viewed my page there were some "localhost" SQL database errors that I'm assuming were generated because the database I was referencing in my site is actually located on my machine.  So, I created a similar database on GoDaddy's PHP server, but when I go to update the location of my database in DW4 (double-clicking the db in the databases panel) it times out looking for the server, and crashes DW4 every single time.  A window pops up that says "File Activity - localhost" and it just sits there until I close it.  Then, DW4 crashes (I click the End Now button).
What do I have to do to get DW4 to use the databases I created on my host's PHP server?
    3/24/2010 - Eureka!  I'm going streaking!  C'mon everyone!
It works!  I can't believe it actually works!  It's sooooo beautiful when it works!
It was the Test Server configuration!  The name is what misled me.  I figured the Test Server was for testing purposes only--a local place to check the functionality of my site before uploading it.  But, no!  It actually determines which Application Server is acting on my website.  That's why DW4 kept crashing.  I was attempting to establish a database (MySQL) connection to my Host's Application Server with my Test Server configured for localhost!  I had a hunch this was the case, but I wasn't sure where the Application Server was located--whether on my Host's web server or on their Application (PHP) server.  I was trying to put the SQL connection info in the Test Server configuration box.  Recalling a diagram from a tutorial it dawned on me that they're both in the same place!  Once I set my Test Server to the same location as my web server (remote info)...voila!  The only difference being the pathname:  "/" for the test server, and "/feedback" for the remote info.  I could then edit my database connection without crashing.  I noticed I had to export my database from my local App Server (myPHPadmin), and import it to my Host's App Server (also myPHPadmin) in order for the website to function properly.
So, this experience has raised some new questions:
    1.  Why aren't there profiles within the site manager that would allow me to select whether I want to test locally or remotely?  As it is, I have to go in and manually change the test server to my machine's local App Server each time I want to test locally, and then change it back to my Host's App Server when I want to upload my site.  Moreover, I have to edit the database (MySQL) connection to point to a local database stored on my app server to test locally, and change it back to test remotely; which means I have to export the database from my Host's App Server, and import it to my local App Server!
    2.  If I had more than one test server, presuming I diversified my Hosts to have a backup site ready to go in the unlikely event GoDaddy's Scotsdale AZ datacenter got nuked, how would the website I was working on locally in DW4 know which site to use (from my Site Manager...)?  In other words, if I have two test servers in my DW4 Site Manager, how does the website I'm working on know which test server to use?  It seems to me that in order to establish a MySQL connection in the database panel, I need to have the correct Test Server configured.  But, if there's two how does it know which one to use?  The reason I ask is because when I click the [+] button in the database panel it only asks for a SQL server.  There is no option to select a site.  If the SQL database connection depends on the Test Server, how would it know which one of my two test servers is acting on the database?
2.a.  Why doesn't DW4 call the "Test Server" what it really is--an Application Server?!  Had this distinction been evident in the "Category" column of the DW4 Site Manager, it would have saved me a 6-day trip to a new dimension of pissed off!
    3.  What happens to my website when I try to edit the files located on my remote site?  I noticed when I attempt to load them (by double-clicking the file in my remote file panel) that a window pops up asking me if I really want to open a "dependent" file.  Does this mean my site will not function properly when I'm editing the remote file?  Or, does DW4 download a copy of it?

    Hi
I am not suprised no one answered your questions, there are simply to many of them. Can I suggest you read the faq on 'how to get help quickly at - http://forums.adobe.com/thread/470404.
Especially the section Don't which says -
    DON'T
Don't post a series of questions in  a single post. Splitting them into separate threads increases your  chances of a quick answer.

  • Your web hosting provider?

I apologize for the possible off-topic. Guys, could you tell me which web hosting company you are using at the moment? I have a problem because my current web hosting company hostrator.com is kicking me off. They say that our website is using too many server resources. But our website only gets 300 visitors per day..
Anyway, what would be your recommendations? Are you happy with your web hosting providers?
I am checking http://www.hosting24.com/ at the moment, but is it real that they can provide unlimited disk space?
I have contacted them and they say something like "1000GB disk drive costs only $30 per month, so if some day we will start running out of disk space we will simply add a new 1000GB drive so can continue uploading..".
What do you think about it? Any ideas and web hosting company name suggestions are much appreciated.

0zzass, it seems that your hosting is kicking you off more because of the big amount space that you are using than because of the number of visitors of your site... Space costs money as well!
Although I don't like doing free advertising, at the moment I'm using 1and1.com and dhapcenter.es and I'm satisfied with both them. Anyway, my space requirements are not so big as yours!
    Best regards.
