IWeb 08: Static horizontal menu with background image

Hi
I want to make a static horizonal menu bar. I want to have a 800px x 40px black bar that has a background image from the same size. The reason of a background image is because I want a logo to be in that menu. I have searched in google for samples but I haven´t been able to find one that is simple and that I can incorporate the logo in the background. Can somebody tell me a link to a place to get this or tell me a code ? I don´t know html thou

Don't really understand exactly what you are asking here? Why do you need any code to create a menu bar? You can do this very easily in iWeb.
To create a menu bar:
1. Open your page in iWeb and then open the Inspector and go to Page and click on 'Hide from menu' and 'Don't include in menu and this will turn off the iWeb built in template navigation menu.
2. To create your own menu bar, simply use either a text box or a shape and make it 800px by 40px and then place it on your page where you want your nav menu to be and type in your links and then hyperlink them to your pages by opening the Inspector and opening Hyperlink - 2nd from the end and then highlighting the text and linking to relevant pages and then setting the colours via the format link.
Don't quite understand why you want a background image in a nav menu? It will be very hard to get anything of those sizings and people do not usually have a background image in a nav menu - normally a colour. A nav menu is not the place for background images or logos - it is too small and all this should be in your header section instead.
If you want more help, then please be precise about what you are asking.

I have a slight problem with a horizontal menu bar that I have placed on my site and am hoping someone can help me. It views fine in Firefox, however in IE8 the top menu background image is white instead of the image I specified. Firefox image is below.

Spry Horizontal Menu Bar background image

Hello,
I am trying to insert a .gif file into the background of the
spry menu bar items, I believe the default was grey.
I changed it to dark grey and it worked fine but then I
decided it would look better with an image in it.
Therefore I created a .gif image that fit the menu and
inserted it into the css page for the spry menu.
However, this creates the drop down (sub) menus to be
transparent. This does not happen when I change the background back
to just a solid color. Is there a way around this?
The code that I entered was something like this:

Looking to create fully editable PDF files with background images

Hello and thank you, I create menu's and flyers for a group of restaurants. I need to make text editable PDF menus with background images. I believe Livecycle is able to do this, but would really like to hear it from someone who knows for sure. Again thank you.

FF36: Sites with background image flickers/flashes when going back to tab after 2 minutes.

Figure I'll mention this here as well.
When viewing websites with background images, such as twitter.com or my own website at www.markheadrick.com and I change to another tab for 2 minutes (this amount of time is repeatable anyway) I get a flicker of a black background before the page is fully drawn. If I have multiple tabs with the same background image, only the first tab will show the flicker. It's like it's loosing the image in memory or something. It has done this with Firefox in Safe Mode and with a new, clean profile. It has also done this with Hardware Acceleration off.
Windows 7 Pro 64bit w/ NVidia 550ti and 314.22 drivers. Newer drivers are more problematic which is why I have stayed with these.
Again, only pages with background images seem to show this flicker. Did not happen with Firefox 35 on my system.

Horizontal menu with horizontal submenu

I am trying to create a horizontal menu with a submenu that is horizontal directly underneath. So, when you hover over the items on the top menu, the list of subitems appears as a horizontal menu direclty below the the top menu. I've been able to modfy the spry tabbed panel widget to mostly do that, but there has to be a better way. It appears that the spry menu widget for the horizontal menu just has a drop down of subitems in a vertical list below the top menu item.   I've searched but can't find the answer. Could someone please help me out with suggestions? Thank you.

It would have been a lot easier to see what the problem is if you had posted a URL to your site. Now I am only guessing that you have placed an auto width on the submenu item container.

The only problem with the above sample is that when you make the style rule for the submenu items, you need to include !important next to the float as follows

How I do I create a horizontal menu with images as background?

Apple OSX.6.7
Dreamweaver CS 5.5
Template: 2 column fixed, left sidebar, header and footer
I have tried the spry horizontal menu available through the Insert panel in Dreamweaver 5.5. I thought I could set background images on the li elements, attaching via CSS and using IDs on each li. So far nothing is working especially well, and I'm fried.
What is the best way to create a horizontal menu when you want to use a background image? At this point, I'd be fine with using one image background and relying on the anchor pseudo classes for hover and active. The menu doesn't have to be an image rollover. It just has to enable me to keep the part of the banner image that descends into the menu area.
My goal is to do everything using CSS instead of resorting to a table for positioning the menu elements.

Horizontal menu with horizontal sub menu using image rollovers or similar

Hello,
I am brand new to web design and working on my first site. What I lack in skills, I have in free time to learn right now : ) Please let me know if there is a tutorial or other resource that describes what I am trying to do...I've been searching for days and just can't find what I'm after.
The design concept is a menu of main categories that apear to be floating over an object. When you hover over one, it looks like it gets pressed down in space resulting in the next line populating with subcategories to be selected. If you click on the main elements, you would be directed to that page - Services for instance. If you just hovered over a main category, you would be presented with a list of sub-categories that behave in the same fashion. If you then clicked on one of the sub-categories, you would be taken to that specific page.
Here's a sequence of images that show what I'm after.
I built all this in Illustrator as described in a Lynda.com tutorial. I then exported slices to dreamweaver and started building content. Each of the categories and sub categories is a separate slice with images built for the rollovers. I was able to build the main categories and get them to visually sink upon using an imageswap...now I'm stuck on how to get the second line to behave as I described.
This is a fun learning experience. Let me know if there is a better way to achieve the design. I just stared investigating SSIs as well and see the value in having this menu in just one place, referenced into all my subsequent pages. I have successfully embeded an SSI footer with rollovers on my page, but this menu problem is really tough for me.

I tried building a Spry Horizontal menu to get what I want, but I had no success there. Any tips for that?
On a separate note...I do not know if it is proper to use a 'tabbed panel' for my menu project, but it seems to work fine. I have built both the top (main category) and bottom (sub category) lines of my menu using spry with .png image rollovers.
Now I just need to find out how to make the main category button rollover stay 'down' while browsing the subcategories. I would also like to get the subcategories to populate upon mouseover of the main category, without requiring a selection. Now that would be slick : ) In my example above, the 'services' title should be depressed while in that submenu and look like 'landscape design'.
One minor problem is the space created between my subcategory images. I can't find the .css or .js that is creating that space. I've really trimmed down all the .css and do not know where else to hunt.

Problem with Background image and JFrame

Now the background image displays correct. But as soon as I click on some combobox that is placed within the integrated JPanel I see fractals of the opened combobox on the background. When I minimize
the Frame they disappear. Sometimes though I get also some fractals when resizing the JFrame.
It seems there is some problem with the redrawing of the background e.g. it doesn't get redrawn as often as it should be!?
Could anyone give me some hint, on how to achieve a clear background after clicking some combobox?

Horizontal Menu Bar Rollover image

I have been slowly piecing together some Horizontal Menu Bars
by learning from the code on this page...

keeping that in mind my code is probably wrong in a number of
ways. The problem that I have run into and cant seem to solve on my
own is that I want one of my Horizontal Menu bars to have rollover
images only on the primary level. If you follow the link below you
can see what I have done thus far. The "tabs" are images and I want
them to rollover to another image, which is just the same tab in a
darker shade of grey. The tabbed menu bar is labeled MenuBar2 in

Hi Beth, I have been going crazy on this end with the Sub Menus showing up at the top of the Internet Explorer Browser. They work fine in FF and Chrome...

Spry horizontal menu: submenu background problem in IE7

I am using the Spry horizontal menu in this website: http://www.isis-papyrus.com
It works perfectly on all current version browsers, but in IE7 the white submenu background only shows behind the actual text for each link and not to the border of the submenu box.
I modified the css to allow for dynamic sizing for each submenu (see below).
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You solved half my problem!
I added the bg-color to the li and ul styles of the submenus (css below) and now the white background shows correctly in IE7.
The only thing I still would like to resolve: The hover style for the menu items (inverse bg and text colors) only works for the actual text of the link and not for the entire width of the submenu box.
Any suggestions?

Spry widget menu bar background image help

Does anyone know of a good tutorial for putting a background image behind the whole menu bar, not just each button, and a tutorial for putting images behind each button.
Also, does anyone have a good tutorial on creating some sort of gallery, with thumbnails, in dreamweaver.

You can also use a background image in the container that you have your SM in. You can use in in conjuction with, or in place of images for the menu.

Spry Horizontal menu using rollover images

I see there are a lot of posts about spry menus and problems in IE. I wasnt sure if my problem is the same as the others, so my apologies if it's redundant. I'm working on a site with rollover images in the top menu of a spry menu bar with drop downs that fall below three of the menu items. Everything looks good in Mac/Win Firefox and Mac Safari. In Win IE 8 the menus go horizontally, left to right, instead of falling below the top level item as they should.

Should I not be using rollover images with the Spry menu? I've spent quite a bit of time on trying to solve this, including attempting to rebuild the menu from scratch.

I Paty, I just inserted the Dreamweaver rollover into the navigation. I'm not sure if that's the best approach to achieve what i wanted out of my design, but it seems to work. I checked it in Adobe's Browserlab and it works across all browsers. I'm looking into purchasing the Project7 product. It's not a lot of money and seems easier to work with for embedded graphics than the spry software. I spent way too much time with the spry trying to get the nav to look like I wanted it to while working in all browsers.

XML Menu with thumbnail images

Hello all,
I am trying to create a dynamic menu for a video player. Much
like the one found here (
MTV OverDrive. )Obviously
this is a Flash site and I can only assume the video list is being
generated via XML. I am trying to accomplish the same thing, only I
am not using FCS.
I just want to create the buttons dynamically with thumbnail
images and text via XML, and in turn load the video based on a
button click. I have the video part working fine, using a video
object, I just need to know how to create the buttons WITH THUMBS
from an XML file. I can figure out how to load the video once the
button is clicked. The problem is the menu itself and loading the
different thumbnail with the button.
I am sure it has something to do with "attachMovie,
DuplicateMovie, or CreateEmptyMovieClip" but I am not sure how to
do this with XML.
I really want to stay away from using the pre-built
components and want to code this myself so a list component is out
of the question.
I have search for many hours now and can not find anything
that is like what I am looking for yet. So any help pointing me in
the right direction would be much appreciated.
From what I can gather it has something to do with creating
what the button is going to look like (mainly the Background for
mouse on and over states) and save it off as a MC then giving it a
linkage ID. Within that MC I would think there would be another MC
to hold the Thumbnail image with its own linkage ID and another MC
that has a named dynamic text filed with it own linkage ID. Am I
total off base here?

Hi,
On the same line I would suggest you to create an MC and put
a button and a textField inside. Then using duplicate MC function,
create instances of this MC according to the XML. For this, create
XML nodes for each clip containing text, image to be displayed, URL
for the video etc., and repeate the node for as many as you
require. Then parse the XML in flash in an multi dimensional array.
Then using length pf array duplicate your MC and populate the
required menu. I guess this is enough for you.

Working with Background images

HI. I have a project which contains a few slides with the same background image...an image that was caught with Snagit and then merged onto the slide. I anticipate needing to replace this image with an updated one in the near future. Is there a quick and easy way of replacing that image (which contains a number of captions, highlight boxes, etc) without having to recreate the entire slide from scratch?

Please save the image (p.e. as a PNG) on your PC, do not copy it to the Clipboard. The workaround I described would work, but here is even a shorter way:
Open the Slide Properties (righ mouse click menu)
Use the button 'Change background image' and point to the image saved.
The background image will be replaced, you will see both of them in the Library in this case
But there will be no problem to delete the old image (right mouse click on the image in the Library)
