How to avoid "The application requires an earlier version of Java. "?
Hello, I deployed a Java applet built like this
javac -source 1.4 -target 1.4 foobar.javaThe reason why I do it this way, is that many public libraries, have computers that only have Java 1.4 installed (and I found one case with 1.3 but decided not to go that far), and the users have no way to upgrade them. Hence if I want to deploy an app that can be used by most everybody, which is the whole idea of Java, then I have to use 1.4, no choice.
OK, now I also have users who have the latest Vista and Firefox. On those computers, they see the following warning when my applet tries to run:
"The application requires an earlier version of Java. Do you want to continue? Run or Cancel The required version of Java, 1.6.0-oem, is not the latest and may not contain the latest security ..."
Of course, after seeing this kind of warning, I am losing a lot of those users immediately. (and by the way, I am built with 1.4, not 1.6-whatever)
This message is widely reported on the Internet and the solution is always similar - some variation of "uninstall and reinstall the latest Java".
This of course is a NON_STARTER. I cannot request my users, to reinstall Java. they won't bother. The whole idea of Java applets, again, is that I write an applet and the user sees it without having to tweak around with their computer.
So I guess my question is: what can I do in my applet, to prevent these messages from happening on Vista, and at the same time be accessible to public lib computers with Java 1.4?
And second rhetorical question: why can't Sun get their act together and deploy a platform where I can just write my code according to their specs and it will run according to their specs, without any warnings to scare away half of my users??? Please Sun tell me.
Mark

[1.4 is EOL|http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/] so I suggest you target 1.5.
Youe contention that world should not change because a small proption of near-sighted troglodites insist on wearing frilly collars is complete bunkum. Get over it. Fast.
If ever I get the chance, I shall tell Sun to continue doing exactly what they are doing with regards to developing the core Java language. Hire the best engineers; go forth and prosper; insist on backwards compatability; and never mind the bollocks (here's the sex pistols).
... or maybe one would prefer the MS .NET platform, where no version is at all backwards compatible with any previous one; is supported for just three years; with each CLR occupying a full third of ones modest laptop hard disk?
Be careful what you wish for. You just might get it.

Which application server supports EJB 3 and Java EE 5?
Hi all,
I want to develop an application using EJB 3.
I was planning on using JBOSS 4.0.4 as application server, but I am not sure whether EJB 3 is fully supported.
Which application server supports EJB 3 and Java EE 5?
ThanksJust install it using the EJB3 profile in the installer. Don't use the "All" profile
and think EJB3 is included in it :) -
II need to use Java 6 to run a web application because it isnt compatible with java 7 update 7. is this possible?
MadMAC0 posted at https://discussions.apple.com/message/20107182?ac_cid=tw123456#20107182 that:
Apple has posted (10/22/12) the approved solution for restoring the Java 6 plug-in:

Running CLDC applications in Mindows Mobile using sun-java-cldc-emu.cab
How to run CLDC applications in Windows Mobile using sun-java-cldc-emu.cab present in Java Me Platform SDK 3.0. I read the 'Java ME Platform SDK and windows mobile integration.pdf' before installing the cab. But after installing the cab the jar or jad files aren't getting associated with the JVM. When I click the jar it says 'there is no application associated with "filename". Run the application first, then open this application from within the application.' I can't find any option to open the jar file from within the Sun Java CLDC Emulator application.
I'm using Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional Images.
Is it possible to run this JVM like IBM J9 and CrEme? Is it actually a JVM??
Please help.Threre are many JSR's to give extensive support for developers, however, it is phone manufactures would impl. JVM/spec support on their devices. This is similar to JVM api for desktop, one can't extended the JVM features which take native os support, even if they do one machine.. others using it will not be able run your application as these systems relay upon standard jvm from Sun.
Wish you good luck.. if you are building the entire phone stack..

On certain web sites(with java applets embedded or rich content),sometimes browser hotkeys are beeing used with other functionality (eg.: youtube uses ctrl + tab for sliding between player controls).How can I prevent this ?
Thanks for posting this!
I would only mention that your definition is incomplete for this -
Contextual selector A type of Style Sheet Selector that
and that it's most often referred to now as a Descendent selector, not a contextual selector. It's basically the same as the Compound selector that you have already defined.... -

Applications veeeery slow after upgrading to java 1.6.0_51
upgrading to apple java 1.6.0_51 seems to cause certain applications using java to be really slow.
When using LEOworks 4.0 for instnace, it takes up to half an hour to load a file inside the application, during which de application is completely unresponsive.
It worked completely fine under the previous version of apple java though...
Is it recommended to revert to an older version of apple java? Or is this a known issue to cause certain applications to run much slower?It actually is an application hang;
this is the report:

But the problem is, this is my computer, but the computers that I am going to run my actual

do the work without ldconfig. I mean is there anyway I can configure my .so file's path without
copying it into the /usr/lib folder and without ldconfig?
I will appreciate any reply. Thanks. -
Can't enter text in certain forum dialog boxes (java?)
On certain forums and sites, I am unable to click on a dialog box and enter text. When I click in the box, it either highlights the line or the whole box but does not allow me to enter any text - the keyboard does not appear. I do not have an option to paste text either. The text/dialog boxes look similar to the one I am writing in right now. For my online classes, I use Moodle, and that's one of the sites that causes this issue. It was an issue also on my iPhone but I was hopeful that it would work differently on the iPad.
There are two methods I've found to enter text. One is through HTML and the second is unreliable -sometimes if I click in the box while I refresh, I can get the keyboard to pop up.
Any thoughts or suggestions? Java is enabled and I've tried clearing everything.According to what I read on another forum entry - to do with WYSIWYG editors - this is a problem with Safari. Apparently, it doesn't handle Javascript correctly in all cases. I administer Joomla sites and Safari on a standard machine, let alone an iPad, gives me a lot of grief. So, on any other machine I use Chrome or FireFox. Sadly, this isn't an option on an iPad. We're stuck with Safari - whether we like it or not!

How to undeploy application on the PI 7.1 Java Engine
Hi everyone,
I have a very simple and stupid question: how can I undeploy the JEE Application on a PI 7.1 server?
I mean, I've installed a JEE Application on the PI 7.1 server through JSPM. I don't use this application any longer and want to just remove it from the server. But I didn't find out how can I do this.
Thanks a lot in advance
with best regards
Xiang
Edited by: Xiang Zhang on Nov 10, 2008 10:36 AMHi Prateek,
thanks a lot for your reply. It almost solved the problem. Do you know how can use other tools to undeploy an application. I mean some tools, which have been delivered by SAP with PI 7.1, like NWA, or something else.
with regards

LOGIC PRO APPLICATIONS UPDATE 4.0.2 ERROR JAVA SCRIPT on install of PRO APP
I have recently installed Logic 8.. Upon opening Logic 8 after installing . I get an error that says I need to install a pro application support version 4.0.2 in order to run Logic 8. I then download the App Supp. update version 4.0.2 and attempt to install it. Upon installation it scans my volumes and startup disk . Then it flags an error. (red exclamation point) stating while evaluating the volumes it has found an error in my java script.. I have already inserted my OSX disc. and went to disk utilities and repaired all permissions as well as booted up in safe mode (hold down shift on boot up) and repaired all permissions in disk utilities again.. Still having the same error.. I cant have one with out the other and have exhausted a week trying to figure this problem out.... I have seen a similar post about this problem but there were issues with the "postee" about not having the OSX install disk so there was never any closure with that one....
PLEASE HELP... I would love to celebrate a successful install of Logic 8Good news, thanks for the report!
I was drawing a blank in that other thread, but while mulling it then seeing your new post... BINGO! -
Application Server 4.0 caching the Java Servlet Program
Hi all,
I am working with Oracle8i databse and Oracle Application Server 4.0. Now I need to develop some Java Servlet's Program. I successful configure the server and my Servlet program can connect to the Oracle database.
However, when I make some modification to the program and recompile it. The browser cannot refresh to the modified program. This mean that the content is't update. I think the reason may be the previous program is cached in server.
Later, I discover using the 'owsctl' utility to reload the application server can solve this problem. However, it is quite inconvenience and not favour to reloasd the server very frequently. And I guess there may have some configuration parameters in the 'OAS Manager' can help me to solve my problem.
So, anyone can tell me how to solve this problem? Thank you very much.
RegardsOAS 4.0.8.1 supports servlets. You need a patch if you implement extra path info feature of servlets. In addition, you have to bounce OAS everytime you upload new servlets. This behavior does not follow the Servlet spec and I don't know when Oracle will fix it. It is a big problem for sites trying to run 24x7.

JNDI on a Sun Application Server 9.0 from a Java SE Client
Where do I go to find a listing of property pairs I have to set to allow my Java SE application to make use of JNDI (to find Session and Entity beans)?
This is my approach from what I have read so far:
Context context;
Properties properties = new Properties();
// Assign configuration properties here.
try {
context = new InitialContext(properties);
} catch (NamingException ex) {
ex.printStackTrace();
// Put code here to start getting references to JNDI stuff....
// ...and other neat Java EE things. :)If anyone in-the-know can help steer me a little on this, I'd be very grateful!
My current setup is just a netbeans development environment. I'm using the included application server.I receive an exception in the J2SE client when trying to do lookups.
I have created a simple test of a bean and a JMS Queue
package ent1;
@Remote
public interface HelloWorld {
public String sayHello();
public void sendQueueMessage(String message);
package ent1;
@Stateless
public class HelloWorldBean implements HelloWorld {
@Resource(mappedName="jms/QueueFactory")
private QueueConnectionFactory m_QueueFactory;
@Resource(mappedName="jms/myQueue")
private Queue m_Queue;
private static final Logger logger = Logger.getLogger("ent1.HelloWorldBean");
public HelloWorldBean() {
public String sayHello() {
return "Hello From "+this.getClass().toString()+"!";
public void sendQueueMessage(String message) {
Connection conn;
Session session;
MessageProducer producer;
TextMessage msg;
try{
conn=m_QueueFactory.createQueueConnection();
session=conn.createSession(false,Session.AUTO_ACKNOWLEDGE);
producer=session.createProducer(m_Queue);
msg=session.createTextMessage(message);
producer.send(msg);
}catch(JMSException e){
logger.log(Level.SEVERE,e.getMessage(),e);
return;
logger.log(Level.INFO,"Message '"+message+"' sent");
}And I can connect to the bean and Queue from an enterprise application with resource injection.
But when I try to lookup the bean or JMS QueueConnectionFactory from an J2SE client..
InitialContext ic;
HelloWorld hello;
Hashtable<String, String> env = new Hashtable<String, String>();
env.put(Context.INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY, "com.sun.jndi.cosnaming.CNCtxFactory");
env.put("java.naming.provider.url", "iiop://localhost:3700");
try{
ic=new InitialContext(env);
hello=(HelloWorld)ic.lookup("ent1.HelloWorld");
}catch(NamingException ne){
}or
javax.jms.ConnectionFactory connectionFactory;
try{
ic=new InitialContext(env);
connectionFactory=(javax.jms.ConnectionFactory)ic.lookup("jms/ConnectionFactory");
}catch(NamingException ne){
}I get an exception

Ways to make an application run at OS startup from Java
Let's say I want to have a JCheckBox in a Java application labeled "Start this application automatically when Windows starts up" like many messenger and voip applications.
How would you do that from within the java application? Copying a shortcut to the Windows startup folder? Editing the registry? I would need this to work mainly on Windows but is there any cross-platform way of doing this?

Unix is usually set up so that the shell executes the script .profile (or .bash_profile etc. depending on the login shell) under the HOME directory upon the user's logging in.A thing to note on this is that in pretty much anything other than Windows-land, the OS, and the graphical windows manager are separate beasts. It's perfectly feasible for me to log on to my Unix account, run all the .bashrc scripts etc, but not have any sort of graphical environment available. You probably don't want something graphical to start up under those circumstances. It's worth looking at how to hook into X being started, rather than merely a login session.
