J2EE install affects virus scanner

I have McAffee's VirusScan Enterprise 7.1.0 running on my Windows XP laptop, after I install J2EE 1.4 SDK the virus scanner starts misbehaving. It dramatically slows down the system when I run Java apps or access jar or zip files. Before installing J2EE the performance was good.
This problem has been replicated on a colleague's laptop and by one of our IM support guys on an identical system.
Does anyone know if the J2EE installer interferes with files used by VirusScan?

Yes, but I don't have the privileges to configure the virus scanner; zip and jars are scanned as part of our site-wide security policy.
Performance is fine before installing j2eesdk-1.4 , and it's fine if you install j2sdk-1.4 instead.
However , once the j2eesdk has been installed the scanner slows access to zip/jar files by more than 10x.
This has been confirmed by our IM department. Reconfiguring or reinstalling the scanner does not fix the problem. Removing j2eesdk does and reinstalling the scanner does not fix the problem either.
Our IM department has been unable to pinpoint the problem and is currently recommending rebuilding our PCs but I would prefer a less drastic solution.

  • Opt IN vs Opt OUT for McAffee Virus Scanner

Each time I update the Flash player Adobe attempts to get me to install a virus scanner.   I don't want it.   Sometimes I don't notice the box is already checked and the virus scanner install starts.
Why can't Adobe be user friendly and make it an opt IN rather than opt OUT.
It makes Adobe look like one of the bogus download sites that try to install crapware.

Amen.  Now it doesn't give you a choice it just automatically downloads.  In the past there was a check to toggle on and off.  Now it just assumes.  Atleast have it check for an anti-virus program that is already on the system.  This is wrong on many accounts, and am leaning more towards the HTML 5 player now because of this invasive bull crap!

  • Does firefox include a virus scanner

I installed firefox on my computer. Do I need to install a virus scanner separately or is this already in the firefox system ?

Firefox will use the default AV Scanner as shown in the Control Panel > Security Center as the first entry to scan files after a download has finished. You see a message about that in the (Tools) Download Manager.

  • I updated my computer today to 10.1.1 Yosemite.  In doing so, it said my kapersky's virus scanner is damaged and needs to be deleted.  I did so.  I'm wondering if you can recommend another virus scanner?

I updated my computer today to Yosemite 10.1.  It told me that my Kaspersky virus scanner was damaged and that I should delete it.  I did so.  I'm wondering what virus scanner I should purchase?

First, you should be sure you have fully uninstalled the software. If you have no uninstaller nor directions for uninstalling, then see:
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
        1. AppZapper
        2. AppDelete
        3. Automaton
        4. Hazel
        5. AppCleaner
        6. CleanApp
        7. iTrash
        8. Amnesia
        9. Uninstaller

    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Problems
If you are having an immediate problem with ads popping up see The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide, AdwareMedic, or Remove unwanted adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac - Apple Support.
Open Safari, select Preferences from the Safari menu. Click on Extensions icon in the toolbar. Disable all Extensions. If this stops your problem, then re-enable them one by one until the problem returns. Now remove that extension as it is causing the problem.
The following comes from user stevejobsfan0123. I have made minor changes to adapt to this presentation.
Fix Some Browser Pop-ups That Take Over Safari.
Common pop-ups include a message saying the government has seized your computer and you must pay to have it released (often called "Moneypak"), or a phony message saying that your computer has been infected, and you need to call a tech support number (sometimes claiming to be Apple) to get it resolved. First, understand that these pop-ups are not caused by a virus and your computer has not been affected. This "hijack" is limited to your web browser. Also understand that these messages are scams, so do not pay any money, call the listed number, or provide any personal information. This article will outline the solution to dismiss the pop-up.
    Quit Safari
Usually, these pop-ups will not go away by either clicking "OK" or "Cancel." Furthermore, several menus in the menu bar may become disabled and show in gray, including the option to quit Safari. You will likely have to force quit Safari. To do this, press Command + option + esc, select Safari, and press Force Quit.
    Relaunch Safari
If you relaunch Safari, the page will reopen. To prevent this from happening, hold down the 'Shift' key while opening Safari. This will prevent windows from the last time Safari was running from reopening.
This will not work in all cases. The shift key must be held at the right time, and in some cases, even if done correctly, the window reappears. In these circumstances, after force quitting Safari, turn off Wi-Fi or disconnect Ethernet, depending on how you connect to the Internet. Then relaunch Safari normally. It will try to reload the malicious webpage, but without a connection, it won't be able to. Navigate away from that page by entering a different URL, i.e. www.apple.com, and trying to load it. Now you can reconnect to the Internet, and the page you entered will appear rather than the malicious one.An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.

From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:
    The facts are:
    1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
    2. There is no anti-malware that can detect everything targeting the Mac.
    3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that
the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering
techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.
    4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
        protection against malware.
    5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
from which they purport to protect you.
    6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.
    7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.
    8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something
you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.
    9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware.

  • Virus scanner question

To those readers who are established Apple users, do you choose to have a virus scanner and a software firewall on your computer?
I know the virus threat to OS X are not comparable with the threat to Windows PCs but I'd be curious to know your thoughts on the subject.

What about users running Windows on their new Macs through a virtualization program such as Parallels?
If you are using Boot Camp or Parallels then you are at risk just like any other PC. So, in this case I would STRONGLY recommend anti-virus software just like with any other PC. Additionally, an anti-malware product wouldn't go astray either.
With VPC, you can supposedly protect the PC through the Mac firewall by disabling the "virtual switch networking" feature.
The firewall does not protect you from viruses but from external intrusions. While they both are risks to your computer they are distinctly different things.
Does anybody know how Parallels works, security-wise?
Parallels is just like any other PC when it comes to the security of the OS you install under it. Although, it does insulate your Mac OS X installation from any damage providing you do not share files and folders with your Mac OS X data.

  • Virus Scanner APP for iPhone4 necessary?

    Dear all,
it's the first time for me unsing a iPhone. Right now I have the new iPhone4 and my question is about the ability to go online with this smartphone.
Do I need a virus scanner software app or something like this for the iPhone?
If so maybe apple has (or you have) a suggestion for me which app will be thw best one.
Any answers about this are welcome.

Do I need a virus scanner software app or something like this for the iPhone?
No. As long as your phone is not jailbroken, you can't install anything on an iPhone except through the iTunes sync process. Nothing can be downloaded through Safari & installed on your phone.

  • Is there any benefit to installing anti-virus software on the Windows side of the Boot Camp configuration?

Is there any benefit to installing anti-virus software on the Windows side of the Boot Camp configuration?

The advantage is the susceptibility of Windows systems to viruses and passing those along.  While they may not affect, or infect, a Mac OS X systems, thy can be passed through to others.

You probably edited something at some point while SA was open.

Update clamav to the latest version and use clamd instead of clamscan. This should solve your CPU problem. (or if you have done so already, check to see if clamd is running "ps -U clamav" and check the log to see if amavisd is picking it up as its primary)

  • Hi. I run parallels, should I install anti virus software?

    Hi
I run parallels on my mac, should I install inti virus software on the Windows 7 I am using?

This does not make it any more or less neccessary to run anti-virus software on the Mac itself. You must install some kind of Windows anti-virus software in the virtual machine, however, if you are going to be using the Windows system in that virtual machine to go online or deal with files obtained from questionable sources. If that Windows system can be used in isolation, then you should be okay to skip the anti-virus software.
