Jakarta tomcat connectors

I just downloaded tomcat 5.0.19 to run JSP pages and I also downloaded tomcat connectors 2.0.4 win32 and velocity 1.4. I also downloaded asc and md5 files. I have W2K Pro. I need answers to a few questions!
What are asc and md5 files and keys, they contain code like this(5cb27eb9cdff811296b0bdf52e73b858)?
What are tomcat connectors?
Should I enter the JAVA_HOME directory like this (C:\j2sdk1.4.2_02)?
Can tomcat run alongside IIS?
Do I need anything else to run JSP?

The ASC, MD5 and keys are all related to making sure you downloaded a clean copy of the file from a mirror.
asc file is a PGP signature
md5 file is a checksum.
Using a product like openPGP you can then confirm that what you downloaded from the mirror hasn't been tampered with.
Connectors are for linking Tomcat with standard web servers (like IIS or apache)
They are not absolutely necessary.

JAVA_HOME directory looks fine.
As long as you have Java and Tomcat, you are fine for running JSP.
If you are connecting to a database, you will need a JDBC database driver to connect to it.

i'd like to use Apache 2.0 for dispatching requests to OC4J. i've been doing some experimenting and i was able to setup Apache and Jakarta Tomcat Connectors (JK) v1.2 to route requests to OC4J. this seems to be working fine in my development environment but how well supported or reliable is this setup?
the requests are now being dispatched to JDeveloper 10.1.3 embedded OC4J instance. the only way i managed to do this was by modifying the embedded-oc4j/config/default-web-site.xml file and changing the web-site element protocol attribute value to "ajp13". this setup has the drawback that now direct http connections don't work anymore. is there a way to have both ajp13 and http connectors working simultaneously in the embedded OC4J?

Sure there is. Add another web site configuration file, say, myHttp-web-site.xml, which is a copy > of the original default-web-site.xml with http protocol and a different port.

Can anyone offer advice on getting some documentation to enable Apache2-
Jakarta-Tomcat connector?
I don't install eDir, iManager, etc, so only work apache2, tomcat5 from
SLES9.
In Read Hat 8 I just add this sentences in httpd.conf and it works.
JkWorkersFile /usr/local/apache/conf/workers.properties
JkLogFile /usr/local/apache/logs/mod_jk.log
JkLogLevel info
JkMount /epagos/* tomcat
No such luck on NLSBS9 follow instruction in
/usr/share/doc/packages/apache2-jakarta-tomcat-connectors/README.SuSE
I think SuSEconfig --module apache2 it's not working, because i customize
test file /etc/tomcat/demoserver/jk.conf and can't browse the pages

Change port from 8443 to 443 on jakarta-tomcat 6

Hi all,
How can I possibly change the SSL port from 8443 to 443? The default was 8443 and it works fine with that.I've tried to set it to port 443 at the connector tag and all redirectPort in server.xml. However, when I tried to access https://localhost/ it shows Page could not be displayed. I am currently running java jdk 1.6 on jakarta-tomcat 6. Is there any additional settings which I've left out? Thanks in advance..

I agree with DrClap, that beginning with Tomcat is tough. :) But still, the answer to your problem is right there before you. (But then again, it always is, and I never see the wood either.) :)
LifecycleException: null.open: java.net.BindException: Address already in use: JVM_Bind
I am not sure about the null.open part, which is a little bit irritating. But the address you are trying to bind your socket to, is already used by another Service. This might be the case if you have already a tomcat running, or if you have some other service installed that uses one of the ports you are attempting to use.

Does the JDBC-ODBC bridge driver accomodate any of these settings you're trying?
The problem shouldn't have anything to do with Tomcat. Sounds like a JDBC driver issue to me. Try to reproduce the error without Tomcat, and then see if adding the SQL corrects things at all.
I'd read the docs to see if the bridge driver has these features. I don't think it's up to the full standard.

No, you don't need to run Apache webserver (httpd) to run Tomcat. Tomcat by default runs on port 8080, but you can set it to any port, including 80, if you have permission to do so (on *nix systems, you need root permissions to run services on any port below 1024).
Tomcat is a webserver as well, just one that includes a servlet container and JSP processor. So it will serve your html files, images, etc (aka static content), just as well as Apache httpd, in addition to being able to run servlets and JSPs.
Apache httpd has more options for serving static content than Tomcat, so many people prefer to use it as their main webserver and only use Tomcat as a sort of "plugin" to handle servlets and JSPs. This can be achieved through a connector. Instructions on how to set this up are on the Jakarta website.
So you could use Apache and Tomcat combined, next to each other, or totally separated. In many cases, just Tomcat will do.

I'm not sure why you have mentioned Tomcat, but you need to run the class with something like:
java -classpath .;D:\j2sdk1.4.2_08\jre\lib\ext\mysql-connector-java-3.1.10-bin.jar com.example.JdbcExample1If you've correctly set the CLASSPATH environment variable then you can leave out the -classpath command line argument. Notice that you must specify the package of the class too.
To compile this all correctly, you should do something like:
mkdir classes
javac -d classes JdbcExample1.javaand then run with
java -classpath classes;D:\j2sdk1.4.2_08\jre\lib\ext\mysql-connector-java-3.1.10-bin.jar com.example.JdbcExample1

Can't Build 64-bit Tomcat Connector Module (mod_jk)

I've been using the Tomcat Connector Module on my server so all requests can be logged by Apache, I only need to open port 80 on the firewall, and sites that use jsp with other technologies look more cohesive to the user.
In the past when a new version of the module was released I'd just download the source, unzip it, build it and instal it. Following the included instructions, "for the impatient Apache admins," I used:
./configure --with-apxs=/usr/sbin/apxs
to configure the build, then "make" and "sudo make install" to build and install the module.
This has always worked well (except it always installed the module in the wrong directory, which I never corrected because I liked to test the new module before I got rid of the old one), and when I moved to an Intel Mac, it continued to work. All the Apple-provided modules were universal binaries, but the i386 modules I built worked fine.
Now, with Leopard, we have a new, 64-bit Apache 2. I had been looking forward to working with Apache 2, and 64-bit is nice too, right? But now that it's here I'm not so sure.
My first disillusionment was that, when I downloaded the mod_jk source and built it using the same procedure I had been using, Apache refused to load the module, saying it had the wrong architecture. I checked the provided modules to see what architecture it wanted, and they were all universal binaries with four architectures, which didn't really narrow it down too much, but since I could rule out the ppc and ppc64 architectures, and the "wrong" one I built was i386, that left x86_64 as the only possibility.
Since I barely know what I'm doing, I'm not about to try anything crazy like building a universal binary (although I did try to follow this tutorial, but it didn't work for this project and his instructions didn't provide enough detail for me to even begin to figure out why), but I can't even figure out how to build a 64-bit binary.
I do have Xcode 3.0, so I should have the ability to build 64-bit binaries, and I have the new Java 1.6.0, which is also supposed to be 64-bit, so I should be race-ready, but when I run the configure script, specifying which Java version to use and which architecture to build:

I still end up with an i386 binary when the smoke clears, and in the log is a warning:

I have a feeling I can't just substitute x86_64 for i386 (i.e. x86_64-apple-darwin9.2.2). The "x86_64-apple-darwin" part might be right, but I don't know about the 9.2.2. I've poked around the filesystem and gotten thoroughly confused. There seem to be all kinds of headers and compilers for i386 and x86_64 and something called i686, which seems to be related to x86_64 somehow, but I have no idea how to point the makefile to the right ones. I don't even know how or why it seems to be perfectly capable of finding everything it needs to build for i386 without my help, and even when I try to mislead it by suggesting I might want it to build for x86_64, it still unerringly finds all the i386 stuff and builds the module with them.
Since no one seems to provide Mac OS binaries of anything, it would be really nice to understand how to do this. I might even want to go crazy and build a 64-bit PostgreSQL or something like that, but if I can't even build a simple Apache module anymore, my hopes are fading.
If anybody is somehow clued-in on how all this stuff works, I'd really appreciate a brain-dump.

At first I was worried because, when I ran configure it said:

But I went ahead and ran make anyway, and here's what I ended up with:
apache-2.0/mod_jk.so: Mach-O 64-bit bundle x86_64
which I could install and test. It even works!
Where did you find this information? I did a lot of digging too, but I must have been digging in the wrong places. I always like to go back to the source and see what else I can learn. Maybe then I can take another run at building a universal binary.

Eclipse as a development environment with Jakarta Tomcat

Eclipse as a development environment with Jakarta Tomcat - Need help!!

Subject: Eclipse as a development environment with Jakarta Tomcat
I am setting up the new development environment for my application (project). Below are the components involved::
�     Eclipse 3.1
�     myEclipse - EnterpriseWorkbenchInstaller_4.0GA_E3.1
�     jakarta-tomcat-5.0.28 (Application Server)
�     Sysdeo Eclipse Tomcat Launcher plugin - tomcatPluginV31beta
�     SDK 1.4.2_08
�     Microsoft XP sp2 operating system
I have no issue with creation of project structure in eclipse IDE, compilation, and deployment, but there are some exception upon running the application.
My project folder structure as follows:
MyApplication/

Conf/
Web/
classes

lib
web.xml
�     my application has few dependent projects, therefore I copied all the dependent projects final compiled classes (jars) to �lib� folder.
�     I set all necessary classpath according to tomcat documentation.
�     I created MyApplication.xml file under D:\jakarta-tomcat-5.0.28\conf\Catalina\localhost\ folder with the below context
<Context path="/MyApplication " docBase="D:/xx/xxx/dev/src/ MyApplication/web" debug="0" reloadable="true" />
�     I don�t get any exception during compilation and deployment process.
�     I would greatly appreciate if you could give me a tips!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tomcat vs Apache with Tomcat connectors (mod/jk)

Is there any advantage (security, performance etc.) of running a Java web application on Apache HTTP Server with Tomcat Connectors (mod/jk) rather than directly running it on Tomcat.

Error when starting Jakarta-Tomcat 4.0.4

Iam getting an error while iam starting my Jakarta-tomcat App server.the error shows as below.
C:\jakarta-tomcat-4.0.4\bin>startup
The JAVA_HOME environment variable is not defined correctly
This environment variable is needed to run this program
The system cannot find the batch label specified - end
Using CATALINA_BASE: C:\jakarta-tomcat-4.0.4
Using CATALINA_HOME: C:\jakarta-tomcat-4.0.4
Using CATALINA_TMPDIR: C:\jakarta-tomcat-4.0.4\temp
Using JAVA_HOME: C:\j2sdk1.4.2\bin
The system cannot find the file -Djava.endorsed.dirs=.
if any one has come across the same error,please let me know how u solved this problem

1 - He has already installed tomcat
2 - He now has it working (reply #3)
3 - Just because it works for you doesn't mean it will
work for him. You have made assumptions about where
he has installed java and tomcat.
4 - If you glance up at the first post, you will see
his java and tomcat paths included in there - they
look nothing like the stuff you gave him. Following
your instructions to the letter will only cause it to
break.
Please try and take a bit more care.

evnafetssince it was simple mistake in a hurry i replyed
just saw the subject not whole message nor even any replys
the big mistake i had done is i assumed it to my system
this happens when u r not concentrated
